General information about Makhachkala, holiday, infrastructure

Makhachkala is the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, the largest and most developed city in the region. Despite its large size and significance, Makhachkala cannot be called the main tourist center of Dagestan; rather, this primacy belongs to Derbent. Nevertheless, the city is a visited place for tourists as the main transport hub and a convenient starting point for trips to other resorts and attractions throughout the Republic. In Makhachkala there is a beach holiday, many accommodation options, well-developed urban infrastructure and transport.

We would not unequivocally recommend staying in Makhachkala for the entire duration of your holiday or trip around Dagestan, since objectively it is not a tourist city at all. There is no tourist area or pedestrian walking street, few sights, and nothing to do in the evenings. Yes, there is a walking area on Rasul Gamzatov Avenue, there is something like a waterfront on Rodopsky Boulevard, and many sites describe these places as tourist zones. You can indeed walk comfortably along them, but nothing interesting or touristy happens there. No street artists, musicians, painters or tour-seller barkers.

Usually one or two full days in Makhachkala will be enough to get to know the city and visit several city museums, sunbathe on the city beach and swim in the Caspian Sea, go on excursions or on your own transport to the nearest trio of "top" sights: Sulak Canyon, Sary-Kum dune, and Chirkey Reservoir. If you stay for another day or two, you can go to one of the city's cultural institutions, because there are several theaters here. But there is definitely nothing to do longer.

Since 2022, medical tourism has begun to develop in Makhachkala. You can come here to improve your health, as local clinics and staff are of a high level. And you can also come here for prevention and treatment at one of the sanatoriums:

Urban infrastructure in Makhachkala is well developed; it is a quite modern and safe city. There is inexpensive city public transport, taxi aggregators Yandex and the local Anzhi taxi app work. There are shopping centers, though not the most modern and not very spacious, but everything you might need can be bought here. Chain supermarkets "Magnit", "Zelenoye yabloko" operate, there is "Pyaterochka" and many local supermarkets. But the most interesting place for tourist shopping is the colorful, and one might even say exotic, Market No. 2 on Dzerzhinsky Street, 10/1 or Batyrya Street, 3.

There is an established prejudice that Dagestan is a dangerous region, and Makhachkala is a dangerous city. But in fact, it's quite the opposite, and you won't find it in the TOP of any of the ratings of crime-ridden cities in Russia. If Makhachkala does appear in crime reports, it is usually related to local officials due to cases of budget embezzlement and bribery, but this does not affect tourist life in any way. And therefore you can safely walk around Makhachkala at any time of day or night. Tourists are mostly welcome here, ready to help or just chat even without a reason. There are no strict religious rules and norms of behavior, as, for example, in neighboring Chechnya. You can calmly walk in shorts or a skirt, relax on the beach in a swimsuit. Although, of course, one should not forget about the appropriateness of a liberated appearance when visiting public places and religious institutions: walking on the city waterfront in a swimsuit or visiting a mosque in shorts is unacceptable, as, by the way, it should not be done at other Russian resorts either.

Is there a beach holiday in Makhachkala

Yes, there are beaches in Makhachkala, but we will categorically not call the city a full-fledged beach resort and recommend coming here for that. The fact is that the coastal waters of the Caspian Sea in Makhachkala are completely unsuitable for swimming, and all because of problems with the sewage system, or rather, their absence and neglect. City sewage enters the sea in large volumes, making the water unsuitable for swimming, which is manifested not only in its turbidity but also in poor sanitary condition. Rospotrebnadzor categorically does not recommend swimming in the water on the beaches of Makhachkala; signs prohibiting swimming are even installed here.

Where to eat in Makhachkala?

Here are cafes and restaurants in Makhachkala that tourists recommend:

  • Cafe Snezhana (Gamidova St., 21) – a budget establishment, perfect for a quick, inexpensive and tasty meal, portions are large. But if you need to sit and relax, enjoy the atmosphere, then this is not the place; it's specifically for eating.
  • Cafe Sachada (Irchi Kazaka St., 12) – a small cozy cafe with tasty homemade food. But very small, again only suitable for coming and eating, not for "hanging out".
  • Cafe Tower in the Mountains (Buynaksky St., 2) – a cafe with national cuisine, very conveniently located in the center near the waterfront and central park. What's good is that it's not fussy and quiet, no loud music that interferes with conversation.
  • Ethno Cafe Int (Irchi Kazaka St., 39) – a beautiful cozy cafe with ambiance and a very extensive menu from European to national cuisine. But it's located quite far from the center and tourist places, you'll have to go by taxi or car, and there is not much parking space nearby.
  • Cafe Gambit (General Omarov St., 127/1) – a very wide selection of dishes, there is European and national cuisine, Asian, rolls. Located on the outskirts of the city, but there is ordering and delivery.

If this list is not enough for you, then see the best cafes and restaurants of Makhachkala on Yandex Maps based on reviews from many thousands of users via this link.

Hotels and accommodation in Makhachkala, where to stay

There is no shortage of accommodation options in Makhachkala; several hundred hotels and guesthouses are represented in booking systems, and almost a thousand options for private rentals for tourists. Accommodation prices start from 3000 rubles for a double room in a hotel, and from 2000 rubles you can find rental accommodation.

However, do not be surprised if when trying to find and book you see much fewer options and higher prices. The fact is that during the high season in summer, prices increase, good options are quickly taken, and therefore it is better to book in advance. In general, in our opinion, Makhachkala cannot be called a budget place for tourists even compared to popular Russian beach resorts like Sochi, Anapa, Gelendzhik, etc. And about where (in which area) it is better to stay for a holiday in Makhachkala, we tell here.

For search and booking, we advise using these reliable Russian systems:

Weather and tourist seasons, when is the best time to go to Makhachkala

  • Summer

Since Makhachkala, in our opinion, is not yet a self-contained tourist or resort destination as such, then, obviously, the season for visiting the city is most often tied by travelers to a trip to Dagestan in general. And the best time for this, of course, is the summer months, as well as the first month of autumn. This is not only a great opportunity to travel around the entire region and get acquainted with all its sights at a comfortable temperature, but also the beach season on the coast. True, prices at this time are noticeably higher than at other times of the year.

  • Spring and autumn

But warm weather in Dagestan in general sets in earlier than summer, because this is the southernmost region of Russia, and therefore the most inquisitive and daring travelers can come here as early as April and until November. In these months, the weather is cool, but on the coast it is mostly above zero, and only in mountainous areas there are frosts, and snow lies.

  • Winter

You can go to Makhachkala in winter, but whether it's worth it, everyone must decide for themselves, taking into account the risks and limitations due to the weather. Winters here are significantly milder than in the rest of Russia, frosts are extremely rare, and permanent snow cover occurs only in high mountain areas. But the bad thing is that such weather greatly limits opportunities for trips around the region to distant sights and to the mountains. Yes, you will be able to visit, for example, Sulak Canyon or the Sarykum dune, go to Derbent or Izberbash, but forget about trips to the mountains to abandoned villages, waterfalls, or hiking with overnight stays in the mountains at this time. Or at least greatly limit them.

Transport in Makhachkala, how to get around

Makhachkala is not a small city; without transport, you will not be able to fully get acquainted with its sights and immerse yourself in the atmosphere. Moreover, it is not very well equipped for walking: sidewalks are not everywhere, and in some places you cannot walk the shortest route due to fences or construction sites. A more or less comfortable area for walking is the historical center near the port and the city beach, but only part of the city's sights are located there, and you will have to go to the rest. For getting around on holiday, you can use taxis, city public transport, bicycle and electric scooter rentals, your own car or car rental, including carsharing.

Taxi in Makhachkala
Taxi in Makhachkala

The most convenient way to get around Makhachkala for city guests is by taxi. Now aggregators YandexGo and Uber work here, as well as the app and website of the local taxi "Anzhi". The local "Anzhi" offers prices even slightly lower than global aggregators, although payment is accepted only in cash. In general, the appearance of apps has greatly reduced taxi prices, and now a short ride within the center will cost from 100 rubles, and you can ride almost across the whole city with no traffic jams for 200. From the airport and to the airport you can get for from 500 rubles.

City transport in Makhachkala is quite well developed, a ride costs only from 27 rubles. Payment in cash and on some routes by bank card with a discount of 2 rubles. Small city buses, five trolleybus routes, and countless private minibuses circulate around the city, which the city cannot get rid of, although plans to replace them with small city buses have been announced many times.

In the center of Makhachkala, per-minute rental of electric scooters and bicycles has now appeared. Currently (2023) the apps Urent and Moso operate. Activation cost from 25 rubles, and then from 5 rubles per minute for an electric scooter, and from 40 rubles for 30 minutes for a bicycle. There is also long-term bicycle rental for a day, but it is not widespread here; you will have to search well and possibly even use classifieds for this.

We do not recommend getting around Makhachkala in your own car. In our, perhaps subjective, opinion, drivers on the road here behave, to put it mildly, not very skillfully and aggressively. Frequent lane changes, sudden starts and stops at traffic lights are normal for locals. They will constantly try to overtake you, even if there is no need for it and there is a red traffic light ahead of you. Interestingly, such a driving style is found precisely in the city, and outside the city local drivers drive much more calmly and even in compliance with traffic rules.

But if you still really want to get around by car, then as an alternative to a personal car you can use carsharing services "Delimobile", BelkaCar, "YandexDrive" and YouCar. Then, at least, there will be fewer problems with parking, because carsharing services have their own free parking points.

For daily rental, it's better for now to use independent search via the internet for local rental companies, rather than search aggregators for car rentals. For some reason, in Makhachkala, when booking directly, prices are lower than through aggregators. For example, you can rent a Russian car from a local car rental for 1500 rubles/day, while through search engines the price starts from 2000. In general, GoogleYandex is your friend. But if you still prefer reliable trusted methods, then here are popular car rental search engine sites:

Sights in Makhachkala and what to see?

To speak objectively, Makhachkala is by no means a place to go to get acquainted with the city's sights. Unfortunately, the city is relatively young, its history begins with the construction of the Petrovskaya Fortress in 1844, and therefore there are very few historical places here. And even what used to be a fortress has not been preserved at all, and only one historical place remains – the Petrovsky Lighthouse. And even that can only be seen partially from the side, and nothing more. Of interest to tourists in Makhachkala, there are several museums worth visiting, the largest mosque in Russia, an old Orthodox cathedral.

At the same time, Makhachkala is a convenient starting point for getting acquainted with other sights of Dagestan. Among the mandatory to visit trio of top places near Makhachkala: Sulak Canyon, Sary-Kum dune and Chirkey Reservoir. All of them can be visited within one day with an excursion or independently by car. Also, in one day with an excursion, by private transport or even by bus, you can go to the oldest city in Russia, Derbent. Although, of course, it's better to go there for a couple of days, because there is a lot to see.

In addition, one- and multi-day excursions to other amazing sights of Dagestan depart from Makhachkala, such as the ghost village of Gamsutl, Saltinsky Waterfall, to Khunzakh, Gunib, Kakhib and Goor, and even to the neighboring region of Chechnya. In general, it can be said that from here you can visit all the interesting places of Dagestan on excursions, well, or almost all.

Where to buy tours in Makhachkala?

Since there is no tourist center as such in Makhachkala, where tour distributors work at every step, it is better to look for tour packages through the internet. You can find websites of local travel agencies or private guides, or use specialized search sites, and safely book excursions for your desired destinations, prices, and review ratings:

And separately we'll tell about entertainment in Makhachkala. For the most part, there are no tourist entertainments here, but there is a city beach and something like a walking waterfront on Rodopsky Boulevard. You can also go to the neighboring city of Kaspiysk, where there is one large water park "Akvalend", and next to it another inexpensive small one. Also, near Lake Ak-Gel there is an amusement park, but it will only surprise the most unassuming vacationers and kids; the attractions there are very simple.

Also in Makhachkala during your holiday you can visit cultural events at:

A special "tourist entertainment" worth mentioning is the local cuisine. In Makhachkala, you will find many cafes preparing traditional Caucasian and Dagestani cuisine, and this must be tried. Moreover, the tastiest dishes you will get are not in the trendy expensive establishments in the center, but in small establishments for locals and in street fast food. And be sure to visit one of the local coffee shops.
