⏰ Tides in Pattaya: why time of day has nothing to do with it
The main misconception that gets passed from one blogger's review to another is: "in Pattaya, it's low tide in the morning and high tide at noon." This isn't just inaccurate — it's fundamentally wrong. Tides have absolutely nothing to do with the time of day. At 2 PM, it could be low tide, and at 6 AM, it could be high tide.
So where does this movement of water come from? It's all about gravity. Sea levels around the planet change under the influence of the Moon and Sun, as well as the shape of the ocean floor and coastline. It's a complex system governed by astronomical laws. That's why predicting tides is a bit like forecasting weather — you need special calculations.
On most Pattaya beaches, even during a strong low tide, you can still swim. You'll just need to wade out further. But there are areas where it's critical.
📍 Where in Pattaya tides actually affect your vacation
If you're staying in central Pattaya, you can breathe easy. The water level changes aren't that dramatic here, and you can swim almost anytime.
On Jomtien, the situation is a bit more noticeable: low tide is felt here, and the beach can widen by dozens of meters. To swim properly, you'll need to walk through the shallows, but overall, it's not a big deal.
A completely different story is the northern Naklua area (also known as Wong Amat). Although the main beach here is sandy, in some spots during low tide, sharp rocks are exposed. On the main Wong Amat beach, where mostly foreign tourists relax, even at low tide you can fully submerge, but you'll have to walk very far from the shore.
There's also a problem on Pratumnak and Cosy Beach (Pratumnak area) — and it's serious. The seabed here is very flat, the water recedes far, and swimming during particularly strong low tides becomes nearly impossible.
Koh Larn Island deserves special attention. Tides here are especially pronounced. For example, on Nual Beach (Monkey Beach), at low tide, you have to walk about two hundred meters to get waist-deep — tested personally. On other beaches of the island, the tide impact is less dramatic but still inconvenient. So, when planning a trip to Koh Larn, always check the tide schedule.
| Area / Beach | How low tide affects swimming | Can you swim? | Advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Pattaya | Changes are small, water recedes slightly | ✅ Yes, you can easily find a spot with a deep entry | No need to check the schedule |
| Jomtien | Water recedes noticeably, beach becomes wider | ✅ Yes, but you'll need to wade through the shallows | Be prepared for a long walk into the water |
| Naklua (Wong Amat) | Water recedes far, rocks in some spots | ⚠ Mostly yes, but you need to go far and watch out for rocks | Check the schedule, choose high tide times |
| Pratumnak and Cosy Beach | Very shallow seabed, water recedes tens of meters | ❌ Almost impossible during strong low tide | Strictly check the forecast |
| Koh Larn (overall) | Tides are very strong, especially on southern beaches | ⚠ Depends on the beach and time | Plan your trip only during high tide |
| Koh Larn, Nual Beach (Monkey Beach) | At low tide, you need to walk ~200 meters to get waist-deep | ❌ Extremely uncomfortable at low tide | Visit only during high tide |

💡 What to do if you hit low tide
Situation: you've arrived at the beach, and there's no water. Here are a few options for what to do:
- Wade further out. On most beaches, even at low tide, there are spots with enough depth.
- Move to another spot along the shore. Central Beach or Jomtien are more predictable.
- Change your plans. Low tide is a great time for walking along the exposed seabed. You can check out marine life in the tide pools or just take some unusual photos. Or head to the city center to wander around the malls.
- Use the hotel pool. If the sea has completely disappeared and you're in Naklua or Pratumnak, the hotel pool becomes your best friend. When planning your vacation, use the "Pool" filter on booking sites to find accommodations with a pool.
