Description and Is It Worth Visiting

Barite Waterfall, Arkhyz
Barite Waterfall

Barite Waterfall is one of the most popular attractions near Arkhyz, which you can visit independently on a simple day hike, and it's completely free. The waterfall is not located within the Teberda Nature Reserve, so access is free, and no border zone permits are required.

Of course, it's not just the Barite Waterfall itself that's interesting, but also the route to it, which runs along a stream through a beautiful forest, with even some decent views along the way. However, overall, this route is not the most scenic in the Arkhyz area, as the views are often hidden by trees and the slopes of the gorge. The Barite Waterfall is not a raging torrent, but it is tall. Once you reach it, you can cool off under its streams, but there is no pool for swimming at its base. You can also set up for a picnic nearby, and in summer even sunbathe, as the area in front of the waterfall is exposed to the sun all day.

Views from Barite Waterfall towards Arkhyz

The trail doesn't end at the waterfall; it continues up the hillside and further into the mountains towards alpine lakes and several peaks over 3,000 meters. The mountain views there are simply stunning, but that's a multi-day route requiring a tent and proper hiking gear. However, if you want, you can climb just a little higher from the waterfall onto the ridge to catch at least a glimpse of those views.

Also, at the very beginning of the ascent to the waterfall, where the stream branches, there is a trail heading to the right. Just a few dozen meters along it lies a cave about 20 meters deep and tall enough to stand in.

Now, about the hiking route itself. Although it's considered one of the easiest near Arkhyz, in reality, it requires considerable strength and endurance. From the village center, you need to cover 3.5 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 700 meters, which is a lot for inexperienced hikers. The ascent will take 2 to 4 hours depending on your fitness level, and the descent 1-2 hours. Considering the time spent at the waterfall, you should set aside half a day or even a full day, and it's best to start in the morning while it's still not too hot. No special skills or gear are needed for the route, but having good hiking footwear and trekking poles is highly recommended. Also, bring drinking water (you can refill from the stream along the way), sunglasses, a hat, and some snacks.

🚶 How to Get There

The start of the hiking route to the waterfall is on the northern outskirts of the village of Arkhyz, and the waterfall itself is 3.5 kilometers from the center, 700 meters higher, at an altitude of approximately 2100 meters above sea level (waterfall on the map). You can drive to the trailhead, but from there it's only on foot. A single trail leads up the gorge along the stream — it's impossible to get lost. Near the end of the ascent, the trail splits: one continues along the stream, the other sharply turns right. It's better to take the right path, as the direct route is more difficult, with steep, rocky sections. The ascent takes 2 to 4 hours depending on your fitness level, and the descent 1-2 hours.
