General information
Nizhny Novgorod (Nizhny-Novgorod) - a city in central Russia on the banks of the Volga and Oka rivers, 400 kilometers from Moscow (Nizhny Novgorod on the map of Russia), one of the most popular places for sightseeing and educational tourism in the European part of the Russian Federation. Nizhny Novgorod is the administrative center of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the Volga Federal District, which includes as many as 14 subjects. It is quite large in area (466 square kilometers) and the sixth largest population in Russia (more than 1 million 200 thousand people). From 1932 to 1990 it was named "Gorky" in honor of the Great Russian and Soviet writer, poet, novelist and playwright Maxim Gorky.
Nizhny Novgorod played a crucial role in the formation and development of the Russian state. Its history began in 1221 with the construction of wooden and earthen defensive fortifications by Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich, which over time were rebuilt and became the current Stone Kremlin. When the Kremlin successfully fulfilled its military and defensive function, the city began to develop as an economic and Cultural Center. Due to its good location on trade routes, since the XIX century, the largest Russian Makaryevskaya Fair has been moved here, which is why Nizhny Novgorod received its nickname "pocket of Russia". From that moment on, the city began to develop rapidly, and already in 1847 a water supply system was built here, the first fountain was opened. In addition to trade, industry and shipbuilding began to develop.
Holidays in Nizhny Novgorod
Nizhny Novgorod is interesting, first of all, as an excursion and educational direction of Tourism. The historical center (tourist area) has preserved historical buildings and many architectural monuments, many of which date back to the XV century. The central attraction is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, around which the city was historically formed. It is around the Kremlin today that the historical part of the city and the tourist area are located. In addition to architectural and historical monuments, there are a huge number of museums and theaters, temples and monasteries.
For those who come here not only to see monuments and museums, a lot of entertainment is offered: there are nightclubs, bars, a good promenade, and in summer you can even relax on the beaches. There is even a nudist beach. There are many divergences for children: several zoos, children's entertainment museums, a children's railway and even a cable car across the Volga.
Two historical streets originate from the Kremlin: pedestrian Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and historical Rozhdestvenskaya Street. Both are interesting in their architecture and atmosphere, but most of the time tourists spend on the Pedestrian Street Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, which is an ideal place for evening walks. There is always something going on: performances of street artists, holiday shows and promotions, and even rallies.
When you get enough of the architectural beauty of Nizhny, you can go to one of more than thirty museums. It is absolutely obligatory to visit at least one of the three museums dedicated to Maxim Gorky; we recommend visiting the Rukavishnikov Estate Museum, The Art Museum, the Technical Museum, the Museum of Russian photography, etc. With children, be sure to go to one of the two technical museums: "Quarks" or "Einsteinium" (closed). There is also a dolphinarium, a water park, zoos. Well, be sure to take children on the cable car through the Volga.
But interesting places are not limited to the city itself. Many attractions are scattered throughout the Nizhny Novgorod region, and they can and should be visited during a trip to Nizhny Novgorod. For a trip to them we have prepared separate guidebooks:
- Bor city "the satellite city of Nizhny Novgorod is on the other side of the Volga. You can get there by cable car to walk through the old streets and visit the local museum.
- Arzamas city - a city of churches and monasteries, worthy even of a separate day trip.
- Gorodets town - the oldest city in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the birthplace of many crafts and Gorodetsky gingerbread.
- Village Diveevo - a tourist and pilgrimage place thanks to the monastery located here and the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov.
- Balakhna town - there are several museums and ancient temples. It is better to visit Balakhna during a trip to Gorodets or passing through.
- Semenov town - the birthplace of a unique artistic style- "golden khokhloma". Here you can visit the museum and the painting factory.
- Lake Svetloyar - amazing and mysterious natural attraction.
- Makaryevsky monastery and the village of Makaryevo - Trinity Makariev Zheltovodsky convent on the banks of the Volga looks like a fortress. There are also several small museums in the village.
Infrastructure in Nizhny Novgorod
Nizhny Novgorod has a developed infrastructure for a tourist stay. You can stay in one of more than five hundred hotels, offering a lot of accommodation for rent for a short time (see more about hotels and accommodation in Nizhny Novgorod). In the tourist area there are many cafes, restaurants, canteens. There are several international restaurants «Vkusno I tochka» (ex. McDonalds), KFC, Burger King. To have a quick and budget snack, you can use a relatively new service offered by Spar and magnet city chain stores: buy ready-made semi-finished products and drinks, warm them up in the store and use them here on specially equipped tables.
As before, today the city is one of the Centers of trade, so there will be no problems with shopping here. There are several giant shopping centers, on the Pedestrian Street Bolshaya Pokrovskaya there are many tourist shops with souvenirs, boutiques, branded stores. For souvenirs, we advise you to go to the large shop "Arts and crafts" on Pokrovka or to the Nizhny Novgorod fair, and for original handicrafts you can go on excursions to the factory in the city of Semenov. In general, learn more about tourist shopping in Nizhny Novgorod here.

🌞 need to go from June to August. The best time to travel to Nizhny Novgorod is the summer period, i.e. The months from June to August. It is the summer time that accounts for the high tourist season and most of the festive events, such as City Day (June 12), music and theater festivals, exhibitions.
-
⛅ you can go in May, September and October. Late spring and early autumn are also a good time to travel to Nizhny Novgorod. The weather at this time, although it will not please the heat and bright sun, but at least most of the attractions and museums, cafes and restaurants work. Inconvenience can cause rain, so take an umbrella on the trip.

🌨 do not go from November to April. In winter it is cold here, even a little colder than in Moscow. The cold north wind blows all the time, it often snows. And everything would be fine, because you can dress warmly, but the problem is that many attractions and entertainment reduce the Schedule of work or even close for reconstruction. What is even more inconvenient, a lot of snow falls, which utilities do not want or do not know how to cope with, and therefore most of the sidewalks become unsuitable for walking. Even the main tourist street Bolshaya Pokrovskaya is cleaned every other time. Early spring (March and April) is also not the best time: the snow begins to Melt, there is a lot of mud and whole swamps on the street, and sometimes even a real "street flood". And yet, in winter and spring, icicles on buildings are dangerous, so be careful when walking.
Nevertheless, within this period it is possible to successfully visit the city, if there are no other options. Especially convenient and interesting dates in winter: holidays on November 4, New Year holidays from January 1 to January 9, February 23, March 8.

Nizhny Novgorod is connected with the capital by high-speed trains "Strizh" (on the way 3 hours 50 minutes) and "Lastochka" (on the way 4 hours), as well as many ordinary trains (on the way 7 hours). Also from this station you can take suburban trains (trains) in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Near the station is the Metro Station "Moskovskaya", there are a large number of bus routes, trolleybuses, trams that go to different places in the city, including many routes to the tourist area. The fastest way to get to the tourist area is by Metro to the station "Gorkovskaya", and then to Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street and most hotels can be reached on foot or by taxi.
-
By bus
Nizhny Novgorod can be reached by intercity buses from neighboring regions, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Buses are slower than trains, cheaper, and less comfortable, but they can also be reached from cities where trains do not go. For reference, a bus ride from Moscow will cost 600-1000 rubles, depending on the carrier.
Buses arrive and depart from three bus stations:
- Bus Station "Shcherbinki" (234a Gagarin Ave., station on the map). This is the main bus station of the city. Located on the outskirts in the south, to get from here to the historical center is quite a long time. Almost all city transport from here goes to the center.
- Sennaya Bus Station (84 Bolshaya Pecherskaya STR., station on the map Several suburban buses depart from this station in the Nizhny Novgorod region, including in Kstovo to the atoll water park. The center can be reached on foot from here, or by bus №№ 4, 40, 45, 52, 90, T2, T24, T40, T45, T57, T60, T85, T90, t97, T98.

On a cruise ship
Nizhny Novgorod can be reached by cruise ships on the Volga River from Moscow, Samara, Kazan, Astrakhan and other cities. There are cruises in one direction, i.e. you can swim to the bottom and get off. The minimum duration of Cruises is 4 days, the cost is from 9000 rubles. There are several companies along the route, you can find and purchase cruises via the Internet on these proven sites:
There is no scheduled passenger service on motor ships.
Transport
Nizhny Novgorod has a developed public transport system, including buses and taxis, trolleybuses, trams, metro. There are also suburban trains and even a cable car for crossing to the other side of the river. Quickly and inexpensively you can get from almost anywhere in the city to another, without resorting to a personal car or taxi. True, it is worth noting that a trip by a group of 3-4 people by taxi for short distances in Nizhny Novgorod will cost less and much faster than by bus.
The network of urban routes is developed and confusing, but if you need to get from one place to another on a one-time basis, you can plan a trip using the following sites, where all routes are presented electronically on the map:
You can also use websites or map applications to plan routes on public transport Yandex, Google and 2GIS. In all of them, the routes are presented quite accurately, and even the location of individual buses, trams, etc. is shown. However, systems do not always automatically find the best route with or without transfers, sometimes simply point-blank refusing to offer direct flights on existing routes, and instead plan trips with transfers. Therefore, it is better to double-check their work, manually sorting out routes, or check with local residents or bus drivers.
When using the above-mentioned applications, we recommend downloading offline map data in advance, so as not to waste time and mobile traffic when searching for a route directly on the streets of Nizhny Novgorod.
The cost of public transport depends on the payment method (cash, card, travel card) and the specific type of transport and route. In general, the price order is:
- Metro, trolleybus, tram, bus-28 rubles one-time trip when paying by bank card or cash / 28 rubles when paying by city transport card "Citicard"
- Fixed-route taxis-from 30 rubles depending on the route
- Children under 7 years-free of charge
You can pay for travel in cash, a contactless bank card, a city transport card "Citicard" or a Moscow transport card" Troika" (the "Troika" is planned to be launched in 2021). In fixed-route taxis, payment in most cases is made in cash.
City transport card "Citicard" provides a small discount of 2 rubles per trip. So, trams, trolleybuses and separate routes of buses and trolleybuses cost the same when paying for "Citicard" and in other ways. So in our opinion, the expediency of its use by tourists who came to the city for a few days is a big question.

Useful tips about Nizhny Novgorod
- Parking. If you come to Nizhny Novgorod by car, be sure to check the availability of parking nearby before ordering a room/booking an apartment, because there are big problems with this, especially in the tourist center. - Supermarkets. Along the main tourist streets of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya and Rozhdestvenskaya there are many cafes and restaurants, but their prices are quite high. If you want to eat cheap, you can go to the supermarket Spar or magnet city. They sell simple ready meals and have tables for their consumption.
