General information

Samara - a city in the central part of Russia, the administrative center of the Samara region. Located on the banks of the Volga River, at a distance of 1050 kilometers from Moscow (Samara on the map of Russia). This is a "city of one million", with a population of 1.16 million people, the ninth largest in the Russian Federation. Another large and well-known city in the region is Togliatti. The area of the Samara region is 53 thousand square kilometers, which, for example, is almost twice the area of Belgium, and slightly less than the size of Lithuania or Latvia.

The capital of the region got its name from the small river Samara, a tributary of the Volga. At its mouth the city is located. The official date of foundation of the city is considered to be 1586, when Voivode Grigory Zasyekin erected a fortress on this site, but the first mention of the settlement-pier here is found on the maps of Venetian cartographers a little earlier, in 1367.

Until 1935, Samara developed and existed under its original name, until the Red Army renamed the city Kuibyshev, in honor of the revolutionary figure V. V. Kuibyshev, who actively participated in the revolutionary coup directly in the city in 1917. During the Great Patriotic War, Samara became a special purpose city, and it was even planned to move the government from Moscow, but this, fortunately, did not happen. In 1991, the city returned to its former name.

Samara and the region is an economically developed region. In 2018, Samara hosted one of the stages of the 21st FIFA World Cup, as a result of which, in preparation for the Championship, the transport and tourist infrastructure improved here.

Holidays in Samara and the region

The tourist potential of Samara and the region is, but the tourist infrastructure in the form of domestic tours to the sights of the region is practically absent. In Samara and the region you can see a lot of interesting museums and attractions, go hiking in the Zhiguli mountains, Samara Luka National Park or Zhiguli nature reserve, engage in active recreation, for example, fishing in the Volga or one of the many lakes of the region. But, unfortunately, all this is very difficult for guests of Samara to get, since there is no tourist organization to visit them, and aggravates all the extremely inconvenient working hours of interesting places for tourists.

Going here, be prepared to independently organize routes, and preferably on your own transport. Only single versions of tours to the most popular places of the Samara Luka National Park are available, but they can be done with the same success, and also cheaper, by public transport. The rest of the interesting places remain the lot only of those who come here by private transport and are ready to travel around the region hundreds of kilometers from one attraction to another.

As for the city of Samara itself, then, by and large, there is nothing for tourists to do except visit museums, walk along the pedestrian street and the embankment. The historical part of the city is almost completely rebuilt, little remains of the spirit of the Old Town. There is a pedestrian zone along Leningradskaya street, but it is more focused on local residents than on tourists, since there is nothing remarkable on it.

In addition to Samara, another major city in the region is the capital of the automotive industry of Russia – the city of Togliatti. This is a special city – the largest settlement in Russia, which is not the capital of the region. It is very modern, with wide roads and green parks. But from a tourist point of view, there is nothing to do here, except to stop along the way, since it is located on the M5 highway connecting Chelyabinsk with Moscow. But there are several good museums that are worth visiting the city for one or two days: the Technical Museum, the Avtovaz Museum, and the Museum of local lore. Tourist infrastructure in Samara and the region

As we have already mentioned, the tourist infrastructure in the region and the city of Samara is poorly developed. However, there will be no problems with accommodation and food, as there are plenty of hotels, cafes and restaurants. In preparation for the World Cup, new hotels were opened, road junctions were built, important architectural objects were reconstructed, but all this has almost nothing to do with the ordinary tourist. There are no interesting excursions, entertainment for tourists, tourist transport. Read more about hotels and districts in Samara here.

Attractions and entertainment in Samara

The main part of the sights and tourist places of Samara are museums and galleries. There are very few isolated and interesting historical sights, ancient temples or mosques here. Tourists can spend time hiking in museums, walking along the pedestrian tourist zone on Leningradskaya Street and along the embankment along the Volga. It is worth highlighting the unique museum-Stalin's bunker, which is specially visited even from other regions. True, it should be noted that the sights of Samara are not yet very oriented for visiting guests of the city. The fact is that they work on a schedule that is not very convenient for tourists: they do not work on weekends at the end of the week, during long holidays, they are often closed for sanitary days, etc. And in some attractions to visit you need to sign up in advance.

Also from Samara it is convenient to visit the sights of the Samara region. The main attraction of the region is the Samara Luka National Park. This is a huge territory, on which there are several natural and cultural attractions that will definitely be of interest to tourists. Also in the region is the Zhiguli reserve, where you can walk the tourist routes "Mount Strelnaya" and "stone bowl". If possible, it is worth visiting the unique blue lake and go to the "medieval" Garibaldi. Learn more about the sights of Samara here.
