General information and why go to Dagestan?

Republic of Dagestan is the largest and most multinational of the republics of the Caucasus in the Russian Federation. The capital is the city of Makhachkala. It is located in the south of the Russian Federation and is the southernmost of the Russian republics. It borders with the Republic of Kalmykia, the Stavropol Territory, the Chechen Republic, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Half of the territory of Dagestan is occupied by lowlands, the rest falls on the mountains and foothills of the Greater Caucasus. In the east, the territory is washed by the Caspian Sea, the length of the coastline of which is about 400 kilometers within the republic, and a considerable part of them are beaches suitable for recreation and swimming.

The main part of the population consists of the peoples of Dagestan (Avars, Dargins, Kumyks, Lezgins, Laks and others). The predominant religion is Islam. Nevertheless, everyone here speaks Russian well, which is the main state language along with the languages of the peoples of Dagestan. Therefore, there will be no language barrier when communicating with local residents.

Over the past few years, Dagestan has become very popular with vacationers and tourists, because Russians do not need any visas or permits to visit. This was largely facilitated by the pandemic and the restrictions and bans imposed on flights to other countries, but Dagestan justly deserved the attention of tourists and met expectations. There are opportunities for beach holidays at the sea, wellness at hot springs, sightseeing, hiking. The republic is very rich in historical and natural attractions, some of which are unique and striking in their scale. There are many ancient and unique cultural monuments, waterfalls, caves, canyons, majestic beautiful mountains. Combined with the hospitality and openness of the locals, a holiday in Dagestan will be an unforgettable adventure.

Where to go to Dagestan?

There are several large cities in Dagestan, including tourist ones, and there are beach resorts. But the biggest interest for inquisitive travelers and tourists are small mountain villages and villages. Officially, the type of settlements "aul" in Dagestan is not used, but some ancient or abandoned settlements, known as landmarks, are usually called ghost villages.

Here are the most developed cities, villages and towns in Dagestan, where you can come on vacation or use them as a place to stop while traveling:

  • Makhachkala is the capital of the Republic and the largest city. There are no outstanding sights and tourist attractions in Makhachkala, but only a few museums, monuments, temples, mosques and city beaches, and therefore tourists usually do not stay here. Here is the only airport in Dagestan, there is a railway station. You can stay here for one or two days, there is nothing to do longer.
  • Kaspiysk. Kaspiysk is sometimes perceived as a suburb of Makhachkala, although officially it is an independent city. There are no attractions here, but there are beaches and even tourist infrastructure for beach holidays, there is a water park.
  • Izberbash. It is a small town on the coast, and the main beach resort of Dagestan. The beach infrastructure has been developing here for many years, although, of course, the Black Sea resorts are very far away. But there is an inexpensive water park and free hot springs.
  • Derbent. If Makhachkala is the administrative capital of the Republic of Dagestan, then Derbent is the tourist capital of the region. This is the oldest city in Russia, filled with historical sights and museums, and there are even beaches here.
  • P. Dubki. By itself, the village is of little interest to tourists, but there are viewing points on the Sulak Canyon, and from here you can visit several of their attractions.
  • S. Kubachi. Kubachi is known far beyond the borders of the Republic for the production of unique silverware – weapons, knives, dishes, jewelry. The village can be visited during the day as an attraction, or you can stay here for one night or longer to walk around the neighborhood and get acquainted with local life and sights.
  • S. Khunzakh. An ancient village in the mountainous part of Dagestan, a convenient starting point for exploring the surrounding sights and an inexpensive alternative for accommodation for several days instead of the village of Gunib.
  • S. Akhty. One of the oldest settlements of Dagestan, so far not very popular as a resort and independently a tourist destination. But it's worth going here to visit the ghost village of Gra, see the Akhtyn fortress, swim in the hot Akhtyn springs and more.

And here are the most popular attractions and iconic places in Dagestan, which are not independent resorts or cities, but definitely worth a visit:

  • Sulak Canyon is the most exciting natural attraction of Dagestan and a place that we undoubtedly recommend to visit every guest of the Republic.
  • Barkhan Sary-Kum is a unique natural place in Dagestan, one of the highest dunes in Eurasia, its height is 262 m.
  • Chirkeyskaya HPP is one of the largest industrial attractions of Dagestan and the most powerful hydroelectric power plants in Russia. It is not difficult to die from the observation deck and visit with an excursion.
  • Chirkeyskoye reservoir is a huge artificial reservoir that appeared as a result of the construction of the Chirkeyskaya HPP. It attracts with beautiful views, there are not equipped beaches on its rocky and sandy shores, boat trips are offered.
  • Gamsutl is the most famous and most visited ghost village in Dagestan.
  • Akhtyn hot springs - equipped hydrogen sulfide sources of hot natural water from the neighboring Ukhindag mountain. Water is saturated with hydrogen sulfide and beneficial trace elements, and it is believed that it has a therapeutic effect on joints, muscles and skin, relaxes and fills with strength.
  • Akhtyn Fortress is a historical monument and an object of cultural heritage of federal significance of the XIX century in the village of Akhty, notable for being the southernmost fortress in Russia. Unfortunately, it is almost in an abandoned state.
  • Abandoned aul-ghost Gra - its charm is that it is located far from the main tourist routes and is little known among mass tourists. But it's definitely worth a visit.
  • Karabudakhkent caves is a little-known small cave with thousands of bats, visited for free and only independently.
  • Free hot springs in Izberbash - equipped hydrogen sulfide springs, officially recognized as therapeutic.
  • Khuchninskaya or fortress of seven brothers and one sister is a medieval fortress, one of the brightest historical sights of Dagestan, which is usually visited from Derbent. But, in our opinion, it is also worth coming here from other places in the Republic.
  • The ancient Gulli Bridge is a picturesque wooden bridge built more than 300 years ago without a single nail.
  • Khanag waterfall is not a very high waterfall, but it is full-flowing almost all year round, easily accessible by car and well equipped for recreation.
  • Fort Dag-Bars - ruins of an ancient fortress, abandoned from the defensive wall of Dag-Bars V-VI centuries. Unfortunately, there is not much left of the fort, so you can come here only in passing.
  • Kuzhnik natural bridge is a natural landmark, a stone arch formed naturally.
  • Hydrogen sulfide source "Goryachka" is a free hot spring with an unusual "burning water".
  • Armenian Church in Nyugdi is an ancient and significant church for believers built in 1916, a monument of cultural heritage of federal heritage. But you can only inspect it from the outside, because it has been under restoration for several years.
  • Samur Forest is a unique natural area in the south of Dagestan, the only subtropical liana forest in Russia and one of the northernmost in the world. You can visit it yourself, but it is better with excursions.
  • Kala-Koreish is an old abandoned village in Dagestan and one of the most popular tourist attractions, a historical and architectural monument of the Middle Ages.
  • Saltinsky waterfall is a unique natural place in Dagestan, and perhaps the most famous, unusual and beautiful waterfall in the Republic. Its difference from other waterfalls is that it is underground.
  • Arch bridge of 1809 in Majalis - nothing special, just an old arch bridge that can be viewed on the way to Kubachi and Kala-Koreish.
  • Dagestan pyramids are amazing man–made sights that are distant "relatives", and according to some opinions even the predecessors of the famous rice terraces in Southeast Asian countries.
  • Watan is a memorial complex with a small museum dedicated to the heroic events of the people of Dagestan during the invasion of the Persian Shah Nadir Shah in the XIII century.
  • Waterfall Tobot or Khunzakhsky is one of the highest and highest mountain waterfalls in the Republic.
  • Itlyatlyar Waterfall is the "younger" neighbor of Tobot Waterfall, less well-known and popular, but no less beautiful and even higher.
  • Tsolotlinsky canyon is one of the largest and most beautiful natural attractions of the Khunzakhsky district, and it is from its steep cliffs that the waters of Tobot and Itlyatlyar fall.
  • Khunzakh (Araninsky) fortress is a Russian fortress of the XIX century, but, unfortunately, in poor condition and there is not much to see, since the military enlistment office is working inside.
  • Datong Temple is a medieval Christian church built in the IX-XI centuries, one of the most famous architectural and iconic sights of Dagestan.
  • The abandoned ghost village of Goor is one of the brightest historical sights of Dagestan, known for its towers and ruins of an ancient settlement
  • Troll Language is a rocky outcrop on top of a cliff above a picturesque gorge in the abandoned village of Goore. Without exaggeration, dizzying views open from it, perhaps even the most spectacular in the whole of Dagestan.
  • Scenic car route - during our trip to Dagestan, we "discovered" a very picturesque automobile route through the mountainous part of the Republic, which is not on tourist maps.
  • Matlas stone bowl is a deep gorge, along the bottom of which there is an equipped hiking trail.
  • Matlas Plateau is a large natural complex with several natural and man-made attractions at once: Khan and Matlas waterfalls, Khan baths, mosque, monument to Leo Tolstoy and H. Murat. And also here you can ride an extreme zipline, ride horses and ATVs, and soon there will be a ski resort.
  • Karadakh gorge is one of the most beautiful gorges in Dagestan, equipped for a tourist trail.
  • Koroda village is an old Avar village with an "Ancient city" and an "Underground Mosque".
  • Chokh village and Mamalov's house is a small, but one of the oldest Avar villages in Dagestan with an eventful history.
  • Gunib fortress is the main historical landmark of Gunib and the largest in this famous tourist village, a monument of architecture and history of regional significance.

Where to go to Dagestan for a beach holiday?

On the beach in Izberbash
On the beach in Izberbash

In the Republic of Dagestan there are several places for a full beach holiday. Of course, local resorts are still very far behind the Black Sea resorts in terms of scale and tourist service, but for those who need the sea first of all, and the rest is secondary, they may well like it here. For beaches here you should go to Izberbash or Kaspiysk. The situation with the beaches is a little worse in Derbent, they are dirty here. But Derbent itself is a very interesting city with sights, and there are quite decent sandy beaches on its outskirts and on the coast nearby. Well, in the last place is Makhachkala, where, although there is a city beach, but in our opinion it is not very suitable for a full-fledged beach holiday.

There are also very quiet and even wild places here. You can stay on the shore in a tent in the villages of Belidzhi, Primorsky, Arablyar, Kayakent. For a more organized holiday in the tent there are beach campsites Brigantine, Rubas, Lotus and others. The cost of accommodation in campsites starts from 800 rubles per tent.

When is it better to go to Dagestan, weather and climate?

Dagestan is the southernmost region of Russia, and is considered warm by the Sami. Summer is very hot here, temperatures sometimes reach up to 40 degrees, but at the same time it is believed that the summer heat here is milder than in the neighboring regions of the Astrakhan region and the Republic of Kalmykia. Winters in Dagestan are also mild, sub-zero temperatures are rare, and if snow falls, it melts quickly. The sea is never covered with ice. However, in mountainous areas, snowfalls are more frequent and cover everything with a white blanket for a long time, because the temperature at altitude is lower than at sea level.

  • Summer in Dagestan

The best time to travel to Dagestan on vacation or on a trip is summer, starting from June to the first half of September. This period is great for beach and sightseeing holidays. You can swim, sunbathe, spend a lot of time walking in the fresh air, hiking and fishing. But, nevertheless, you need to know that in the first half of June for comfortable bathing, especially with children, it may still be cool, but by the end of June the water is already warming up well.

  • Spring and autumn in Dagestan

In spring and late autumn, unlike Sochi, it gets noticeably cooler here. And if the air temperature is still comfortable during the day, then by the evening it drops significantly. More rainy and cloudy days are coming. It makes sense to come here in the velvet season only if you want to save money and you are not very interested in a beach holiday. But for sightseeing trips, this is not a bad time, because the number of tourists at iconic attractions is decreasing, as are the prices for guide services.

  • Winter in Dagestan

There is nothing much to do in Dagestan in winter. There is snow on the coast and in the mountains and it is cold. But if you have already found yourself in here, it is better to spend time in large coastal cities, visit Makhachkala, Derbent, and go to museums. In mountainous areas, it can be difficult and dangerous to move in winter.

The major cities of Dagestan are well connected by bus with the nearest regions. There are flights, at least from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Kislovodsk, Essentuki, Kazan, Krasnodar, Nalchik, Novorossiysk, Sevastopol, Stavropol.

  • By car

    Scenic road route in Dagestan
    Traveling by car in Dagestan

From Moscow and other regions in the European part of the Russian Federation, Dagestan can be reached by the M4 toll road or by the free M6. Travel on the M4, of course, is more comfortable, but in terms of time and length it is even longer, so it doesn't make much sense to go completely on the toll road. If you still decide to choose the M4, then the fare will cost from 2000 rubles, and an increase in tariffs is expected in 2023. You can get detailed information to Avtodor's website.

When traveling on free roads, the route can be laid through Volgograd, Elista or Astrakhan, where you can make stops for a day or two to explore their sights. On the M4, you can go through Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Pyatigorsk and other KMV resorts, where you can also make stops to diversify your road trip. In any case, your way from the eastern regions will pass through Volgograd, after which you can drive through Elista or Astrakhan.

The main intercity roads in the southern regions of the Russian Federation are mostly good, and Dagestan is no exception. When entering the Republic and when passing through Ingushetia or Chechnya, you will have to pass through roadblocks. Driving through them is nothing complicated, there are no queues there with rare exceptions. It is mandatory to check the documents of the driver and all passengers, additionally transport and luggage can be checked. Be sure to take all the necessary documents in the originals on the trip and do not forget the birth certificates for children.

Since traveling by car is always fraught with risk, we advise you to issue voluntary CASCO insurance in addition to compulsory CTP insurance, which will protect you from unforeseen expenses in case of an accident, unpleasant weather surprises, damage to the car by ill-wishers, theft and other troubles. And if you are running out of CTP, then today it is most profitable to arrange it online on these sites:

How to travel around Dagestan, transport?

Minibus on Makhachkala street
Minibus on Makhachkala street

In our opinion, the ideal option for traveling in Dagestan will be your own or rented transport. In this case, you will be able to freely plan your trips without being tied to individual guides or excursions. And if you also have a cross-country car, then you can get to such interesting places where most tourists do not get at all.

If you don't have your own car, you can use the booking of excursions or hire private guides. The latter option, by the way, is very popular here, since inexpensive group excursions are still poorly developed here, but we believe that everything will be fine soon. In the meantime, you can pick up individual guides and group tours in these tour shops with reviews:

Another transportation option is a taxi. You can order a taxi through the Yandex.Taxi, Uber, or Anzhi local taxi apps. Sometimes it is cheaper to negotiate with drivers on the street directly, but in order not to overpay, you need to know the prices in this direction, which can be done, again, through the mentioned applications. Just keep in mind that the taxi coverage area is not everywhere, and, unfortunately, sometimes you can take a taxi to some place, and you can't call it back.

And finally, let's talk about public transport. It is here, but it is poorly developed, it works mainly on the coast. Minibuses and buses run constantly and frequently between the major cities of Makhachkala, Derbent, Izberbash and Kaspiysk. But in the direction of the mountainous part of Dagestan, where most of the natural beauties and attractions are located, transport either does not go at all, or goes 1-2 times a day. So in our opinion, this option for traveling is not an option at all.

Urban public transport from buses and minibuses is available in Makhachkala, Derbent, Kaspiysk and Izberbash. There are even trolleybuses in Makhachkala. You can use it for short trips, but it's not very convenient. If you still decide, you can use the Yandex.maps or 2Gis applications to plan your route. Most of the city routes are marked on them.

How to dress in Dagestan and the rules of conduct?

How to dress in Dagestan
Local girls in Dagestan quietly wear open clothes

There are many stereotypes about Dagestan, and one of them is about clothes. For example, that here women should walk almost in a burqa. In fact, although there are national traditions in clothing in the Republic, due to religion, everything is not so extreme, and the degree of freedom is present. Besides, let's not forget that resting here, we are still in our single big country, according to the constitution recognized as secular, and therefore no one has the right to force you to dress in public places the way you don't want.

Nevertheless, if you adhere to at least the minimum dress code in clothes, then by doing so you will arouse respect from the locals, or at least you will not cause irritation among the most skeptical tourists. Women are advised not to wear mini skirts, clothes with a deep neckline and bare shoulders, too transparent translucent clothes. It is better for men not to wear shorts that are too short.

And, of course, when visiting places of worship and sacred places, one should strictly adhere to the rules in clothing. At the entrance to the mosque, you need to take off your shoes, men take off their hats, and women cover their heads with a scarf. You can not enter in shorts, short skirts, tight jeans or pants, too bright clothes, with open shoulders. The same is true when visiting Christian churches, only it is not customary to take off your shoes. Women at the entrance to the mosque can use headscarves and capes for free.

As for the beaches in Dagestan, there are also no special prohibitions, and tourists relax in revealing swimsuits. On some beaches, where mostly locals rest, this can cause embarrassment and condemning looks, but on the city beaches of Izberbash, Dagestan or Makhachkala there are no problems with this.

Makhachkala City Beach

In public places, it is not customary to openly show feelings between couples, i.e. not to openly hug or kiss. Also, you should not drink alcohol in a public place, besides, this is an administrative violation under the laws of the Russian Federation.

Is it safe to go to Dagestan?

Traveling through Dagestan with a tent
Traveling in Dagestan is quite safe even with a tent

Yes, it is safe. Contrary to the stereotypes that persist in the minds of tourists from difficult times, now the situation here is completely calm, even in the mountains. Of course, you need to be aware that there are negative people everywhere, and Dagestan is no exception. But in general, the inhabitants of Dagestan are for the most part very friendly and welcoming even in the most remote corners.

Sometimes in our chat about Dagestan they ask the question: "Is it possible and safe to travel with a tent in Dagestan?". From our own experience, we will answer that it is possible, and it is safe.

What language is spoken in Dagestan?

It is officially determined that 14 nationalities live in Dagestan. And every nation here has its own language or dialect. But absolutely all nationalities in Dagestan speak Russian, even the elderly in the most remote villages. In general, in our opinion, the older generation knows Russian even better than the new generation, since they studied in stricter Soviet schools. So you can safely poison yourself on a trip to Dagestan without fear that you may not be understood somewhere.

Do bank cards work in Dagestan or do you need cash?

Of course, all cards of Russian banks work. There are ATMs, in many shops, at gas stations, in museums, in transport, you can freely pay with a card, there are no additional commissions. Olnain transfers are also widely accepted, especially for travel services. But still, it is better to always have at least a small cash reserve with you, because in small towns and villages, in mountainous areas, cards are not accepted everywhere, and it may not be possible to pay with an online transfer due to poor communication.

What is the Internet and cellular communication in Dagestan?

All Russian mobile operators work in Dagestan. There is no roaming here, i.e. everything is charged as national roaming as in all other regions of the Russian Federation: all incoming for free, Internet and calls according to your tariff. The reception area differs by operators, and given the difficult mountainous geography of the region, one should not expect an ideal reception here in any mountain village. However, in large cities and resorts, communication is stable, the Internet shows a 4G icon.

Some tourists complain that the Internet does not work on Tele-2 SIM cards. Indeed, this operator does not have its own network here, but the Internet and voice communication work through partner networks. To do this, you need to enable the national roaming option in the settings on your phone and restart the device. If the Internet does not work, then you need to call the operator's support service, they will help. After these actions, the Internet on the Tele-2 card works fine, we checked it ourselves.

Another feature of the use of mobile Internet in Dagestan is related to the proximity to the border. The problem is that when approaching the border with Azerbaijan, for example in the village of Primorsky, when traveling to the village of Kurush or on the way to Akhty, cell phones automatically switch to foreign networks with international roaming charges, which is very expensive. Usually, such a switch is reported by a welcome SMS from the operator with the content "Welcome to Azerbaijan ...", but as long as such an SMS reaches you, the smartphone may well automatically download several megabytes of traffic, which will be charged as international roaming. To prevent this from happening, turn off data transmission in the border area or put the device into flight mode.

Is it possible to buy alcohol in Dagestan?

Yes, it is possible, there is no such ban as in Chechnya here. Moreover, Dagestan has long been known for making wonderful alcoholic beverages here. Remember the famous Derbent champagne and Kizlyar cognacs. Alcohol is freely sold in shops and supermarkets, there are branded stores. However, you can not buy it everywhere. For example, in small mountain villages and towns it will be difficult to find it on sale.

What are the prices in Dagestan?

Prices in Dagestan do not differ fundamentally from the prices of other Russian regions. Everything is smooth enough, and there will be no sharp surprises. You can pay for purchases by cards, cash or transfer, but the last two options are most common. Cards are accepted at gas stations, chain supermarkets, large stores, museums and even public transport. However, for tourist services to guides and excursions, accommodation, entrance fees to some attractions, cafes and restaurants do not always accept cards. ATMs are available in all major cities and towns. No additional commission is charged for cash withdrawals, just like in other Russian regions.

In shops and supermarkets, prices are almost the same. In large tourist cities on the coast there are chain "Magnets", many local shops. The further away from the center into the mountains, the number of outlets becomes smaller, there are no network markets, and the price tag for basic products and goods will be slightly higher, but not significantly. We, the authors of the site, for example, in a small Akhty met a large supermarket with a huge assortment of goods at good prices.

As for the food in the cafe, everything is very democratic and affordable here. We will not write about individual dishes and their prices. We rarely eat in cafes, and everyone has their own preferences. Let's just note that the most favorite fast food in Dagestan for us were delicious miracle pies that we bought in different places, the average price tag is 250 rubles for a huge pie.

Rental housing in Dagestan varies depending on the season and your preferences, but everyone will be able to pick up something for themselves. Unlike the coast and cities with developed infrastructure, where the choice of accommodation is greater, it will be more difficult to find a room in mountain villages. On search engine sites, not every village can find offers for rent, and if it succeeds, the prices will be quite high. A backup option is to search on the spot and talk to the residents, who will definitely come up with something and try to help you, and sometimes even completely free of charge.

What to bring from Dagestan?

Dagestan souvenirs, Ethnodome Kubachi
Dagestan souvenirs

Pleasant memories and many beautiful photos will be the best gift from Dagestan. However, if you want to bring something for your family and friends, we advise you to pay attention, first of all, to silverware. Kubachin craftsmanship in the manufacture of dishes, from plates to sets, jewelry, souvenirs is known far beyond the borders of the republic and has ancient roots. Shops and shops selling such goods can be found near major attractions, in cities and, of course, in Kubachi itself.

Handmade ceramics and carpets, as well as textiles, will be a pleasant gift not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. True, carpets are not a cheap pleasure, however, true connoisseurs will appreciate the quality and uniqueness of each copy.

Fans of cold steel from Kizlyar will not be able to pass by all kinds of blades and knives. Here is a memorable gift that can become a passing from generation to generation.

In the fruit season, if the return trip allows, you can grab and bring your loved ones juicy local pomegranates, peaches, figs, persimmons, apricots. And if this does not work out, then you can buy dried fruits, which in terms of the amount of vitamins are in no way inferior to fresh ones. Do not forget about spices and nuts. There is also a very tasty and juicy mulberry growing here, but it will not work to bring it home, because it spoils quickly, you will have to eat it on the spot. Nutty paste – Urbech and nut grass became an unusual product for us. They can only be found at local markets and street vendors.

Local alcohol is appreciated by tourists who have visited Dagestan. Kizlyar cognac and Derbent wines will undoubtedly be a good souvenir for friends. It is better to buy them in branded stores or supermarkets.
