Satun (Satun) – province in the south Thailand on the border with Malaysia. The capital of the province is the city of Satun. The name translates from Malay as "wild mangosteen" or exotic fruit Santol. The city of Satun is located 950 kilometers from Bangkok and only 15 kilometers from the border with Malaysia (Satun on the map of Thailand). The population of the city is just over 25,000 people.
Before being incorporated into Siam (present-day Thailand) in 1909, the province was part of Kedah State in Malaysia, and therefore today it is one of the four southern provinces of Thailand, where Muslims predominate. At the same time, it is also one of the hot spots of Thailand, where separatist sentiments are present, but to a much lesser extent than in other southern provinces.
Until recently, Satun province and its capital were practically ignored by tourists and were used only as a transshipment point on the way from Thailand to Malaysia. In particular, high-speed ferries depart from here to the Malay island of Langkawi. But in recent years, among the most desperate travelers of the island, the beaches and attractions of the province have become popular as a new, little-known tourist destination. This is a popular island Ko Lipe, National Park and Tarutao Island, Ko Bulon Leh, Ko Adang, Ko Rawai Islands.
As for the city itself, there is practically nothing to do here. The only attractions here are the monkey park, the central mosque Mambang Mosque (by the way, one of the largest in Thailand) and the night market. Also in the city center at Satun Thani Soi 5 is the local local history museum Ku Den Museum. Admission costs 20 baht, open from 8:30 to 4:30 from Wednesday to Sunday. For a provincial, this is a very good museum.
