General information
Diveevo (Deveevo) is a small but well-known village in Russia in Nizhny Novgorod region with a population of about 9 thousand, a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination. The village is located in the south of the region, 180 kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod and 60 from Arzamas (Diveevo on the map of Russia).
The history of this village began somewhere around 1559 (mention in written sources - since 1614). The name of the village, according to the official version, came from the first owner – Devey, who was a Tatar murza.
Diveevo is located on the small Vichkinze River. There was a small church in the center of the village, where pilgrims stopped on their way to the Sarov Monastery. Soon the stone Kazan Church was built in the 1780s, and then, having received the blessing, the residents built the Church of the Nativity of Christ and the Nativity of the Virgin. A convent was built around the church, one of four, which according to legend was under the patronage of the Most Holy Theotokos.
One of the sacred events of Diveevo is that the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov are located here. Every year hundreds of thousands of believers come here from all over the country to pray. Such a rest can suit all believers. But not only believers will be interested here. Diveevo is also visited with great interest by the most ordinary tourists in the form of excursions from Nizhny Novgorod or independently. The temples and sights of the village are of interest to them here.
It was the large number of pilgrims and tourists that helped the village of Diveevo develop not only as a center of spirituality, but also as a place with good infrastructure. As in any tourist place, you can buy souvenirs here, there are shops with them at every step. Most often, people bring icons from Deveyev, the holy land, rye crackers – it's better to buy them in temples, since they are consecrated there. Villagers at the fair also offer to buy products made of gold, silver, glass, various magnets, caskets and key rings.
The choice of cafes and restaurants is small, but there are still a few decent places. For example, in the "Pelmeni" you can eat well and cheaply, national cuisine is presented here. Pilgrims can eat at the monastery for free, while you need to have food stamps. For parishioners in churches there are buffets where you can eat buns and pies.
One of the best hotels in Diveevo is "Diveevskaya Sloboda". Also an excellent complex, including a hotel and a restaurant - "Olympus", which managed to appeal to tourists with a large purse. True, the prices for ordinary villagers are sky-high, but the service is at the highest level. But most often tourists and pilgrims stay in rented apartments. You can also spend the night in monasteries for free, but for this you will need to help with household chores: sweep, clear snow, etc.
There is little entertainment here, as it is a center of spiritual recreation. There is a sense of peace and tranquility everywhere here.
The disadvantages of this place include tourists and pilgrims such as an undeveloped transport interchange (far from Nizhny Novgorod, it is difficult to get there), a lot of mosquitoes in summer, and most importantly - that the commercial spirit has penetrated into such a sacred place. For example, gasoline is more expensive there than in villages 10-20 km away, and souvenirs cost as in world capitals.
