Online, you often hear that Pattaya isn't good for beach vacations. That's an exaggeration. Pattaya has wonderful, clean, long beaches that are well-maintained and constantly improving — sand is regularly replenished. The only real issue is that the water isn't very clear. But it's important to understand: murky water ≠ dirty water. We're talking about sediment of sand, silt, and clay, not sewage. With the right season and beach choice, you can have a great vacation in Pattaya, whether solo or with family.

Seasons in Pattaya by month, when it's best to go

Most beaches in Pattaya are well-equipped. There are sunbeds with umbrellas and tables for rent — from 100-200 baht (5.94 USD) per set for the whole day, in low season or with haggling you can get two for 200. For hotel guests on private beaches (Naklua, Na-Jomtien), sunbeds are usually free.

Important nuance: on public city beaches (Central Beach, Jomtien), there are no changing cabins, showers, foot showers, or toilets. There are only a few scattered ones on the central promenade and Jomtien, but they're far apart, so don't count on them. In this regard, hotel beaches in Naklua and Na-Jomtien are much better equipped — but you need to stay at one of those hotels.

The area north of North Pattaya Road or Nua Road is called Naklua (Naklua on the map). This is a spacious, quite peaceful, quiet zone where mostly hotels, local homes, and relatively calm, quiet bars are located. You can get to Central Pattaya from here on foot or by songthaew for 15 baht along Na Kluea Road, though to get there from the beach area you'll have to walk 1-2 kilometers. You can also walk along the beach of Central Pattaya. Hotels here are of various price categories, but more expensive "starred" ones prevail. There are also quite a few new modern condominiums here, with apartments rented out to tourists.

In the Naklua area there are several beaches: the main public Wongamat Beach, a rocky beach (beautiful but not suitable for swimming), and several hotel beaches with restricted access.

Wongamat Beach is sandy, with a fenced swimming area for guests, suitable for swimming even at low tide, although the water recedes far. From personal impressions, we remember the incredibly warm water here, like a bath. Amenities and entertainment here are minimal.

There's no promenade or resort feel here — access to the shore, even to the main Wongamat Beach, is difficult due to resort territories.

Prices in the area near the beach are quite high, but if you walk towards the main Na Kluea Road, prices drop immediately. Overall, the area has everything for rest and living, but the layout isn't very convenient — sometimes you have to walk a lot to get from point to point or to reach the beach, like a labyrinth. So choose your hotel location very carefully based on reviews (not just the map) if you want quick access to the beach.

Central Pattaya: the heart of parties and entertainment

Central Pattaya is the soul and tourist heart of Pattaya, the center of entertainment, shopping, and fun (Center on the map). It's thanks to this area that the city became world-famous as one of the adult entertainment capitals — it's home to the famous Walking Street, the adult street Soi 6, and the boys' street, among others. In other words, this is the perfect place for those who want to have fun, have fun, and have even more fun.

Here you'll find most of the largest shopping malls, shops, and restaurants. A huge number of hotels, from ultra-budget rooms in guesthouses without AC to luxurious apartments, accommodation for every taste.

The main part of hotels, shopping malls, and entertainment is located between Beach Road and Second Road, which run parallel to the beach. This is the conventional first line. But there's a very important nuance! On one hand, this zone is the most convenient place to stay if you want to be in the center of events and close to the beach. But on the other hand, if you choose the wrong spot, you might not sleep until late at night due to street noise and music from neighboring bars. That's no exaggeration — we've been caught out a few times ourselves. So if you need peace and quiet at least at night, it's better to choose a hotel further from the beach — between Second Road and Third Road. Plus, hotel prices here are much lower.

The central beach stretches almost 3 kilometers continuously — walking along it is a pleasure. It's sandy, even quite beautiful, with a promenade and well-equipped for relaxation. The seabed slope is comfortable, and even during the strongest low tides, you can find a spot for a comfortable swim.

But the experience is spoiled by the perpetually busy Beach Road running right along the beach and the murky water. The problem isn't that the water is dirty — it's cloudy due to sand, clay, and silt, which makes swimming not very pleasant. This is especially noticeable during bad weather and wind. But if you ignore these two points, it's a great city beach.

If you like this area and decide to stay here, let's dive deeper, as it has its own nuances:

• Central part: the heart of the city and entertainment

  This is, so to speak, the center within the center of Pattaya. Perhaps the best location for a hotel if you only need entertainment and infrastructure (Center on the map).

• Northern part: quieter than the center, near the beach

  The area in the northern part of central Pattaya from Central Pattaya Road to North Road or Nua Road (North Pattaya on the map) is essentially not much different from the central part — the beaches here are just as crowded and the water not very clear. Perhaps the only difference is a slightly lower concentration of noisy bars, restaurants, and discos. You can walk to Walking Street from here in 20-30 minutes, or take a songthaew along Second Street for 15 baht. In short, if you can't find a hotel in the center, you can safely stay here.

• Southern part: nightlife and Walking Street

  This is a great area to stay if entertainment matters more to you than beach relaxation, since the center of nightlife, Walking Street, is right here (South Pattaya on the map). What's good: during the day this area is quite calm and quiet, and only with darkness does nightlife and adult entertainment flourish on the streets. Most discos and adult shows are located here. But the beaches here are poor — practically nonexistent. The entire coastline in this area is occupied by restaurants and entertainment venues along Walking Street, and there's also a pier and boat mooring. But the relatively clean beach of Central Pattaya is just a short walk away. However, one nuance about this micro-district: it's very Indian — almost a "Little India."

• Backpacker area

  The cluster of the cheapest hotels and hostels for backpackers is along Soi Bua Khao (see location of the backpacker zone on the Pattaya map). If you've arrived in Pattaya without a pre-booked hotel and intend to rent something cheap, this is where you should head. It's no more than five minutes' walk to the promenade, and no more than ten minutes to the entertainment center. But keep in mind that the cheapest rooms are located in buildings above bars and other establishments, so it can be very noisy at night.

Pratumnak area: a quiet spot in the city center (Phra Tamnak Hill)

This area is located between the Center and Jomtien, and today it's the geographical center of the city (Pratumnak on the map).

Pratumnak is a quiet, peaceful, and well-maintained area that locals and expats often call the royal resort. The reason is that the official residence of the Thai royal family is located on the hill here. For long-term living or wintering, this is one of the most convenient places in Pattaya: it has everything you need for daily life — chain supermarkets, markets, including the famous Pratumnak market, which locals call "Russian" for its abundance of familiar products (even buckwheat). However, there are no large shopping malls in the area.

Geographically, Pratumnak is now in the center of Pattaya, making it convenient to get to both Jomtien Beach and the central part of the city — you can even walk. But it's not suitable for everyone for a short vacation. There are two features worth knowing about:

• The area is divided into two parts by condominium and hotel territories, and you can only walk between them by going around through the main road. For example, from Cosy Beach to the neighboring beach along the shore is just a few hundred meters, but going around is almost 3 kilometers!
• Elevation changes. The hilly terrain makes the area picturesque, but during a walk you'll have to go up or down. The slopes are gentle, but in the heat it can be tiring.

Now for the main thing — the beaches, there are several here:

• Cosy Beach

  This is a beautiful small cozy beach in a bay (Cosy Beach on the map). To get to it, you have to go down a steep staircase through the territory of restaurants — entry is free. At low tide, swimming is impossible — rocks are exposed, and at high tide, there's very little space left on the shore. And another important nuance: after 7:00 PM, access is closed, so no evening walks along the shore — you can't even just sit on the beach after sunset.

  But above the beach, there are two restaurants with seating in "nests" and wonderful views. Particularly popular is 3 Mermaids — you need to book tables in advance for dinner.

  

• Pratumnak Beach, also known as Paradise Beach or Asia Beach

  You can reach this beach from Cosy Beach along the shore over rocks or by going around — those same 3 kilometers (Pratumnak Beach on the map). The beach is small, located in a bay, quiet, almost wild. There's no equipped swimming area, no sunbeds or umbrellas — just sand and sea.

  

• Yinyom Beach

  From here begins the continuous sandy strip of Jomtien Beach (Yinyom Beach on the map). This is essentially part of the famous six-kilometer beach that stretches south.

  

Overall, Pratumnak is a great choice for those who value peace, views, and are willing to put up with some inconveniences for a quiet life by the sea. For a short vacation, if you want to go to the beach every day without extra hassle, it's better to look at Jomtien or the central promenade.

Jomtien Beach: the best area for a family beach vacation

Next to Pratumnak is the famous Jomtien area and beach (Jomtien on the Pattaya map). In our opinion, this is the best beach and area for a relaxing beach vacation in terms of infrastructure, clean beautiful coastline, and comfort. It can safely be called the most popular and convenient place for beach holidays in Pattaya — it's especially popular with package tourists, and deservedly so. The beaches here are cleaner than in the center, and the further south you go, the clearer the water and the fewer people.

Along the beach there's a promenade, like in the center, but it's much calmer here: noticeably fewer cars and less noise, and walks by the sea are truly enjoyable. Hotels are mostly located right on the beach and are geared toward quiet family vacations. There are also entertainment options in the area, but they're more family-friendly. If you prefer beach relaxation over constant bar-hopping and shopping malls, and you're looking for secluded hotels with private grounds and clean sand — you should definitely come here, preferably to the southern part of Jomtien.

At the same time, the area isn't boring: it even has two "adult" streets — Rompho with bars and Jomtien Complex Walking Street. And while there are no large shopping malls like in the center, that's more than compensated by four night markets where you can eat, buy souvenirs, and just have a pleasant evening. So you definitely won't be bored.

Getting to the center for entertainment and shopping is easy: a taxi or songthaew costs just 15 baht (0.45 USD), and travel time is about 15–20 minutes depending on traffic.

Na Jomtien: secluded beach vacation in the suburbs of Pattaya

If you continue south from Jomtien, past the mouth of the Yai River, you reach Na Jomtien — an even quieter and more secluded area (Na Jomtien on the Pattaya map). In essence, it's a continuation of the same Jomtien, but already outside the city limits, about 15 km from central Pattaya. And if we called Jomtien the most popular and convenient beach area, then Na Jomtien is its quieter, more relaxed version — practically a suburb.

The main asset of Na Jomtien is its wide sandy beach, stretching almost 3 km along the bay. The water here is noticeably cleaner than in the center, and sometimes even clearer than on central Jomtien. The shore has palm trees, so you can always find a shady spot, and the descent into the sea is gentle.

The local infrastructure is well-developed: there are restaurants, bars, massage salons, and shops. But nightlife and tourist activity are almost absent here. In terms of atmosphere and layout, Na Jomtien is drastically different from Pattaya — it's more like a Thai backwater than a big city. Distances between hotels are large, and everything is quite spread out — you might step out of your hotel and find yourself on an empty lot. But that doesn't mean it's bad here — it's just a completely different vacation philosophy, when you want to be isolated, not next to entertainment and noisy neighbors.

Na Jomtien is the ideal place for those who want to spend most of their vacation on the beach in peace and quiet. Order and tranquility are valued here, with no hustle and bustle or noisy parties — which is why the area is especially popular with families with children and those seeking a secluded beach vacation. If you want a truly relaxing beach holiday away from the city noise — Na Jomtien is an excellent choice.

Koh Larn Island

The small Koh Larn Island (Ko Lan, also known as Coral Island) is located 10 kilometers off the coast of Pattaya (Koh Larn on the Thailand map). It's the most popular island for day trips or visits to the clean island beaches near Pattaya. The island is tiny — just 4.5 kilometers long.

You can get there in 30–40 minutes by slow ferry from Bali Hai pier for 30 baht, or by speedboat for 150 baht one way.

Koh Larn is rarely considered by tourists as an independent resort, but rather as an addition to Pattaya's beaches or one of its attractions. Most often, tourists visit Koh Larn on day trips or independent excursions to its beaches, which are considered much cleaner than the city beaches of Pattaya. Less often, visitors stay overnight on the island for one or two days or longer.

Here are some nuances of renting in Pattaya — without knowing them, you could run into unexpected and unpleasant expenses:

• Usually and by law, the minimum rental period in Pattaya is one month. Finding accommodation for two or three weeks is also possible, but it will be noticeably more expensive per day. When renting for a month or more, a contract is signed with a deposit of one or two months' rent. That is, upon check-in, you'll need to pay two to three months' rent upfront, even if you plan to stay only one month.
• If you sign a contract for several months but move out early, you lose the deposit.
• In addition to the contract rent, utilities are paid in full, and for short-term rentals, only electricity and water are paid by the meter. For an average apartment in tourist areas, this is from 600 to 2000 baht fixed + usage charges. The fixed amount depends on the residential complex and the package of amenities available. If the complex has a pool, gym, sauna, water park — the amount is higher. Electricity and water charges can add from 1500 baht, depending on your consumption. The main electricity guzzlers are air conditioning and water heaters.
• Some landlords also include a one-time cleaning fee of 1000-2000 baht for cleaning after your stay.
