Holidays in Kislovodsk: why go, pros and cons (personal experience)
Kislovodsk is a resort city in southern Russia, in Stavropol Krai, one of the resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters (CMW). It sits at an average altitude of 800 meters above sea level, 217 km from Stavropol and 1560 kilometers from Moscow (Kislovodsk on the map). The city's population is less than 130,000 people.
Kislovodsk is a balneological and climatic health resort, the most popular and developed among the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts. Treatment here uses Narzan mineral water, therapeutic mud, clean mountain air, and a mild climate.
Organized treatment under professional supervision is available at local sanatoriums and health resorts, where it's best to go with a voucher from a trade union or institutional organization. Such vouchers are inexpensive because the organization covers most of the cost. Booking sanatorium accommodation on your own, however, is quite expensive — it's cheaper to buy a ready-made tour or just rent a regular hotel or apartment.
But Kislovodsk isn't just about staying in sanatoriums for treatment. Every year, tens of thousands of independent travelers visit the resort, choosing this place to explore the sights and nature of the mountainous region, pay for therapeutic or cosmetic procedures, and generally get to know the area. In our opinion (the site authors), if you're choosing a place to get acquainted with the CMW resorts for the first time, Kislovodsk is the best choice.
✔ Pros of a holiday in Kislovodsk

- There's a pedestrian tourist street, tourist infrastructure is fairly well developed
- One of the most developed CMW resorts, there's always something happening and it's lively
- Quite a few sights and interesting places, lots of tours to other resorts across southern Russia
- You can get to Kislovodsk directly by train
❌ Cons of a holiday in Kislovodsk
- Expensive hotel and accommodation rates, few budget options
- Outside the resort area, there's nothing touristy at all
- In peak season (July-August) it's very crowded, especially on Kurortny Boulevard

Kislovodsk infrastructure: where to eat, buy souvenirs, and book tours
Resort Kislovodsk lives for tourists. Everything here is geared toward relaxation: from a morning glass of narzan to evening strolls along the illuminated boulevard. In this section — an honest breakdown of what really works: where to eat tasty and inexpensive food (spoiler: a bunch of donuts for 60 RUB), where to buy the most interesting souvenirs, and how to book tours without getting ripped off.
Tourist and city infrastructure, shopping
Tourist infrastructure in Kislovodsk is very well developed, but this primarily applies to the tourist district, especially the pedestrian Kurortny Boulevard and its surroundings. Beyond that, everything changes dramatically, and there's no trace of anything touristy.
In the resort area, tours, entertainment, and other tourist services are offered on every corner. Many cafes and restaurants, markets and shops with vacation goods and souvenirs, stores and boutiques are open. Even if you come here for a vacation on your own, rather than on a sanatorium referral, you can get cosmetic or medical procedures for a fee: spas, massages, mud therapy, mineral baths, and much more are available.
Tour services are very well developed here, and you can buy them at street travel agencies or from vendors on the street. It's all safe, and cases of fraud are practically nonexistent. There are especially many tour sales kiosks near the Colonnade: you can go there, and they'll tell you everything and show you beautiful photos from the tours — all you have to do is choose. If you're not ready to decide right away, you can take brochures with descriptions and prices, compare everything, and then book (even by phone). Just keep in mind that tours to some destinations don't run every day, so if you have a short vacation, we recommend planning and booking in the first few days so you don't miss the best stuff.
Finally, you can read reviews and book tours on aggregator sites — that's also reliable and convenient:

Where to eat in Kislovodsk
If you're staying at a sanatorium on a treatment voucher, full board is already included. They'll feed you kefir, porridge, salads — all sorts of healthy food. If you're booking a hotel or guesthouse on your own, meals are optional for an extra charge, and not everywhere — and it's usually just breakfast.
But finding food outside the hotel is no problem at all, especially in the tourist district. On Kurortny Boulevard and nearby, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants with a wide variety of cuisines. There's Georgian, Italian, Thai, and more. But of course, Russian and Caucasian food dominate. A dinner check will be from about 500 RUB, and you can have breakfast for even 200 RUB. But this all heavily depends on the level of the establishment and your appetite — these are minimum prices.
We won't recommend any specific places, since everyone's tastes are different. But we can suggest open Yandex Maps using this link, and you'll see a selection of places with the highest ratings and plenty of reviews, making it easy to find places to your taste and budget.
But we will note one special place from personal experience. Be sure to stop by the donut shop "Donuts No. 1" or "Sneginka" and the shopping center of the same name at the end of Kurortny Boulevard (this isn't an ad, just a tip). This place operates as a fast-food restaurant, and they primarily serve donuts. There are always long lines because it's tasty, and you can eat here for even 100 RUB (3 donuts for 60). It's not a given that sweet donuts and the cafeteria-like atmosphere will appeal to absolutely everyone, but it's definitely worth coming by and "checking in." And if you don't want to wait in line, there's another place nearby called "Kislovodsk Donuts," where there's no such hype, and the donuts are just as tasty.
Finally, if you decide to rent an apartment for your vacation, you can cook for yourself. Usually, the rented apartments and rooms are fully equipped, even with kitchen utensils. We've even stayed in apartments where caring hosts leave oil, salt, sugar, coffee, tea, and cookies in the kitchen. So by buying groceries at local supermarkets, you can cook everything without any problems.
For groceries, you can head to chain supermarkets. Not far from the Colonnade at 14 Mira Avenue, there's the only chain supermarket in the tourist district, "Magnit," and a "Pyaterochka" next to it. Another "Magnit" is right on Kurortny Boulevard. They have a large selection of groceries and ready-made meals, but they don't sell alcohol at all. Alcoholic drinks and draft beer can be bought at one of the many small non-chain grocery stores.
If you stay outside the resort area in the residential zone to the north — and that's where apartments are mostly rented to vacationers — you won't have any trouble finding a grocery store. There are many different chain Pyaterochkas, Magnits, and everything else there. Food prices are practically no different from the rest of the country.
Hotels and accommodation in Kislovodsk: where to stay
Kislovodsk is the most popular resort in the Caucasian Mineral Waters. Finding accommodation isn't a problem, but in high season (June–September), the best options get snapped up a month or two in advance. The main rule when choosing a neighborhood is proximity to the narzan fountains and the National Park — after all, that's why people come here. We'll tell you which neighborhoods work for tourists, how much accommodation costs in season, and where to look for it. And if you want more detail, we have a separate guide: Where to stay in Kislovodsk: neighborhoods, prices, hotels or apartments
Where to stay in Kislovodsk: hotels, apartments, and prices
- Hostel bed — from 800 RUB.
- Room/apartment in the private sector (bathroom may be outside) — from 1500–2000 RUB.
- Separate apartment for 2–4 people — from 2500 RUB.
- 2-3* hotel room for two — from 3000 RUB.
- Sanatorium room with treatment — from 4000 RUB.
These prices apply when booking in advance, at least a few weeks before your trip. If you look for accommodation at the last minute, the budget options will already be gone.
Life hack for the super thrifty! You can camp with a tent in the outskirts of Kislovodsk. One popular spot is Birch Gully (Berezovaya Balka). It's peaceful, scenic, and you can drive right up. You can even walk to the center from there (about 30–40 minutes). Free, fresh air, with natural springs nearby.

Which neighborhood in Kislovodsk to choose for your stay
Kislovodsk is elongated — nearly 8 kilometers from south to north. Not all neighborhoods are equally convenient for tourists. In our experience, if it's your first time and you're coming for 3–5 days — book accommodation ONLY in the Resort area or near the Train Station square. Saving 500–1000 RUB per night on a distant neighborhood isn't worth the time spent commuting. If you're staying for 2+ weeks or have a car — you can consider the northern areas to save money.
| Neighborhood | Pros | Cons | Distance to park/fountains | Prices (summer, per day) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resort area (heart of the city) | Everything is close: park, fountains, cafes, tours. You can forget about transport. | Highest prices, noisy in the evenings, parking is difficult. | 5-15 min walk | from 3000 RUB (hotel) from 2500 RUB (apartment) |
| Train station + Lenin Alley | Beautiful historic architecture, quieter than the resort area, lower prices. New pedestrian alley with fountains. | Noticeably less tourist infrastructure "at your doorstep." Slightly farther from the park. | 10-20 min walk (750 m to the Colonnade) | from 2500 RUB (hotel) from 2000 RUB (apartment) |
| City residential area (north) | Noticeably lower prices, for the same money — a spacious apartment with excellent renovation. Very quiet. | 2-5 km from the park, inconvenient without transport. No resort atmosphere, just residential development around. | By car 5-15 min, on foot 30-60 min | from 1500 RUB (room) from 2000 RUB (apartment) |
If you're planning a trip by car and want to save money, you can consider the suburbs (Alikonovka, Belorechensky, Industriya). But be prepared that every trip into the city is an ordeal, and there's practically no tourist infrastructure there.

When to go to Kislovodsk: choosing the tourist season
Kislovodsk is a year-round resort, but your experience depends heavily on the season you choose. Thanks to its altitude of about 800 meters above sea level, there's no stifling heat like on the plains, and winters are milder than in most of Russia. Still, each season has its pros and cons for tourists:
- ❄ Winter (December-February). Winter in Kislovodsk is a time for calm, relaxed vacations. Severe frosts are rare: daytime temperatures range from 0°C to +3°C, dropping to -5°C…-8°C at night. Snow falls but melts quickly. This isn't the best season for long mountain hikes — trails can be slippery, and tours to canyons are often canceled. But the city and park are very beautiful, there are fewer tourists, accommodation prices are lower, and the air is especially clean and good for your lungs.
- 🌴 Spring (March-May). Spring is a season of contrasts. Freezes are still possible in March, but the sun starts to warm up. Everything blooms in April, and May is one of the most picturesque months. However, May is also the rainiest: long downpours and thunderstorms are frequent. Daytime temperatures rise from +5°C in March to +18…+22°C in May. Great for walks in Kurortny Park and treatment, but still early for high-mountain hikes — there may still be snow in the canyons, and roads get washed out.
- ☀ Summer (June-August). This is the high tourist season. Daytime +24…+28°C, but the dry air makes the heat easy to bear. Nights are cool — around +12…+15°C, which is ideal for sleeping. June is the rainiest summer month, while July and August are sunny and stable. All tour routes are operating: you can go to the mountains of Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, to waterfalls and canyons. The best time for active tourism and treatment on the open verandas of sanatoriums.
- 🍂 Fall (September-November). The shoulder season — the best for most tourists. September and October are warm (+18…+23°C during the day), with bright foliage and no rain. November gets cooler (+5…+10°C), with possible overnight frosts. September is ideal for hiking and tours. October is still comfortable for walking in the park and treatment. In November, there are few tourists, prices are low, but many cable cars and seasonal cafes are already closed.

How to get from Mineralnye Vody airport to Kislovodsk
A taxi booked through an app (Yandex Go) costs from 1500 RUB. A more comfortable option is to book a transfer with a meet-and-greet at the exit:
Budget option: minibus #11 to Mineralnye Vody train station (50 RUB), then a local train to Kislovodsk (from 335 RUB, 1.5 hours). Trains run from 04:50 to 20:50 every 30-60 minutes. Check the current schedule on Tutu.ru.
Most buses from the airport arrive at Kislovodsk bus station (4 Promyshlennaya St.) — that's on the outskirts, 6 km from the center. From there you'll need to take a taxi (from 200 RUB) or city buses #12, 14, 19 (35 RUB).
Train: direct to Kislovodsk or via Mineralnye Vody
Kislovodsk train station is in the city center, from where you can walk to most hotels or take a taxi from 80 RUB. Direct trains run from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Adler, Yekaterinburg, and other cities. If there's no direct train from your city, buy a ticket to Mineralnye Vody, and then take a local train (from 335 RUB) or taxi. Check schedules and buy tickets on Tutu.ru or the official Russian Railways website.
From neighboring CMW resorts: Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki, Zheleznovodsk
The most convenient way is by local train — it arrives in the center of Kislovodsk. Here are the main fares:
| Departure point | Cost | Travel time | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mineralnye Vody | from 335 RUB | 1 hour 30 min | every 30-60 min (04:50-20:50) |
| Yessentuki | from 110 RUB | 30 min | about every hour |
| Pyatigorsk | from 200 RUB | 50 min | about every hour |
Check the current local train schedule on Tutu.ru. If you decide to take a bus, keep in mind: buses arrive at the bus station on the outskirts, from where you'll need to get to the center separately.
If you plan to actively travel around the Caucasian Mineral Waters and the nearby mountains (Arkhyz, Dombay, Elbrus), it's convenient to rent a car right at Mineralnye Vody airport. Compare prices and book a car in advance through rental services — links are available in our detailed guide.
Transport in Kislovodsk: how to get around conveniently and cheaply
Kislovodsk is a compact resort where most attractions are within walking distance. But sometimes you can't do without transport: getting to the bus station, going to the Valley of Roses, or saving time. In our experience, the easiest way is to use taxis or buses, and it's better not to drive your own car in the center — there's no parking, and tow trucks are very active. Here's a quick overview of the main transportation options. For more details, check out our full guide: "Transport in Kislovodsk: complete guide for tourists".
Buses: 35 RUB and contactless payment
A ride on city buses and minibuses costs 35 RUB. You can pay with cash or a bank card — almost everywhere has contactless payment terminals. Several routes are useful for tourists:
- #1, 12, 14, 22, 23, 24 — from the center (Kurortny Boulevard, train station) to the bus station (4 Promyshlennaya St.).
- #8 and #27 — from the center to the Valley of Roses and the lower cable car station.
- #18 — runs along Pervomaysky Avenue and Mira Avenue, convenient for short trips in the tourist zone.
The easiest way to check schedules and real-time bus movements is through Yandex Maps or 2GIS. Switch to "public transport" mode, and the map will show you the optimal route, stops, and intervals.
Taxis: from 100 RUB per trip around the center
The most convenient and inexpensive option for tourists. Book through mobile apps (Yandex Go, Uber Russia) — the price is shown upfront, and the car arrives in 5-10 minutes. Hailing a taxi on the street is more expensive and less predictable.
| Route | Approximate cost | Travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Around the tourist center (short trip) | from 100 RUB | 5-10 minutes |
| Train station → Kurortny Boulevard (center) | 80-120 RUB | 5 minutes |
| Bus station → city center | 300-350 RUB | 15-20 minutes |
| Kislovodsk → Mineralnye Vody airport | from 1500 RUB | 50-60 minutes |
In the evening, at night, or in the rain, prices may be 30-50% higher. For trips to the airport, it's convenient to book a transfer in advance through Kiwitaxi or Intui.
Bikes and scooters: from 250 RUB per hour
Rental points are located on Kurortny Boulevard and near the Colonnade. Prices:
- Bicycle — from 250 RUB/hour, 700 RUB/day.
- Electric scooter — from 300 RUB/hour, 1000 RUB/day.
Scooter-sharing services also operate (e.g., Whoosh): start 30-50 RUB, per minute — 5-7 RUB. Riding scooters is restricted in pedestrian zones — the app will show permitted routes.
Your own car: better to leave it at the hotel parking lot
We don't recommend driving around the city: there are many "No Stopping" signs in the center, tow trucks are very active, and there are few paid parking lots (about 50 RUB/hour) and they're always full. But a car is very useful for trips around the area — to Medovye Waterfalls, Lake Tambukan, Ring Mountain, and other places.
Sights, what to see
Kislovodsk has many sights and tours to add variety to your vacation or sanatorium treatment, even if it lasts several weeks. Just visiting all the places within the resort zone will take at least 3 days, and there are also worthwhile sights near Kislovodsk and in neighboring CMW resorts. First and foremost, here's what to see:
Once you've seen everything in the city and nearby, you can visit neighboring CMW resorts — sights of Pyatigorsk, sights of Yessentuki, sights of Zheleznovodsk — on your own by bus or local train, or with a tour. There's also a wide variety of tours to neighboring regions, and even to Georgia. Popular trips from Kislovodsk go to Dombay or Arkhyz, to the Elbrus region, Grozny, and much more. The easiest way to book tours is from vendors on pedestrian Kurortny Boulevard, especially near the Colonnade. You can get descriptions and price lists, then book on the spot or by phone. You can also book online on these reliable review sites:
- 📷 Tours in Kislovodsk from tour operator TEZ Tour
- 📷 Tours in Kislovodsk on Tripster.ru
- 📷 Tours in Kislovodsk on Sputnik8.com
Kislovodsk also has several tourist attractions. You can go with a tour or on your own to a horse farm for riding, visit a dolphinarium, Suvorov hot springs (far away, only with a tour), a trout farm. And if your budget allows, you can even fly in a light aircraft, paraglider, hang glider, or glider at the "+5" aero club. There are also activities specifically for children: an exotic animal exhibit, an ostrich farm, a circus, a wax museum, and children's amusement parks. Speaking of amusement parks, there are several here: one permanent at 3 Vokzalnaya St., and several temporary ones that only operate in high season. The permanent city amusement park is old, with old rides, so don't expect anything special.
As for evening entertainment, objectively there's almost none. There isn't a single nightclub in the resort zone, only a few so-called bars and beer joints. More details on all the sights of Kislovodsk.
