Tourist information about the village of Makaryev and Makaryevsky monastery

Article and Section Navigation

Village Makarievo located on the Northern Bank of the Volga river, 120 kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod (Makaryev on the map. It is rarely visited by tourists as a separate tourist destination, in fact, and there is no infrastructure for this. But thanks to its main attraction, the Makaryevsky monastery, the village is very popular as an excursion place to visit for one day. In addition to the monastery, there are two small unusual museums and an ostrich farm.

How to get to Makarievo village and monastery

The monastery is so interesting and popular that in the summer it organizes excursions, and this is the easiest and most convenient way to get to it. There are bus and boat tours from the River Station (from May to September). The cost is from 1200 rubles by bus, from 4000 rubles by boat.

From Nizhny Novgorod to the monastery is 120 kilometers, by car you can get there in two ways:

  • The easiest way to get along the Northern Bank of the Volga is through the city of Bor to the village of Makaryevo, about 120 kilometers on the way. True, with this option you will lose the wonderful views of the monastery from the Volga, and the roads here are not very good.

  • Another option (not suitable in winter) is to drive along the southern coast to the city of Lyskovo to the ferry, and from there by ferry to the village (ferry to Lyskovo on the map). The car can be left near the crossing, or swim with it. You can, for example, come by car on one side of the Volga, and leave on the other. Ferries depart:

    • From Lyskovo to Makaryev: 06:15, 08:15, 12:15, 15:15, 18:15
    • From Makaryev to Lyskovo: 07:00, 09:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00

In autumn and spring, the number of Ferries is reduced to 3 per day. In winter, instead of a ferry, hovercraft run 3 times a day (suspended). The cost of the crossing: adults-110 rubles / children-55 / car - from 420.

In winter, there is also an ice crossing, i.e. you can drive a cash car directly along the road organized on the ice.

By public transport to the monastery can be reached through Lyskovo. First you need to get from Shcherbinki bus station or Kanavinskaya bus station to Lyskovo bus station (bus station in Lyskovo on the map). Buses depart approximately every hour, 1 hour and 45 minutes on the way, the cost starts from 200 rubles. From the bus station Lyskovo to the ferry will have to get a taxi.

  • Makaryevsky monastery

    Makaryevsky monastery

Trinity Makariev Zheltovodsky convent is located in the village of Makarievo, 100 kilometers from Nizhny Novgorod. It is located on the banks of the Volga, and at first glance it can rather be mistaken for a fortress or a Kremlin. And it really is a fortress, at least for some time the walls served precisely for protection. The view of it from the water is simply magnificent, so if possible, it is better to get to it through the city of Lyskovo by ferry, and then all its views will open to you. And going ashore, you can see the monastery in all its details. The scale of the monastery is amazing. For example, the perimeter of its walls is more than 800 meters, for comparison, the perimeter of the walls of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is 1400 meters.

But the monastery is popular not only because of its views, its history is also interesting, which can be learned in detail during excursions. Initially, the monastery was built in 1435, and as a male, but four years later it was burned by the Kazan Khan. It was rebuilt only in 1624. Then a fair was established here, all proceeds from which were given to the monastery. Temples were built on them and fortress walls were erected to protect the fair and the monastery, a city (now a village) was formed nearby.

In 1816 there was a strong fire, during which all the Fair buildings burned down, and the Fair was moved to Nizhny. In 1868, the monastery was closed, and in 1883 it resumed its existence as a women's monastery, which existed until Soviet times. Since 1927, its buildings were used as an orphanage, hospital, Technical School, and in 1991 it returned to the bosom of the church, the fortress walls and temples were restored.

Today, tourists can freely visit the territory of the monastery, if they wish to participate in services (at 8:30 and 16:00). Excursions are held for groups of tourists. Не удалось посетить во время весенних школьных каникул. Паром весной уже не ходит, а на машине по льду ехать опасно. Так и поехали обратно прокатавшись 200 километров.
