Holidays in Sochi - how to get there, what to see, where to stay

Article and Section Navigation

General information, recreation, beaches

Sochi (Sochi) is a resort town in the Krasnodar Territory on the Black Sea coast (Sochi on the map). This is the most popular and well-known beach, ski, medical and mountain resort of the country far beyond the borders of Russia, which has received a great impetus to development in recent years, including thanks to the holding of world sports events here. So, in 2014, the Winter Olympic Games were held in Sochi; from the same year, one of the annual stages of the royal F-1 races began to be held at the new automobile racing track; in 2018, the city hosted the FIFA Football Championship games. And these are not all the important sporting events that take place in Sochi every year.

Strictly speaking, officially, since 2020, all sporting events in the Olympic Park, including the F1 car races, are no longer held on the territory of the city of Sochi, but in the independently federal village of Sirius. The fact is that the Imereti resort, where the Olympic Park and the race track are located, was excluded from the resort city of Sochi, and became an independent settlement and resort Sirius.

Holidays in Sochi

Despite the number and importance of sporting events, for most tourists and vacationers Sochi, of course, is primarily interesting not as a sports city, but as a beach resort city. This is the most popular and visited summer beach resort in Russia, and in recent years it has been gaining popularity also for off-season holidays. The variety of resorts and beaches allows young people demanding entertainment, families with children of any age, and the elderly to relax here with pleasure.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the mountain resorts of Krasnaya Polyana, which are also part of Sochi. In summer, people go to Krasnaya Polyana for outdoor recreation and walks in the Caucasus Mountains, and in winter the most modern and longest ski slopes in Russia start working.

There is also a medical balneological resort Matsesta, founded in pre-Soviet times and gained fame and recognition all over the world thanks to unique methods of treatment with local hydrogen sulfide waters.

To make it clearer to you what the resort city of Greater Sochi is, it is worth taking a short excursion into its geography. Sochi is a huge settlement that stretches along the Black Sea coast for more than 120 kilometers, and according to some estimates, for all 145. In addition to the coastal strip, it also occupies a considerable part of the territory of the Caucasus Mountains, including the village of Krasnaya Polyana and many other mountain villages, towns and settlements. And all this is one city of Sochi with a single transport system and administration. That is why when they talk about rest in Sochi, they mean rest, including at such resorts as Adler, Khosta, Matsesta, Lazarevskoye, Loo, etc. The entire city district of Sochi with all these settlements is commonly called Greater Sochi.

You can learn more about all the variety of resorts in Greater Sochi and choose the right one using this overview of all the popular resorts in Sochi, but briefly about each of them:

  • 🌴 The center of Sochi is, in fact, the most central part of Greater Sochi and the administrative center. There are good beaches, well-developed tourist and urban infrastructure..
  • 🌴 Adler is the southernmost district and the most popular and developed resort of the resort city of Sochi, located 30 kilometers from the city center. There are 8 kilometers of pebble and sandy-pebble beaches, many hotels and sanatoriums, the main airport of Sochi and a modern railway station.
  • 🌴 Imereti resort or Sirius is a young Black Sea resort in Russia, formed from the Sochi and Adler areas in the Imereti lowland. A great place for a beach holiday with a long pebble beach and a well-developed new infrastructure. Officially, since 2021, it has not been part of the city of Sochi.
  • 🌴 Kudepsta is a relatively quiet and peaceful beach neighborhood on the outskirts of Adler with not the best, but sparsely populated beaches.
  • 🌴 Khosta is a small traditional beach resort near Adler, famous for its beautiful nature, clean air, and milder climate. There are not many attractions and attractions here.
  • 🌴 Lazarevskoye is one of the most developed resorts in Sochi, distinguished by clean clear water, good ecology, excellent conditions for recreation of any category of tourists.
  • 🌴 Loo is one of the most developed resorts in the Lazarevsky district (in addition to Lazarevsky itself), characterized by low prices for accommodation.
  • 🌴 Uch-Dere is a beach resort and microdistrict that shares Aqualoo beach, also known as "White" or "Mountain Air", with the village of Loo. The beach directly at Uch-Dere is small and almost wild, suitable for camping.
  • 🌴 Dagomys is a small area and beach resort just 13 kilometers from the center of Sochi. The village is well developed, the beach is pebbly.
  • ⛰ Krasnaya Polyana is a ski resort in winter and a mountain resort in summer. In summer, you can visit in the form of a one-day excursion to climb the mountains on cable cars, or stay here for a few days for hiking in the mountains or just for a change of scenery.

Hotels and accommodation where to stay

If we talk specifically about the Central district of the city of Sochi, then the whole range of accommodation categories is presented here, from ultra-budget rented garages and boathouses, converted to receive vacationers, to five-star all-inclusive hotels. At the same time, it should be said objectively that accommodation in high-class hotels and sanatoriums is comparable, and sometimes more expensive, than similar options in popular foreign, including European resorts. But if you need to save money, then in Sochi you can find good accommodation options in private housing or mini-hotels for an excellent price even at the height of the season. But it is important even within the most Central district to take into account the specific location of the hotel, because you can completely spoil your vacation with unjustified expectations. About where it is better (in which area) to stay in Sochi, read more here. If you are interested not only in the center itself, but also in other areas in Sochi, we advise you to study this overview of Sochi resorts.

We always try to select and book accommodation in Sochi in advance, because this way there are more chances to get a good accommodation or a hotel room at the best price. And we prefer to do it on these proven and reliable sites:

Weather in Sochi and tourist seasons, when is the best time to go

The center of Sochi and all its resorts are considered to be traditional beach resorts, i.e. rest on them is mainly summer and its peak season falls on July and August. The exception is the ski resorts of Krasnaya Polyana, where the high season, on the contrary, takes place in winter from January to February.

However, in recent years, due to the development of the infrastructure of resorts and increasing their accessibility, it is possible to come to Sochi simply for a change of scenery and sightseeing at any time of the year, including during the so-called off-season or in other words low season. Especially interesting for off-season recreation are the large resorts of Central Sochi, Adler, Imeretinka (Sirius village), Lazarevskoye. You can also go to other resorts in the off-season, but the problem is that at this time the situation there is completely "sour", everything is closed and sometimes there is even nowhere to eat outside the hotels. A nice bonus of traveling to Sochi in the off-season is that ticket prices are falling very much, there are offers of tours at prices significantly lower than the cost of the flight.

Sometimes you can hear from tourists the question: "Does it snow in Sochi?". Yes, it happens, but very rarely. It falls in the coldest months of January or February, but very rarely, and most often melts immediately. Permanent snow cover is established in winter only in the mountainous regions of Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana.

And now a little bit more about each of the seasons:

  • 🌞 Beach season. The beach season in Sochi runs from May to October. The most comfortable and popular months are July and August, and it is at this time that the maximum number of vacationers arrives here. But prices are rising in these months, the beaches are crowded.

If you want to avoid high prices and crowded beaches, you can come here in May and June. But it is worth saying that at this time it may still be a little cool for a comfortable swim in the sea, although it is possible.

September and October are the velvet season and also a great time for a beach holiday. Prices at this time are reduced along with the number of vacationers. The water in the sea is still warm, but the weather can bring unpleasant surprises in the form of cold weather and rains, it's already how lucky. In general, you can swim and sunbathe in Sochi until December, although not everyone dares to go into the cool water at this time.

  • 🎿 Ski season. The ski season in the mountain resorts of Sochi begins in mid-December and ends in March-April. At this time, lovers of skiing go to the resorts of Krasnaya Polyana, but sometimes settle in Sirius, Adler or the center. However, then you will have to spend 1-2 hours in each direction every day on a trip to the tracks.

  • 📷 Excursion season or off-season. At any time of the year, you can come to Sochi to go sightseeing, hiking along the mountain and ecological trails of the Sochi National Park, or just to change the situation. Especially good periods for this are autumn and spring, when you can get very good prices for accommodation and flights, and last–minute tours are sold at a huge discount below cost. At the same time, all the sights and natural beauty are available in full. Or rather, almost in full, since some attractions and amusement parks may be closed for a short time for prevention and repair.

Well, if you want to admire the waterfalls and mountain rivers, then most likely you will not see them in the fall, because the rivers are drying up. The best time to visit the waterfalls is spring. You can also see waterfalls in summer and early spring, but this is how lucky you are with the rains.

Theoretically, it is possible to get to Sochi by bus, but in our opinion this is far from the best idea. First of all, it's a difficult road after Dzhubgi, which runs along the coast along serpentines and through resorts with eternal traffic jams. As a result, the bus can travel these 170 kilometers for 6 hours or more. Not everyone can withstand such a road, especially the elderly and children during the heat. Therefore, we recommend using buses only for trips from the nearest cities, if there is no other way to get there. To make the road easier to transfer, we advise you to buy tickets for branded buses with air conditioning. The bus schedule for the Krasnodar Territory can be viewed here - kpas.ru; schedule for the Sochi bus station on the website of the Municipal Unitary Enterprise Sochiavtotrans - mupsat.ru; check long-distance schedule and buy tickets to Sochi on Tutu.ru; list of intercity flights to Sochi on Unitiki. Sochi Bus station, where buses arrive and depart, is located in the very center next to the railway station at 56a Gorky Street (Sochi bus station on the map).

Many travelers choose a private car as a way to get to Sochi . This method looks attractive at first glance, but in fact it is associated with many problems, so we recommend that you refrain from it. The fact is that there will be no big savings from such a trip, and sometimes it costs even more than an airplane or train. In addition, you will get a lot of difficulties with parking, traffic jams and possible fines.

If you still decide to go by car, then from Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of the western (European) part of the Russian Federation it is most comfortable to go along the toll federal highway M4-Don. The fare for it will be from 2400 rubles and above with cash payment at checkpoints. For all information about toll booths and payment procedures, see on the Rosavtodor website. Big problems can await you at the entrance to Sochi after Dzhubga. At the height of the tourist season, it may take 6 hours or more to travel these 170 kilometers. If possible, plan your trip at night or early in the morning.

For detailed instructions on each of the methods, how and how to get to Sochi, see here.

Transport, what to use to get around

If we talk directly about the central district of Sochi, then you can use taxis, city buses, rented bicycles or scooters, a personal or rented car to move around it. But in most cases, for walks in the tourist part of the city and trips to the beach, transport is not needed at all, everything can be bypassed on foot. For trips between different districts and resorts of Greater Sochi, from the airport to Krasnaya Polyana, you can additionally use trains and trains, and this is the fastest and most reliable way to travel.

Taxis in Sochi work mainly by meters, but the good old "bombs" are still common at a contract price. In most cases, ordering a taxi by the meter through the applications of the aggregators Yandex.Go, Uber, etc. is cheaper, the price of the trip starts from 69 rubles, but increases significantly in bad weather, on weekends and when traffic jams occur on the roads. You can order a car from an aggregator and large taxi companies by phone:

  • Red Taxi +7 (862) 290-00-00
  • Maxim +7 (862) 222-22-22
  • Yandex +7 (862) 444-44-42
  • Lucky +7 (862) 244-44-44
  • Tap Taxi +7 (862) 448-48-48

If you come to Sochi on vacation in your own car, then you will probably have a desire to go around and see everything on your own. It's really very convenient, but not always cheaper. Personally, we (the authors of the site) prefer to use a private car in Sochi only for trips to hard-to-reach places by public transport, for example, to mountainous areas or villages, or for moving between districts.

A great alternative to your own car would be to rent a car. You can rent a car daily, but if you do not plan to travel a lot, it is more profitable to use per-minute rental or carsharing. What's good, there are special dedicated free parking spaces for car sharing, besides, this method of moving can be successfully used to get to the right place in one direction and complete the trip there. In Sochi, as of 2021, BelkaCar carsharing is operating with tariffs starting from 5 rubles/minute. Daily rent will cost from 1300 rubles/day.

For short trips within the center or to the nearest attractions, it is convenient to use city buses. Travel within the district costs from 28 rubles. There are large buses and small minibuses on the routes. Payment is made at the entrance in cash or by credit card.

Another modern and affordable way to get around is a minute–by-minute rental of bicycles or scooters. Now at least the following companies are working in Sochi: Urent, Whoosh, Seagull, BusyFly, E-Motion. There is no special difference in terms of convenience, stability of work and tariffs between them, so you can choose any of the ones you like or the first one you like, even by the color of the scooters. In our opinion, the most common scooters are Urent scooters, and only they have rental bikes. The rental price starts from 5 rubles / minute, plus the activation fee is charged, so this method is not much cheaper at the price than carsharing or taxi. But the fact is that on bicycles or scooters you can get to places where there is no way to drive by car.

And finally, do not forget about the good old excursions, with the help of which you can get acquainted with the sights on the organizer's transport, most often these are comfortable buses.

Attractions and entertainment

Big Sochi is a huge city where you can count more than a dozen attractions and tourist attractions. But if we talk directly about the Central district of Sochi, in which tourists like to stay on vacation, then there are not a lot of really worthwhile attractions and tourist attractions here. So, in the center you can visit several unpretentious museums, walk along the arboretum and historical boulevard, see several conventional architectural and historical places, and that's it.

Entertainment here is also not as good as it is usually assumed: there is only a Riviera amusement park and a dolphinarium. Even the Mayak Water park, which has been working for many years, is now (in 2021) closed, and it looks like forever. But the top attractions and entertainment of Sochi, such as, for example, the Olympic Park and Singing Fountains, Vorontsov Caves, Sochi Amusement Park, water parks, oceanarium, etc., are located quite far from the center in other areas.

Fortunately, during your vacation, your choice will not be limited only to entertainment and attractions directly in the area of the center. Independently or with excursions during one day you will be able to visit interesting places in other resorts of Greater Sochi. The easiest way to do this is with the help of excursions that are purchased from distributors on the streets, from hotel guides or online on these verified sites with reviews:

And here's what we recommend to visit during your vacation in Sochi in the first place:

And here you can read in more detail about the sights directly in the center of Sochi and how to visit them.
