What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Tarki-Tau Mountain is a natural monument of Dagestan and one of the active attractions in the city limits. You can climb it, from the top there are views of the city and the coast. The mountain is low, the highest point in the west is Cape Saryar, only 725 meters.
The ascent starts from the outskirts of the village of Tarki, you can climb both on foot and by car. However, the slopes of the mountain are strewn with sharp stones, and if you take care of the rubber, it is better to leave the car at the bottom and walk. Several hiking trails have been trodden along the very top, however, some of them are overgrown and it's impossible to walk along them, so it's better to stick to a dirt highway. Read more about the route below.
There are several viewing platforms on the hill, the nearest one from the foot and a good road is no more than 2 km away. There is also a cafe there. To the mountain "Cape Saryar", the highest point, will have to go more: the shortest walking distance is about 5 kilometers, and by car - all 10.
In general, a hike to Tarki-tau mountain will be a pleasant time for those who stayed in Makhachkala for a few days and have already looked at everything. Here you can have a picnic and relax. In windy weather, there may be cold winds at the top, it's worth grabbing a windbreaker.
An ancient settlement and the remains of fortress walls have been discovered on the slopes of Tarki-tau, but today they have not been preserved and it will not be possible to see them. And the famous Soviet poet R.G. Gamzatov is buried in the cemetery near Mount Tarki.

🚶 How to get there
Tarki-Tau Mountain is located just five kilometers from the city center in a straight line, but despite the short distance it is not so easy to get to it (Tarki-Tau observation deck on the map). But first you need to decide whether you need the peak itself with a height of 745 meters. The fact is that the views from it are not so good, besides, the passage there is closed, because there is an object of the Ministry of Defense. In practice, they go there along the old trails, but there is a chance of running into trouble, so we do not advise you to go behind the "Passage prohibited" signs. It is best to limit yourself to the observation decks, which are located above the cliff from the city and the sea, where most of those who want to visit this place rush.
Public transport in these parts goes badly, so it's better to go by car or taxi. You can get to the observation decks along a dirt road that originates in the village of Tarki, but not from the center of the village, but from Sportivnaya Street. Maps and navigators draw the road from the mosque from Chagar Aul Street, but in fact there is no road there. The road is not very good, rocky, but in dry weather you can easily get there by any car. But you need to drive carefully, the main danger is represented by sharp stones. If you do not dare to drive by car to the most observation, then you can leave it anywhere along the way, and then continue the route on foot.
If you don't have your own transport, then you can get here by city, though you'll have to go a lot. First you need to get on city routes to the ring with the Amet Khan Sultan memorial, and from there to the nearest observation deck on a dirt road 5 kilometers. But again, it is better to go not along the trails marked on the maps, but along the dirt road along Sportivnaya Street.
