Dagestan pyramids (or Dagestan terraces) is an amazing creation of human hands and one of the most picturesque sights. They are multi-tiered fields built on hills for growing agricultural products. It is not known exactly when they appeared here, but it is believed that Dagestan was one of the most ancient centers of terrace technologies that spread around the world.

Steps created on high hills leading up, they resemble pyramids. There are terraces and more gently sloping, with only a few steps-stairs. The beautiful and picturesque panoramas of the Dagestan pyramids, covered with green grass, can be compared with the rice terraces of Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and others.

The need to create such fields for cultivation was justified by the peculiarity of the mountainous terrain and the lack of areas for the development of agriculture. Hence, terrace farming appeared. During the Soviet period, it was especially widespread in Dagestan. Garden trees, cereals and vegetable crops were grown in this way. Today it is not used, but the terraces themselves have remained, and it is still possible to observe this miracle.

🚶 How to get there

There are several places where you can see Dagestan terraces in the Republic of Dagestan. Here are the most easily accessible:

  • In the area of Kubachi villages, access to them by dirt road (terraces on the map).
  • Near the village of Chokh, perfectly visible from the asphalt road (terraces on the map).
  • In the village of Silta, not far from the Salta underground waterfall, from the prakovka waterfall you can walk to the observation deck, from where they are slightly visible (terraces on the map).
  • There are many terraces in the vicinity of the village of Itsari, but it is quite far from popular tourist routes, you can only get there by a dirt road (terraces on the map).

Most of these pyramids or terraces can only be reached by yourself or with tour guides on an individual route, you can use the coordinates from our map for this. The terraces next to The Saltinsky waterfall can be seen during group excursions, if you have enough time for this, and the terraces next to the village Choh can be seen from the transport window on the way to the ghost village of Gamsutl.

Местами очень красиво, но народу всегда много, как и пишут в отзывах. 😅 Пришлось постоять в очереди на фото у главной достопримечательности, хотя виды того стоили. Советую приезжать рано утром, чтобы избежать толп.
