What sights are there in Makhachkala and what to see?

Objectively speaking, Makhachkala is by no means the place to go for the sake of exploring the city's sights. Unfortunately, the city is relatively young, its history begins with the construction of the Petrovsky Fortress in 1844, and therefore there are no historical places here at all. And even what used to be a fortress has not been preserved at all, but only one historical place remains – Petrovsky Lighthouse. And even then it can be seen only partially from the side, and no more. Of the interesting things for tourists in Makhachkala, there are several museums worth visiting, the largest mosque in Russia, the ancient Orthodox cathedral. But what is bad, and it is important to know that Monday is an extremely bad day for exploring the sights of Makhachkala, since it is a day off in all city museums.

At the same time, Makhachkala is a convenient starting point for exploring other sights of Dagestan. Among the must-see top three places in the vicinity of Makhachkala: Sulak Canyon, Sary-Kum barkhan and Chirkey reservoir. All of them can be visited within one day with a guided tour or by yourself by car. Also, in one day with an excursion, by private transport or even by bus, you can go to the oldest city in Russia, Derbent. Although it is better, of course, to come to it for a couple of days, because there is a lot to see there.

In addition, one- and multi-day excursions to other amazing sights of Dagestan are sent from Makhachkala, such as ghost village Gamsutl, Saltinsky waterfall, in Hunzakh, Gunib, Kahib and Goor, and even to the neighboring region of Chechnya. In general, we can say that from here you can visit all the interesting places of Dagestan with excursions, or almost everything.

Multimedia Historical Park "Russia – my history"

In Makhachkala there is a museum of a major all-Russian project "Russia is my history". These are modern museums that tell about the history of Russia, where information is presented in the form of interactive displays and screens. However, in addition to the multimedia format, the Makhachkala Museum also presents a small number of archaeological exhibits, artifacts, documents and photos. Here you can learn a lot of interesting historical facts, watch movies, videos, listen to stories. Exhibitions, first of all, are educational and informative in nature. Their subject matter is changing, but for tourists it will be especially interesting to have a permanent section that introduces the history and peoples of the Republic of Dagestan.

We highly recommend that you visit this museum if you have time, even if you have been to similar places in other cities of the Russian Federation. Just keep in mind that this is still not a classic museum with real exhibits, but primarily a multimedia exhibition. So if you can't imagine getting to know history without examining artifacts and archaeological exhibits, you may not really like it here. In that case, it's better to go to the National Museum.
