Overview of the Best Beach Resorts in Vietnam

We've driven to all the key beach destinations in the country and prepared brief descriptions of each resort. Nha Trang

Nha Trang beach

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

Nha Trang city on the south coast of Vietnam is the most popular beach resort. Its fame is due not to perfect "Bounty-style" beaches, but to a successful combination: it has decent beaches, a huge number of activities, interesting attractions, and great shopping. Today, the "Russification" of the resort has peaked: Russian speech is heard everywhere, signs and even road signs are duplicated in Russian. This was facilitated by direct flights from Russia and active promotion by tour operators. But even before the influx of Russian tourists, Nha Trang was the most visited resort in the country.

It's a large, developed coastal city. The tourist area has all the necessary infrastructure. Accommodation prices are quite democratic: a double room in a decent hotel can be found from $20. In five-star hotels, prices start from $100. The promenade is well-maintained, with sports facilities and jogging paths; it's pleasant to stroll here in the evening. There are many activities, although not yet on the scale of Pattaya.

There are several beaches in Nha Trang. The most accessible is the city beach, which is long, clean, but separated from city blocks by a noisy highway. For those seeking peace and seclusion, it's not suitable, but for undemanding beachgoers who want everything at once, it's an excellent option. To the north and south of the city (by taxi or rental transport), there are several more picturesque beaches. And within Nha Trang's waters, there are islands with excellent beaches that can be visited on excursions. Food prices: lunch with rice and chicken in a budget tourist cafe from 80,000 VND (3.04 USD), local beer from 20,000 VND (0.76 USD).

Nha Trang is the best choice for those coming to Vietnam not just for the beach, but also for entertainment, excursions, and shopping. If a pristine beach, diving, or snorkeling are more important to you, consider other resorts.

Phan Thiet and Mui Ne

Mui Ne beach

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

Until recently, the Mui Ne resort area was the most popular spot for Russians, until Nha Trang took the lead. Mui Ne is the complete opposite of Nha Trang: a quiet, calm area stretching 10 kilometers along the coast. Besides hotels and basic tourist infrastructure, there's practically nothing else here, and Mui Ne feels like a big village. Nightlife is sparse and has shown a downward trend in recent years.

However, the "village" character shouldn't deter you: it has everything needed for a beach vacation. What's lacking is shopping. But Phan Thiet, with a couple of large shopping malls and markets, is a 20-minute drive away. Mui Ne's beaches are not distinguished by cleanliness or beauty: due to constant winds and waves, debris is washed ashore, and the water is often murky. But for those who like to ride the waves, it's a paradise: many kitesurfing and surfing schools, excellent conditions. Diving and snorkeling are poorly developed.

There are few attractions: usually, visitors see the ancient Cham towers, the mountain with the reclining Buddha, and the white and red sand dunes. Excursion enthusiasts can go to more distant places in Vietnam or neighboring Cambodia and Laos.

Phan Rang

Vacation in Phan Rang

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

Phan Rang is a resort town on the coast of the South China Sea in southern Vietnam, located between the two popular and crowded seaside resorts of Nha Trang and Mui Ne, roughly equidistant from each. The resort of Phan Rang differs dramatically from the more "hyped" Mui Ne and Nha Trang. There are far fewer foreign tourists here, hence less noise and bustle. It's popular with local vacationers, but fortunately, they only fill the resort on weekends and holidays; the rest of the time, it's calm and quiet. Walking or riding a scooter around the area, you can observe authentic, non-touristy Vietnam. So to speak, get to know the country as it really is.

There are few attractions in Phan Rang, and nightlife is almost non-existent. Local hotels have rental points for surfing and kiting equipment. However, conditions for active water sports are not very favorable here: suitable wind and waves can only be caught in December and January. Snorkeling enthusiasts will only find interest at Ca Na beach, located 30 km south of the city. Therefore, this resort is primarily suitable for those who enjoy a quiet, relaxing beach vacation, as well as for gastronomic tourism. In local restaurants, cafes, and eateries, you can try many exotic dishes (mainly seafood), and prices are lower than at more popular resorts.

Da Nang

My Khe city beach in Da Nang

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

The large city of Da Nang in central Vietnam was relatively unknown among Europeans until recently, but it's very popular with Vietnamese and Chinese. In 2005, Forbes magazine named Da Nang's beaches among the most attractive in the world, and today they indeed impress with their length, width, and… emptiness. However, Da Nang is a major commercial and port city, so the water may not be as clean as on remote islands, and the coastline is built up in places. After the numerous constructions are completed, the shore will become even more modern and developed, but natural exoticism with palm trees by the water should not be expected.

Da Nang itself is spacious, modern, with wide roads. It has everything for a vacation, but there is no separate tourist area yet. There are few attractions in the city (museums, Marble Mountains), and interesting places are outside the city: Hoi An, My Son ruins, the ancient capital of Hue, Hai Van Pass. There is entertainment, but it's mainly geared towards local tourists. There are few Europeans, but the situation is changing. If you're looking for new, yet "undiscovered" places and want to relax away from your compatriots, Da Nang might be a good option. Accommodation prices: a room in a guesthouse with A/C from 300,000 VND (11.4 USD), a hotel room with breakfast from 400,000 VND (15.2 USD).

Hoi An

An Bang Beach

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

The small town of Hoi An is just a half-hour drive from Da Nang. Unlike its neighbor, it is much more favored by European tourists, including Russian speakers. Many come here on a multi-day excursion from Nha Trang or Phan Thiet. Hoi An is famous primarily as a sightseeing destination (the old town is a UNESCO site), but it also has decent beaches.

Strolls through ancient streets with centuries-old houses and museums combine perfectly with a beach vacation. The beaches in Hoi An are of decent quality, sandy, not crowded, and you can go diving on nearby islands. The downside is that the beaches are several kilometers from the center, so when choosing a hotel, you'll have to decide: either proximity to the beach or the center with its atmosphere. If you stay on the beach, there's nothing to do in the evening; you'll have to go into town. Hoi An has many attractions, plus you can visit the My Son ruins, Marble Mountains, or Hue. Hoi An's cuisine is a point of pride: in the numerous cafes and restaurants that light their lanterns in the evening, you can try incredible delicacies. And most importantly, prices are quite affordable here.

Lang Co

View of Lang Co

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

The small village of Lang Co, as a vacation spot, is not suitable for every tourist. It lies on the shore between Da Nang and Hue, and the atmosphere here is very secluded. Yes, it's considered a tourist resort, but the tourist infrastructure is very poorly developed: besides a few hotels, there is nothing specifically for tourists. You won't find travel agencies, excursions, cafes, restaurants, or even currency exchange. You can only eat and enjoy activities within the hotel grounds, but once you step outside, you'll find yourself in an ordinary fishing village where the only signs of civilization (shops, local cafes, a couple of ATMs) are along the main highway.

However, credit where it's due: Lang Co has an excellent beach. By some accounts, it's even considered the most beautiful in Vietnam. It stretches continuously for 10 kilometers, all fine white and yellow sand, very pleasant to the touch. You can't call the beach perfectly clean; there is debris washed up by the sea and waste from the village, but the beaches near hotels are cleaned. The slope of the seabed is good: not too deep, which is suitable for children, and at the same time not too shallow, so you can swim even during low tide.

Phu Quoc Island

Starfish Beach

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam (about 45 km long), located in the south of the country. It is the standard for the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam. If you're looking for the perfect, secluded beach — come here. It also has some of the best diving. The island's infrastructure is developed; there is a conditional tourist area, but overall, Phu Quoc is still quiet and underdeveloped. A large part of the island is covered in jungle, where you can see rich wildlife. There aren't many noisy activities, but active tourists will find plenty to do: trekking, riding around in search of the best beach. There is a simplified visa regime for foreign citizens: a visa is not required for stays up to 15 days (provided the passport is valid for at least 45 days).

Prices on Phu Quoc are slightly higher than on the mainland. Accommodation: a budget guesthouse from $10, a hotel with its own grounds from $30. Food: lunch with rice and chicken in a tourist cafe from 80,000 VND (3.04 USD), in local cafes from 30,000 VND (1.14 USD). Important: MIR cards do not work on Phu Quoc; UnionPay (Rosselkhozbank) is accepted limitedly; it's better to have cash in US dollars.

Con Dao Island

Con Dao Island

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

Con Dao Island is located in the south of the country, about 100 kilometers off the coast in the South China Sea. It's a group (archipelago) of 16 islands, the largest of which is Con Son, formerly a place for political prisoners. Con Dao is one of the popular island resorts in Vietnam. The island offers guests excellent beach relaxation and opportunities for diving and snorkeling, which are considered the best in Vietnam. Given its remoteness and inaccessibility, a vacation here is secluded, peaceful, and exotic. There are few tourists, and you can still encounter wild, unexplored places. Currently, tourist infrastructure is being actively built on the island, so if you want to see it before it becomes densely populated by tourists, you should hurry.

Since 1984, most of the archipelago's territory has been part of a National Park, where you can get acquainted with exotic animals, plants, and the underwater world. There are also historical attractions: the political prisoner prison (Phu Hai prison), turned into a museum, Hang Duong Cemetery, and the Revolution Museum. Tourist infrastructure is still poorly developed, which for such a place is more of a plus. The island's center is a recently built town (Con Son Village) with excellent roads and new buildings, but you can only find the essentials there. There are no shopping malls, everything is expensive, so it's better to buy everything you need on the mainland. There's nothing to do in the evenings, except diving centers and travel agencies for excursions.

Cat Ba Island and Halong Bay

Relaxing on Cat Ba

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

Cat Ba Island is the largest of the 366 islands in the archipelago of the same name in northern Vietnam, 140 kilometers from Hanoi. Cat Ba is the only developed beach resort in northern Vietnam. There aren't many beaches on the island, but enough for a comfortable vacation. There are five developed and equipped beaches here: Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, Cat Co 3, Tung Thu, and the new Cac Ba beach. All are sandy and located in cozy coves sheltered from waves and wind. There are also many secluded beaches nearby that can be reached by excursion, private boat, or kayak.

The center of tourist life on the island is Cat Ba Town, where all the infrastructure is concentrated: hotels, shops, cafes, restaurants, travel agencies, banks, transport rentals. The beaches are within walking distance from the center. After a beach day, you can have fun at the Rose Club nightclub, one of the bars, sing karaoke, get a massage, eat fresh seafood on Pho Tung Dinh street, or visit the night market. And now there's a magnificent pedestrian promenade with a musical fountain, children's entertainment, and restaurants. Evening life on Cat Ba is quite developed. The beach season here lasts from April to November.

Vung Tau

Extensive coastline with beach in Vung Tau

– beach vacation
– attractions and excursions
– entertainment and nightlife
– shopping
– affordability (price)
– accessibility (transport)

The large city of Vung Tau (population over 450,000) is located in the south, 125 km from Ho Chi Minh City. It's an industrial center (oil extraction) and a popular holiday destination for locals and Vietnamese coming from Ho Chi Minh City. There are few European tourists here. Vung Tau's beaches are more like urban swimming zones rather than resort beaches. The main ones: Back Beach — the main beach, very long, wide, with sunbeds (from 50,000 VND (1.9 USD)), but often windy and wavy; Front Beach — small, located in a bay, mostly used by locals, no infrastructure; Pineapple Beach — small, secluded, almost deserted, but also without amenities.

Vung Tau's infrastructure is developed (urban), but tourist infrastructure is geared towards locals: few travel agencies, difficulty with English, scooter rentals and currency exchange need to be searched for. Accommodation prices are pleasing: a room from $8. Food: a dish in a street cafe from 30,000 VND (1.14 USD), in tourist places from 60,000 (2.28 USD). MIR cards are accepted only at VRB ATMs (there are three, one often doesn't work), UnionPay — limited. Exchanging cash is better done at jewelry stores, for example, on Trần Hưng Đạo street. Overall, Vung Tau can be recommended for a short trip from Ho Chi Minh City (for a day or two), but for a full-fledged vacation, it's better to choose another resort.
