Koh Lipe Beaches: Which Beach to Choose for the Perfect Vacation?

Article and section navigation

Koh Lipe is often called the "Thai Maldives" – and the main reason, of course, is its beaches. White sand, turquoise water, and a total feeling of paradise. We've been to the island several times, explored every meter of the coastline, and now we know exactly which beach is best for parties, where to watch the sunrise, and where to go for complete seclusion. In this post, we'll compare all of Koh Lipe's beaches, honestly share the pros and cons, and help you choose your perfect spot.

The main treasure of Koh Lipe is its beaches

Comparing the Main Beaches: Pattaya, Sunrise, Sunset

Koh Lipe has three main beaches, and they're about 10–15 minutes apart on foot. But the vibe is completely different. We've put together the key details in a table so you can immediately see where you need to go.

Koh Lipe Beach Comparison
Beach Sand Water Entry Infrastructure Vibe Best For
Pattaya White, fine, some small stones Gentle slope, easy, but a bit murky at low tide Maximum: cafes, bars, shops, loungers, gear rental Lively, party-central, heart of the action Youth, party lovers, those who want everything close by
Sunrise Snow-white, perfect Gentle slope, but you need to walk out far at low tide Good: cafes, bars, kayak rental, massage Peaceful, relaxed, scenic Couples, families with kids, snorkeling and kayaking fans
Sunset Light, but some rocks near the shore Good at both high and low tide, some shade Minimal: a couple of bars, one restaurant, loungers at them Tranquil, romantic, for sunsets Beautiful sunset lovers, couples, introverts

In our experience, there's no one perfect beach for everyone — choose based on your travel style. Now, let's dive into the details.

  • Pattaya Beach — The Main Hangout

Pattaya is always bustling and lively

This is the longest beach (about a kilometer) and the main party hub of the island. Ferries from the mainland and Langkawi dock here, and the Walking Street opens right onto the shore with all its attractions: exchange booths, 7-Eleven, dive centers, bars, and restaurants. The sand is white, the water is clear, but there can be a bit of murkiness after rains due to the seabed. Swimming is comfortable, and swimming areas are marked with buoys so boats don't bother you. In the evening, the beach turns into a string of bars with music and fire shows.

✔ Pros: developed infrastructure, lots of cafes and shops, lively atmosphere, free loungers with orders, nice view, easy to find tours.
❌ Cons: noisy, crowded, packed in peak season, water can be a bit murky, expensive hotels on the front line.

We found Pattaya a bit too hectic, but if you want to be in the center of it all and don't mind the noise, this is your spot.

  • Sunrise Beach — Our Favorite

Sunrise — the perfect spot for morning coffee with a view

Sunrise is on the opposite side of the island, a 5–10 minute walk from Pattaya. It's much quieter and more peaceful here, with a vibe reminiscent of a fishing village. The sand is snow-white, the water is crystal clear, and the beach offers a stunning view of the neighboring Ko Adang Island and rocky islets with reefs. This is the best place to catch the sunrise (hence the name). The left part of the beach turns into a sand spit – the northernmost point of the island, also great for sunset views.

Infrastructure is decent too: there are cafes, bars, massage shops, and kayak and SUP rentals. You can grab a mask and snorkel right from the shore. There's also a water taxi station, making it easy to join tours or head to wild beaches. At low tide, the water recedes far out, but that's fine – you just need to walk a bit.

✔ Pros: beautiful view, clean sand, peaceful, good snorkeling, kayaks available, sunrises, Walking Street is a 10-minute walk away.
❌ Cons: a bit narrow at high tide, fewer restaurants than Pattaya, the morning sunrise attracts a crowd.

In our opinion, this is the best beach on Koh Lipe for those who appreciate comfort, beautiful scenery, and don't want to be completely cut off from civilization. We'd stay here ourselves.

  • Sunset Beach — For Romantics

An evening cocktail at Sunset is a must

Sunset is the smallest of the three, located on the western side. There are no hotels here (just one resort on the hillside), but there are several super atmospheric bars right on the sand, with cushions and low tables. The main event is watching the sunset with a cocktail or beer. We especially loved the Happy Mojito bar: mojitos are only 100 baht, beer from 90. During the day, the beach is uncrowded, there's shade from the trees, and swimming is comfortable. After sunset, we recommend heading out quickly – mosquitoes come out in force, so repellent is a must.

✔ Pros: best sunsets on the island, affordable bar prices, secluded, some shade.
❌ Cons: minimal infrastructure, mosquitoes after sunset, not much going on if you're not at a bar.

Sunset is the perfect way to end the day. But we wouldn't want to live there: it's too far from shops and doesn't have its own hotel beach.

⭐ Reviews and map of Sunset Beach

  • Beaches Between Sunrise and Sunset: Ao Ta Lo So, Izumi, and Others

On the northern coast, between Sunrise and Sunset, there are several small cozy beaches belonging to hotels, but anyone can walk there. The cutest is Ao Ta Lo So (the beach of the Ten Moons hotel). It's clean, well-maintained, with loungers and a cafe, but mostly for guests. Still, you can sit on the sand for free. Further on, if you take a trail through the forest, you'll come across a series of wild beaches: Suta (abandoned, some trash), Izumi (territory of the Aya hotel), Ta Lo Pi La (Casa De Lipe hotel). They're not particularly remarkable, but if you want seclusion, this is the place.

Izumi Beach — a well-kept hotel area, but you can walk through
Ta Lo Pi La Beach — another hotel beach, well-kept but for guests
A chain of wild coves on the northwest coast — for complete seclusion

The southwestern wild beaches (Pantai Galah, Ao Kwam Lup, Ao Ta Lo Po Yo), however, are worth the effort to find. There are almost no people, clear water, great snorkeling, and a complete Robinson Crusoe vibe. You can get there on foot (about 2.5 km from Walking Street along unmarked trails) or by kayak. Bring food, water, and a mat – an ideal picnic spot.

Pantai Galah — one of three wild beaches on the southwest coast, almost tourist-free
Another wild beach: rocky, but no one will bother you here
At wild Ao Ka La you can relax, swim, and snorkel

Life hack for wild beaches: Buy a cooler bag, ice, drinks, and ready-to-eat food at the supermarket – and have a picnic with a sea view. A full-on beach day, just without the neighbors and much cheaper. And don't forget a mat (you can buy a travel mat at the market on the main street) for lounging comfortably on the sand.

Important note about monkeys: There are monkeys living in the forests on Koh Lipe. If you're heading to the wild beaches, don't leave your things unattended on the shore. It's best to clip or tie your backpacks to trees or rocks – this will protect them from "monkey theft." The little thieves are after food and water and might just snatch a whole small backpack.

The Verdict: Which Beach on Koh Lipe is Best?

We've covered all the options and are ready to give our final verdict:

  • For parties, nightlife, and maximum convenience – choose Pattaya Beach. Everything is close by, it's lively and fun, but be prepared for crowds and high accommodation prices.
  • For a relaxing beach vacation, beautiful photos, and sunrises – our clear choice is Sunrise Beach. The best balance between nature and infrastructure.
  • For romantic sunsets and cocktails on the sand – head to Sunset Beach. You probably wouldn't want to live there, but spending a couple of evenings is a must.
  • For solitude and wild nature – go to the southwestern beaches (Pantai Galah and its neighbors) or grab a kayak and explore the northwestern coves.

And if it's your first time on Koh Lipe and you want a bit of everything – we suggest splitting your stay: spend a couple of days on Pattaya, then move to Sunrise. And definitely set aside time for the wild beaches – they're worth it.

Hotels on Koh Lipe: Where to Stay on Your Chosen Beach

Decided which beach suits you best? Great! Now it's time to find a hotel so you can wake up with a view of your favorite beach. Koh Lipe has plenty of accommodation options – from modest bungalows to comfortable resorts. We've gathered key information about prices and hotel features on different beaches.

Accommodation Prices in High Season

On the island, prices are above the Thai average. During peak season (January–February), budget options are booked a month in advance. Here are the numbers to expect:

  • Double room with air conditioning and basic amenities – from 1300 baht/night (39.76 USD).
  • Hotel with pool, breakfast, and private bathroom – from 2500 baht/night (76.45 USD).

Which Beach to Choose for Staying?

  • Pattaya Beach: almost all hotels are on the front line or a couple of minutes' walk away, maximum concentration of cafes and bars. Ideal for party lovers, but be prepared for noise and high prices.
  • Sunrise Beach: here there are many cozy bungalows and hotels with grounds and private beach access. An excellent choice for couples and families who value peace and beautiful sunrises.
  • Sunset Beach: there are almost no permanent hotels on the beach itself (only one on the cliff), but you can stay within walking distance and come here every evening for sunset.
  • Wild beaches: no accommodation, only hotels in rare coves (e.g., on Ao Ta Lo So) – an option for those seeking seclusion within walking distance of civilization.
Budget room: cozy and clean, but very expensive

We stayed in two hotels on Koh Lipe – you can watch the video reviews to get an idea of the price level and what you get for it:

Note about hotels: There are no large multi-story hotels on Koh Lipe. All accommodation is either individual bungalows or small houses with a few rooms. There are also full-fledged resorts with their own grounds, pools, restaurants, and beach access. So the atmosphere here is as close to nature as possible.

Many hotels on Lipe have a pool

Practical Tips for Beach Time on Koh Lipe

  • Loungers: On Pattaya and Sunrise, they're usually free if you order something from a cafe. On Sunset, they're only at the bars.
  • Snorkeling: Best near the islets opposite Sunrise (paddle there by kayak) or during an island tour. You can rent a mask for 100 baht/day.
  • Kayaks: Rentals on all beaches, prices – 150 baht/hour, 500 baht/day. Go in the morning to have time to circle the island or paddle to the nearby rocks.
  • Food and water: Prices on the beaches are higher than inland. To save money, buy snacks at supermarkets (Patt Market or the unnamed market) and bring them with you.
  • Sunset at Sunset: Arrive at least half an hour early to grab the best spots at the bar. And don't forget insect repellent.
  • Sunrise at Sunrise: Check the sunrise time (usually 5:40–6:20 AM) and bring a flashlight – it's easy to trip over rocks in the dark.
A 100 baht mojito at Happy Mojito – the best way to bid farewell to the sun
