What to Expect and Is It Worth Visiting

The Armenian Church of St. Gregory in the village of Nyugdi is a monument of cultural heritage of federal heritage. At the time of our visit in 2022, the doors were closed, the windows were partially boarded up, and the glass in them was broken. Officially, this monument has been under restoration for several years, and therefore it can only be viewed from the outside.

The exact year of the appearance of the first chapel here is unknown, but the first mentions are found in 1850. And the building that you will see today was built to replace the old chapel in 1916. An inscription in Armenian was placed above one of the entrances to the church, which reads: "The temple was built on the site of the martyrdom of St. Gregory, the grandson of our father Gregory the Illuminator at the expense of the brothers Vanetsyants, Grigor and Lazar Petrosovich, in the year of the Lord 1916." And already in modern times a stone from the old chapel with the inscription: "I, Mrs. Elizabeth Kochkachyants, restored the church in memory of myself and my family. Lord, remember us when the words are finished and the deed will reign. 1879". In Soviet times, the church was closed, but in 1960 it was recognized as a monument of urban planning and architecture.
