During our trip to Dagestan, we "discovered" a very picturesque automobile route through the mountainous part of the Republic, which is not on tourist maps. It will offer you magnificent views of the Dagestan mountains and emerald hills, you will see Dagestan pyramids, you will drive through half-abandoned old villages.
Officially, there is no such tourist route, but if you like little-traveled hiking trails, you will definitely like it. However, there is one feature: to see it, you need a car, and preferably off-road, and driving experience on mountain dirt roads will not hurt at all.
So, our picturesque car route starts from the famous village of artisans Kubachi, where usually most travelers turn around and take a good road back to the coast. By the way, you will also have to drive a little along the dirt road to Kubachi, we have already told you in detail about how to get to Kubachi here.
We advise you not to turn around, but to go further along the road through the villages of Urkhnishcha, Urari, Gulebki, Tanta, Gapshima and Akusha, after which you will again get to the asphalt. This road is 60 kilometers long. Alternatively, you can turn left in the village of Gapshima and drive through another interesting village of pottery artisans Balkhar, but then you will have to drive 70 kilometers. When you get to the asphalt, you can go further to Gunib, Hunzah or go back to the coast.
The road here is almost completely unpaved, only in places at the entrance to Akushe or after Balkhar there will be remnants of asphalt in places. You will have to drive slowly and very carefully, especially in wet weather. The road will go through beautiful green hills (these are clay slippery areas), then along steep cliffs with the likelihood of rockfalls (gravel areas). To drive these 60 or 70 kilometers, it will take you 4-6. At least, that's what we did. It can be faster if you do not spare your car. In any case, we advise you to start driving it in the morning, for which you will have to spend the night in Kubachi and leave in the morning. Or alternatively, you can go here at any time with a tent and spend the night somewhere along the way, because the places here are quiet and very calm.
Although we recommend driving this route by SUV, in fact, you can drive it in any passenger car in dry weather. However, before traveling, we strongly advise you to check the weather forecast, because any rain can stop your trip, and you will simply get stuck in the mountains. Cars go here extremely rarely, so in the event of such an emergency, help may have to wait several hours, or even a whole day.
