Beaches in Central Sochi

General information about Sochi beaches

As we have already mentioned in our guide to Sochi, the coastline of this resort city is the longest on the entire Black Sea coast, and according to various estimates is from 120 to 145 kilometers. And it is not surprising that along this stretch there is a huge variety of beaches and resorts, differing in equipment and comfort level, cleanliness and transparency of water, infrastructure and entertainment, etc. Obviously, choosing the perfect beach for you from more than a hundred on the entire coast is not easy, so we have prepared an overview of Sochi Resorts, which you can get acquainted with here. On this page we talk only about the beaches in the Central District of Sochi.

So, the beach line of the Central District of Sochi stretches for 8 kilometers. But despite the great length, a lot of beaches here are closed and inaccessible for free visits to vacationers. For example, part of the bank on the Right Bank of the Sochi River in the direction of the New Sochi microdistrict is occupied by the Sochi state Sanatorium and other sanatoriums. And on the right side of the river after the arboretum stretches a continuous chain of closed therapeutic beaches. We marked such closed sections of the coast on our interactive map of the center of Sochi.

That's how "beautiful" one of the sanatorium beaches looks

But this does not mean that ordinary mortals can not get ashore in these places. In fact, it is closed only for visiting from the outside, and they are not allowed there even for money. But if you certainly want to relax on one of the sanatorium beaches, you need to buy or get from the enterprise or trade union a ticket to such a sanatorium. You can pick up and buy vouchers to the Sochi sanatorium online on these sites:

There are no official paid beaches in Sochi, since in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation it is forbidden to charge a fee for access to the shore. All areas of the coast closed to public access have the status of therapeutic beaches, and only those living in the sanatoriums to which they belong are allowed to rest on them, and this corresponds to the legislation. However, the administration of some sanatoriums go to a little trick, and allow vacationers to their beach with a moan for a fee, officially charging it for the use of amenities on the shore. This is not a violation of the law, but it is also impossible to call such beaches paid.

All beaches in Central Sochi are pebbly with small to medium pebbles, there is also "concrete". There are no natural sandy beaches anywhere, only in places there is gray and almost black sand. Although sometimes they try to recreate the "bounty" with the help of imported yellow sand, this phenomenon is temporary, and usually such sandy beaches are quickly eroded by storms or just waves over time.

Therefore, if you read some online guides about the magnificent sandy beaches of Sochi, keep in mind that in most cases it will turn out that the information in them is unreliable. There, you can find information about fine yellow sand on the "Riviera", "Central", "Primorsky", "Chaika" or in Imereti, but it has long been untrue. As of 2021, we have not found a single full-fledged sandy beach in the whole of Greater Sochi.

The beach infrastructure in the center is very well developed, at least no worse than in Adler, Sirius or Lazarevsky. Sun beds and umbrellas are offered at a single price anywhere, there are VIP gazebos for rent. Changing rooms and showers are free, and there are even free toilets on the central beach promenade. What is good, rest here does not interfere with loud sellers of fast food and drinks.

Oddly enough, beach entertainment in Central Sochi is poorly represented. Catamarans, SUP-boards, banana rides and jet skis are offered for rent, but there are not many such dedicated places with entertainment, you will have to look for them along the shore.

Here are the prices for beach services in the center of Sochi for reference:

  • Rent a chaise longue-350 rubles / day.
  • Rent an umbrella-400 rubles / day.
  • Rent an umbrella+chaise longue-600 rubles / day.
  • Rent a mattress for a chaise longue-100 rubles/day.
  • Bungalow rental-4000 rubles / day.

And now let's talk about public and free beaches in Sochi, where anyone can relax:

City or Central Beach

Sochi city beach or Central, as the name implies, is located in the heart of the city (Beach on the map). It starts from the Sea station and stretches for almost one and a half kilometers to the outskirts of Sochi. The City Beach is divided into small sections, formally assigned to various hotels, sanatoriums and service areas, and each of these sections has its own name. These are the beaches Lighthouse, Primorsky, Maurice Therese, sanatorium Chernomorye (closed medical), Circus and others. And to be honest, just my head is spinning from this variety and names, which in fact for vacationers and tourists do not play any role. We will give a description of the City/Central center, and you can choose the most suitable place for you to rest on one and a half kilometers of the coast yourself on the spot.

So, the city beach of Sochi is the most developed and accessible. Wherever you are located in Central Sochi, you can reach it on foot or by bus, since almost all routes go here. The easiest way to go is to the Sea station, and then 5 minutes on foot, and you are on the beach.

The coast here every 50-100 meters is dotted with breakwaters, and, unfortunately, there is not a single long stretch for walking along the water's edge. Yes, even if there was one, it would still not be possible to walk comfortably, because there are pebbles everywhere, on which it is extremely inconvenient to walk. If you want to take a walk, you can do it along the embankment, which stretches almost the entire length of this beach. The promenade is very well maintained and pleasant, especially closer to the center. It houses cafes and restaurants, recreation areas, art objects, there is a sale of excursions and fast food. But what is good, unlike the embankments of other resorts in Sochi, completely at the mercy of merchants and chaotically studded with commercial outlets at every step, everything here is more thought out and well-groomed, a single style and intention is felt.

And now actually about the beach itself and the conditions of rest. We try to be objective, and therefore we can not call it clean and pleasant for recreation. The water here is far from the most transparent and clean, including due to the proximity of the port and urban wastewater discharged directly into the sea. The old concrete breakwaters of the Soviet period, as well as in some places rusty and concrete partitions between the beach sections, do not stand up to criticism. There are only pebbles on the shore. In previous years, sand was brought to some sites, but as of 2021, we did not notice such sites.

Fortunately, with the arrangement of the beach here is much better. There are sun beds and umbrellas, changing booths, rescuers work. And on the embankment closer to the center there is even a clean free toilet. If you do not want to sunbathe on the beach among the mass of vacationers, you can rent sun loungers in the zone of increased comfort on the embankment. These are specially equipped recreation areas with yellow sand and amenities, but you are allowed to stay there only if you pay for a chaise longue.

After 17 hours you can rent for half the price, and there are discounts when renting for large companies. If you do not want to pay for a chaise longue, then throughout the city beach, with the exception of officially announced therapeutic beaches, you can be placed free of charge on your towel or mattress, and no one will say a word to you. The only time you may be asked to move is if you clearly interfere with the location of sun loungers and umbrellas, or sit in the shade of an unpaid umbrella.

Riviera Beach

The Beach "Riviera" is a new beach area, which was updated recently, and now it is one of the best beaches in the center. It is located behind the largest Riviera amusement park in Sochi (Riviera Beach on the map), and to get here, you need to take or take city buses to the park Riviera stop and then walk 5 minutes on foot.

"Riviera" is a small beach, its length is about half a kilometer. On the right side, it ends with a high concrete wall, behind which there is a closed territory and the shore of the state sanatorium "Sochi".

This is a pebble beach with large and medium pebbles, and a dozen meters from the water there is a little gray sand. And here, finally, there are no concrete breakwaters, so spoiling the views. The water here is a little clearer and is considered cleaner than on the City Beach. Vacationers here, by the way, have always been less, although in the last year it has gained popularity.

At the entrance to the beach there is a new modern and free recreation area, and the beach itself has everything you need for comfort. The prices for renting sun loungers and umbrellas are exactly the same as on the central beach, and the use of showers and changing cabins is free.

Along the coast there is a small beautiful promenade, free of trade. There were several neat cafes and a rope amusement park.

Firefly Beach

"Firefly" is located a couple of kilometers from the center on the Right Bank of the Sochi River (Firefly Beach on the map). This very tiny stretch of Shore is the only public beach in this part of Sochi, and on both sides of it along the shore stretches a series of beaches closed to public access. So if you unfortunately settle in this part of the city, you will either have to go to other beaches, or go only to this one. To get on it, you will have to go through a rather steep and long descent Each time.

"Firefly" has a length of 200 meters, and on both sides is limited by fences, you can not go further along the shore. On this small plot there are sun beds and umbrellas, which are rented at a standard price for the center of Sochi, and there is also a small unpretentious cafe with high prices. On the shore there are small pebbles mixed with coarse gray sand.

Albatross Beach

This public City Beach is located even further from the city center in the New Sochi neighborhood (Albatros Beach on the map). It is hardly necessary to go here from the center to swim and sunbathe, but if you choose accommodation in this neighborhood, then you have one road to the sea – only here. Access to the "Albatros" is possible only from Politechnicheskaya Street, and from all other sides the beach is surrounded by fences and territories of closed sanatoriums.

Otherwise, this is the most ordinary Sochi beach with sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, pebbles on the shore and breakwaters. Sometimes there is even gray and yellowish sand, but it depends on the specific year, so you should not count on it. The infrastructure here is poorly developed, there is no entertainment.

Beaches Of Sanatoriums

As we mentioned at the beginning, there are many sanatoriums in Sochi that are closed to public access and have the status of medical resorts, including the summer residence of the president of the Russian Federation Bocharov Ruchey. You can get to them only by buying a ticket to the appropriate sanatorium, or on the vouchers of departmental trade unions, for example, the Ministry of internal affairs or the Ministry of Defense. In most cases, these beaches are well equipped, and you can use all the services and amenities on the beach free of charge upon presentation of a sanatorium card. Moreover, many of these sanatoriums are located on the first line and have access from the territory directly to the shore.

If you do not have the opportunity to get a ticket to Sochi sanatoriums at the place of work, then it can be purchased on these sites:
