General information

Semenov - a city in the Nizhny Novgorod region, 79 kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod on the Sanokhta River (Semenov on the map. The city was recognized in 1779, is the administrative center of the Semyonovsky urban district. The population is just over 24 thousand people. Semenov is a popular excursion tourist destination, but for a long stay by tourists is not very suitable.

A bit of history

The first mention in history of the city of Semenov dates back to 1644 — it was in this year that it was founded. Initially, the settlement was called Semenovskoye, and the Old Believers lived in it. The main occupation of the locals was the processing of wooden spoons, cups, trays and similar things, which were then sent to Nizhny Novgorod. This settlement (since 1717, the village) was considered the only place where wooden rosaries were made for Old Believers. Even today, a mixed Orthodox culture (a mixture of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Old Believers) is widespread among the population of the city.

Rest in Semenov

The tourist infrastructure here is not developed, it is not worth stopping even for one or two days for sightseeing, except for stopping along the way during the trip. There are only a couple of hotels in the city, in the center there are catering establishments and shops. As an entertainment or tourist center, Semenov is not developed, there is almost no entertainment for young people and children.

But this does not mean that the city is not interesting to tourists. There are several museums, cultural and tourist centers, which makes it attractive for sightseeing visits for one day. Basically, these are day trips from Nizhny Novgorod on tourist buses.

Here is one special attraction-the world-famous factory of khokhloma painting. It was in Semenov that the unique golden khokhloma style was born, and one of the most popular Russian souvenirs appeared – the painted semenovskaya matryoshka, which is distinguished by a yellow-red background and a bright variety of colors. The world's largest wooden matryoshka doll, consisting of 72 Dolls, was created at the semenovskaya factory. It was presented in 1970 at the Expo-70 exhibition in Tokyo, and since then this record has not been broken. Today, more than 60% of the factory's products are exported. During the excursion to the factory, they tell in detail and show the production technology, a master class is offered, a company store operates.

The atmosphere and ancient architecture of the city are also interesting. Here, new buildings in a modern style contrast with old houses and quiet streets. There are a lot of well-preserved buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries. There is even a historical pedestrian Lenin Street, where one of the most beautiful buildings of the city is located – the estate of I. A. Khanykin (now the military enlistment office), and next to the estate of G. A. Vitushkin (now the post office).

Sights of Semenov (briefly)

Among the significant cultural places, attention should be paid to the Temple in honor of All Saints, which is located on Gagarin Street. The historical and art museum will allow you to learn a lot of interesting information about the cultural component of this city, including all the data on the old kind of activity of the first inhabitants — the processing of wooden spoons, rosaries or cups.

Semenov is distinguished by its architecture, which has been preserved here since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the center and on the outskirts you can find traditional wooden two-story houses with carvings.

Most are familiar with the historical value of the khokhloma painting. The operating factory receives tourists and conducts tours of the museum and production. It contains wood products painted with artistic traditional elements of the settlement.

How to get to Semenov

The city of Semenov is located 69 kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod, and is easily accessible by bus, car or train. Most tourists come here as part of group excursions for one day from Nizhny Novgorod (from 700 rubles in a group tour, from 3000 rubles individual tour), but it will not be difficult to get here by public transport, and independently get acquainted with the sights of the town. Upon arrival in the city, you can reach any attraction on foot by bus or railway station.

• By car

  The journey by car takes about 1 hour. The route passes through the Bor bridge over the Volga, where large traffic jams often gather, especially on weekends.

• By train

  This is the fastest way, because the minute all traffic jams. • By bus

  It is inconvenient to get to Semenov by bus because of traffic jams, it is much more convenient and faster to go by train. However, from the bus station "Kanavinskaya", which is next to the railway station "Moskovsky" (Sovetskaya Street, 20A, station on the map), a bus leaves every hour from 8:00 to 19:00, an hour and a half on the way.
