Description and Is It Worth Visiting

Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan) – 130-meter image of Buddha laser-engraved on the cliff

Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan) is one of the most unusual attractions near Pattaya. A giant image of a seated Buddha, 130 meters high and 70 meters wide, is engraved on a vertical cliff face. This monument was created in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reign of King Rama IX Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The execution technology is impressive: the image was cut into the cliff using lasers, and then the lines were filled with gold. Laser engraving of such precision and scale is a unique engineering solution. The image wasn't carved by hand, but precisely cut by a beam, which made it possible to achieve perfect lines even on the uneven surface of the cliff. When you stand at the foot, the scale of the work is truly impressive – the Buddha towers over you by several dozen meters. Despite being a modern creation (not an ancient statue), it looks imposing and fits organically into the surrounding landscape.

Around the mountain, there's a well-maintained park with gardens and ponds, looked after by the Royal Thai Marine Corps. The area is clean and green, pleasant for a walk. There's a cafe and souvenir shops at the parking lot near the mountain. Opposite the mountain, there's a small temple with an altar and a Buddha statue – you can stop by if you wish.

It's especially beautiful here at sunset – when the sun sets below the horizon, the cliff with the golden image is bathed in warm light, and the scene becomes almost mystical. During the day, it's also nice, but hot and crowded. The best time to visit is early morning or sunset. During these hours, the light is soft, and the golden Buddha figure literally glows against the sky. During the day, it's hot and there are many tourists.

Exploring and taking photos will take no more than 10–15 minutes. But if you have time, you can simply walk around the park, sit by the pond, and an hour will pass by unnoticed.

Is it worth going specifically? Buddha Mountain is an interesting place, but in our opinion, it's not worth driving here specifically from Pattaya. It's best to visit it on the way, as part of a route through the southern outskirts of Pattaya – for example, together with the Heaven and Hell Temple or the Na Ja Chinese Temple. Then the trip will be worthwhile, and you won't spend half a day just for one attraction.

🚶 How to Get There

Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan) is located approximately 20 km south of Pattaya, near the town of Si Racha (Buddha Mountain on the map). Travel time from central Pattaya is about 30–40 minutes by bike or taxi.

You can only get here by taxi, rented car, or bike. Public transport does not go here. The mountain is also included in many sightseeing tours of the southern outskirts of Pattaya – this is the easiest option if you don't plan to rent a vehicle. There is free parking for cars and bikes on the premises.
