Koh Lipe is called the "Thai Maldives." It sounds like a dream: white sand, turquoise water, palm trees. But when it comes to crunching the numbers, the dream can sometimes cause a bit of a shock. In our eyes, the island has firmly cemented its status as Thailand's most expensive resort. But don't panic just yet: if you know the real figures and some tricks, your vacation can be perfectly budget-friendly. In this article, we've broken down all the expenses: from a cup of coffee to a night in a hotel.
Overall Price Level on Koh Lipe: 20–50% More Expensive Than the Mainland
If you've read our Thailand guide, you know: islands are almost always more expensive than the mainland. But Lipe breaks all records. In our experience, the average bill here is higher than in Phuket, Samui, or even Koh Tao. It's simple: remoteness, logistics, and high demand do their thing. Here's a little spoiler:
- Budget fan room — from 1300 baht (39.76 USD)
- Lunch at a simple cafe — from 200 baht (6.12 USD)
- Bottle of water in a store — 15 baht instead of 7 on the mainland
But don't panic just yet: with smart planning, you can keep it within reasonable limits. We'll show you where prices bite and where you can find loopholes.
Accommodation on Koh Lipe: 2026 Prices
Hotels and guesthouses are the biggest expense. Locals have long understood that tourists are willing to pay for the chance to live by the sea. Here's the current breakdown:
| Type of Accommodation | Price per night (baht) | Price per night (rubles)** |
|---|---|---|
| Dorm bed in hostel (shared room, fan) | 400–600 | 12.23–18.35 |
| Cheapest double room with fan and shared bathroom | 1300–1500 | 39.76–345.87 |
| Inexpensive air-con room with private bathroom (guesthouse) | 1800–2500 | 55.05–76.45 |
| 3* hotel with pool and breakfast (mid-range) | 3000–4500 | 91.74–138 |
| Beachfront bungalow (Pattaya / Sunrise) | 5000–10000+ | 153–306 |

Important point: during peak season (January–February), you need to book at least a month in advance. We barely found available dates a month before our trip in January-February, and we had to split our stay between two hotels because there were no vacancies in one place. And those were (as shown in the videos) non-refundable rates. So if you want to save money, plan ahead or come during the low season from May to October.
Food Prices: Cafes, Street Food, Supermarkets
Food is the second biggest expense. Here, like in any tourist spot, you can find both budget options and restaurants with astronomical bills. We visited many places and put together a price map.
Cafes and Restaurants
- Street food (roti, satay skewers) — from 40 baht. You'll need 2-4 portions to satisfy your hunger).
- Rice with chicken or Pad Thai at a simple cafe (e.g., Thaidurm Restaurant) — 80–100 baht.
- Tom Yum with shrimp — from 250 baht (we didn't find it cheaper).
- Fresh grilled fish or seafood dishes — from 300 baht per serving.
- Breakfast (omelet, toast, coffee) — 120–180 baht.
- Cappuccino — 60–90 baht.
- Freshly squeezed juice — 80–100 baht.
Cafes on the beaches have higher prices, you pay extra for the amazing views. But there's a great bar called Happy Mojito, where a Mojito cocktail is 100 baht, and beer is from 90 baht. That's super cheap!!! Watching the sunset with a 90 baht beer is our favorite evening activity.
Supermarkets and Shops
Prices at 7-Eleven and local markets are also higher than on the mainland. Here are average costs:
- Water 1.5L — 15–20 baht.
- Coke 0.5L — 20–25 baht.
- Chang beer in a bottle — 70–80 baht (at 7/11), at the local Market — 65 baht.
- Yogurt — 25–35 baht.
- Fruit: mango (1 kg) — from 100 baht, dragon fruit — from 100 baht, bananas — 65 baht.
- Ready meals from 7-eleven (heat them in the microwave) — 50–80 baht.
Tip: Look for the local supermarket Market (not to be confused with 7/11) — it's located near the Ricci House Resort, and it has the lowest prices on the island. The second option is Patt Market on Walking Street, also cheaper than 7/11.
Transport: Getting There and Getting Around
Getting to Koh Lipe is a budget item in itself. Planes don't fly there, only ferries. And the prices, to put it mildly, aren't cheap.
Ferries and Transfers
- Ferry from Pak Bara Pier (mainland) — 550–700 baht one way (depending on the season).
- Combo transfer from Phuket (bus + ferry) — from 1750 baht round trip.
- From Koh Lanta — from 1750 baht.
- From Koh Phi Phi — from 1950 baht.
- From Hat Yai Airport — from 800 baht.
- Ferry from Langkawi (Malaysia) — about 160 ringgit (approximately 1300 baht) one way.
It's better to buy tickets online: on Trip.com (accepts Russian cards) or on 12go.asia. At the port ticket offices, it might be more expensive, and seats aren't always available if you buy just before departure.
Local Transport
On Lipe itself, you get around on foot, by moto-taxi, or by water taxi. Prices are fixed:
- Moto-taxi (tuk-tuk style) — 50 baht per person for any trip on the island. Luggage — 150 baht extra.
- Water taxi between beaches — 50–150 baht/person.
- Kayak rental — 150 baht/hour, 500 baht/day.
- SUP board rental — roughly the same prices.
Renting a motorbike is theoretically possible (we were offered one for 300 baht/day), but there's little point: the island is small, the roads are terrible, and you can't get everywhere on one anyway.
Activities: Snorkeling, Diving, Tours
Active leisure on Lipe is mainly about the sea. Here's how much fun costs:
- Mask and snorkel rental — 100 baht/day.
- Snorkeling tour to nearby islands (half day) — from 500 baht.
- Full-day tour with lunch — 700–1000 baht.
- Private boat (up to 6 people) for the whole day — from 2000 baht (negotiable).
- Diving: Try Dive (Fun dive) — from 2800 baht.
- Open Water course (certification) — 12000–15000 baht.
- Massage (1 hour) — from 300 baht (Thai), oil — 350–400.
- Thai boxing fights (Saturdays at Bonus Resort) — entry 500–800 baht.
If you're coming for a week, be sure to budget for a couple of excursions. The underwater world of Tarutao National Park is incredible!
Extra Costs: National Park Fee, SIM Cards, Currency Exchange
Little things that can quietly eat into your budget:
- Tarutao National Park entrance fee — 200 baht per person (paid in cash upon arrival by all tourists, no exceptions). If you're coming from Langkawi, you can pay 35 ringgit.
- Additional fee for diving in the national park — another 200 baht (if you plan to dive).
- SIM card — prices on the island are steep: 199 baht for 3 days, 599 for 8 days. It's better to buy one in advance on the mainland or get an eSIM. We use eSIM from Trip.com — convenient and no hunting needed.
- Currency exchange — the rate on the island is slightly worse than in Bangkok, but bearable. It's better to exchange dollars or euros. Yuan is exchanged with a big markup (see table).
| Currency | Island Rate | Official Rate | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Dollar (USD) | 30.2 | 31.5 | 4.1% |
| Euro (EUR) | 35.8 | 37.4 | 4.3% |
| Chinese Yuan (CNY) | 4.1 | 4.5 | 8.9% |
Daily and Weekly Budget: Sample Calculations
Let's figure out the minimum amount of money you need per person per day (excluding hotel):
- Breakfast (coffee + toast/omelet from a street stall or your own supplies) — 80–100 baht.
- Lunch (Pad Thai + water) — 100–120 baht.
- Dinner (main dish + beer or soda) — 200–300 baht.
- Water, snacks, fruit — 200 baht.
- Transport (if not walking) — 50–100 baht.
- Beach activities and amenities (mask, lounger – free if you order food) — 0–100 baht.
Total: 580–920 baht/day. And this is in strict economy mode. If you add an excursion (700 baht) or dinner at a decent restaurant (500 baht), the amount can easily rise to 1500–2000 baht per day.
Now including the hotel. The most modest option (room 1300 baht for two + food 580x2=1160 baht) = 2460 baht/day for two, or 1230 baht per person. This is the minimum. A comfortable vacation with air conditioning, excursions, and cocktails — from 3000 baht/person per day.
Sample one-week budget for two:
- Economy: hotel 1300×7 = 9100 baht, food 1160×7 = 8120 baht, 1 excursion = 1400 baht. Total ~ 18,620 baht (569 USD).
- Mid-range: hotel 2500×7 = 17,500 baht, food 2000×7 = 14,000 baht, 2 excursions = 3000 baht, transport/activities = 2000 baht. Total ~ 36,500 baht (1116 USD).
How to Save Money on Koh Lipe: Tips from Experience
- Book accommodation in advance. 2–3 months ahead, prices are lower and choices are better. This is especially true for budget guesthouses.
- Buy food at local supermarkets (Market, Patt Market) and cook for yourself if possible. Some budget hotels have a communal kitchen or at least a shared fridge, and you can save a lot with a simple travel kettle, check out how to save on breakfasts in hotels in our video.
- Drink at Happy Mojito on Sunset Beach — they have the cheapest beer (90 baht) and mojitos (100 baht). Elsewhere, beer costs 120–150 baht.
- Carry water from the store — on the beach, it's twice as expensive.
- Don't exchange yuan — the rate is extortionate. Bring dollars or euros. Even better, exchange them in advance in Bangkok or Phuket.
- Use cash — paying by card often incurs a 3–5% fee.
- Walk — the island is small; it takes 10–15 minutes to walk from Pattaya to Sunrise. Save on taxis.
- Compare tour prices at different agencies — there are dozens on Walking Street; you can try to haggle.
