Da Nang or Phan Thiet (Mui Ne) — Where to Go in Vietnam: Choice by Season, Budget, and Interests

Article and Section Navigation

My Khe Beach in Da Nang — wide, clean, and excellently equipped

When planning a trip to Vietnam, many travelers face a difficult choice between two famous resorts: dynamic and modern Da Nang on the central coast and relaxed, windy resort area of Mui Ne near the city of Phan Thiet in the south. We have visited both places more than once, and our main recommendation is simple: there is no universal answer for everyone. It all depends on what you expect from your vacation. So if you want an honest answer, read everything carefully to the end.

In this article, we won't retell general guidebooks, but will make an honest, point-by-point comparison based solely on verified information from our personal trips. You'll find out where the beaches are better for swimming with children, and where — for surfing, in which city the excursions are more interesting, and where it's easier with the budget and communication in Russian. At the end, you'll find a brief verdict for different types of travelers.

Briefly about geography:

Da Nang — a large, rapidly developing city in central Vietnam, the fourth largest in the country. It's not just a resort, but a metropolis with skyscrapers, an international airport, and a rich history dating back to the 2nd century.

Phan Thiet and Mui Ne — often used as synonyms, but that's not entirely accurate. Phan Thiet is a provincial city, and Mui Ne is a 10+ km long resort area on its outskirts, where all the tourist life is concentrated. This is a place that has transformed from a fishing village into a mecca for kite- and windsurfers.

Comparison by Key Parameters

For clarity, we have summarized the main differences between the two resorts in one table. This will help you form a first impression quickly.

Da Nang and Phan Thiet (Mui Ne): Brief Resort Comparison
Criterion Da Nang Phan Thiet / Mui Ne
Atmosphere and Type Modern city-resort, dynamic, civilized. A combination of beach vacation, urban entertainment, and rich excursion options. Wide streets, sidewalks, promenades. Extended resort village, relaxed, sporty-party. The center of kite- and windsurfing in Asia. All life along one main road.
Beaches and Sea Wide sandy beaches (My Khe), gentle slope, calm sea from May to August. Suitable for children. Waves for surfing appear from September to December. Not very long sandy strip, in some places the water reaches concrete and hotel grounds. Often windy, waves are normal. Ideal for surfing and kitesurfing, especially from January to March. Not always for calm swimming, water is often murky.
Infrastructure Developed urban infrastructure: shopping malls (Vincom, Lotte Mart), markets (Han Market). No signs or services in Russian and even few in English, staff often don't speak English. All infrastructure is concentrated along one road in Mui Ne: Russian-speaking travel agencies, menus, signs. Convenient for beginners. Large stores (Coop Mart, Lotte Mart) only in Phan Thiet.
Attractions Rich and diverse: Marble Mountains, Cham Museum, Dragon Bridge, Ba Na Hills with Golden Bridge, proximity to Hoi An and Hue. Mainly natural: Red and White Dunes, Fairy Stream, Cham Towers, Ke Ga Lighthouse, Ta Cu Mountain. Tours to Da Lat are popular.
For Whom Families with children, lovers of comfort and excursions, those who value modern urban landscapes. Youth, surfers and kite surfers, budget travelers, lovers of simple beach romance and seafood.

Weather and Seasons: When is the Best Time to Go

This is perhaps the most important point for making a decision. The climate at the two resorts differs dramatically.

Waves and wind — the norm in Mui Ne, which is good for surfers but can hinder calm swimming
  • Seasons in Da Nang

    • Best time (dry season): From January to August. This is the period with minimal precipitation, clear sky and sun. The best time for "swimming" vacation is from May to August, as there are practically no waves at sea during this time. Air temperature +28...+34°C, water +27°C.
    • Low season (rainy): From September to December. During this time, it often rains, the sky is overcast. The most precipitation falls in October and November. Sometimes in September-October, typhoons, heavy rains, and floods can hit the coast. The sea becomes rough, waves for surfing appear. Hotel prices during this time can drop significantly.

  • Seasons in Phan Thiet/Mui Ne

    • Best time (dry and windy season): From November to April. Minimal precipitation, the sky is mostly clear. However, this is the windiest period, especially at the turn of the seasons in October and November. It is this wind that creates ideal conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing, which is why people come here.
    • You can go (rainy season): From May to October. Rains are mostly short-term, occurring at night or in the evening. Waves and wind are a bit calmer than in winter. The sea here is quite calm and suitable for swimming most of the time, the swimming season with small waves lasts from April to November.

Weather summary: If you are planning a classic beach vacation with swimming in calm sea, choose Da Nang in the period March-August. If your goal is active water sports (kitesurfing, windsurfing) or you are not afraid of wind, your choice is Mui Ne in the period November-March.

But generally speaking, the weather in Mui Ne is more favorable and stable than in Da Nang, where from September to December there is a high chance of encountering serious weather troubles.

Beaches and Sea: For Swimming or Sports?

  • Da Nang Beaches: Comfort and Cleanliness

Da Nang's beaches are its pride. The main city beach My Khe stretches for six kilometers within the city limits, and another 20 kilometers beyond them. Sand, palm trees, and almost no vacationers on remote sections.

    • My Khe: Wide coastline with fine white sand, gentle slope into the water. There is sunbed rental, cafes, lifeguards.
    • Bac My An (China Beach): About 20 km of almost deserted sand north of the city. Almost no infrastructure, but complete seclusion.
    • Da Nang Bay (Red Beach): Always calm water, but less clear. There is a road nearby.

In the dry season, the sea here is gentle and clear. Waves appear only during the rainy season (September-December), attracting surfers.

My Khe Beach — the standard of comfortable family vacation: gentle slope, sunbeds, and lifeguards
  • Mui Ne Beaches: Wind, Waves, and Space

The beach in Mui Ne is a long sandy strip, but not along the entire length of the resort area. Moreover, its character changes depending on the season.

    • The beach here is very wide, suitable for walks along the shore. There are sunbeds, water activities, cafes and restaurants open directly onto the beach, kitesurfing and surfing schools.
    • Main feature — almost constant wind, especially in the afternoon. This is paradise for kite- and windsurfers, but for inexperienced swimmers or small children, swimming can be uncomfortable. The water is often murky due to waves and sand.

An opinion we share: if you really love swimming in calm, clear water, we highly recommend choosing a hotel with a pool. Unfortunately, the sea in Mui Ne is very often rough.

The beach in Mui Ne is not perfect everywhere, so you need to approach choosing a hotel location carefully

Infrastructure, Food, and Budget

  • Urban Environment and Services

Da Nang — is a full-fledged modern metropolis. The city's layout is significantly different from other resort cities in the country, for the better. There are very wide streets and modern buildings, there are even sidewalks and promenades where you can actually take a leisurely stroll. However, here even in English you won't always be able to find a common language. In some places, the situation with English language knowledge is so bad that hotel reception staff don't know even the most basic phrases.

Da Nang's promenade is one of the longest and most spacious in Vietnam

Mui Ne — is one main road, along which for kilometers there are hotels, Russian-speaking travel agencies, cafes with Cyrillic menus, and shops. Signs in Russian are everywhere on the streets, tours are conducted in Russian. Everything necessary for vacation can be found within walking distance, but beyond this axis — quiet neighborhoods or wastelands. Large shopping malls (Coop Mart, Lotte Mart) are in Phan Thiet, you need to take a taxi or bus to get there.

In Mui Ne, everything is arranged differently: here you can only walk on the sidewalks
  • Food and Approximate Prices

Food prices are generally comparable, but the atmosphere is different.

    • Da Nang: Price order for budget calculation: eating in an inexpensive tourist cafe — from 120,000/person (from 4.56 USD), in a seafood restaurant — from 500,000/person (from 19.01 USD). Menus in English are hard to find, staff mostly don't speak English.
    • Mui Ne — the kingdom of seafood. Restaurants with aquariums where they will cook the fish, shrimp, or lobster you choose. Minimum price in an average tourist cafe: fish — from 390,000 dong/kg (from 14.83 USD), shrimp — from 450,000 dong/kg (from 17.11 USD). Also many simple cafes with Russian-Vietnamese cuisine.
Tourist restaurants in Mui Ne with menus in English and Russian are very tempting
  • Accommodation: Hotels and Prices

Hotel prices vary depending on the season and location.

    • In Da Nang, prices for reference: a room in an inexpensive guesthouse for two with air conditioning — from 300,000 dong (from 11.41 USD), in a hotel with breakfast — from 400,000 dong (from 15.21 USD).
    • In Mui Ne, a double room in a budget guesthouse will cost about 350,000 dong (from 13.31 USD). Hotels with pools start from 600,000 (from 22.81 USD). Due to the elongated geography, it's important to carefully look at the hotel's location. If you stay in one of the secluded hotels on distant beaches, it may be problematic to find a cafe or shop there, and the beach may turn out to be unsuitable for swimming.
If you choose a hotel location poorly in Mui Ne, you can end up on such a "beach"
  • Transport: How to Get Around

    • In Da Nang, it's convenient to use taxis via the Grab app. Motorbike rental (from 100,000 dong/day) is very popular. This provides freedom for trips. City buses run, but the route network is poorly connected to the beach area.
    • In Mui Ne, due to the large length of the resort area (the total length of the entire beach area here is about 60 kilometers!!!), your own transport is almost necessary. Motorbike rental (from 100,000 dong/day) — the most popular option. Taxis and motorbike taxis (including via Grab) are also plentiful. There is public transport — Phan Thiet city buses, only 9 routes, but only one runs through the resort.

Attractions and Entertainment

Here the two resorts offer fundamentally different opportunities.

  • Da Nang: Culture, History, and Modernity

Da Nang — an ideal base for educational vacation. An incredible amount of interesting things is concentrated in the city itself and within an hour's drive:

Marble Mountains - the hallmark of Da Nang
  • Mui Ne/Phan Thiet: Nature and Adrenaline

Entertainment here revolves around nature and activities. Phan Thiet and Mui Ne are not famous for an abundance of attractions, and in the Mui Ne resort area itself, consider there are practically none. To see something interesting, you'll have to go to at least the immediate surroundings.

In Mui Ne, there are sand dunes and nature

The most convenient way to get acquainted with local attractions is to join a group tour. There are many travel agencies in Mui Ne focused on Russian-speaking tourists.

Summarizing: What to Choose for Whom?

Based on our experience of trips to both places, here are the final recommendations.

Quick Selection Guide

Choose DA NANG, if you are:
  • A family with children (gentle beach, clean water, infrastructure).
  • A lover of excursions and culture (Hoi An, Hue, My Son nearby).
  • Someone who values comfort, modern hotels, and urban environment.
  • Traveling from May to August for the perfect beach vacation.
Choose MUI NE (Phan Thiet), if you are:
  • A kitesurfer, windsurfer, or want to become one (best conditions in Asia here).
  • A young traveler or couple looking for an inexpensive and relaxed vacation.
  • Want simple tourist infrastructure with Russian language.
  • Traveling any time of year and not afraid of wind.

Both resorts are good in their own way and worthy of a visit. Da Nang — is the Vietnam of the future, offering a harmonious mix of relaxation and educational tourism. Mui Ne — is the Vietnamese "style" for soul and body, a place where you can disconnect from everything and catch a wave in the most literal sense.

Whichever resort you choose, Vietnam is guaranteed to give you warm sea, bright sun, and lots of impressions. Have a great vacation!
