Dombai (Dombai, also Dommai) - a small resort village at an altitude of about 1600 meters above sea level in the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, 1615 kilometers (by road) from Moscow and 125 kilometers from the capital of the Republic of Cherkessk (Dombay on the map of the Republic. Less than 6 kilometers in a straight line in the mountains is the border with the state Abkhazia. The permanent population of the village is just over 650 people, at the expense of tourists in the high season (in winter). it increases at times.

This is the most popular resort in Karachay-Cherkessia, and it is known primarily as a ski resort. Its potential for the development of sports tourism was recognized in the USSR, and in the 1960s a sports and tourist complex of hotels, recreation centers, ski lifts and ski slopes began to be built here. As a result, today in Dombay formed one of the best conditions for skiing for both professionals and amateurs, and it is a real center of attraction for winter outdoor activities.

However, even earlier, before the development of the village as a ski resort, mountaineering was actively developing here, one of the oldest mountaineering camps in the USSR "Alibek" appeared. Today, the routes laid by mountaineers have become part of the most visited one-day hiking routes to the sights of Dombay and the region as a whole, and therefore even if you are not fond of skiing or mountaineering, it is worth visiting Dombay and the region as a whole. It is especially good to do this in the summer, since in winter there is only skiing time, and there is simply nothing for ordinary tourists to do. But in the low season (in summer), hiking routes to natural beauty and attractions become available, stunning views of the surrounding mountains open, subalpine meadows are painted in all colors.

In summer it is easiest to visit Dombay in the form of a one-or two-day excursion from the more popular summer resorts of the Stavropol Territory (Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Essentuki, Zheleznovodsk). But it is quite possible to come here for a few days to make one-day hiking (hiking) along the routes of the Teberdinsky reserve, go on a jeep tour, ride ATVs or horses. Also from Dombay you can make multi-day hikes with a tent in the Reserve and conquer one of the peaks of the three thousandth, of which there are a lot. Dombay is also very popular among residents of neighboring regions (Stavropol and Krasnodar Territory, Rostov region) as a vacation spot for weekly weekends.

Tourist infrastructure in Dombay

Dombay is a small and very compact village, which can be bypassed on foot in 30 minutes. It is almost completely tourist: there are hotels and accommodation everywhere, excursions are offered, many cafes and restaurants. There is a market, many shops and stalls with souvenirs and goods for tourists. There are no chain supermarkets here, but you can buy almost everything the same in local grocery stores, only the prices for popular goods and products are one and a half to two times higher than in chain supermarkets in large cities, even in the neighborhood. If you need to save money and you will cook yourself, then it makes sense to buy food in the nearest Magnit supermarket in Karachayevsk at the exit to the road towards Teberda and Dombay. Plastic cards are not accepted everywhere, so it is better to always have cash with you. Some merchants accept online transfers as payment. In the center there is a branch of Sberbank and a round-the-clock ATM, but there are no ATMs of other banks.

But, unfortunately, it cannot be objectively said that the tourist infrastructure here is well organized and civilized. Excursions and other tourist services are offered for the most part by private guides and guides without any guarantee and insurance, and their purchase and registration takes place by phone or in person without concluding contracts. We are not talking about the fact that you will be deceived, this happens here very rarely, but in case of an incident you will not receive any compensation. The organization of excursions is also not always on top: long waits, broken transport and cancellation of excursions are the norm. The same applies to tourist transport, taxis, equipment rental and other things. Even some lifts work simply on the principle that you put money in the hands of a person on the street and they put you in the chair of the lift.

Where and what to eat, food

There are many restaurants and cafes in Dombay, Caucasian and Russian cuisine is widely represented, there is a pizzeria. But the prices for food in the cafe are quite high, from 400 rubles for lunch per person. You can eat inexpensively in the only dining room next to the pedestrian suspension bridge (from 150 rubles per dish), or in pavilions with local fast food (khychins and Ossetian pies from 15 USD).

If you really need to save money, then it is best to cook on your own, if there is an opportunity for this in the accommodation facility. Products for cooking are cheaper to buy on the way to Dombay in chain supermarkets in Karachayevsk or other cities.

In the markets and in stores, prices are about the same. But the market is very well traded, especially when buying several items you can get a discount of up to 30%.

Hotels and accommodation in Dombay, where to stay

There are no problems with finding accommodation in Dombay, there are many hotels, guest houses, private housing for rent. You can find and book a hotel or apartment through the world's booking systems, bulletin boards, and old contacts. However, keep in mind that there are also unpleasant moments with the inability to check into private apartments/housing even for paid armor. This happens due to the fact that in pursuit of profit, the owners hand over already booked options at a higher price, and the arriving tourists are at best settled in cheaper options, or even simply left on the street. To avoid this, it is better to always keep in touch with the owners of the apartments by phone until the very last moment. In winter, accommodation prices rise, because this is the High ski season. But in the summer prices go down, and you can get very decent discounts when booking in advance. It is especially important to book accommodation in advance if your stay falls on a weekly weekend from Friday to Sunday: these days there are few places, prices rise greatly.

As for the choice of location of the hotel/accommodation, this issue in Dombay is not at all fundamental. The village is small, and wherever you settle, you can walk to the center or the lifts in 10-15 minutes.

Weather, tourist seasons

Dombay is a year-round resort, but the seasons vary depending on the purpose of your trip. In summer, of course, you will not go there for the sake of skiing, but in winter you should not go here in order to see the sights. Here's more about the tourist seasons in Dombay so you can decide for yourself. When is the best time for you to go there:

Winter (December-February). Winter is high season. Winters here are mild, severe frosts are rare. Average temperatures range from -2°C to 0°C degrees. But there is plenty of snow, and already in December the ski season opens. Experienced skiers advise skiing in February and March, as snow at this time is best suited for this. But to go to Dombay not for the sake of skiing, but just to get acquainted with the village and its sights there is no sense: you will not see anything, but you will overpay decently.

What is bad, the prices for accommodation grow at times, especially during the New Year and the long New Year holidays from January 1 to January 8-9.
Spring (March-May). In the spring you can still ski, but in April the snow is already too wet and sticky, and in May it already begins to melt, and is not suitable for skiing. The ski season officially closes at the end of April.

Regular (non-ski) tourist trips at this time are possible, but not recommended. In March and April, there will still be nothing to do, and in May – too rainy and cold for mountain hikes to attractions.
Summer (June-August). This is an ideal time to get acquainted with the nature and beauty of the region, for mountaineering, trekking and hiking. All hiking trails are open, there are cable cars for those who do not want to climb on foot. June can still be cold for overnight camping in the mountains. Even in the hottest months of July and August in the evenings and at night in the village is cool, the temperature can drop below +10℃.

Prices for accommodation in the summer are reduced, there are few tourists on weekdays. Some cafes, restaurants, and other tourist infrastructure are temporarily closed.
Autumn (September-November). September and October are still acceptable times for hiking and sightseeing, but it gets chilly, especially in the mountains. For long hikes with an overnight stay in a tent, you should dress warmly and use a sleeping bag for temperatures of +5°C. In November, snow falls, the trails become inaccessible. Some ski enthusiasts start skiing at the end of November, but the official opening of the ski season takes place only in December.

The weather in Dombay in spring, summer and autumn is very changeable and almost unpredictable. We (the authors of the site) even faced a situation where authoritative weather sources on the internet showed that it was raining now, although in fact there was excellent sunny weather, what can we say about the forecast for one or three days ahead. But in general, the weather here is most often built according to this scheme: in the morning and in the morning it is sunny and cloudless; by about noon the sky is covered with clouds, and short-term rain is possible at any time in the afternoon. Given this, it is best to go on tourist routes early in the morning in order to have time to finish most of the way in the morning.

How to get there

Dombay is located 1,620 kilometers from Moscow (Dombai on the map). It is impossible to get to it directly from the regions of the Russian Federation by public transport, you will have to make several transfers, or use a taxi or tourist transfer. Only in the high season (in winter) are sometimes organized direct commercial bus flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg, or Mineralnye Vody. And of course the best option to get to Dombay at any time of the year – by private car. In other cases, you will first have to get to Teberda, Cherkessk, or Nevinnomyssk, and then take a direct bus/minibus to Dombay.

Dombay sights, what to see

The main attractions of Dombay are natural beauty. The village is surrounded by incredible beauty of mountains and gorges, mountain rivers and waterfalls, lakes and glaciers. Most of these places can be visited during one-day tourist routes through the territory of Teberdinsky reserve, but to get acquainted with them yourself, you need to be ready to walk decently, and, as a rule, up and down (drops reach several hundred meters). If you do not want to walk, you can do part of the journey on your own SUV, or hire an Excursion SUV on the spot. But there are very few organized group excursions in Dombay, so you will have to negotiate with drivers and distributors on the streets, or order a tour by phone from advertisements that are placed everywhere. At the beginning of the routes, drivers on off-road vehicles are also sometimes on duty, or you can sit down with them already on the route.

Also from Dombay you can visit some places and sights of Teberda and more distant surroundings, but for this you will first have to get to the beginning of the tourist route or to the city by taxi, private transport, or buses that go very rarely.

Entertainment in Dombay is quite a bit, especially in summer. As entertainment, you can ride one of the ski lifts, visit the bath or sauna, rent an ATV or ride horses. Rafting is offered (from 800 USD). You can go to Cherkessk in one of two thermal springs (paid). In the evening you can sit in one of the bars or cafes, but there are no discos with modern music.
