What to See in Arkhyz: All Attractions and Activities

Arkhyz is surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks, waterfalls, and caves, which are its main attractions during a summer vacation in the village. You can visit them by following one of the tourist routes on foot, some are accessible by tour or personal vehicle, or on horseback.

Besides natural beauty, there are also historical and religious attractions near Arkhyz. Be sure to visit the historical-architectural archaeological complex in Nizhny Arkhyz. There you'll also find a place of pilgrimage for believers – the amazing miraculous image of Christ on the rock.

If hiking and jeeping aren't your thing, you can enjoy mountain views from observation platforms reached by cable cars. But you need to know that these are not in the village of Arkhyz itself, but at the ski resort in Romantik settlement, 10 kilometers away.

Arkhyz also offers seasonal active recreation: horseback riding, ATVs, rafting, multi-day hiking, snowmobile rides, go-karting, banya, sauna, and even spa. You can find these almost everywhere, with many offers. We've been coming to Arkhyz for years and have seen with our own eyes how everything is developing, with the number and variety of entertainment and tourist activities increasing every year, new routes appearing, and it's very pleasing.

You can find tours and activities in Arkhyz through advertisements (the whole village is covered in ads and promotions with phone numbers and social media contacts of organizers and private guides), many organizers now even have their own websites with price lists. Tours are also offered at hotels, guest houses, and recreation centers. Finally, there are two main locations where you can go to find everything at once:

  • Main Lenin Street, especially the intersection with Khubieva Street. There are many travel agencies along the street, and near the intersection, there's a parking area with private driver-guides.
  • Taulu Glade (Sofia Glade) – the main tourist zone and departure point for tour jeeps to all the attractions. Here you'll also find ATVs and off-road vehicles for rent, horseback riding, and much more.

Overall, there are many offers in Arkhyz, but if you need to save money, you need to understand how things work here. Let's try to explain:

The typical model where you go to a travel agency, see a price list with a schedule for inexpensive group tours, and just choose doesn't really work here. It's a bit more complicated. In most cases, prices are quoted not per person but for the whole vehicle (jeep for 6-10 people, off-road vehicle for 4-6 people, etc.). If you're alone or with one other person, it can be quite expensive, but there is a way to make it cheaper. You can ask the tour organizer to find you travel companions, which is a common practice but not guaranteed. You leave a request and your contact info and wait for a few more people to join; they'll usually call you when the group is formed. Another option is to look for companions among other tourists yourself while walking around the village, in cafes, in our Caucasus Telegram chat, or while visiting other attractions. So, it all depends on your negotiating skills and your ability to wait for a group to form.

You can also select and book tours in Arkhyz on aggregator sites. It's safe and convenient, and you can read reviews before booking:

Arkhyz is a popular weekend getaway for residents of KCR cities and neighboring regions. Because of this, there are often crowds on the tourist trails on Saturdays and Sundays. If your vacation happens to fall on a weekend, try to hit the trails as early in the morning as possible.

In winter, most of the natural attractions and beauty of Arkhyz are inaccessible or simply not interesting to visit, leaving only skiing, the tourist cable car, and snowmobiling.

On the way, you'll see waterfalls and several other picturesque lakes: Aimatly Dzhagaldy, Sapozhok, Zapyataya. The route requires good physical fitness: the length is 3.8 to 6 km one way with an elevation gain of 900–1200 meters. The optimal option is to ascend from Glacier Farm (3.8 km) and descend to Syrzavod Glade (4.3 km) to avoid the steepest section. Entry is free, the season is July–August. Near the end of the climb, the trail splits: one continues along the stream, the other sharply to the right. Both lead to the waterfall, but it's better to go right, as the direct path is more difficult with steep rocky climbs.

Seven-Color Lake and Dukka Lakes

Seven-Color Lake and Dukka Lakes in Arkhyz
Seven-Color Lake — the main gem of the Dukka lake system

Seven-Color Lake is the crown jewel among the high-mountain lakes of Arkhyz, part of the Dukka Lakes system. The water here changes shades from turquoise to emerald depending on the light. The routes split into two directions: to the lakes of Malaya Dukka (Rybka, Arkasarskoye, and Skazka Kavkaza lakes, 5.6–7 km one way) and to Bolshaya Dukka, where Seven-Color Lake is located (8.5 km). Entry is free; the road to the trailhead is accessible by high-clearance vehicle (the last 2 km is a rough dirt road; you can leave your car before the bridge). The routes are suitable for a day hike but require good physical fitness and trekking shoes. More about Seven-Color Lake and the Dukka Lakes and how to visit them.

Bottomless Lake (Karst Sinkhole)

Bottomless Lake, Arkhyz
Bottomless Lake — a karst sinkhole with blue water

Bottomless Lake (karst sinkhole) is located at an altitude of 2320 meters — the most accessible mountain lake in the Arkhyz area. Most of the road from Romantik settlement is paved; then 4 km are a dirt road with steep climbs where it's better not to risk taking a regular car. You can leave your car at the parking area where the pavement ends and walk, taking 1.5–2 hours one way. Entry is free, the water is not very cold — you can swim. This is an ideal option for a first independent introduction to the mountains: it requires no special preparation, and the views are stunning. More about Bottomless Lake and how to visit it.

Kazachiy Waterfall

Kazachiy Waterfall, Arkhyz
Kazachiy Waterfall

This is one of the most accessible natural attractions near the center of Arkhyz, reached by the easiest hiking trail in Teberda Nature Reserve. Moreover, most of the path can be covered on horseback, with rentals available before the entrance for 500 rubles per hour. From the center to the waterfall, you'll need to cover 2.5 kilometers with only 180 meters of elevation gain, with most of the path being gentle and shaded by the forest. Only the last couple of hundred meters require climbing up a trail. In summer, the waterfall isn't very powerful, appearing as a thin stream of water flowing down the rock. There is no pool at its base. More about Kazachiy Waterfall and how to get there.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: Entry to the trail via the reserve checkpoint from 08:00 to 18:00, best visited from May to September.

After the bridge, you'll need to walk another 500 meters to reach the gate and checkpoint. You cannot reach the checkpoint from Arkhyz without crossing the bridge. After the checkpoint, it's a 30-minute walk to the waterfall, 20 minutes to the Sleeping Lake.

Viewpoint over Arkhyz and Alanian Tower

Viewpoint, Arkhyz
Viewpoint

The most accessible and free viewpoint with a view of the village and its surroundings is a few tens of minutes' walk from the center. It's not equipped, just an open spot on the rock. It can't be considered a must-see place, but if you've already seen everything, you can climb up to it. More about the viewpoint in Arkhyz.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: 24/7.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free.

🚶 How to Get There: The viewpoint is located on a hill northeast of the village (viewpoint on the map). It's a 2.5-kilometer walk with 200 meters of elevation gain, taking just under an hour.

Lake of Love

Heart-shaped Lake of Love in Arkhyz, view from above
Lake of Love: the heart shape is only visible from above

The Lake of Love is one of the main attractions of Arkhyz, famous for its heart shape, which can only be seen from a bird's-eye view. The route starts at the Teberda Nature Reserve checkpoint, with a round-trip distance of 15 km and an elevation gain of over 900 meters. Along the way, you'll enjoy scenic views of the valley and mountain ranges, and at the finish — icy water and alpine meadows. The hike requires good physical fitness and a full day, but the experience is worth it. If you have energy left, you can continue to the secluded Belkau-Kyol Lake (another 2.5 km). Entry to the trail is 200 rubles. More about Lake of Love and how to visit it.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: Checkpoint from 08:00 to 18:00, better to leave early in the morning.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: entry to the trail is 200 rubles (children and concessionaries free).

🚶 How to Get There: The route starts at the reserve checkpoint beyond the bridge over the Arkhyz River (on the map). A 30–40 minute walk from the center of Arkhyz, or you can take a taxi (200–300 USD) or leave your car near the checkpoint or before the bridge over the river. From there, it's 7.5 km on foot or by horseback to the lake (on the map).

Bely Waterfall (Belye Vodopady)

Bely Waterfall (Belye Vodopady) in Arkhyz
Bely Waterfall — a series of cascades on the Pshysh River

Bely Waterfall (or Belye Vodopady) is a series of cascades and roaring rapids on a tributary of the Pshysh River. However, in our opinion, this route is one of the most tedious in Arkhyz: almost 10 km from Taulu Glade along a forest dirt road without views, with a constant stream of jeeps and ATVs raising dust. The waterfall itself is impressive, but the road might overshadow the experience. So, only go here if you've already seen all the main attractions or enjoy technical off-roading. Entry is free; from Taulu Glade to the end of the dirt road is only for prepared off-road vehicles or on foot (6–8 hours round trip), the last 600 meters are on foot up a steep trail. More about Bely Waterfall and how to visit it.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: 24/7, better to go in the morning.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free. Jeeping from Taulu Glade — from 1000 rubles per person, ATV rental — from 4000 rubles.

🚶 How to Get There: The nearest point for a regular car is Taulu Glade (on the map). From there to the waterfall (on the map) is 10 km along a very bad dirt road with fords — only for prepared off-road vehicles or on foot. At the end of the dirt road — parking and a cafe, then 600 meters on foot along a trail (20–30 minutes, 115 m elevation gain).

Arkhyz Cave

Cave, Arkhyz
The Cave

A small unnamed man-made cave (adit) is located on the outskirts of Arkhyz, near the start of the trail to Barytovy Waterfall. It's about 20 meters deep; you can enter standing up, after which it narrows. Inside, there's nothing remarkable except for the graffiti left by tourists. The origin and purpose of the cave could not be determined from locals (the site authors), but it can be assumed it was carved out in search of minerals or for stone extraction. More about the cave in Arkhyz and photos.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: 24/7.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free.

🚶 How to Get There: Located on the outskirts of Arkhyz near the start of the trail to Barytovy Waterfall (cave on the map). The entrance is clearly visible from the road, but it's better to use coordinates from our map to find it.

Alanian Settlement

Alanian Settlement in Arkhyz, Arkhyz
Alanian Settlement in Arkhyz

It is believed that many historical monuments can be seen in the vicinity of Arkhyz — ruins from the period of the ancient Alanian kingdom. But the only developed place where you can get acquainted with the heritage of that era is the open-air museum, the Nizhne-Arkhyz Historical-Architectural Archaeological Complex, or simply the Alanian Settlement. It is supposedly located on the site of the ancient capital of the Alanian state — the city of Maas. It covers a large area, so it's better to move around by car or at least by bicycle. Currently, there are three ancient temples (one of them is active), a statue of a Turkic warrior, and a stone circle that supposedly served as a solar calendar. More about the Alanian Settlement in Arkhyz.

🚶 How to Get There: The archaeological park is located in the village of Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (Alanian Settlement on the map). It's best to get here by your own transport, taxi, or on a tour. To enter the area, you first need to pass through the barrier to the village. To do this, at the checkpoint you must present documents to be recorded in the log. A few dozen meters after the barrier, you'll find the entrance to the archaeological complex itself, where you need to purchase a ticket, and then drive further within the territory. You can also take any bus from Arkhyz.

Miraculous Image of Christ on the Rock

Miraculous Image of Christ on the Rock, Arkhyz
Miraculous Image of Christ on the Rock

This is an icon depicting Jesus, created on a rock near Nizhny Arkhyz. It was discovered in 1999 and has since been considered sacred. A church was even built nearby for its veneration, and thousands of believers flock here every year. However, historians and researchers believe that the image on the rock was created by humans in the 9th-11th centuries, and some even propose a theory about the modern origin of the face. Be that as it may, this place is interesting and worth visiting. More about the Miraculous Image of Christ on the Rock.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: during daylight hours.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: free.

🚶 How to Get There: The image is on a rock near Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (image on the map). It's best to get here by your own transport or taxi; there is a spacious parking lot. You can also take any bus from Arkhyz.

Zelenchukskaya Observatory

Zelenchukskaya Observatory in Arkhyz
Zelenchukskaya Observatory, Wikimedia

This is the largest operating observatory in Russia and one of the most significant in the world. It was founded in the USSR in 1966, for which the largest optical telescope in the world at the time (with a 6-meter mirror diameter, now the second largest) and a radio telescope with a 600-meter antenna were built. Today, any tourist can visit the observatory on a guided tour. There is also a special night tour with stargazing through a CELESTRON telescope with a 280mm objective lens and 660x magnification. The cost of such a tour for 10 people is 5000 rubles. More about the Zelenchukskaya Observatory.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: Tours are only conducted when groups of at least 10 people are formed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 09:00 to 15:00.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: Cost of a general tour is 200 rubles for adults, 100 rubles for children.

🚶 How to Get There: The observatory is located in the village of Nizhny Arkhyz, 25 kilometers from Arkhyz (Zelenchukskaya Observatory on the map). It's best to get there by your own transport, taxi, or on a tour. Public transport is not possible.

Arkhyz Cable Cars

Cable car in Arkhyz
Cable car

There are no ski lifts in the village of Arkhyz itself; they are all located in the Romantik settlement and on Lunaya Polyana, 10 kilometers away. This is where skiing enthusiasts spend most of their time, but those who don't ski will also find the cable cars interesting. Some of the cable cars operate in excursion mode during the summer. The cable cars lead to the peaks and slopes of the surrounding mountains, reaching heights of up to 3050 meters (Orbita) and Apollon (2840 meters). From there, you get stunning views of mountain peaks, some covered with glaciers. If you wish, you can walk along the trails or ski runs, reach mountain streams, or walk to Mount Smirnov (from the "Severnoye Siyanie" station). In short, it's all interesting and even exciting, but there's one downside – the cost of excursion tickets is quite high. The good thing is that by purchasing one "sightseeing" ticket, you can ride all the cable cars that are operating at the resort at that time, not just individual lifts or sections.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: The excursion (sightseeing) cable cars operate in summer from 09:00 to 16:30, but hours may change, so check locally. In winter, the schedule is different, usually from 08:00 to 15:30.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: Excursion (sightseeing) tickets come in several types: standard ones for ascent and descent on all lifts, and combined tickets (including the rope park, guide services, go-karting at the bottom). The minimum cost is 2800 rubles, children aged 6-17 – 1700 rubles. You can buy them at the cable car ticket offices; advance purchase is not required. In the winter season, it's more advantageous to purchase multi-use SkiPass tickets. For more details about the lifts and trails for the ski season, see the resort's website – arhyz-resort.ru

🚶 How to Get There: The cable car stations are located 10 kilometers from Arkhyz in the Romantik and Lunaya Polyana ski resorts (cable cars on the map). Buses from Lenin Street in Arkhyz to Romantik settlement run several times a day, or you can take a taxi for 700 rubles (see Arkhyz transport, how to get around).

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding, Arkhyz
Horseback riding

In Arkhyz, there are several places where you can go horseback riding, including covering some of the tourist routes in the Teberda Nature Reserve and other trails on horseback. You can rent a horse and ride independently, or take a guided tour. Riding is offered for both groups and individuals, with the price varying little.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: There is no set schedule for horseback riding tours; they start at any time convenient for you by arrangement.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: Cost of riding from 500 rubles/hour.

🚶 How to Get There: Horseback riding is offered by vendors and in travel agencies on Lenin Street, or you can walk along Khubieva Street across the bridge; the rental will be 200 meters after it.

Rafting

Rafting, Arkhyz
Rafting bases in Arkhyz

One of the most extreme activities in Arkhyz is rafting – descending the Bolshoy Zelenchuk River on inflatable rafts. The cost of rafting in Arkhyz is lower than on other popular Russian resorts, so if you haven't tried this type of activity, now is the time to try it here.

All necessary equipment is provided for rafting, along with an instructor for the group. The Bolshoy Zelenchuk River is quite calm, without rapids, so even children are allowed.

Practical Information

🕐 Opening Hours: There is no set schedule; departures occur several times a day when a group is gathered.

💵 Entry Fee / Ticket Price: from 1200 rubles/person for an 8-kilometer rafting trip, 1500 rubles for 10 kilometers.

🚶 How to Get There: You can buy rafting tours through vendors on the main Lenin Street or at hotels, or come directly to the organizers located near the bridge over the river on Khubieva Street.

Day 1: Sofia Lakes — full day (6–8 hours). Best to start the trail in the morning. You can leave your car at Taulu Glade and camp overnight or rent a cabin.

Day 2: Seven-Color Lake and Dukka Lakes — another challenging trek (5–7 hours). If you're running low on energy, limit yourself to the Malaya Dukka lakes — they are more accessible.

💡 Tip: For this route, be sure to bring trekking poles, plenty of water, and warm clothing — it can be cool at altitude even in summer. This option is only suitable for physically fit individuals; there is a lot of walking involved.

🌴 2-Day Itinerary (Light)

Day 1: Choose any of the one-day itineraries above — active, family, or historical.

Day 2: Lake of Love — a 4–5 hour hike (7.5 km one way, 900 m elevation gain). After returning, take an easy walk to Kazachiy Waterfall (2.5 km, almost no elevation gain).

Day 1: 1-day historical itinerary (Alanian Settlement + Image of Christ + Observatory).

Day 2: 1-day family or comfortable relaxation itinerary (Kazachiy Waterfall + Cable Car).

💡 Tip: This option allows you to leisurely explore a variety of Arkhyz attractions without overloading. Each day offers a different type of experience: nature, history, activity.

📌 General Planning Tips:

  • On weekends, popular routes (Sofia Waterfalls, Bottomless Lake, Bely Waterfall) can be crowded. Try to hit the trail before 9:00 AM.
  • For high-exertion routes, be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, a raincoat, and a warm jacket — mountain weather changes quickly.
  • If you're not up for long hikes, almost all attractions can be visited by jeep, ATV, or horseback — offers are available at Taulu Glade and in the village center.

What to Bring to Arkhyz in Summer: Checklist for Hikes and Tours

The weather in the mountains changes in 15 minutes, and most of the routes described above are at an altitude of 2000–3000 meters. So that the hike doesn't turn into a trial, we've put together a checklist: what you absolutely must put in your daypack.

Important: it is dangerous to go on difficult routes (Sofia Lakes, Seven-Color Lake, Lake of Love) without proper equipment. At altitude, even in July, it can be +5℃ with strong wind, and rain is common.

What to put in your daypack for a hiking route:

  • 🥾 Footwear: only trekking boots with a stiff sole and good tread, must be broken in. Sneakers, ballet flats, or flip-flops on the routes to Sofia Lakes and Lake of Love are a direct path to injury and a ruined vacation.
  • 🎒 Gear: trekking poles — greatly relieve knees on descents (can be rented in Arkhyz); raincoat (mandatory, even if it's sunny in the morning); fleece or warm sweater (it can be cold at altitude even in July); spare socks.
  • 💧 Water and food: water — at least 1.5 liters per person (2–3 liters for difficult routes); snacks (sandwiches, nuts, chocolate, fruit). There are no sources of drinking water on the routes.
  • 📱 Navigation and communication: charged phone with offline maps. We recommend the apps Organic Maps or Maps.me — they work without internet, determine your position by satellites, and have all the Arkhyz trails marked on them. Be sure to download the region's maps in advance. Power bank in your pack — communication and navigation drain the phone quickly.
  • 💊 First-aid kit: band-aids for blisters (essential!), elastic bandage (in case of sprain), pain reliever. For long hikes, add motion sickness medicine if you're sensitive to serpentine roads.
  • 😎 Sun protection: sunscreen SPF 50+ (apply before setting out), headwear (cap, sun hat, or bandana), sunglasses — only with UV400 protection from a sports store. The sun burns even on cloudy days in the mountains.
  • 🕷 Insect protection: mosquito repellent (present in lowlands, near water, and in the village) and tick repellent. Ticks are active in May-June but are found in forests and tall grass up until September. Although this is not very critical for Arkhyz, it's still better to treat your shoes and the bottom of your pants with an acaricidal agent before setting out on a route (Sofia Lakes, Lake of Love, Dukka). After the walk, check yourself and your companions.
  • 💡 Tip: trekking poles can be rented in Arkhyz on Lenin Street (there are several rental points). It's cheaper than bringing your own, especially if you fly without checked baggage.

And if you're going on a jeep, ATV, or horseback tour:

  • The same trekking or sports shoes — you'll have to get out of the vehicle and walk in any case (for example, the last 2 km to Sofia Waterfalls are on foot).
  • Windbreaker or fleece — it's windy and cool at altitude even in the middle of summer.
  • Water and snacks — there are no cafes or shops on many routes.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen — essential: on a jeep tour, you spend a lot of time outdoors.

Weather in Arkhyz: Check Before Hitting the Trail

The forecast for the village and for the highlands are two very different things. At an altitude of 2500–3000 meters (Sofia Lakes, Seven-Color Lake, Lake of Love), the perceived temperature can be 10–15℃ lower than in Arkhyz, and the chance of rain is higher. Before heading out on a route, be sure to check the highland forecast on services like MeteoGrad or Windy.
