General Info About Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe Island in Thailand (also Ko Lipe) is located in the southern Andaman Sea, in Satun Province (Koh Lipe on the map of Thailand). It's the southernmost inhabited island in Thailand and, in our opinion, the most difficult to reach and the most expensive. On a clear day, you can see the Malaysian Langkawi archipelago, just 30 kilometers away. The island is tiny – only 3 kilometers from one end to the other. The permanent population is around 800 people, but there are significantly more tourists here. The island's inhabitants trace their roots back to Malaysian sea gypsies who arrived over a hundred years ago.

Koh Lipe is part of the Tarutao National Marine Park, the second largest in Thailand, established in 1974. It's the only island in the national park where construction is permitted, which is why tourism is so developed here. You'll have to pay a fee of 200 baht (about 6 USD) upon arrival at the ports – this is the entrance fee to the national park. Payment is accepted in cash in baht or foreign currency (at least Malaysian ringgit, though at a very poor rate).

Vacation on Koh Lipe: Why Go and Is It Worth It?

Koh Lipe is a kind of benchmark for a perfect 'Bounty-style' beach vacation in Thailand, often called the 'Thai Maldives'. And it's definitely the most remote, most exotic, and probably the most expensive resort in Thailand.

Why You Should Definitely Visit Koh Lipe

  • It's still a relatively rare and exotic place, with fewer tourists than Phuket or Samui.
  • There's a special atmosphere of freedom and minimal control – you feel like a true explorer.
  • The crowd – seasoned travelers from all over the world create a pleasant, low-key social vibe.
  • The island is incredibly photogenic: white sand, turquoise water – one of the most beautiful spots in Thailand.
  • At the same time, the infrastructure is very well developed: there are cafes, shops, ATMs, travel agencies.
  • Excellent conditions for diving and snorkeling – the underwater world of Tarutao National Park is impressive.
  • Compactness: you can walk anywhere, no transport needed.

There aren't too many tourists here yet, as the place hasn't been spoiled by mass package tourism, although it's becoming more developed and crowded in peak season every year. So the main reason tourists come here is for a relaxing beach vacation. People also often come to Koh Lipe to explore underwater life, both scuba diving and just snorkeling. There are many small islands in the national park nearby, which you can visit on a day tour for snorkeling or diving, or even live on one 'wild' in a tent at the equipped campsites. Another activity is fishing – almost a quarter of all tropical fish species in the world inhabit the waters around the island. However, fishing is officially prohibited and carries serious penalties. You can rent kayaks and SUPs. You can also hire a long-tail boat as a taxi to visit neighboring islands or remote, hard-to-reach beaches, or just for a sea trip.

Koh Lipe has many bars and restaurants, including some right on the beach. Places for watching the sunset are especially popular. Spending time in bars and restaurants is the main evening activity on the island; luckily, there are no discos or nightclubs here yet. There are no sights on the island besides its beaches, nature, and a small Buddhist temple.

Pros and Cons of a Vacation on Koh Lipe: Who Should Go?

  • Pros:

    • Beautiful nature, 'Bounty' beaches.
    • Developed infrastructure despite the compact size.
    • Opportunities for active recreation (diving, snorkeling, kayaking).
    • Unique atmosphere and an international crowd.
  • Cons:

    • Very expensive by Thai standards (prices are 20–50% higher than on the mainland).
    • Difficult and time-consuming to reach (transfers + ferry).
    • Many tourists in peak season (streets and hotels are crowded, the sense of seclusion disappears).
    • Narrow streets with noisy motorized rickshaws – walking isn't always comfortable or safe.
  • Who Probably Won't Enjoy Koh Lipe:

    • Fans of all-inclusive package tours (it's a completely different format here).
    • Families with small children (infrastructure isn't stroller-friendly, many inconveniences).
    • Ultra-budget travelers (even hostels here cost as much as hotels in other resorts).
    • Those who don't speak at least basic English (communicating with locals will be difficult).
    • Travelers with little experience in independent trips (getting there and finding your way around can be challenging).

What Beaches Are on Koh Lipe

We can put it simply about Koh Lipe beaches – they're super 🌴 But, as usual, there are some nuances. We'll explain now.

The three biggest and most famous beaches are Pattaya, Sunrise, and Sunset. Actually, Sunset is a beach without hotels, just bars there. So, if you're choosing where to stay, you'll most often have to choose between Pattaya and Sunrise. There are also other, smaller beaches attached to hotels. Or rather, hotels with their own beaches. But that doesn't mean they're closed – anyone can come, relax, and swim there.

And also, there are wild, 'secret' beaches on Lipe. You can reach them by kayak, boat, or on foot via trails. They'll definitely appeal to those who want some solitude or just to explore the island all the way to its farthest point.

All beaches on Koh Lipe are free and open to the public. Some can be a bit tricky to access due to hotel grounds, but there's always a way around – along the shore. Infrastructure is mostly basic, but the essentials are there. On Pattaya and Sunrise, loungers and umbrellas are placed by hotels and cafes – you can use them for free if you order some food or drinks. There are no water activities like banana boats or jet skis here, but you can rent a kayak or SUP almost everywhere, and it's easy to hire a water taxi anywhere.

We showed and told everything about Koh Lipe beaches in great detail in the video above, and here's a text overview with map points and tips on how to get to each one:

  • Pattaya Beach

Pattaya Beach — the island's main and most lively beach
    Cafes, loungers, umbrellas are here
    And, of course, cool girls

This is the main beach on Koh Lipe, the longest (about a kilometer), and located in the most lively part of the island (Pattaya Beach on map). Walking Street opens directly onto the beach – there are tons of exchange booths, shops, markets, dive centers, and travel agencies, in short, everything a tourist needs. Boats from Langkawi and the mainland also arrive here, making it a transport hub and the island's entry point.

The sand is white, the water is clear, but the muddy seabed can make it slightly murky in places. The seabed slope is comfortable – swimming is good at both high and low tide. There's infrastructure on the beach: cafes and restaurants have loungers, umbrellas, beach chairs – usually free if you order something. In the evening, bars with music are open. There are many boats, but swimming areas are marked with buoys.

  • Sunrise Beach / Castaway Beach

Sunrise has great white sand and pretty girls
The beach is very beautiful and reasonably well-equipped
From Sunrise, you get a great view of Ko Adang

This beach is on the opposite side of the island, a 5–10 minute walk from Pattaya (Sunrise Beach on map). The area here is much quieter and nicer for a beach vacation, resembling a village – no hustle and bustle, just relaxation and peace. In our opinion, this is the best beach on Lipe, especially its left half. The white sand is magnificent here.

The name speaks for itself – it's a great place to watch the sunrise, one of the main tourist activities on the island. And on the left edge, there's a sandy spit (Ko Lipe Northern Point) where you can watch the sunset. The water is perfectly clear, with a view of the large island Ko Adang, and several rocky islets and an excellent reef for snorkeling and diving lie just offshore. You can easily paddle to the islets by kayak (rentals available). There's also a water taxi station here for trips to neighboring islands.

At high tide, the strip of sand can be narrow, but if you walk along the shore, you'll always find a spot. At low tide, the water recedes far, so you have to walk out further.

  • Sunset Beach

    Sunset Beach
One of the bars on Sunset with a lounge area right by the water
    Sunset

The main sunset beach, a 10-20 minute walk from Walking Street (Sunset Beach on map). There are no hotels here – just a few bars and restaurants right on the beach and one resort of bungalows on the hillside (Bayview Sunset Resort). Swimming conditions are excellent at both high and low tide, plenty of shade, few people. There are a couple of bars, and some of the cheapest on the island – Happy Mojito: mojito for 100 baht, beer 50/90 baht. On the left side, there are very atmospheric bars with seating right by the water, serving cocktails, beer, and food with music. The left part of the beach ends at a cliff – you can climb it to watch the sunset.

The downside – mosquitoes attack immediately after sunset. Spray or repellent is a must.

  • Ao Ta Lo So Beach (Taloso)

Ao Ta Lo So Beach — cozy and quiet, five minutes from the action

A cozy beach on the north side, between Sunrise and Sunset (Ao Ta Lo So on map). It's a 5–10 minute walk from Walking Street. There are several hotels with their own grounds here, and you access the beach through the grounds of Ten Moons Sunset Villas. A good option if you want to stay at a hotel with its own beach while being just five minutes from the tourist street. You can freely walk onto the beach from the side.

  • Su Ta Beach

Su Ta Beach — the first in a chain of wild beaches, secluded but with some trash

A 15-minute walk away, but looks abandoned (Su Ta Beach on map). This is the start of a chain of wild beaches along the northwest coast for almost a kilometer. A place for those seeking solitude – and it's not far from civilization at all. Nearby is an abandoned bungalow complex with a pool. The beach itself is small, about 80 meters. There's some trash on the shore, but generally okay. Caution: the path leads through a forest with monkeys (they might steal things), and the descent is via a ruined wooden staircase. On the right side of the beach, behind the rocks, you can find seclusion and sunbathe topless. There's shade, and you can snorkel. There are large rocks in the water and on the shore.

  • Izumi Beach (Talo Izumi / Aya Beach Resort)

Izumi Beach — a well-kept hotel area, but you can walk through

Located further along the coast from Suta, this is the territory of the Aya Beach Resort (Talo Izumi on map). The beach is tiny, well-kept, with umbrellas, loungers, a toilet, and a cafe – but all only for guests. You can pass through from the side, but there's not much point: there are plenty of similar places nearby where you can relax like a wildling.

  • Ao Ta Lo Pi La Beach (Casa De Lipe Resort)

Talo Pi La Beach — another hotel beach, well-kept but for guests

Another tiny hotel beach further along the coast, belonging to Casa De Lipe Resort (Ao Ta Lo Pi La on map). Same story: umbrellas, loungers, toilet, and cafe only for guests. You can walk through from the side if you want, but there's not much point.

  • Wild Beaches on the Northwest Coast (Izumi Beach)

A chain of wild coves on the northwest coast — for complete seclusion

If you go further past the previous beaches, you'll reach a chain of rocky coves (Izumi Beach and wild beaches on map). On maps, this area is often labeled Izumi Beach. You can get here along the shore over the rocks, by water, or via trails through the forest. A place for total solitude – nothing more. You can swim, but there are rocks underwater. There's even a grotto and a spot for a tent; sometimes local fishermen stay here, although it's against national park rules.

  • Wild Beaches on the Southwest Coast (Ao Kwam Lup, Ao Ta Lo Po Yo, Pantai Galah)

Pantai Galah — one of three wild beaches on the southwest coast, almost tourist-free

Three cozy wild beaches: Ao Kwam Lup, Ao Ta Lo Po Yo, and Ao Ka La, also known as Pantai Galah Beach (Pantai Galah and neighboring coves on map). It's about 2.5 km from Walking Street via unmarked trails, or you can rent a kayak or water taxi on Pattaya Beach. All three are connected by a trail along the shore, making it easy to move between them. Ideal for those who love quiet, 'secret' spots – there are no crowds here, only rare seekers. There's some trash on the shore, but the water is clean. Plenty of shade, clear water, good snorkeling. Grab your mask and go.

Life hack for wild beaches: Buy a cooler bag, ice, drinks, and ready-to-eat food at the local supermarket – and have a picnic with a sea view. A full-on beach day, just without the neighbors and much cheaper. And don't forget a mat (you can buy a travel mat at the market on the main street) for lounging comfortably on the sand.

Important note about monkeys: There are monkeys living in the forests on Koh Lipe. If you're heading to the wild beaches, don't leave your things unattended on the shore. It's best to clip or tie your backpacks to trees or rocks – this will protect them from 'monkey theft.' The little thieves are after food and water and might just snatch a whole small backpack. Be careful and read our article 'How to Behave Around Monkeys: Safety Measures'.

Infrastructure on Koh Lipe, Prices, and How Things Work

Koh Lipe can't be called a developed modern resort; it's more like a tourist village. At least half of the island's area, fortunately, is still uninhabited and covered in forest. The residential and tourist zone is located in the eastern part of the island, on the right side of the map. There are just a few streets here, and the main tourist one is the pedestrian Walking Street (Walking Street on map).

On Walking Street you'll find everything
And in the evening, it's also the liveliest spot

But don't think Koh Lipe is some deep wilderness with nothing but a couple of shops and cafes. Quite the opposite – the development and density of tourist infrastructure here are surprising. You can find absolutely everything you'd find on larger, more famous islands, just on a smaller scale and more compact. You can easily find an ATM, currency exchange, souvenir shops, markets with clothes and travel gear, a post office, a pharmacy, and travel agencies selling tours, excursions, and tickets almost anywhere. There are two 7/11 stores and several other local supermarkets, with an even wider selection of goods than the famous 7/11, and lower prices. The island even has its own transport system of 'motorized rickshaws' with fixed official prices, but more on that below.

Lipe even has an international hospital

But everything here is quite expensive. In our experience, prices for almost everything are about 20% higher than on the mainland, and some things are noticeably more expensive. But the biggest expense will be accommodation, as hotel and guesthouse prices here are simply record-breaking by Thai standards. At least, we haven't seen such high prices anywhere else, and we've visited almost every corner of the country.

How Much Does a Vacation Cost: Main Expenses and Prices

  • Island entrance fee (national park access) – 200 baht / 6 USD
  • Surcharge for diving in the national park (neighboring islands and waters) – 200 baht / 6 USD
  • Dorm bed in a hostel with fan – from 400 baht / 12 USD
  • Cheapest double room with fan – from 1300 baht / 39 USD
  • Inexpensive comfortable hotel room with A/C and breakfast – from 2500 baht / 75.01 USD
  • Local SIM card (sold at a markup) – 199 baht/3 days (5.97 USD), 599 baht/8 days (17.97 USD).
  • Local motorized rickshaw ride – 50 baht/person (1.5 USD), 150 baht for luggage.
  • Snorkeling mask rental – 100 baht / 3 USD
  • Massage 1 hour – 300 baht / 9 USD
  • Full-day snorkeling and neighboring island tours – 600 baht / 18 USD
  • Diving – from 2800 baht / 84.01 USD
  • Kayak rental – 150 baht/hour (4.5 USD), 500 baht/day (15 USD)
  • Beer in a supermarket – from 70 baht / 2.1 USD
  • Beer in a cafe – minimum price 90 baht (2.7 USD), usually 120 baht and up (3.6 USD).
  • Mojito cocktail – from 100 baht / 3 USD
  • One dish in a non-touristy cafe based on rice or pad thai – from 80 baht / 2.4 USD
  • Fresh tuna per 1kg – from 300 baht / 9 USD
  • A meal with seafood, beer or another drink in a touristy cafe – from 300 baht / 9 USD
  • Laundry service per 1 kg – 60 baht / 1.8 USD

But it's important to note that these are the minimum prices we came across on the island. If you don't actively seek out the lowest prices, your expenses will be about 20-50% higher.

Given these rates, a more or less comfortable day of vacation on Lipe, excluding hotel and activities, just for hotel-beach-cafe-bar style, will cost no less than 1000 baht/person (30 USD). If you want to relax and not deny yourself much, you should plan on from 3000 baht/person (90.01 USD).

Exotic fruit prices on Koh Lipe are sometimes even higher than in Russian supermarkets on sale

Money, Currency Exchange, and ATMs on Koh Lipe

There are many exchange offices like this on Koh Lipe

Cash is mainly used on Koh Lipe, although cards are accepted in many places, including Russian UnionPay cards. You can pay by card for accommodation in some hotels and guesthouses (but it's better to check in advance), in almost all local supermarkets, in many cafes and restaurants, and even in small shops. The problem is that local businesses pass the acquiring costs on to customers, so almost everywhere, an extra 3-5% will be added to the card payment amount. For example, if you eat at a restaurant for 300 baht and decide to pay by card, the actual bill will be 309-315 baht. No commission is added only in fancy tourist restaurants (where everything is already expensive and included) and in local supermarkets.

You can withdraw money from an ATM. ATMs are available here, including a Krungsri bank ATM right in the arrival area on the shore (the local conditional international port) if you're arriving from Langkawi and need local currency to pay the island entrance fee, which is cash only. The ATM withdrawal fee here is the same as on the mainland – 200-220 baht per transaction. This means it's better to withdraw larger sums at once to minimize losses from this fee. There will also be a conversion and withdrawal fee from your bank, which you can only find out by checking your specific card's terms. If you have a UnionPay card, read about its profitability and calculations in the articles via the links:

Local exchange offices also offer cash withdrawals from your card via payment. That is, you make a payment transaction in the terminal as a purchase, and they give you cash in baht. In this case, you don't pay the ATM fee or your bank's fee, but the exchange offices also deduct 5% for the transaction. It's impossible to say definitively which option is cheaper, withdrawal from an ATM or this type of cash advance, as it depends on the amount and your bank's fees, but amounts under 4000 baht are definitely cheaper this way than using an ATM. However, we only found one place that accepts UnionPay cards for cash advances, and it's not guaranteed they'll be working during your trip, so consider this option only as a backup.

If you prefer using cash, you can easily exchange dollars, euros, yuan, and some other currencies here. There are many exchange offices; we visited and compared rates at almost all of them. The best rate was ultimately at an exchange office on the main Walking Street, just a few dozen meters from the main entrance to the street from the beach. But in any case, it's worth walking around and comparing rates at neighboring exchange offices, as there are many. Here are the numbers at one point in time:

  • Official exchange rate – 31.08 baht/dollar.
  • Rate at the famous Superrich exchange in Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport – 31 baht/dollar.
  • Rate at an exchange office on Koh Lipe – 30 baht/dollar.

As you can see, the difference compared to even the best rate in Bangkok is not huge, only 3.2%, so if you're arriving from Langkawi, it's better to exchange cash for baht here, not in Malaysia. If you're getting to Koh Lipe from the Thai mainland, it's more profitable to exchange currency on the mainland.

If you do decide to exchange money on the island, regarding which currency to bring to Koh Lipe, we recommend dollars, euros, or yuan. The difference between them is small; here are the numbers compared to the official exchange rate at that moment:

Comparison of exchange rates on Koh Lipe Island with the official rate (which currency is best)
Currency Island Rate Official Rate Difference
US Dollars 30.00 31.08 3.47%
Euros 35.64 37.13 4.12%
Chinese Yuan 4.16 4.46 6.72%

Where and What to Eat

Dishes in a cafe on Koh Lipe

Like anywhere in Thailand, finding a place to eat on Lipe is not a problem, but prices are noticeably higher than on the mainland. Even in stores, products, prepared foods, and drinks are more expensive. As we noted above, in our experience, 20-50% more expensive, and we gave specific prices above.

There are many establishments of various types and price levels, from street food and budget options (by local standards, of course) to very expensive restaurants on the beaches where the check for the simplest dish starts at several hundred baht. So there's plenty to choose from.

Street food on Koh Lipe also exists
Seafood prices

You won't have any trouble finding expensive restaurants; they are on every corner. But if you need to eat on a budget, the choice is small. We visited many cafes and ended up eating several times at a decent cafe called Thaidurm Restaurant. We can recommend it, and they accept cards (with a +3% fee). But it's not the only place that can be recommended as inexpensive. The further you go from the shore towards the center of the island, the lower the prices. Unfortunately, the streets here have practically no names, but if you go along Walking Street inland, you'll hit a perpendicular street with many establishments where you can get pad thai from 80 baht and rice with seafood from 120 baht.

The inexpensive cafe Thaidurm is always full and sometimes has queues

If you need a place to sit with a beer or other alcohol on the shore, we can recommend an excellent spot for sunsets called 'Happy Mojito', where beer is sold for only 90 baht and a Mojito cocktail for 100 baht. This is a very low price for Lipe Island.

Mojito with a sunset view on Koh Lipe

Finally, if you're on a really tight budget, you can buy prepared meals or other products at local supermarkets for lunch or breakfast. You can buy and heat up a dish there. There is a 7-eleven here, but look for larger local stores instead:

  • Market (just an economy store with the sign 'Market'). The largest store, located on the street next to Ricci House Resort, to the left of it.
  • Patt Market. Located right on Walking Street. Prices here are a bit higher than at the economy store, but lower than at 7-eleven, and the selection is better. There are benches with tables in front of the store where you can sit, have a beer, or eat what you bought and heated up.

SIM Cards and Internet on Koh Lipe

SIM card sales on Koh Lipe

Wi-Fi in local hotels is available but works just okay. At least, we stayed in two hotels here, and in both, the Wi-Fi was so-so; sometimes we had to go to the common area near reception to get the internet to work a little.

If you're traveling around Thailand, it's cheaper to buy a local SIM card on the mainland at stores like 7-eleven, Family Mart, Tesco Lotus, or Tops, or at official outlets. Even if you buy a tourist SIM at the airport or from a street travel agency, it will be cheaper than on Koh Lipe. We have all the necessary instructions on this, you can read and choose what suits you best:

If you're arriving on Koh Lipe from Langkawi, Malaysia, you can buy a SIM card on the island at agencies on the main Walking Street; you can see SIM card prices with plans in the photos above and below. Vendors in different shops and stalls display signs with SIM card prices and plans; you can choose any suitable one based on price, duration, and traffic/minutes. The operator isn't crucial here.

More SIM card prices at another spot on Koh Lipe

Finally, you can buy an e-sim, including paying with Russian cards, and then you won't have to look for a physical SIM on the spot. If your device doesn't support e-sim, you can purchase an e-sim adapter on Russian marketplaces or in stores. You can buy online here:

Hotels on Koh Lipe: Where to Stay

The island has hotels of various categories, but prices are very high by Thai standards. Honestly, even by Russian standards, they are very expensive. During the peak tourist season, a dorm bed for two in a hostel will cost as much as a room in a 'four-star' or 'five-star' hotel in Phuket, for example. In general, you should be prepared for this price range:

  • A room for two with the most basic amenities and air conditioning – from 1300 baht/night (39 USD)
  • A good room with air conditioning, private bathroom, pool on site, and breakfast – from 2500 baht/night (75.01 USD)

But these are minimum prices that you still need to be able to get, as everything inexpensive is booked at least a month in advance.

Budget room: cozy and clean, but very expensive

We stayed in two hotels on Koh Lipe; you can watch their video reviews to get an idea of the price level and what you get for it:

If you're on a really tight budget, you could try arriving on the island and finding cheaper accommodation on the spot. However, during the high season, there's a risk of finding no vacancies at all, so we recommend booking at least the first night in advance. During peak season (January-February), we barely managed to book a couple of inexpensive options a month before our trip, and not for all the nights we needed, and only at non-refundable rates.

Note about hotels: There are no large multi-story hotels on Koh Lipe. All accommodation is either individual bungalows or small houses with a few rooms. There are also full-fledged resorts with their own grounds, pools, restaurants, and beach access. So the atmosphere here is as close to nature as possible.

You can book hotels on Koh Lipe with online or on-site payment on these trusted sites:

Regarding the choice of location for a hotel, this issue isn't critical, as the island is very small. Still, here are a few tips:

  • If you want to relax on your own beach in a good hotel, just choose options based on reviews, descriptions, and your wallet.
  • If you need budget accommodation, it's easier to find it in the very center on Walking Street or on Sunrise Beach.
  • Keep in mind that on Sunrise Beach, it's very noisy on the first line in the mornings because tourists gather there to watch the sunrise.
  • The most developed area and beach is Pattaya Beach. Choose it if you want to be in the thick of things, but as a swimming beach, it's not the best.

In total, there are three main beaches on Koh Lipe. The most popular and developed is Pattaya. Sunrise is calmer but the best. Sunset is suitable for relaxing on the shore and watching sunsets, but not so great for accommodation. All beaches here are excellent, and the island is so small that you can walk from beach to beach.

Weather on Koh Lipe by Month: When Is the Best Time to Go?

You can visit Lipe Island at any time of the year, but there are low and high seasons.

The high season and most favorable time is from November to May. The peak tourist influx is during New Year and the Thai New Year, Songkran, in April.

The low season (rainy season) falls from May to October. You can still visit the island during this time, but the weather isn't as good, and rain is possible. Also, during the low season, the number of ferry services from the mainland decreases, and transfers on some routes are suspended altogether. Most hotels close for renovations or holidays during the low season.

How to Get to Koh Lipe

The only way to get to Koh Lipe is by water on ferries like these

Koh Lipe Island in Thailand is one of the most remote and hard-to-reach resorts: there's no airport, you can only get there by boats from resorts in southern Thailand (Phuket, Krabi, Satun, Hat Yai, Lanta, etc.) and from Langkawi Island in Malaysia. Here's the primary information you need when planning your trip:

  • 🚢 Getting ashore – you'll be transferred from the ferry to small long-tail boats, luggage is delivered separately. Keep valuables and documents with you.
  • ❄️ It's very cold on the ferries – the air conditioning is cranked up to the max, be sure to bring a hoodie or windbreaker.
  • 🔐 Documents and entry: if you're sailing from Langkawi (Malaysia), fill out the electronic Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) in advance on the official website. There is full passport control on the island itself – passports are collected back in Malaysia and given back before landing.
  • 💳 Cash on arrival – upon arrival, you need to pay the entrance fee to Tarutao National Park: 200 baht (or 35 ringgit) per person. Bring cash without change, keep the receipt – you may be asked for it when visiting other parts of the park.
  • 📅 Buying tickets: on the Langkawi – Koh Lipe route, it's cheaper to buy tickets online – on Trip.com (accepts Russian cards) or on 12go.asia (you can pay in cash at 7-Eleven). From Thai resorts, it's convenient to take ready-made transfers from street agencies or at the hotel reception.
  • 💳 ATM at the pier exists, but it's better to have a minimum of cash, as the ATM fee is 220 baht plus your bank's fee, and the machine might not work.

How to Get from Thailand: Ferries and Ready-Made Transfers

The main flow of ferries departs from Pak Bara Pier in Satun Province. Boats from here run several times a day, travel time 1.5–2 hours, ticket price from 550 baht (16.5 USD) one way.

In practice, it's much more convenient to buy a ready-made transfer from popular resorts: they'll pick you up from your hotel, take you to the pier, and put you on the ferry. Such transfers are offered from Phuket, Krabi (Ao Nang), Lanta, Phi Phi, Samui islands, and also directly from Hat Yai Airport. Approximate prices (round trip, depending on the season):

  • from Phuket – from 1750 baht (52.51 USD)
  • from Koh Lanta – from 1750 baht (52.51 USD)
  • from Koh Phi Phi – from 1950 baht (58.51 USD)
  • from Hat Yai Airport – ready-made transfer with ferry from 800 baht (24 USD)

All routes and exact schedules are in the full article about How to Get to Koh Lipe.

Route via Malaysia: Langkawi – Koh Lipe

This is an international route, so besides tickets, you need to consider visa formalities. Ferries run from two piers on Langkawi (Telaga Harbour and Kuah Jetty) to two piers on Koh Lipe (Pattaya Beach and Bundhaya). Travel time 1.5–2 hours, one-way ticket costs about 160 ringgit (39.2 USD). Buying online is usually cheaper than at the port ticket offices.

You can get to Langkawi by plane from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or other cities. There are no direct flights from Russia to Langkawi yet, but there are convenient connections via Dubai, Doha, or Kuala Lumpur. We detail all flight options in the separate guide on Langkawi.

Important: upon arrival on Koh Lipe, you need to go through passport control and pay the national park entrance fee (200 baht/35 ringgit in cash). You won't be let through without the TDAC immigration card – fill it out in advance.

How to Get from Russia: Best Routes

It's impossible to fly directly to Koh Lipe, so plan your route with one or two stopovers. The most convenient options:

  • ✈️ Via Thailand: fly into Phuket, Bangkok, or Hat Yai, then take a ready-made transfer to the island. You can also spend a couple of days relaxing in Phuket or Bangkok.
  • ✈️ Via Malaysia: fly into Kuala Lumpur, then a domestic flight to Langkawi and a ferry to Koh Lipe. This route is often faster and cheaper if you catch flight deals.

Round-trip tickets from Moscow to Phuket or Kuala Lumpur can currently be found from 50-60 thousand rubles. Keep an eye on prices on aggregators.

Transport on the Island, How to Get Around

There is no public transport on Koh Lipe, and you cannot rent a vehicle. You can get around on foot or by moto-taxi. You can travel around the island by water taxi from beach to beach.

Walking on Koh Lipe: convenient, practical, and free

The local moto-taxi consists of motorcycles with a sidecar attached for transporting passengers or cargo. It's hard to call them comfortable, but if you really don't want to walk, you can hire them for trips between beaches. They are also convenient for hiring for trips from the pier to the hotel or back with luggage. Their prices are regulated and officially set, so there's no point in haggling or looking for cheaper ones:

  • 50 baht per person to anywhere on the island
  • 150 baht for luggage delivery
  • 400 baht/hour for hiring by time to drive around the island.

That said, you won't be able to get everywhere by them, as the roads here are bad. To get to some beaches, you'll inevitably have to walk, or better yet, hire a boat.

This is the main transport on Koh Lipe

As for water taxis, boats can be used not only on Koh Lipe itself but also hired for trips to neighboring islands in the archipelago. The cost of a trip between beaches is 50-150 baht/person, to neighboring islands from 1500 baht for a round-trip tour or 150 baht/person one way. The cheapest way to hire a boat for a tour to neighboring islands is on Sunrise Beach; there is a permanent departure point there.

Water taxi is also convenient, but more expensive

Finally, another way to get around on Koh Lipe is to rent transport. You can rent a motorbike here, despite some guides claiming otherwise. There are no large street rental shops, but some private individuals and travel agencies offer rentals. However, the prices are high by Thai standards – we were offered one for 300 baht/day. Maybe you can negotiate, but we didn't bother and didn't rent one at all, as in our opinion, motorbikes are useless here.

You can also rent kayaks to paddle to wild beaches or the nearest islets. Not the big islands, they are too far for a kayak, but the small rocky islets a few hundred meters offshore. Kayak rental costs:

  • 1 hour – 150 baht
  • 2 hours – 250 baht
  • Half day – 300 baht
  • Full day (until 6 pm) – 500 baht
You can reach wild beaches by kayak

Sights on Koh Lipe, What to See and Do

There are essentially no sights on Koh Lipe in the usual sense. Honestly, a vacation here revolves around 'doing nothing' on the beaches and by the pool, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do at all. There are plenty of tourist activities here that will make spending a few days, or even a whole week, engaging and fun.

On Koh Lipe, you can buy excursions just as easily as in more popular Thai resorts. Just go to the main Walking Street, and you'll find tons of travel agencies offering everything from group tours for 500 baht to islands and snorkeling, to plane tickets.

If you prefer to buy online, that's also possible. The same excursions, from group to private, are available on the Trip.com website, and you can pay for them with a Russian card 💳.

Top 6 Must-Do Activities on Koh Lipe

  • Explore the wild beaches — find your own secluded spot on the northwest or southwest coast.
  • Go on a snorkeling tour to the neighboring islands — see the underwater world of the national park.
  • Rent a kayak and paddle to the nearest rocky islets.
  • Watch the sunrise at Sunrise Beach and bid farewell to the sun at Sunset Beach with a cocktail or beer.
  • Try the freshest seafood at local restaurants.
  • Relax in bars right on the beach with a sea view — for example, at Happy Mojito.

Below we've gathered all the main sights and activities on Koh Lipe with detailed descriptions, which will help you plan your time on the island enjoyably and interestingly:

  • Wild Beaches of Koh Lipe

One of the secluded beaches on Koh Lipe

In addition to the three main beaches on Lipe's shores, and on neighboring islets, there are plenty of secluded wild beaches you can visit for relaxation. Besides the solitude, it's also an engaging activity in itself – searching for a wild, less-touristy beach that most tourists don't reach.

As for beaches on neighboring islands, you can visit them with group boat tours, but that won't be a secluded experience. To make it more interesting, you can hire a boat for your group (from 2000 baht) and go to a beach where groups aren't taken, for example, by picking one out on a map or asking the boatmen for advice. You can paddle to the nearest rocky islets, Kla Island or Ko Usen, in a rented kayak. As for the secret beaches on Koh Lipe itself, on its western side, you can reach them on foot via roads and trails through the forest or along the shore, hire a boat, or paddle a rented kayak. We walked to almost all the 'secret' beaches on Lipe and talked about it in the beach descriptions above and in our video.

Naturally, these are the best places to do this. You can watch the sunset with music and a cocktail or beer in hand, which is especially pleasant on Sunset Beach at the Happy Mojito cafe or another cafe nearby: beer there is from 90 baht, mojito from 100 baht.

  • Kayak and SUP Rentals

    Kayak rental on Sunrise Beach

Kayak and SUP rentals are one of the few water activities available on Koh Lipe independently. Kayaks are better for paddling, while SUP boards are more of a coastal pastime. With kayaks, you can paddle to neighboring islands, secret wild beaches, or even circumnavigate all of Koh Lipe. But exercise common sense: paddling to faraway islands like Ko Adang is not very safe. It's quite far (about 30-60 minutes one way), and can be dangerous in bad weather and strong currents.

    Practical Information

🕐 Opening hours: from morning until 6:00 PM.

💵 Entrance fee / ticket price: kayak rental from 150 baht/hour, up to 500 baht per day.

🚶 How to get there: kayaks and boards are available for rent on all three beaches, but for paddling to neighboring islets, it's most convenient to rent them right on Sunrise Beach – there's a large rental point roughly in the middle of the beach (rental point on map). But it's not the only place.

  • Snorkeling

    Snorkeling in Koh Lipe waters

The waters of the national park surrounding Koh Lipe are rich in diverse marine life. You can see all this beauty during group boat tours or by hiring a long-tail boat privately. But even without a tour, you can see plenty of beautiful things in the coastal waters. Just bring your own mask and snorkel or rent one for 100 baht, rent a kayak, and go... You could even skip the kayak and just walk to one of the 'secret' beaches we described above.

    Practical Information

🕐 Opening hours: during daylight hours.

💵 Entrance fee / ticket price: independently – free, group tours – from 500 baht, private boat rental – from 1500 baht.

💵 Entrance fee / ticket price: uncertified dive (Fun dive) – from 2800 baht.

  • Island Tours (Island Hopping)

At this spot on Sunrise Beach, you can hire a boat for a tour

Island Hopping or Snorkeling Trip tours are the most popular excursion on Koh Lipe. During the tours, they'll take you by boat to several islands of Tarutao National Park, drop you off on the shore to relax on the beach, feed you lunch, and take you to snorkeling spots with an incredible variety of marine life that you won't see snorkeling independently near the shore. The cost of full-day tours includes lunch and equipment; half-day tours may not include lunch.

    Practical Information

🕐 Opening hours: tours start on schedule in the morning around 9:00 AM and in the afternoon around 1:00 PM. The full schedule is available from excursion sellers.

    💵 Entrance fee / ticket price: half-day tour – from 500 baht, full-day tour – from 700 baht.

🚶 How to get there: excursions can be found at street travel agencies on the main Walking Street (Walking Street on map), on the beaches, and in hotels. They are offered in abundance; you'll just need to compare prices, conditions, and choose. You can also hire a boat and buy a tour at the kayak and boat rental point on Sunrise Beach (rental point on map).

  • Events on Koh Lipe (DJs, Thai Boxing, etc.)

Party with fire show on Koh Lipe beach

Various entertainment events are constantly held on the island. For example, there are parties on the beaches with invited DJs and fire shows, and themed chill-out bars operate. Thai boxing matches take place about once a week on the island. So you won't get bored; the main thing is to keep an eye on their schedules, as these events happen in different places on the island and not every day.

    Practical Information

🕐 Opening hours: events happen several times a week in different locations. There is no single stable schedule; you just need to keep an eye out for information while walking around (announcements on posts, info boards, near travel agencies).

💵 Entrance fee / ticket price: depends on the event.

🚶 How to get there: wherever the event is held, you can easily reach it on foot, as the island is small. Muay Thai fights are held on Saturdays at the Bonus Resort hotel.
