We've been to both Dombay and Arkhyz many times in different seasons, and each time these two resorts surprise us. One — with its compactness and "Soviet-era" coziness, the other — with its rapid development and wild nature. But the question "which is better to go to" remains open for most travelers, as well as for us. Let's honestly analyze both directions without embellishment so you can make an informed choice.
Comparing Infrastructure: Civilization or a Village?
Dombay gives the impression of an established resort. Everything is compact: hotels, cafes, the market, and the lifts are within walking distance. There is a Sberbank branch with a 24-hour ATM, which is a big plus. There are many shops, but prices are, of course, "resort-style". Unfortunately, cards are not accepted everywhere, especially in the private sector and at the market, so you can't do without cash.
The situation in Arkhyz is different. The main life buzzes on the only paved street, Lenin Street. There's only one ATM at the post office (and it works intermittently), and the nearest gas station is 50 km away in Zelenchukskaya. However, local markets are pleasantly affordable, especially for fruit and khychins. But be prepared that plastic cards are also not widely used here. Plus, there's one nuance: the village of Arkhyz itself and the Arkhyz ski resort (Romantik) are different places, separated by 10 km of road, which creates a lot of inconvenience in winter if you've come for skiing.
Prices and Accommodation: Where to Stay Cheaper?
If we compare just the prices for accommodation and food, then Arkhyz wins in summer in terms of affordability. There are many guest houses and recreation centers in the village where you can rent a room from 2500 rubles for two. But there are also pitfalls: many options are far from the center, and you'll have to walk or take a taxi.
In Dombay, the choice of accommodation is huge — from budget rooms to 3-star hotels. However, even in the low season, prices here are higher. But you pay for the location: from any hotel to the lift is no more than a 15-minute walk; everything is very compact here.
| Parameter | Dombay | Arkhyz | ATMs/Branches | Yes (Sberbank) | 1 ATM (Sberbank), works intermittently | Nearest Gas Station | 25 km (Teberda) | 50 km (Zelenchukskaya) | Card Payment | Rare, mostly cash | Almost never, only cash | Average Room Price (2 people) | from 2000 rubles | from 1500 rubles | Lunch at a Cafe (per person) | from 400 rubles | from 300 rubles (in the village) | Khychyns/Pies | from 300 rubles | from 250 rubles (more expensive in Romantik) |

Important tip: it's better to come to both Dombay and Arkhyz with a supply of groceries. Chain supermarkets (like Magnit) are only in Karachaevsk (on the way to Dombay) and in Zelenchukskaya (on the way to Arkhyz). Local stores mark up prices by 1.5-2 times.
Attractions and Activities: On Foot or by Jeep?
Both resorts are famous for their nature, but the approach to seeing it is different. In Dombay, most attractions (Alibek Waterfall, Turiye Lake, Amanauz Gorge) are within walking distance or at the start of tourist routes. The trails are equipped, there are signs, though without preparation you'll have to work hard — the elevation changes are significant. An additional plus: you can easily go to Teberda to the zoo or to the Shoaninsky Temple.
Arkhyz, on the other hand, is a true paradise for hikers and lovers of wild nature. The stunningly beautiful Dukka Lakes, Sofia Lakes, waterfalls... But getting to them is harder. Many trails are long, requiring physical fitness and good trekking shoes. However, there is the "Alanian Settlement" — a unique archaeological monument unlike anything in Dombay.
In our opinion, for relaxing family walks and day trips, Dombay is better — everything is compact here and logistics are simpler. But for those who are ready for real adventures and want to see wild, untouched nature, Arkhyz will reveal itself in all its glory.

Where is Skiing Better: Slopes and Lifts
In winter, both resorts are transformed, but the problems remain. In Dombay, there are three stages of lifts that go up to over 3000 meters, and the slopes are right in the village. This is a huge plus: step out of the hotel — and you're on the slope. However, many skiers complain about outdated equipment, queues, and a "wild" approach to selling ski passes (sometimes money is simply handed over).
In Arkhyz, the ski cluster (Romantik settlement and Lunaya Polyana) is 10 km from the village. This means you need to solve the transport issue every morning. On weekends and holidays, multi-kilometer traffic jams form at the entrance to Romantik, and parking is catastrophically insufficient. The slopes themselves are new, the lifts are more modern, but the resort's infrastructure is still a bit "raw".
For skiers and snowboarders: choose Dombay if ski-in/ski-out and developed infrastructure off the slopes are important to you. Choose Arkhyz if you're willing to put up with traffic jams for more modern lifts and less crowded slopes on weekdays. According to experienced skiers' reviews, skiing in Arkhyz is more comfortable in the middle of the week when there's no influx of local tourists.
When is the Best Time to Go: Choosing the Season
Seasonality is what dramatically changes the impression of both resorts. Here's how we usually advise friends:
- Winter (December-February): definitely for skiing. If your goal is to ski, logistics are more convenient in Dombay. If you want a calmer skiing experience on new slopes, take a closer look at Arkhyz, but be prepared for parking issues. For regular tourism, winter is not an option; you won't see anything, and prices will double.
- Summer (June-August): ideal for hiking and getting to know nature. In Dombay, the routes are easier and more accessible. In Arkhyz, they are more epic, but also more difficult; however, almost all are free (no entrance fee to the reserve). It gets cool in the mountains in the evenings, so bring a jacket even in summer.
- Indian Summer (September-October): a great time, especially for Arkhyz. There are few tourists, the weather is sunny, but it's already a bit cold for overnight stays in tents.
Weather secret: In both Dombay and Arkhyz, the same rule applies in summer: morning — sun, afternoon — clouds and possible rain. We've encountered this picture many times. Therefore, for serious routes, set out early in the morning, around 7-8 AM. It's advisable to finish the active part by 2-3 PM to avoid getting wet.
We hope this breakdown helps you decide whether to go to compact and cozy Dombay or to the wilder but rapidly growing Arkhyz. And if time and budget allow, the best option is to visit both resorts: they are in the same region, and the impressions from each will be completely different and unique in their own way.
