Transport in Nizhny Novgorod and how to move

Article and Section Navigation

General information and modes of transport

InNizhny Novgorod there is a developed public transport system, including buses and taxis, trolleybuses, trams, metro. There are also suburban trains and even a cable car for crossing to the other side of the river. Quickly and inexpensively you can get from almost anywhere in the city to another, without resorting to a personal car or taxi. True, it is worth noting that a trip by a group of 3-4 people by taxi for short distances in Nizhny Novgorod will cost less and much faster than by bus.

The network of urban routes is developed and confusing, but if you need to get from one place to another on a one-time basis, you can plan a trip using the following sites, where all routes are presented electronically on the map:

You can also use websites or map applications to plan routes on public transport Yandex, Google and 2GIS. In all of them, the routes are presented quite accurately, and even the location of individual buses, trams, etc. is shown. However, systems do not always automatically find the best route with or without transfers, sometimes simply point-blank refusing to offer direct flights on existing routes, and instead plan trips with transfers. Therefore, it is better to double-check their work, manually sorting out routes, or check with local residents or bus drivers.

When using the above-mentioned applications, we recommend downloading offline map data in advance, so as not to waste time and mobile traffic when searching for a route directly on the streets of Nizhny Novgorod.

Fare

The fare depends on the payment method (cash, card, travel card) and the specific type of transport and route. In general, the price order is:

  • Metro, trolleybus, tram, bus-28 rubles one-time trip when paying by bank card or cash / 28 rubles when paying by city transport card "Citicard"
  • Fixed-route taxis-from 30 rubles depending on the route
  • Children under 7 years-free of charge

You can pay for travel in cash, a contactless bank card, a city transport card "Citicard" or a Moscow transport card "Troika" (the "Troika" is planned to be launched in 2021). In fixed-route taxis, payment in most cases is made in cash.

City transport card "Citicard" provides a small discount of 2 rubles per trip. So, trams, trolleybuses and separate routes of buses and trolleybuses cost the same when paying for "Citicard" and in other ways. So in our opinion, the expediency of its use by tourists who came to the city for a few days is a big question.

You can get a non-personal (non-personal) Citicard card at any post office or one of the many replenishment points for 50 rubles (activation cost). This money does not fall into the account, but in fact is a fee for its issuance. After that, the card can be replenished at points, machines or online, and immediately begin to use. Just keep in mind that to recoup the cost of this card, you will have to make 25 trips, and only then will the trips go with savings.

You can get a personal free card, but for tourists this option is not suitable, because for this you need to fill out an application on the website with passport data and SNILS, and after 14 days get it at one of the points of issue. If you still decide to issue it, then on the site siticard.ru you can get additional information about the cost and places of purchase, and even issue an online card for smartphones equipped with NFC.

There are also travel tickets that are activated on the citicard transport card. For example, there is a daily unlimited travel for 120 rubles, a 60-minute pass (called an "electronic wallet") for 28 rubles, etc. However, you need to take into account that you will not be able to use one card with a travel card with the whole family or group, you will have to issue it for each traveler separately. Learn more about the types of travel cards here - siticard.ru. And by the way, passes are not valid on all routes, you can check it here - siticard.ru/fare-on-routes/.

Transport opening hours

Public transport is available from 05:00 to 00:00. Some routes (mainly buses and trolleybuses) stop running after 21 hours.

The Metro also operates until about 00:00 hours, but some stations close at 19:00, and on some the last flights are operated until 00:10.

On foot

  • 🕐 working hours: around the clock
  • 🎫 cost: free

Within the tourist center of the city, tourists can easily move on foot. This area is within walking distance from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya (pedestrian street), Rozhdestvenskaya, Ilyinskaya and around the Kremlin. Moreover, it is usually even faster than by taxi or public transport. So before you call a taxi or look for a stop, estimate on the map whether it is easier to walk the distance. You can use any online map or offline map application to navigate Organic Maps, OSM and other similar. We recommend downloading our points of interest attractions of Nizhny Novgorod from interactive mapin these applications.

However, we advise you to take into account the poor readiness of Nizhny Novgorod for hiking during the low season in late spring, winter and early autumn. The fact is that the municipal services of the city cope with snow, ice and water on the streets hardly on the "three". Sidewalks are poorly cleaned or even not cleaned at all, even in the very center, it can be very slippery; icicles and snow on the pitched roofs of houses are dangerous; and in the spring just "city flood" begins, and without rubber boots it is problematic to walk.

Taxi

  • 🕐 working hours: around the clock
  • 🎫 cost: from 69 rubles

The cost of a short taxi ride starts from 69 rubles on the meter, a trip from one end of the city to the other will cost up to 600 rubles, from the airport to the city center – 200-450 rubles. But all these are prices without taking into account the rush hour period or bad weather, when the price can double. Peak hours in Nizhny Novgorod are usually on weekdays from about 07:00 to 09:30 and from 17:00 to 19:00.

All popular aggregators operate here (Yandex.Taxi, CityLink, Uber, Gett, Maxim), taxi ordering by phone and traditional "bombings" at Station parking lots and near tourist places with a trip at a fixed cost. As usual, for short distances it is better to use a taxi on meters with an order through applications or by phone, and for long distances to neighboring cities and to suburban attractions it makes sense to negotiate a fixed cost with Street taxi drivers.

Buses and taxis

  • 🕐 opening hours: 05:00-00:00
  • 🎫 cost: 26/28 rubles

Nizhny Novgorod is served by both large city buses and small taxis. On some routes, their movement coincides, so there is not much difference which of them to choose. Payment in "minibuses" is usually made in cash, cards are accepted only for the duration of the route.

Official website of city buses - http://npat.ru/gorodskie-marshruty, but we recommend using the Yandex.maps or Google apps to plan your trip.maps as well as 2GIS. Taxis in these applications are not fully represented, so they will have to use the help of local residents.

Metro

  • 🕐 opening hours: 05:15-00: 10
  • 🕐 traffic interval: 5-7 minutes during peak hours, 8-10 minutes the rest of the time.
  • 🎫 cost: 26/28 rubles

The fare does not depend on the duration and length of the trip, it is paid when passing through the turnstiles. Children under 7 years old are free of charge, for which you need to contact the staff on duty near the turnstiles, and they let the children through a separate passage.

Travel at turnstiles can be paid with a citicard transport card or a Moscow Troika (from 2021), a contactless bank card, or you can buy a one-time token at the cash desk or vending machines for cash. Tokens are dropped into a slot on the turnstile, after which the passage is unlocked.

The Metro consists of two lines: Avtozavodskaya and Sormovskaya. Unfortunately, for tourists, the Metro is mostly useless, because in the tourist area there is only one station "Gorkovskaya", which is located at the end of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street and on the very outskirts of the tourist area. You can get from the Kremlin to it on foot in 20-30 minutes along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya.

Another useful metro station for tourists is Moskovskaya. It is located next to the railway station of Nizhny Novgorod at the intersection of two metro lines. There is also a shopping center of the city with many supermarkets, shopping centers and markets. ie if you come to the city by train, the fastest and easiest way to get to the tourist area will be by Metro.

  • No. 2 - a circular route through the tourist area (center), crosses Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street
  • No. 27-railway station-Belinsky Street near the tourist area

There is also an interesting tourist tram along Rozhdestvenskaya Street. During the trip, the guide tells about the history of the city and the architecture of buildings on Rozhdestvenskaya Street. The fare+excursion – 150 rubles, the duration of the Route-50 minutes. But as of 2021, it is suspended, there is no information about the resumption.

Cable car

  • 🕐 opening hours: 06:45-21:00, technical break on Monday and Thursday 10:45-13:00
  • 🕐 movement interval: 1-2 minutes.
  • cost: 100 rubles one way / children 7-12 years-50 rubles / up to 7 years-free of charge.

By tourists the Nizhny Novgorod cable car is perceived more as an attraction or entertainment, but in fact it is an urban public transport. You can use it to get from the embankment to the center of Bor and back.

The cable car station is located next to Sennaya Square and the Sennaya bus station on Kazanskaya NAB., 8A near Bolshaya Pecherskaya Street (Station on the map). It is a little away from the tourist center, but the station can be reached by a large number of buses and trolleybuses to the stops "cable car" or "Sennaya Bus Station".

For more information, visit http://nnkd.ru/

Attention! On certain days of the year, the cable car may suspend work or reduce the mode. For example, at the beginning of 2021, it did not work on April 1 and 2, and worked for a short time during the New Year holidays. Before visiting, it is better to specify the mode of operation on the official website.

Car rental and car sharing

  • 🕐 working hours: around the clock
  • 🎫 cost: from 4000 rubles / day, from 8 rubles/minute

You can rent a car for daily rent in Nizhny Novgorod at the airport and in the offices of rental offices in the city. True, in our opinion, for a tourist stay in the city there is no great sense in such a lease, since most of the attractions in the tourist area of Nizhny Novgorod are still more convenient to explore on foot. In addition, there is a problem with parking, and most likely you will still have to walk.

Nevertheless, if you really need to rent a car for daily rent, it is better to do it via the Internet, and not look for a car in rental offices:

A good alternative to daily rent is a per-minute car rental or Delimobil carsharing. The cost depends on the chosen insurance option, time of day and car brand, and will be 8-12 rubles/minute. Of course, you will see the cost of a minute in the application before the rental begins.

In the Delimobil Park, mostly inexpensive foreign cars with automatic transmissions and several premium cars. In general, there are not very many cars, so it is better to look for a free car in advance. What is convenient, parking "Delimobil" is at the airport, so from here you can get by car to the center or vice versa, and then the trip will cost even cheaper than a taxi.

Requirements for drivers in Delimobil:

  • age from 19 years;
  • Driving experience from 1 year or more on the rights of Category B.

To start using carsharing, install the app on your smartphone (available for Android and in App Store), register and upload scans of documents and photos, link the card, and you can use it.
