Greetings to all independent travelers and tourists! We've visited all the resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters, and not just once. Today we want to share with you a detailed comparison of two gems of this region – Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk. Both cities are part of the CMW, but offer completely different vacation experiences. Let's figure out which one is right for you.
The short answer is this:
- Pyatigorsk – for lovers of history, packed sightseeing, and budget travel
- Kislovodsk – for those who appreciate comfort, perfect infrastructure, and peaceful medical relaxation
General Comparison: Atmosphere and Purpose
Pyatigorsk is the largest city in the CMW, with a population of about 150,000 people. When we walked around here, we felt the spirit of a real city with a rich history, not just a resort. The legacy of Lermontov is strongly felt here; there's something mystical about these places. The city lives its own life, not focused solely on tourists.
Honestly, after visiting other CMW resorts, we noticed that Pyatigorsk lags a bit in terms of landscaping. The central Tsvetnik Park is well-maintained, but step aside, and you see broken sidewalks and untidy areas.
Kislovodsk, on the other hand, is the quintessential resort. Everything here is dedicated to one purpose – relaxation and treatment. The atmosphere reminds one of European spa towns: well-kept parks, pedestrian zones, a resort boulevard. The population is about 130,000, but you feel that the city exists for its guests.
After Pyatigorsk, you're simply amazed by the cleanliness and order here – the authorities truly care about the resort, and it shows in every detail.
Treatment and Mineral Waters
-
Pyatigorsk: Diversity of Springs
Drinking spring in Pyatigorsk
Lake Tambukan Pyatigorsk is famous for its diversity – there are over 40 springs with different mineral waters. A special feature is the presence of radon springs. We tried water from different springs – each with its unique taste and properties.
What we particularly liked is that there are free "folk" springs like the Shameless Baths, where you can take a mineral bath completely free of charge, though without much comfort.
-
Kislovodsk: The Kingdom of Narzan
Narzan Gallery Kislovodsk is primarily about narzan. The famous mineral water is everywhere here. The Narzan Gallery is a true temple of water, where you can try narzan at different temperatures and concentrations.
The climate here is milder, the air is cleaner due to the higher altitude (800 meters versus 500 in Pyatigorsk). For people with cardiovascular diseases, Kislovodsk is often recommended as a more suitable option.
Attractions and Excursions
-
Pyatigorsk: The Historical Center of the CMW
Tsvetnik Park
Cable car Pyatigorsk is the leader in terms of the number and variety of attractions:
- Mount Mashuk with a cable car and observation platforms
- Proval Lake – the one from "The Twelve Chairs"
- Tsvetnik Park and the Lermontov Gallery
- Places associated with Lermontov and his duel
- Mount Beshtau for trekking enthusiasts
We spent a week in Pyatigorsk and discovered something new every day. The city is ideal for history lovers and walking enthusiasts.
-
Kislovodsk: Nature and Parks
Kislovodsk Park
Valley of Roses Kislovodsk captivates with its nature and attractions:
- Kislovodsk National Park – one of the largest in Europe
- The Colonnade and the resort boulevard
- Valley of Roses
- Medovye Waterfalls in the vicinity
- Cable car
There are fewer historical buildings here, but more natural beauty. The park is so huge that you can walk for days on different routes.
But it's worth noting that your trip shouldn't be limited to just exploring the city's attractions. Both resorts serve as excellent starting points for exploring the entire North Caucasus. From here, you can go to the foot of majestic Elbrus and even walk on snow in the middle of summer, take an excursion to modern Grozny, see the stunningly beautiful mountain regions of Dagestan, or visit mysterious Ossetia. And these are far from all the options!
What is especially convenient is that excursion programs are offered equally in both Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk. We saw the same offers from vendors in Tsvetnik Park in Pyatigorsk and on the resort boulevard in Kislovodsk. Prices and programs are practically the same, so there really is no clear leader in this matter.
Infrastructure and Transport
Pyatigorsk is a large city with developed urban infrastructure. It has a public transport system, large shopping centers, shops, and markets. But honestly, in our personal opinion, it is currently one of the lagging resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters in terms of cleanliness and street landscaping outside the tourist center.
Kislovodsk wins in this regard – tourist infrastructure is very well developed here, especially in the tourist area around the pedestrian Kurortny Boulevard. Here, on every corner, they offer excursions, entertainment, and other tourist services.
Accommodation and Prices
-
Pyatigorsk: Affordable Prices
It's easier to find budget accommodation here. Based on our observations:
- Hostel from 800 rubles per person, but the number of options is very limited
- Guest houses, private apartments, and flats from 1500 rubles for two
- Hotels from 3000 rubles for two
For independent booking of accommodation in Pyatigorsk, it's better to use trusted sites:
-
Kislovodsk: Comfort for Money
Prices are slightly higher, but you can find better quality accommodation. For example, at the height of the season, you can rent a private apartment from 2000 rubles for two, or a room in a guest house or hotel from 3500 rubles.
For booking in Kislovodsk:
How to Get There
Both cities are well connected to the transport hub – Mineralnye Vody. You can get to Pyatigorsk directly by train, and direct trains also go to Kislovodsk. It's convenient to travel between the cities on "Lastochka" electric trains (only 30 minutes) or by bus.
Our Recommendations
-
✔ Choose Pyatigorsk if:
- You are a lover of history and literature (Lermontov-related places)
- You want to save on accommodation
- You appreciate authenticity and aren't afraid of some neglect
- Diversity of mineral waters is important to you
- You are an active tourist ready to explore the surroundings
-
✔ Choose Kislovodsk if:
- You appreciate comfort and tidiness
- You have cardiovascular diseases
- You love quiet walks in parks
- You are traveling with children
- You are coming specifically for treatment with narzan
Personally, we love both cities, but for different reasons. Pyatigorsk for its rich history and character, Kislovodsk for its impeccable resort comfort. If you're visiting the CMW for the first time – start with Kislovodsk, and take a trip to Pyatigorsk on an excursion. If you've already been to the region – choose based on your current preferences.
In any case, both resorts are worthy of attention and offer a unique experience of treatment and relaxation at the famous Caucasian Mineral Waters!
P.S. Don't forget to try the local narzan in each city – you'll taste the difference!
