Zheleznovodsk (Zheleznovodsk) - a resort town in the south of Russia in the Stavropol Territory, part of the resort region of Caucasian mineral waters. It is located at altitudes from 470 to 650 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Zheleznaya, 190 kilometers from Stavropol and 20 kilometers from the main transport hub of the resort – the city of Mineralnye Vody (Zheleznovodsk on the map of the region. Population-less than 25 thousand people.
Zheleznovodsk is a medical balneological resort. Actually, thanks to the discovery of two mineral springs on the slopes of Zheleznaya mountain in 1810, today's city grew up. However, although this is not a young resort, by modern standards it is still developing. Unfortunately, he barely survived the crisis of transition from the USSR to Russia, and began to recover only at the turn of the two thousandth years, so do not expect too much from the city. There is no developed tourist infrastructure, entertainment, cafes and restaurants, and in general the feeling of a clean and well-groomed resort. In our opinion, of all the urban resorts of the CMS, it is the least developed and will be of little interest to tourists and travelers.
But on the other hand, due to the presence of unique mineral springs for the whole of Russia, the purity of air, water and soil, and a very calm atmosphere, Zheleznovodsk is definitely one of the best places for spa treatment. In local sanatoriums, diseases of the digestive system, kidneys, urinary tract, metabolic disorders are treated. You can come here on your own, settling in one of the hotels or in the private sector, and use the mineral water sources completely free of charge.
Most of the vacationers here are elderly people and employees of enterprises who correct their health at the expense of trade union vouchers or at the expense of enterprises. We would not recommend going here for young travelers and tourists, or for family holidays.
Resort infrastructure
Zheleznovodsk was originally formed as a resort, so part of the city is a tourist zone with sanatoriums, or, in other words, a resort area. The resort area of Zheleznovodsk is located on the southern slope and at the foot of Mount Zheleznaya, stretched for about 2 kilometers (tourist area on the map. Accommodation in Zheleznovodsk is mainly represented by sanatoriums and hospitals of Soviet construction, including departmental (sanatorium of the Ministry of internal affairs, for example) and sanatoriums of enterprises, where they are sent only on vouchers. The place of accommodation is best to choose in a tourist area, but in case of lack of free places in it, you can choose accommodation in a new residential area, especially since the prices there are lower.

How to get to Zheleznovodsk
Zheleznovodsk is located 20 kilometers from the main transport hub of the Caucasian mineral waters (KMV), the city of Mineralnye Vody, where the airport and the railway station of long-distance trains are located. It is through Mineralnye Vody that it is best to get to Zheleznovodsk by plane or train, and from there to get to the city by taxi or inexpensive local public transport. You can get directly to Zheleznovodsk only by bus or car, since the existing railway station in the city does not work, even electric trains do not go to it. Transport, how to move around the city
The city has a system of city and suburban buses (taxis). To move around the tourist area, you will not need them, but if you need to get to a new residential area or to neighboring resorts, they will be very useful. All city buses pass along Lenin Street, and suburban buses depart/arrive from the bus station opposite the railway station, and again go along this street, where they can also be boarded. Travel around the city costs 15 rubles.

Sights of Zheleznovodsk, what to see
In Zheleznovodsk there are no prominent historical, cultural or natural attractions for which it is worth going here specifically. But if you are here on vacation or treatment, there are plenty of places that will help diversify your stay. The most important attraction and place where guests of the city spend most of their time is the resort park, decorated with statues and fountains, and in it there are Pump Rooms of mineral healing water, etc. From the park originate three routes of therapeutic trails-terrenkur, which lead to the top of Mount Zheleznaya, and to two caves. In the resort area there are two museums and several architectural monuments.
When you get acquainted with all the sights of the city, you can go on excursions. Group excursions are sold in hotels and sanatoriums, and at distributors on the streets, mainly in the resort park near the pump rooms with mineral water. With them you can go to the vicinity of Zheleznovodsk, to the neighboring resorts of the Stavropol Territory, and even to the neighboring republics of Karachay-Cherkessia (Dombay, Arkhyz), Kabardino-Balkaria (Elbrus), Chechnya. The cost of excursions starts from 500 rubles per person, discounts for children.
As for entertainment, they are not here. In the resort park in the high season, tents with simple attractions like a shooting gallery, rental children's cars, gyroscuters, etc.are exhibited, and that's all. Some more simple entertainment can be found around the resort (decorative) Lake, and there to swim and sunbathe. In the evening, except for walks in the park, there is absolutely nothing to do, except on certain days according to the schedule in the Pushkin gallery to attend a performance or concert.
