• By plane to Makhachkala airport, and from there to the city center by taxi or with transfers by public transport.

By train to Makhachkala

The railway station in Makhachkala is located just great for tourists, in the very center of the city (train station on the map). From here you can get to the hotel by taxi from 100 rubles or by city buses or trolleybuses from 27 rubles. It is better to order a taxi through applications, the public transport stop is located right at the exit from the station.

However, due to traffic jams and difficult conditions on the roads, it is not always easy and cheap to leave the railway station by transport, and sometimes it is faster to walk to the hotel than to stand in a car or bus in traffic jams.

By bus to Makhachkala

By car to Makhachkala

From Moscow and other regions in the European part of the Russian Federation, Makhachkala can be reached by the M4 toll road or by the free M6. Travel on the M4, of course, is more comfortable, but in terms of time and length it is even longer, so there is not much point in driving on the toll road. When traveling on free roads, the route can be laid through Volgograd, Elista or Astrakhan, where you can stop for a day or two to explore their sights. On the M4, you can go through Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Pyatigorsk and other KMV resorts, where you can also make stops to diversify your road trip. In any case, your way from the eastern regions will pass through Volgograd, after which you can drive through Elista or Astrakhan, depending on what you find more interesting.

The main intercity roads in the southern regions of the Russian Federation are mostly good, and Dagestan is no exception. When entering the Republic and when passing through Ingushetia or Chechnya, you will have to pass through roadblocks on the roads. Driving through them is nothing complicated, there are no queues there with rare exceptions. It is mandatory to check the documents of the driver and all passengers, additionally transport and luggage can be checked. Be sure to take all the necessary documents in the originals on the trip and do not forget the birth certificates for children.

And now, actually, about Makhachkala itself and the movement around the city by car. In our probably subjective opinion, drivers on the road here behave, to put it mildly, not very skillfully and aggressively. Frequent realignments, abrupt starts and stops in front of traffic lights are the norm for locals. They will constantly try to overtake you, even if there is no need for this and there is a red traffic light in front of you. Interestingly, this manner of driving is found in the city, and outside the city, local drivers drive much more calmly and even in compliance with traffic rules.

There are also enough traffic jams here, and as usual, they are created by the hasty drivers themselves. Therefore, if you do not have nerves of steel and do not have much driving experience, we advise you to use the car inside the city to a minimum, and instead travel by taxi or public transport. And in any case, it is inconvenient to travel by car, since there are not enough parking lots in the center.

As for long-term parking near the hotel or rented accommodation, there are no problems with this in Makhachkala. The places here are relatively quiet, cars are quietly left at the entrances for the night. However, if you choose accommodation in the very center, we advise you to take a closer look at the availability of parking near the object. The fact is that some streets and alleys of the center are very narrow, there is little space for traveling, which becomes dangerous for a car parked for a long time.
