Phu Aoc Island is an island in the Gulf of Thailand of the South China Sea in southern Vietnam, 45 kilometers from the mainland, the largest island in the country (Phu Quoc on the map of Vietnam). The length of the island is 48 kilometers, the width is about 25 kilometers. The relief of the island is predominantly mountainous, for which it is also called the "99 mountains" island, and it is said that there are really exactly 99 in the chain of mountains gradually descending from north to south.

Phu Quoc is often compared to the popular Thai island Phuket, and it really resembles it in some ways, they are even the same in size. But compared to Phuket, Phu Quoc is still more "wild", less developed and equipped, and much less party. There is no such abundance of night entertainment like Phuket discos, noisy bars, shopping, not to mention sex tourism, in Fukuoka. Even in terms of historical and cultural attractions, Phu Quoc is significantly inferior to Phuket. And this is not surprising, because a few decades ago there was nothing here but a prison for prisoners of war and several villages. The reason why such a paradise island remained underdeveloped is simple: for many years the island remained a disputed territory between Vietnam and Cambodia and passed from one state to another. Now the tension has subsided, but Vietnam still maintains a small military contingent on the island, which only affects security on the island for the better.

However, now the island is changing rapidly. Like mushrooms in the rain, new resort villages and even cities appear here, not yet fully populated and resembling "ghost towns", but ready to receive tens of thousands of tourists. Moreover, they are built according to the most modern standards with a convenient layout and in thematic architectural styles. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that Phu Quoc is the coolest resort in Vietnam and has already left behind the famous Nha Trang, Phan Thiet, Vung Tau and other mainland resorts. .

You are probably interested in the question: "What to do on the island, except to lie on the beach?". Yes, a lot of things! You can go on an eco-tour to the jungles and mountains. If you want, you can even go there for a few days with a tent. You can rent a motorcycle or mountain bike and explore the island on your own, visiting beautiful locations and interesting places. There are also many tourist attractions here: two huge amusement parks with water parks, a safari park, the world's longest cable car.

One of the mandatory places where tourists are brought is the pearl farm and museum, because the second name of the island is "Pearl Island". There is also a black pepper plantation and fish sauce factories on the island. Fukuoka is famous for all this, and this is exactly what the wealth and economy of the island is built on, not counting tourism, of course.

Local travel agencies offer excursions to neighboring islands and secluded tropical beaches. One of the popular tourist attractions on the island is fishing. Moreover, you can catch not only fish, but also try yourself as a catcher of squid, crabs and other marine life. Another activity for which they come here is diving. It is one of the best places in the whole of Vietnam for diving and one of the cheapest places in the world. But cheap is not in quality, but in terms of the costs that you will incur.

What are the beaches in Fukuoka

The beaches of Fukuoka are his pride. The island is still considered not particularly touched by civilization, not spoiled by tourists place. Almost the entire perimeter of the island is the cleanest beaches with snow–white sand and palm trees almost at the water's edge. However, it is fair to say that bathing beaches are not everywhere here, and yet there are subtleties that you need to know about.

There are almost no normal beaches on the east coast (this is on the right on the map), and that is why most of the resort areas and areas are located on the west coast. Moreover, only a small part of the beaches are normally equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas, they have cafes and other infrastructure for a comfortable stay. Moreover, it is worth admitting quite honestly that wild beaches outside resort areas and hotels during bad weather, and not only during bad weather, is a very sad sight because of the huge amount of garbage. It's not like swimming on them, it's even unpleasant.

So if you want to "discover" a secluded paradise beach far from tourist areas here, then most likely you will be disappointed. We tried to do this, and for this we traveled to all corners of Fukuoka. As a result, nothing better than the well-known Long Beach was found.

But what's really cool here is that almost all the beaches in Fukuoka are public and free. There are only a few places on the shore where it is impossible to get to because of hotels or where they charge a fee for passage.

  There are no changing rooms on the public beaches of Fukuoka, at least we have not met. Changing rooms in Vietnam are generally a problem everywhere, they are not accepted here. Some hotel beaches have changing rooms and toilets for guests, but they are located on the hotel territory, where they are not always allowed to enter from the outside.

• Fun on the beaches of Fukuoka

  There are very few usual water activities on the beaches of Fukuoka and they are concentrated only in a few places. We met points with the rental of boards for sap-surf, jet skis, banana riding, pill and parachute (parasailing) on Long Beach in the Duong Dong area, on the same Long Beach opposite the night market /Sonasea shopping center, on Khem Beach, on Sao Beach. We also saw the rental of jet skis in Sunset Town, but at the time when we were there, the beaches and infrastructure were just being built there, so maybe there will be more soon.

Infrastructure in Fukuoka

Speaking in general, the most developed place with urban infrastructure is the city of Duong Dong. Here are the main authorities, large markets, shops, banks. However, the most developed tourist infrastructure is concentrated near Duong Dong along Long Beach, at least for now. It is here that the maximum concentration of hotels and inexpensive guest houses, travel agencies, rental vehicles, currency exchangers. But this oldest and most affordable tourist area is being overtaken by new modern and still under construction tourist areas Sunset Town and Khem Beach, but the prices there are, of course, higher.

Shopping in Fukuoka, where and what to buy

We have not seen large modern shopping malls in Fukuoka, but in general there are no problems with shopping here. There are small shops everywhere, many markets, you can find chain supermarkets, night markets are open for tourists. But shopping options should again be considered depending on where you will be resting, because there are areas and beaches where, apart from a souvenir shop at the hotel in the nearest district, you will not be able to find anything, you will have to go to other areas.

The most developed places for shopping in Fukuoka are Duong Dong city center and Long Beach next to it. You can find and buy almost everything here. For tourist shopping, the night market in Duong Dong by the river will be especially interesting, but the prices there are high. Inexpensive fruits, vegetables and other fresh products can be purchased at the local market near the bridge. Well, most tourists in the resort area near the beach are happy to go to one of the largest low–price supermarkets in Fukuoka - KingKong Mart.

A new large center for tourist shopping is now in the new modern city for tourists Sunset Town. There is a very cool night market and a large Vietnam Select supermarket. Another place where you can come to "shop around" is the Sonasea Shopping Center. In fact, this is a gallery street with shops, and in the evening there is a night market.

A separate story about the fish sauce, black pepper factories and the pearl farm trading house, where tourists are brought for shopping during excursions. The goods there are really very high-quality, but at the same time very expensive. For example, Fukuoka branded fish sauce is sold at a price of 140,000 VND per bottle, while in supermarkets similar in characteristics, but other brands, you can buy from 60,000 VND. It's up to you to buy in such places or not, but in any case, keep in mind that it's easy to get a discount of up to 10% there if you start haggling, and maybe you can get more.

Where and what to eat in Fukuoka, and what are the prices

On the Internet and from bloggers you can hear that everything is incredibly expensive in Fukuoka and here you need to be a millionaire to relax and eat deliciously, and the opposite opinion is that everything costs a penny and "you can live on a couple of dollars a day." But all these are extremes for "hype" or a biased opinion due to the inexperience of bloggers. In fact, the truth is somewhere in the middle: prices in Fukuoka are only slightly higher than on the mainland and at other popular resorts (and sometimes cheaper), but how much you spend on food will depend on where and how you are ready to eat. Here you can eat on a budget with equal success, and spend millions of DONG in one meal.

Tourist cafes and restaurants, meals at hotels are quite expensive. But in fact, this is the case at any resort in Vietnam (and not only Vietnam), so this is not a feature of Fukuoka. Here are the real minimum prices for the benchmark:

• A simple breakfast of eggs, toast and a glass of juice/coffee/tea at the hotel will cost from 100 000 VND / 3.9 rubles
• The same breakfast in a street cafe will cost from 80,000 / 3.12 rubles
• The price in an inexpensive tourist cafe for a simple rice–based dish, for example, the most popular rice with chicken (Com Ga) - from 80,000 3.12 rubles
• Softdrink drinks are cola, sprite, etc. from 20,000 VND, for beer from 30,000 VND or other alcohol from 50,000 VND per serving (shot) or glass of wine.
• Seafood dishes are charged per serving (from 200,000 / 7.81 rub.) or by weight. Here the price spread is very strong, you can easily eat seafood for 1,000,000 per person rate temporary unavailable/span> rub ..

Thus, just as an example of calculation, the cost of meals for one day when eating at a hotel or tourist cafes at a minimum will be as follows:

• Breakfast – 100,000 VND
• Lunch – 80,000 dons + 20,000 dongs (softdrink).
• Dinner – 80,000 dons + 30,000 VND (beer).

Total 310,000 VND/person per day / 12.1 rub . And this is the minimum price for a monotonous meal with rice without any "delicious" seafood and soft drinks such as shakes, cocktails, etc. If you do not plan to deny yourself seafood, then you need to count on about 1,000,000 per person per day / rate temporary unavailable/span> rub ..

If you come here for a long time or as a budget traveler, then you can eat in Fukuoka and much cheaper, as the locals do. In this case, you will spend almost as much as on the mainland, well, maybe 5-10% more. Drinks, water, alcohol can be bought in stores and supermarkets, preferably in large ones. Ready meals can be eaten very cheaply in establishments where locals eat. These are simple family cafes, where one or two dishes are often cooked at a very low price. Sometimes they are located right in the family homes on the ground floors, sometimes it is a full-fledged outdoor kitchen with plastic tables and chairs, and sometimes just a mobile kitchen with stools and folding tables.

Perhaps the situation and sanitary conditions in them will seem frightening to you, but millions of local residents and thousands of travelers, including us, constantly eat in them, as a rule, without problems.

In such places, one full-fledged dish with rice costs from 30,000 dong, and drinks are sold for 10-15 000. As a result, you can fully eat here for 40 000 – 100 000 dongov (1.56-3.9 rub.). The cheapest establishments of this type can be found in Duong Dong and villages, a little more expensive in the old tourist area of Duong Dong on Long Beach and in the Ong Lang beach area. But in the new tourist towns you can still look for such cafes for locals, so most likely you will have to eat there in more expensive tourist establishments.

Currency exchange in Fukuoka, ATMs and bank cards

In Fukuoka, almost everywhere legal exchange is conducted in local currency dong, foreign currency can be accepted only in some travel agencies and privately. Therefore, there is no way to do without local money.

You can exchange any world currency in Fukuoka without any problems, but it's best to carry dollars or euros, the exchange rate is lower for other currencies. Cash rubles are not needed here at all, they cannot be exchanged at a reasonable exchange rate. Yuan is also accepted, but the exchange rate here, and indeed in Vietnam, for yuan is less profitable than dollars or euros.

As for the exchange rate in Fukuoka, this is not an easy question. We traveled around different areas, checked the exchange rate in different exchangers, and came to the conclusion that changing the currency here is less profitable than in large cities on the mainland. Moreover, there is a strong difference in rates between different areas of the island. The most profitable one we came across in the exchangers in the old tourist area on Long Beach beach in Duong Dong. For example, near the famous KingKong Mart supermarket there are several ombenniki with an excellent exchange rate, so if you need to change profitably, you can immediately go here and bypass the exchangers in the area to compare the rates. In principle, a good exchange rate even at Fukuoka airport, you can change money, at least for the first time of rest.

As for bank cards. Mir maps do not work in Fukuoka at all, in any way and nowhere! Unionpay cards work for withdrawal and payment, but at the moment only one Russian bank is Rosselkhoznadzor, all the others are under sanctions. Withdrawing money from a card, especially with a ruble account, is much less profitable than exchanging cash dollars or euros. Internet and cellular communication in Fukuoka, where to buy a SIM card

Russian mobile operators are working in Fukuoka, but it will be very expensive international roaming, so be careful. It is better to first study the tariffs of your operator and enable special options to save money.

In principle, on a short vacation in Fukuoka, you can even do without cellular communication and the Internet, because WiFi is available in almost all hotels and almost all guest houses, and some hotels even provide access to the network on the beaches.

If you still can't do without communication on vacation, then you can buy a local SIM card or a tourist one, here's how to do it:

Tourist SIM cards is a convenient way for those who come to Vietnam for a short time. It is simple and convenient with them that you do not need to study tariffs and delve into everything, spend time on registration. However, you will have to overpay twice as much as for a regular SIM card. You just buy it, insert it into your smartphone, and it starts working, and at the end of the rest you throw it away. You can buy such cards at the airport, on the streets in travel agencies and even in some retail stores, just look for signs and announcements of Sim Cards. You will be offered several options for different expiration dates, usually 7, 10 or 14 days, and with different traffic volumes, you will only have to choose. We have seen such cards at a minimum price of 150,000 VND with a tariff for 7 days, but it is not a fact that you will find such a price in the first place you come across, rather you will have to pay from 200,000 VND.

Prepaid local SIM cards, unlike "tourist" cards, are issued to you using a foreign passport. They are at least two times cheaper, but the savings are especially noticeable with prolonged use for a month or more. You can buy such a SIM card at the official offices of mobile operators under the signs Viettel, Vinaphone or Mobifone. There are such offices in Duong Dong and the resort areas of Mui Ne, and in Phan Thiet, look for the nearest one on the map or just during a walk. Just keep in mind that not all establishments under the signs of operators are official offices and actually issue SIM cards to individuals. Some of them are simply engaged in the sale or repair of phones and sell travel SIM cards. To quickly find out if they will sell you a SIM card with registration for you, just go to such a store, immediately show your passport and ask about the SIM card. Then, in most cases, sellers will understand that you want to issue a SIM card for yourself, and if they can't do this, they will immediately refuse you.

You don't need to take a lot of Internet, from our experience of active travel, we know that together with hotel WiFi (and it is almost everywhere) for 30 days of travel, we rarely ever went beyond 30GB. Now in Vietnam, tariffs with daily limits are popular, i.e. when the tariff, for example, is valid for 30 days, and every day a few gigabytes are given, which do not transfer to the next day. For example, the last time we charged 6GB/day, and this is a lot, we almost never went beyond 2GB/day on two devices, so you can safely take such a tariff.

Hotels and accommodation in Fukuoka, where to stay

Hotels in Fukuoka are somewhat more expensive by Vietnamese standards than on the mainland, but in general the prices are very affordable. Here you can easily find resorts with your own territories and the beach at an affordable price (from $ 30 per room for two), and budget guest houses from $ 10 per room or $ 5 per bed in a hostel.

However, good hotels in Fukuoka are almost always full, and just coming and finding a room in a decent hotel on the spot, especially during the high season from November to March, is not the best idea. It is warm here throughout the year (the average annual temperature is 27.7C) and the tourist season here lasts all year round, however, it is usually customary to distinguish three seasons a year that differ from each other in weather conditions:

• 🌞 It is best to go in the high dry season from November to March. This is the perfect time to relax in Fukuoka, and therefore many tourists rush here during this season. The weather is most favorable at this time: not too hot temperature and at the same time low precipitation and low humidity. The downside of this season is that prices for hotels and air travel are rising, it is often difficult to find a free hotel room at this time. Therefore, it is recommended to book a hotel in Fukuoka for this time, preferably a few months or at least a few weeks in advance.

• ⛅ You can go from April to June in the hot season. This time is also suitable for travel, including for a beach holiday, but it is very hot and frequent rains occur. Which is good, in the hot season, hotel prices are slightly reduced. You can safely go to Fukuoka during this period if it doesn't work out at other times.

• 🌧 Do not go from July to October in the doge season. Despite the fact that it is still warm at this time, a huge amount of precipitation falls. How to get to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is located far in the south of Vietnam, it is the southernmost of the major resorts in Vietnam (Phu Quoc on the map of Vietnam). The main "transshipment point" in order to get to Phu Quoc is Ho Chi Minh City. • From cities in Russia and other countries. It is usually cheaper to fly to Ho Chi Minh City by a separate ticket, and then transfer to a domestic flight to Fukuoka. You can also fly to Hanoi or Nha Trang, but most often it is more expensive than via Ho Chi Minh City. There are also ready-made international flights to Phu Quoc without a transfer in Vietnam, but it comes out more expensive.
• From Ho Chi Minh City. It's best to fly, there are a lot of flights and inexpensive if you buy in advance, 1 hour on the way. It is cheaper to take a bus to the city of Rach Gia (Rach Gia) or Hatien (Ha Tien), and there you can transfer to the ferry to Fukuoka, but you won't save a lot of money, but the whole day and a lot of difficulties.
• From Mui Ne. By bus or transfer (buy at a hotel or street travel agency) to Ho Chi Minh City Airport, and from there by plane. It is possible again by land to Ratja or Hatien, but this is with a transfer through Ho Chi Minh City and will take two days.
• From Nha Trang. There are no direct flights, but you can buy ready-made flights with a transfer in Ho Chi Minh City. Transportation in Fukuoka and how to get around

If you plan not just to lie on the beach, but to actively move around Fukuoka to get acquainted with its interesting places and sights, relax on distant wild beaches, and just spend time, you can't do without transport. To do this, you can rent a motorcycle, car or bicycle in Fukuoka, travel by local buses or use a taxi.

Phu Quoc is a huge island, so you certainly shouldn't expect to be able to see something from the sights on foot. Nevertheless, within the limits of individual resorts and beaches, you can move here on foot. And what's cool, unlike some mainland resorts, it's even comfortable to walk here, because there are sidewalks and even whole walking areas. Well, if you want to walk along the hiking trails, then that's enough. You can go to one of the waterfalls, to the observation deck on the mountain and much more.

The new VinBus bus service in Fukuoka is just a bomb. After all, if you suddenly don't know, there used to be no public transport here at all. But the most important thing is that it's also free!!! And besides, some routes run even at night!!!

Fukuoka attractions, what to see and what to do

Phu Quoc Island, first of all, is deservedly known for its serene beach holidays and well-developed infrastructure. But in addition to the clean beautiful beaches on the island there are some attractions. Of course, you should not expect that after visiting Fukuoka, you will be able to get to know and understand the history and culture of Vietnam to some extent, because there are almost no historical sights and temples here. To do this, you will have to visit completely different places in the country. But, nevertheless, there is a certain minimum of attractions and entertainment. And there are especially many amusement parks here, and in this matter Phu Quoc surpassed all other resorts in Vietnam.

One of the main attractions of the island is its nature. It impresses with its splendor and still pristine.
