What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting
Tobot Waterfall is sometimes called Khunzakh Waterfall because of its location near the village of Khunzakh. This is one of the most famous and frequently visited waterfalls in Dagestan, along with Khanagsky and Saltinsky waterfalls, and it is also one of the most easily accessible.
The village of Khunzakh, in which the waterfall is located, is located on a high plateau at an altitude of about 1600 meters. Here the Tobot River falls to the bottom of the Tsolotlinsky canyon (Tsolotl), forming one powerful jet with a height of about 70 meters, which is as much as 25 floors. In general, estimates of the height of the waterfall are very different, from 50 to 100 meters, and depend on the starting points for measurement. The views of the waterfall and the canyon are very beautiful, you can watch it from several points. In addition, it is within walking distance of another local landmark - Hunzakh fortress. And just a couple of hundred meters from the observation deck on Hunzy there is another less well-known, but also beautiful Itlyatlyar waterfall, formed by the waters of the tributary of the Tobot River. For fans of extreme sports in good weather, you can bungee jump over Tobot Waterfall (on March 21, 2023, an accident occurred there due to non-compliance with safety regulations, so perhaps this active entertainment is closed)
The waterfall becomes full of water in spring and summer during the melting period and during the rains, and in winter it freezes and turns into a large icicle. In summer, you can see a rainbow near the waterfall.
The roads through the village of Khunzakh and to the lookouts at the waterfalls are unpaved and during the rains they are greatly eroded, but, however, there is very little to go from the asphalt. At the same time, the waterfall itself can be classified as dangerous, since fences along the cliff are not everywhere, and in places you can drive up close to the cliff by car. After the tragedy in the summer of 2022, when a car with a family of 4 people fell into the abyss near the Tobot Waterfall, part of the territory was fenced with a fence of cables. But the safety rules in the canyon area should not be neglected.
🕐 Working hours
Around the clock, it is better to visit in spring during the melting of snow or in summer during rains, and the rest of the time it may be low-water.
💵 Entrance fee / ticket price
Since 2023, a fee has been introduced for visiting the Khunzakh Nature Park: adults - 100 rubles; children of school and preschool age, preferential categories - free of charge. In practice, the waterfall can still be viewed for free.
🚶 How to get there
Tobot Waterfall is located near the village of Khunzakh, 190 kilometers from Derbent and 152 from Makhachkala. You can look at it from one of several viewing rooms, here are the most popular and convenient:
- Tobot observation deck on the map
- Observation deck at the same time on Tobot and Itlyatlyar on the map
There is a good asphalt road leading to the village, but the last few hundred meters to these lookouts you will have to drive along a dirt road. But, as we wrote above, it's better to park a little to the side and walk a little, because the unpaved parking lot is too close to the edge of the canyon and is dangerous.
An alternative to an independent visit to the waterfall and nearby attractions can be an excursion. Such one-day tours are offered from Makhachkala, Derbent and Izberbash, the cost starts from 3500 rubles/person, you can buy them online at Sputnik8.com or Tripster.ru.
