Arkhyz is located in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, 1600 kilometers from Moscow, 370 from Krasnodar, and 230 from Stavropol (Arkhyz on the map). Getting here by public transport is not easy, as there are practically no direct flights from Russian cities. Rare direct intercity buses connect Arkhyz with Stavropol, Kislovodsk, Mineralnye Vody, Nevinnomyssk, Cherkessk, Teberda, and Zelenchukskaya, and you'll have to get here via a transfer through these cities. By plane, people usually get here via Mineralnye Vody Airport, and the nearest train station is in Nevinnomyssk. You can only get here directly by your own car, and this is probably the best way to get to know Arkhyz and the entire republic.
In 2029, the opening of Arkhyz Airport is planned, which will make the resort much closer. However, knowing Russian realities, we assume that the network of routes will be very limited, and airfare will be high. Therefore, both now and for the future, we recommend and use personal transport or a taxi (for the last leg from the airport or train station) for trips to Arkhyz.
Below we will tell you in more detail about all the ways and means to get to Arkhyz, but first, here's an infographic for a general understanding:
By Plane: How to Fly to Mineralnye Vody (MRV) and Other Airports
Karachay-Cherkessia does not have a passenger airport, so to get to Arkhyz by plane, you need to fly to Mineralnye Vody Airport (210 kilometers), Stavropol (230 kilometers), or Krasnodar (360 kilometers).
The most convenient option is via Mineralnye Vody International Airport (IATA code: MRV, airport website – http://mvairport.ru/). Frequent regular flights operate here from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Yekaterinburg, and many other cities. There are also international flights to Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Dubai, Yerevan, Baku, Thessaloniki. If there are no direct flights from your city, you can always fly with a layover in Moscow or Rostov-on-Don. Moreover, sometimes flights with a layover in Moscow are cheaper than direct ones.
You can find flights to Mineralnye Vody, including with layovers, on reliable aggregators Aviasales and Trip.com (compare prices on both systems, they may differ), or through this Aviasales form:

From Mineralnye Vody Airport to Arkhyz: Transfer, Taxi, and Bus
Taxi and Transfer
- 💵 Cost: from 5000 rubles
- ⏲ Travel time: 3-5 hours
The airport in Mineralnye Vody is 210 kilometers from Arkhyz (Mineralnye Vody Airport on the map), and there is no direct transport link. Therefore, the best way to get from there to Arkhyz is by taxi or by using a tourist transfer service.
A private taxi will cost from 5000 rubles after haggling, depending on the season and time of day. You can order a car at the counter in the arrivals terminal or negotiate with drivers in the taxi parking area outside the airport.
Unfortunately, in our experience, it's not always quick to find a driver willing to go to Arkhyz at a reasonable price. In such cases, you can use the YandexGo or Uber apps to order a ride, but the price will be higher – from 6000 rubles. You can also try ordering from a local taxi company "ETO" by phone at 8-928-384-29-99, 8-963-283-29-99; their prices are usually lower.
The most convenient way to get from Mineralnye Vody Airport to Arkhyz is to book a tourist transfer. You can arrange it in advance from home, and the driver will meet you at the airport with a sign and take you to your desired hotel in Arkhyz with no hassle and greater comfort than a taxi. The good thing is you can order a passenger car for up to 4 people, or a minivan for a group of up to 7 travelers. You can check prices and book a transfer on these sites:
Or use this search form:
Public Transport
- 💵 Cost: from 1000 rubles
- ⏲ Travel time: 4-6 hours
If a taxi or tourist transfer is too expensive for you, you can take public transport, though this may require a transfer or aligning with the schedule. There are two options:
- A direct bus from the stop and terminal. It runs twice a day (at 08:35 and 12:35), costs from 1000 rubles. It's better to buy tickets in advance.
- With a transfer at the Mineralnye Vody bus station. From the airport, take a taxi for about 200 rubles, or minibus #11 for 50 rubles (runs every 20-30 minutes, travel time 20 minutes) to get to the new Mineralnye Vody bus station. Minibus #11 does not go directly to the bus station, but to a stop from which it's a 10-minute walk, so a taxi is preferable. From the Mineralnye Vody bus station, three buses depart daily (at 07:00, 08:10, and 12:25). The cost is also from 1000 rubles.
Where to buy tickets:

Which of these two stations is better to go to, choose based on the availability of trains from your city and the convenience of connecting with the bus for the transfer:
- From Mineralnye Vody, the bus departs several times a day from the bus station (see schedule above), which you still need to get to from the train station (taxi from 150 rubles or city bus/minibus #11 for 50 USD), for which you should budget about 1 hour. See more details in the article, how to get to Mineralnye Vody here.
- From Nevinnomyssk, the bus departs at 13:10 and 14:30, and the bus station is located near the train station.
Another option to get closer to Arkhyz by rail is to take an electric train from Nevinnomyssk to Cherkessk. Electric trains run at least twice a day, travel time 1.5 hours, cost from 116 rubles. Then from Cherkessk you will have to take a taxi or buses with a transfer in Zelenchukskaya, as direct buses leave early in the morning.

By Car: Road, Parking in Arkhyz and Romantik
A good paved road leads to Arkhyz and the Romantik settlement itself, with some curves in places, but it's not a serpentine road.
Important: There is no gas station in Arkhyz; the nearest one is in Zelenchukskaya, 50 kilometers away. Fill up in advance!
Parking in Arkhyz and Romantik: Important Nuances
In the village of Arkhyz, parking is not a problem. We didn't find any official paid parking lots. You can park your car anywhere for a short period. However, the main Lenin Street is usually packed with locals and tour jeeps — it's better not to park there, and there are also prohibition signs. It's much easier to find a free spot by turning off the main street into courtyards or onto dirt roads.
For long-term parking, most accommodation options offer free parking on the premises or nearby. If you're going on a hike and need to leave your car without staying at a hotel, you can arrange it through any guest house — cost from 100 rubles/day.
In the Romantik settlement, the parking situation is much more difficult. There are prohibition signs almost everywhere, and tow trucks are actively working. Options:
- Paid parking — from 500 rubles/night.
- Hourly parking — up to 800 rubles/hour (prices are "astronomical," as in the photo below).
- Free — only in 2-3 places on widened shoulders of the main road or outside the settlement.
Attention! Personal experience: We have seen multiple times cars being towed from the shoulders and safety islands on the main road in Romantik, even when they weren't blocking anyone. The tow truck arrives within minutes after the drivers leave. Therefore, we advise not to take risks and pay close attention to the signs. If you came to Romantik just for a day trip, just one kilometer from the center, outside the settlement, you can find many places for free parking on the shoulders and turn-offs from the pavement.
Transportation in Arkhyz: How to Get Between the Village and the Romantik Resort
Arkhyz is a small village, and you won't need transport for moving around within it. If you need to get to the Romantik settlement, where the ski lifts are located, or to Taulu Glade (where tour jeeps and ATVs are), you can use the local bus or a taxi.
A taxi ride from Arkhyz to Romantik will cost about 500 rubles. During the high season (winter), local drivers organize transportation to the lifts for skiers in private cars for groups, charging 500 rubles per person, and they operate like minibuses.
Ordering cars through apps like YandexGo, Uber, etc., works in Arkhyz. But (from personal experience), orders are not always accepted, and you might wait a long time for a car. So if you need a timely ride, for example, to get to Taulu Glade and then catch a tour jeep, it's better to arrange a transfer to the location as part of the excursion, or go to the main Lenin Street and hire a private taxi there.
There are no local city buses in Arkhyz, but passing buses from Arkhyz to Romantik run several times a day, departing at: 07:30, 09:30, 11:10, 11:30, 12:40, 15:20, 17:10. Departures from Romantik: 08:10, 12:00, 13:30, 14:45, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30. The schedule may change, so check it at the stop (Arkhyz bus station on the map).
In winter, comfortable shuttle buses run between Arkhyz and Romantik with space for ski equipment, and if you have a ski pass for the lifts, the ride is free.
Traveling in Your Own Car Around the Area: Risks and Recommendations
Now let's talk a little more about the road conditions and getting around in your own car. First of all, it's very convenient, and we ourselves have driven all over the area. But you need to understand that not all roads here are suitable for regular cars.
There is only one good paved road: it's the main road through Arkhyz (Lenin Street), which then leads to the Romantik settlement and continues further towards the village of Phiya. The road towards Phiya is being completed and will be extended, but currently you can drive at least another 13 kilometers on excellent pavement.
All other roads here are dirt roads, mostly mountain and rocky, and in some places, it's serious off-road terrain suitable only for the toughest off-road vehicles. You can get around the village of Arkhyz itself in any car, and you can drive to Taulu Glade (the dirt road there is passable). But everything else is questionable.
Therefore, we advise you to be very cautious about this and not venture in sedans or crossovers, especially without experience driving on bad and mountain roads, just anywhere. We have seen many cars here with smashed bumpers and leaking oil.
To avoid damaging your car and your nerves: before heading out to the natural attractions in your own car, be sure to study the road conditions. We have driven all over the Arkhyz area and prepared a detailed report for each location. Here's a quick cheat sheet:
- Taulu Glade (Sofia Glade) — any car can make it. The last 1.8 km are a dirt road, but passable. Tours to Sofia Waterfalls and Lakes start from here.
- Sofia Waterfalls — beyond Taulu Glade, only by off-road vehicle (10 km of difficult road to Glacier Farm). The last 2 km to the waterfall are on foot in any case.
- Sofia Lakes — require an off-road vehicle to get to Glacier Farm or the Sofia Shelter. Then a hiking route — 3.8–6 km with an elevation gain of up to 1200 m, good physical fitness required.
- Seven-Color Lake and Dukka Lakes — you can get to the fork (beyond the bridge) in any car with some experience. Further on, rough dirt roads and trails — only for off-road vehicles and on foot.
- Bottomless Lake — any car can reach the end of the pavement. From there, 4 km on foot (1.5–2 hours) or by off-road vehicle/ATV.
- Barytovy Waterfall — you can drive to the start of the trail in any car, then only on foot (3.5 km with a 700 m elevation gain).
- Bely Waterfall — only by prepared off-road vehicle or on foot. 10 km from Taulu Glade on a very bad dirt road with fords. A regular car has no business there.
Our main advice: if you're unsure of your skills, the road seems difficult, or you have a regular sedan/crossover — don't risk it. In Arkhyz, it's easy to hire a jeep with a driver or buy a tour that includes transport (from 1000–2000 rubles per person). This often works out cheaper than repairing the suspension or paying for a tow truck later.
