Dien Bien Phu (DBP, Dien Bien Phu) is the capital city of the province of the same name in northwestern Vietnam, 450 kilometers from Hanoi and on the border with Laos (Laocai on the map). This is one of the largest cities in this part of the country, its population is more than 100 thousand people.

In March and May 1954, a grand battle took place here, as a result of which the French colonial regime in Vietnam ended. It is these events that the city can be interesting to rare tourists who appear here. Dien Bien Phu is also notable for the fact that a large number of ethnic minorities of North Vietnam live here, but here they make up more than half of the population.

Dien Bien Phu is a popular bus route from Sapa and Hanoi in Laos to the cities of Luang Prabang, Muang Khua, through the border crossing located 10 kilometers away. Most often, tourists follow through the city to Laos without stopping. But if you have to spend the night here to change the bus or just for the sake of exploring the town, in the city you will find the necessary minimum conditions: a couple of dozen hotels and hostels, cafes, a shopping center. There is nothing special for tourists here, very few residents know English.

How to get to Dien Bien Phu

Dien Bien Phu can be reached by plane from Hanoi, bus from Hanoi, Sapa, Laos, Haiphong and other cities in northern Vietnam, as well as from Laos. If you need to know how to get to Laos from Sapa via Dien Bien Phu, see here.

The city has an airport where there are two flights from Hanoi Daily, there are no more flights. The airport is located almost in the city itself, the center of it can be reached even on foot in 20 minutes (airport on the map).

Unfortunately, tourist buses do not go here, only local buses. These buses are comfortable and comfortable, some of them are sleeping, but it is inconvenient that tickets for them need to be bought at bus stations, and departures are also from bus stations (bus station on the map). The exception is tickets from Sapa, which are sold in travel agencies of the city. Here's the schedule information we've been able to gather (as of early 2019)::

• Sapa and Laos to Dien Bien Phu. The bus from Laokai departs at 17:30, and picks up additional passengers from Sapa at about 18:30. Cost 250,000 VND (9.8 USD, see all about Vietnam money and exchange rate) when buying at the bus station.
• Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu. Buses depart from My Dinh and Yen Ghia station at 17:30 – 19:00 (night), cost from 300 000 VND (11.76 USD).
• From Dien Bien Phu to Muang Khoa at 05:30, 115,000 VND (4.51 USD)
• From Dien Bien Phu to Udomxay at 06:00, 230 000 (9.01 USD)
• From Dien Bien Phu to Luang Nam Tha at 06:30 and 07:30, 350,000 (13.72 USD)
