How to get to Dombay

Dombay is located 1,620 kilometers from Moscow (Dombai on the map). It is impossible to get to it directly from the regions of the Russian Federation by public transport, you will have to make several transfers, or use a taxi or tourist transfer. Only in the high season (in winter) are sometimes organized direct commercial bus flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg, or Mineralnye Vody. And of course the best option to get to Dombay at any time of the year – by private car. In other cases, you will first have to get to Teberda, Cherkessk, or Nevinnomyssk, and then take a direct bus/minibus to Dombay.

By plane

The nearest airports to Dombay are in Mineralnye Vody, Stavropol, Krasnodar. It is most convenient to get through Mineralnye Vody airport, since it is closer, and many flights from cities of the Russian Federation and abroad are operated to it.

Mineralnye Vody International Airport (IATA code: MRV, airport website - http://mvairport.ru/) – one of the largest in this region. It operates flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Yekaterinburg and many other cities. There are international flights to Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Dubai, Yerevan, Baku, Thessaloniki. Some flights are only in high season (summer).

How to get from the airport to Dombay

Minvod airport is 200 kilometers from Dombay (Mineralnye Vody airport on the map). Directly by public transport from there to Dombay can not be reached, so the preferred option is to immediately leave the airport by taxi or tourist transfer.

You can find a taxi on the spot on arrival at the airport, but you need to bargain to a reasonable price. It is more convenient and comfortable to book a tourist transfer in advance. This is a little more expensive than the cost of a taxi after haggling, but more reliable, besides, when traveling in a group, it is not so expensive. You can order a car for 4 or even 7 people. If a taxi is too expensive for you, then you will have to go with a transfer in Mineralnye Vody and Teberda according to the following scheme:

• 1. from the airport by taxi for about 130 rubles or by minibus No. 11 for 15 rubles (run every 20-30 minutes, on the way 20 minutes) get to the Mineralnye Vody bus station. Minibus number 11 does not go directly to the bus station, but to the stop, from where the bus station is 10 minutes on foot, so a taxi is preferable.
• 2.from the Minvod bus station, a bus departs daily at 14:45 to Teberda, the cost is 461 rubles, 6 hours on the way. Arrives at the conditional bus station in the center of Teberda at Dombayskaya STR., 2 (Teberdy bus station on the map. Back from Teberda, the same flight departs in the morning at 06:35.
• 3. from Teberda to Dombay, take a taxi from 400 rubles, or wait for the bus. Buses (passing) go several times a day, see below for details.

By bus

There are no direct buses to Dombay from other regions of the Russian Federation. Only sometimes in the high season can tourist commercial flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg, or Mineralnye Vody be launched. The trip from Moscow by bus takes more than a day.

If direct buses to Dombay can not be found, you will have to get with a transfer through Mineralnye Vody, Nevinnomyssk, Karachayevsk. In addition, sometimes you have to make an additional transfer to Teberda, or reach Teberda, and from there take a taxi (400 USD). In general, you need to understand that the schedule is not constant and can change from low season to high, and from year to year. Therefore, it is better to clarify routes and schedules before traveling.

• Through Mineralnye Vody

  It is convenient to go by bus through Minvody with a transfer from an airplane, train, or bus from other regions, but there is no direct bus from Minvody to Dombay, only with a transfer in Teberda.

  From the bus station Minvod daily at 14:45 bus departs to Teberda, cost 461 rubles, 6 hours on the way. Buses pass through Pyatigorsk, Essentuki and Kislovodsk, where they can also be boarded. Then from Teberda to Dombay, take a taxi from 400 rubles, or wait for the bus. Buses (passing) go several times a day, see below for details.

• Via Nevinnomyssk and Karachayevsk

  Through Nevinnomyssk it is convenient to get with a transfer from the train (you will have to get from the railway station to the bus station by taxi), or get to it by bus, there are quite a lot of flights from the cities of the Russian Federation.

  From Nevinnomyssk three times a day at 07:20, 10:20 and 15:00 a bus departs at a cost of 430 rubles, on the way 4 hours directly to Dombay, or in low season to Teberda.

  All buses from Nevinnomyssk, Minvod and other cities must pass through Karachayevsk, where they can be boarded.

• From Kislovodsk

  In the high season (in winter), a tourist bus from Kislovodsk can be launched, 4 hours on the way. Check the schedule on the spot.

• Through Teberda

  There are buses to Teberda from Mineralnye Vody (see above), Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don (see Schedule), from Stavropol (5 hours on the way, cost 550 rubles, departure at 07:10 and 15:40.

By train

To get to Dombay by train, you will have to make several transfers, or from the train immediately change to a taxi or tourist transfer. You need to go by train to Mineralnye Vody or Nevinnomyssk, in extreme cases to Stavropol or Nalchik.

• Through Mineralnye Vody

  To the railway station Mineralnye Vody in high season there are a huge number of trains at least from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Adler Orsk, Yekaterinburg, Novokuznetsk, Kirov, Rostov-On-Don, Baku, Grozny, Novorossiysk, Vladikavkaz, Irkutsk, Tynda and many other cities along their routes. The schedule may change by season, you can specify on the official website of Russian Railways.

  From the railway station you can get to Dombay by taxi or tourist transfer (see above). If a taxi is too expensive, you need to get from the railway station to the new Minvod bus station by taxi or city bus/minibus No. 11, and from there by intercity bus to Teberda and then to Dombay.

• Via Nevinnomyssk

  Almost all trains to Mineralnye Vody make a stop in Nevinnomyssk, so this option is even more preferable. From the railway station we will need to take a taxi for 100 rubles or by public transport to the bus station Nevinnomyssk (B-R Mira, 39). Buses depart from the bus station at least three times a day to Dombay or Teberda depending on the season. Departure at 07:20, 10:20 and 15:00, cost from 430 rubles, 4 hours on the way.

By car

This is perhaps the most convenient option for traveling to Dombay and the region as a whole. Not only can you get here directly by car, but you can also get around the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia by visiting Teberda and Arkhyz, and you can also capture resorts of the Stavropol Territory and Adygea. It is especially good to come here by SUV, since some car tourist routes are only available for them.

The road to Dombay itself is excellent, with clear speed indicators and smooth turns, although it is considered Serpentine. In dry weather, you can drive at the limit of speed limits, but during ice, rain or fog, it is better to be very careful and go slower. Also, sometimes there are problems due to the weather and difficult terrain: landslides, mudslides, flooding and large hail, but in 2019, work began on the installation of protective structures, and the road should become even safer. Nevertheless, before the trip itself, it is better to clarify the state of the roads through news portals.

There are no problems with parking in Dombay. For long-term parking, you can use paid parking, which all cost the same here-100 rubles/day. There are several such parking lots, it will not be difficult to find them: all are marked with signs, or you can ask the locals. Some hotels provide their own free parking on site, as you can find out from the description when booking.

There are no gas stations in Dombay, the nearest ones are in Teberda, 25 kilometers away. At the entrance to Teberda there is a network gas station "Rosneft", in the city" Bashneft" and "South-Transneft". The price of fuel is 20-40 kopecks higher than in the major cities of Karachay-Cherkessia.

Transport Dombay, what to move

Dombay is a very small village, and all of it from end to end can be walked in 15 minutes. Transportation may be needed only to get to the beginning of tourist routes, or to get to Teberda or bus station.

For a trip by jeep along one of the three tourist routes (see dombai attractions), they ask for 1,500 rubles per car. A trip within the village will cost 80 rubles, and for intercity it is worth counting on about 15 rubles per kilometer. A trip to Teberda by taxi will cost 450 rubles.

You can use the Yandex.Taxi and other apps to order a taxi, but they often don't have cars in the area. In this case, you can order a car on one of the phones, which are very much placed on the ads on the streets.
