Before rushing off to see the sights, let's figure out how to get around Pattaya without a tour bus. The city stretches along the coast, and many interesting places are outside its borders. But everything is doable if you know a few rules.
The main principle of independent travel in Pattaya is to combine transport. In the center, it's convenient to walk or take songthaews (shared taxis); for trips to attractions, it's better to take a taxi or rent a bike/car; and for Koh Larn Island — take the ferry. Let's break it all down:
Songthaews: routes, price and how not to overpay
Songthaews (often mistakenly called tuk-tuks) are pickup trucks with a covered back and two benches, similar to our minibuses. They run along the main streets without a fixed schedule but very frequently. Fare — 15–20 baht (approx. 0.45–0.6 USD) per ride within one area. In 2026, the price officially increased from 10 baht for the first time in many years.
How not to get on the wrong route and not overpay:
- Before boarding, ask the driver if they're going where you need. Name the area or a major landmark (e.g., "Jomtien", "Naklua", "Big C"), but never the hotel — otherwise they might take you as a taxi.
- If the vehicle is standing still and the driver is calling you over — it's a taxi, not a songthaew. The price will be from 100 baht.
- Get off by pressing the bell button in the back. Payment — to the driver through the window when exiting.
- Main transfer points: the dolphin roundabout (north) and the police booth on the border of Jomtien and Pratamnak (south).

Taxis and apps: when to call, how much to pay
Taxis in Pattaya are no longer a luxury but a necessity if you're going out of town or with kids. In Pattaya, the apps Grab, Bolt, Maxim and InDrive work. Uber does not. We use all of them ourselves: Grab — the most reliable and fastest, Bolt and Maxim — cheaper but fewer cars, InDrive — for long trips where you can suggest your own price.
- Minimum ride price through the app — from 60 baht (approx. 1.81 USD), but in reality it's more often 100–150 baht (approx. 4.53 USD) within the center.
- Ride between areas (e.g., from center to Jomtien) — from 200 baht (approx. 6.05 USD).
- To attractions (Nong Nooch, Sanctuary of Truth) — 300–400 baht (approx. 12.09 USD) one way.
- To Suvarnabhumi Airport — from 1200 baht (approx. 36.28 USD).
Important nuance: If you go to a remote park or show, calling a taxi back through the app might be problematic — requests may not be accepted. Then the price on the spot can skyrocket 1.5–2 times. Tip: arrange with the driver in advance to wait (it will cost +200–300 baht) or budget accordingly.
To order a taxi, you need internet. We recommend buying a local SIM card or eSIM — guide to communication in Thailand. Payment in cash at the end of the trip or by card in the app (Russian cards don't work, only international ones).
Renting a bike or car: pros and cons, prices, licenses
Renting a motorbike or car is a great way to get full freedom. But there are nuances.
Motorbike (scooter):
- Price: from 150–200 baht/day (approx. 6.05 USD) for a 125cc scooter, from 400 baht (approx. 12.09 USD) for a new 150cc one. Monthly rental — from 2500 baht (approx. 75.58 USD).
- License: by law you need category "A" and an international driving permit. In practice, they rarely ask for it when renting, but police stop riders often. Fine without a license — 1000–2000 baht (approx. 60.46 USD). More about licenses in Thailand.
- Deposit: often they ask to leave a passport or money (3000–5000 baht). This is risky — better to leave a copy of the passport and a cash deposit.
- Insurance: usually not included, you cover all damages yourself. We recommend getting travel insurance that covers active sports.
Advice from personal experience: We don't recommend renting a bike for beginners. Traffic in Pattaya is chaotic, left-hand drive, and local riders drive as they please. If you've never ridden a scooter — better not risk it, take taxis or tours.
Car:
- Price: from 600–800 baht/day (approx. 24.19 USD) for a small sedan, from 1000 baht (approx. 30.23 USD) for an SUV.
- License: international driving permit required.
- Deposit: international companies require a credit card (not debit). Local offices may take a cash deposit (5000–10000 baht). Russian cards don't work.
If you decide to rent a car, it's better to book in advance through aggregators like Discover Cars or Economy Bookings.

Ferry to Koh Larn: schedule and cost
Ferries to Koh Larn Island depart from Bali Hai Pier (next to Walking Street). Cost — 40 baht (approx. 1.21 USD) one way, travel time — 30–40 minutes.
Ferry schedule to Na Ban pier — the main route:
- From Pattaya: 07:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00, 18:30.
- From the island: 06:30, 07:30, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00, 18:00.
There are also trips to Tawaen pier — they run a little less frequently, check on site.
Ferries may depart earlier when full, so arrive 30–40 minutes before departure. The boat rocks quite a bit — if you're prone to seasickness, take some pills.

Top 7 attractions for independent visits
We've chosen seven places that give a complete picture of Pattaya — and that you can realistically see on your own without a guide. Each comes with instructions on how to get there and what to consider.
Sanctuary of Truth
A giant wooden structure on the seashore, covered in intricate carvings. This is not a museum but an active construction site that has been ongoing for decades. Inside, restoration work is constantly underway, so visits are in hard hats. The photos turn out fantastic.
How to get there on your own:
- By taxi: from the center — 100–150 baht (approx. 4.53 USD). Getting back is difficult, better arrange with the driver to wait (+200 baht).
- By songthaew: go to the Naklua area (north) via the dolphin roundabout, then transfer to a songthaew going along Naklua Road to Soi 12, and walk about 2 km to the sea. Takes a lot of time but is budget-friendly.

🕐 Opening hours: daily from 08:00 to 19:30.
💵 Entry fee: daytime ticket (until 17:00) — 500 baht (approx. 15.12 USD), evening with show — 700 baht (approx. 21.16 USD). Children under 140 cm free. Online tickets are often cheaper.

Pratamnak Hill and Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)
Two locations in one area — the main viewpoint of Pattaya and the 18-meter seated Buddha statue. Free entry, postcard-perfect views. Nearby — the famous PATTAYA CITY letters and a heart-shaped photo zone.
How to get there on your own:
- On foot: from Bali Hai Pier or Walking Street — about 2 km up the hill. The climb is gentle, about 25–30 minutes at a leisurely pace.
- By songthaew: take any route heading towards Jomtien, get off at the turn to the hill (ask the driver) and walk 500 meters. Cost — 15 baht.
- By taxi: from the center — 100–150 baht (approx. 4.53 USD).

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden
The largest botanical garden in Southeast Asia. Thousands of orchids, palms, cacti, as well as elephant shows and traditional Thai dances. The grounds are huge — plan for at least half a day.
How to get there on your own:
- By taxi: from the center — 300–400 baht (approx. 12.09 USD) one way. Getting back is difficult — arrange with the driver to wait (+300 baht) or take a tour with transfer.
- By rented bike/car: drive along Sukhumvit Road south, parking is free.
- By train: a budget but inconvenient option — to Suan Nong Nuch station, then walk 2 km.
From our experience, for Nong Nooch it's often cheaper to buy a tour with transfer than to take a taxi round-trip. But if you're in a car — feel free to plan a self-guided visit.

Monster Aquarium Pattaya
An indoor aquarium and zoo in northern Pattaya — a great option for family fun if you don't want to go far. Under one roof, there are fish tanks, a terrarium, enclosures with birds, predators, monkeys, and a petting zoo with farm animals. You can feed animals (food — 20 baht), have photos taken with birds and reptiles. Air-conditioned inside — a lifesaver from the heat. A visit with feeding will take 2–3 hours.
How to get there on your own:
- By taxi: from the center — 100–200 baht (approx. 6.05 USD) via apps (Grab, Bolt). Drive time — 10–15 minutes.
- By rented bike/car: free parking on site.

Walking Street in the evening
The legendary street you absolutely must visit, and more than once. After 6:00 PM, neon signs light up, music plays, street performers appear, and club promoters and bars with adult shows emerge. Ideal time for a walk with a camera, even with kids (but with kids it's better before 8:00 PM).
How to get there:
- On foot: from central Pattaya — 5–15 minutes.
- By songthaew: any route along Beach Road or Second Road will take you to Bali Hai Pier. From Jomtien, take any songthaew towards the center to the final stop, then a short walk.

Koh Larn Island
An island with turquoise water and white sand, half an hour away by ferry. The best beaches — Tawaen and Samae. On the island, there are cafes, sun lounger rentals (from 100 baht), and water activities.
How to get there:
- Ferry: from Bali Hai Pier, 40 baht (approx. 1.21 USD) one way. See schedule above.
- Speedboat: from 150–300 baht per person, 15–20 minutes, departs when full.
On the island, you can rent a bike (200–300 baht/day) or take songthaews (20–40 baht per ride).
Our advice: Arrive on the morning ferry (by 9–10 AM) to get the best spots on the beach. By 2 PM, it gets very crowded. Don't forget sunscreen and water — prices on the island are higher.

Khao Kheow Zoo (for those ready to go far)
If you're willing to spend a whole day and aren't afraid of long trips — Khao Kheow Zoo will give you unforgettable impressions. This is a huge open-air safari park where animals live in spacious enclosures. You can hand-feed giraffes and deer, see the famous dwarf hippo Moo Deng, watch elephant and penguin shows. The grounds are divided into walking and driving zones — without your own transport, you'll only see part of it.
How to get there on your own:
- By taxi: 500–700 baht (approx. 21.16 USD) one way. Getting back is difficult, better arrange with the driver to wait (+300–500 baht).
- By rented car/bike: about 45 minutes drive from the center, free parking.
- Tour: often cheaper than independent travel as it includes transfer.
Practical information

Ready-made itineraries for independent trips
Now that we've figured out transport and the main attractions, let's put them together into logical routes. Choose according to your pace and budget.
Route #1. Center + Pratamnak Hill (walking/songthaew)
Time: 5–6 hours (including a stroll along Walking Street in the evening). Transport: walking or songthaew (15–20 baht if you don't want to walk).
- Start at Big Buddha Temple — climb Wat Phra Yai hill (on foot from Bali Hai Pier — 30 minutes, or by songthaew to the turn). See the 18-meter statue and views of the city.
- Move to the neighboring Pratamnak Hill — there's the main viewpoint with postcard views.
- Go down to the PATTAYA CITY letters — take a photo with the heart against the city backdrop.
- From there, you can go down to the lighthouse on the shore and walk along the promenade, reaching Central Pattaya or Royal Garden Plaza malls.
- In the evening, visit Walking Street — you can just walk around or join the fun.
This route is ideal for one day — you'll see the main "postcard" spots without spending a baht on taxis.
Route #2. Northern trip: Sanctuary of Truth + Monster Aquarium (songthaew/taxi)
Time: 4–5 hours. Transport: songthaew (15–20 baht) or taxi (100–150 baht one way).
- In the morning, get to the Sanctuary of Truth (by songthaew to Naklua, then walk, or by taxi).
- By taxi (100–200 baht via app, 10–15 minutes drive) to Monster Aquarium — an indoor aquarium and zoo in the northern part of the city.
- In the evening, you can stop by Terminal 21 (on the way back) — have dinner at the food court and take a photo by the airplane. Sometimes there's a night market near Terminal 21, and if not, you can walk to Runway Street Night Market or Soho Market — they're nearby.
Transport tip: If you're taking a songthaew, remember that after 7:00 PM they operate as taxis. Plan to return to the center before that, or budget for a taxi back.
Route #3. Countryside trip: Nong Nooch + Wat Yan + Buddha Mountain (taxi/rental)
Time: full day (6–8 hours). Transport: only taxi (400–500 baht each way) or car/bike rental.
- Nong Nooch — arrive by 10 AM, explore the gardens, watch the shows (check the schedule on site).
- After lunch, go to Wat Yan temple (20 km from Nong Nooch) — free, white stupa and lotus lake.
- On the way back, stop by Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan) — giant Buddha image on a cliff, free.
We think this is one of the best routes for independent travel: you'll see a park, temples, and nature. But without a rental car or taxi — no way. If there are two or three of you, a taxi for the whole day with waiting will cost about 1500–2000 baht (approx. 60.46 USD), which is cheaper than three separate tours.
Route #4. Island day: Koh Larn by ferry
Time: 6–8 hours. Transport: ferry 40 baht there, 40 baht back.
- Arrive at Bali Hai Pier by 9:30 AM to catch the 10:00 AM ferry.
- On the island, choose Tawaen beach (most popular) or Samae (more touristy but cleaner). All beaches are free.
- Rent a sun lounger (100 baht), swim, have lunch at a beachfront cafe.
- Return ferry — at 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM (check the schedule).
If you want more freedom, you can rent a bike on the island (200 baht) and visit several beaches in one day.
Important: Ferries run on schedule but may depart early when full. Don't be late for the return trip — there's no accommodation for mainland tourists on the island (unless you plan to stay overnight).
Useful tips for independent travelers
- Start your day early. In Pattaya, heat sets in by 10 AM, and most attractions close at 5–6 PM. Leave by 8–9 AM to see as much as possible.
- Bring water and a hat. Water in parks costs 2–3 times more than at 7-Eleven. Dehydration in the tropics is no joke.
- Dress code at temples. Shoulders and knees must be covered for everyone, including children. If you forget — they may give you a wrap at the entrance for a symbolic fee (20–50 baht).
- Always carry cash. In songthaews, markets, small cafes, and parking lots, cards are not accepted. Keep 500–1000 baht in small bills with you.
- Download offline maps — Organic Maps or Maps.me. Download the map of Thailand in advance to avoid relying on internet. Save Pattaya attraction points from our interactive map.
- Don't be afraid to bargain. At markets and with taxi drivers (if you hail on the street), haggling is appropriate. Knock 20–30% off the quoted price.
- Insurance is mandatory. Even if you're just walking around. Get a policy that covers active recreation, especially if you plan to ride a bike or do water activities. More about insurance in Thailand.
