Vietnam's climate: why weather is different everywhere
Before packing for a trip to Vietnam, it's worth figuring out exactly when to go. Even though Vietnam is much smaller than Russia, weather conditions during the same season can vary wildly from one area to another. What's more, you might be surprised to learn that despite the common belief that it's warm year-round, snow actually falls in some places. This is especially true for the popular mountain resort of Sapa, where snow falls on the slopes during winter months. So when it comes to Vietnam, the right question is not just "When to go to Vietnam?" but "When and where to go to Vietnam?"
Another common misconception is about the rainy season. Just like the weather in general, the rainy season happens at different times in different regions, so statements like "The rainy season in Vietnam falls in such-and-such months" are way too simplistic and not accurate.
Here's why weather varies so much across Vietnam: the country stretches more than 1,500 kilometers from north to south. For comparison, that's like driving from Moscow to Sochi – except the sea would be on your right the whole time. While one end of the country is sunny and perfect for the beach, the other end might be getting heavy rain or even storms at the same time. That's why the Vietnamese vacation season is always about not just "when" but also "where."

What to pack for the rainy season
If your trip falls during the rainy season (especially in the south from May to October), don't panic: rains are usually brief and don't ruin your vacation. However, to stay comfortable, we recommend bringing:
- A light raincoat or umbrella – handy for sudden downpours.
- A waterproof case for your phone and documents – humidity and tropical downpours can catch you off guard.
- Non-slip shoes – wet asphalt and tiles get slippery.
- A change of clothes – if you get wet, you can always change.
- Insect repellent – mosquito activity increases after rains.
Where and when to vacation in Vietnam
In winter (Dec-Feb): Where to go for sun – and where not to
Winter in southern Vietnam (Phan Thiet, Mui Ne, Vung Tau, Phu Quoc) means dry, warm weather – perfect for the beach. But resorts in the center and north (Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, Halong Bay) are best avoided at this time: it's the rainy season, typhoons are possible, and in the north (Sapa), it can even snow. So if you're planning a vacation from December to February, your choice should be the southern resorts.
In spring (Mar-May): Perfect time for the center and north
Spring is a great time to visit the central and northern regions. Da Nang, Hoi An, Hanoi, and Halong Bay enjoy comfortable weather, the sea warms up, and there's little rain. The south is also nice at this time, but by May, the rainy season begins, though showers are still brief. This is the best time for sightseeing and beach vacations across the country.
In summer (Jun-Aug): Rainy season in the south, beaches in the center
Summer brings the rainy season to southern resorts (Phu Quoc, Phan Thiet), but rains are usually short, and there's still plenty of sun. However, the sea can be rough. Meanwhile, the center (Da Nang, Hoi An) and north (Halong Bay) enjoy sunny weather – this is the ideal time to go there. If you don't mind brief showers, the south is also fine, especially with lower prices.
In autumn (Sep-Nov): Shoulder season and typhoons in the center
Autumn is a transitional period. In the south, the rains end, and the weather becomes comfortable, especially from November. But in the center (Nha Trang, Da Nang), there's a high risk of typhoons and prolonged rains, so it's best to avoid these resorts. The north is still warm in September–October, but gets cooler by November. The best choice in autumn is the southern islands (Phu Quoc, Con Dao) and the southern coast.
The best year-round resorts: where bad weather is rarely a problem
The only truly year-round resorts in Vietnam for beach vacations are the southern ones: Phan Thiet (Mui Ne), Vung Tau, Phu Quoc Island, and Con Dao Island. But even these have high and low seasons. Fortunately, the low season (driven by the rainy season) isn't too bad in these parts: rains are usually brief and come in the afternoon, and there's almost always enough sun and warmth. However, the wind can create big waves, making swimming sometimes impossible. But the upside of the low season is lower prices on tourist services.
