Want to see not just Vietnam, but its soul? Head to Hue — the former imperial capital where time has frozen among palace walls, tombs hidden in the hills, and the quiet flow of the Perfume River. This is not a beach resort, but a place where every stone tells a story of the Nguyen Dynasty. Our guide, based on personal experience, will help you plan an independent trip to Hue in 2026: from choosing the best season to creating the perfect itinerary.

Holiday in Hue and why come here
The essence of Hue: history, geography and spirit of the imperial capital
Hue is not just a point on the map between Da Nang and Hanoi. It is a place of power, a former capital where the Nguyen dynasty emperors moved the throne in 1802 to found a new, unified Vietnam. For 143 years, the fates of the country were decided here, 13 emperors ruled from here. Yes, the political capital was later moved to Hanoi, but Hue forever remained the spiritual and cultural heart of Vietnam. This status is felt in every stone of the Imperial Citadel.
The city lies on both sides of the Perfume River (Huong, Song Huong). The poetic name, according to legend, arose from the herbs and flowers growing in its upper reaches, whose scent is felt during the flood season. This is not just a waterway, but the main axis around which life was built: imperial boats glided along it to pagodas, and today tourist cruises set off on it.
It is this unique concentration of history that led to the Complex of Hue Monuments becoming one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Vietnam in 1993. People come here not for "holidays in general," but for a very specific, deep feeling of touching a heritage that lives not in textbooks, but in the walls of the citadel, in the layout of the tombs, in the sounds of the court music "Nha Nhac", also protected by UNESCO.
Holiday in Hue today: from citadel to parties on Walking Street
If you think that a trip to Hue is only a tour of an open-air museum, you will be pleasantly surprised. Over the past 10 years, the city has made a huge leap, learning not only to carefully preserve the past but also to offer travelers vivid modern experiences. Today, a holiday here is an intelligent balance of three components.
1. Immersion in history (mandatory program). This is the foundation. Imperial Citadel with its Forbidden Purple City, tombs of rulers scattered among the hills (especially impressive Khai Dinh and Tu Duc), and Thien Mu Pagoda — must-see. This requires at least one full day. This is the very "reason" to come.
2. Relaxation and contemplation (the city's tone). Hue — not Hanoi, there is no frantic pace here. After visiting the palaces, it is worth just strolling along the waterfront at sunset when the bridges and facades are illuminated, or taking a leisurely boat trip. Be sure to try the royal cuisine ("ap lan") — this is not street fast food, but complex, sophisticated dishes that were served at the imperial court.
3. Vibrant nightlife (the main surprise!). This is what has changed dramatically. If earlier the city quieted down in the evening, now its heart beats on Walking Street (Vo Thi Sau). This is a whole block of bars, pubs, karaoke, and open-air dance floors where both tourists and local youth have fun. It sounds paradoxical, but after a day spent among ancient tombs, you might find yourself at a trendy party. This contrast is modern Hue.
What about the sea? Yes, Thuan An Beach 12 km away is a great place to change the scenery for half a day, swim, and eat seafood. But this is a pleasant bonus, not the purpose of the trip. Hue's main wealth is on land.
Bottom line: Modern Hue is 2-3 days of a rich program where history does not contradict comfort and fun. It will suit a thoughtful traveler who appreciates culture but does not mind getting vivid modern emotions after a "mental" load. We have seen it change and can say with confidence: today it is one of the most balanced and interesting cities in central Vietnam.

Infrastructure in Hue and how everything works here
Both city and tourist infrastructure are well developed in Hue. The city has public transport, large shopping centers, supermarkets and markets, a major hospital. Tourist infrastructure is concentrated in a compact tourist area on Le Loi, Hung Vuong, Chu Van An, Nguyen Cong Tru and Pham Ngu Lao streets, and here you will find everything from motorbike rental to tours or tickets to anywhere in Vietnam (Hue tourist area on the map). Even if you don't stay in this area, you can go to the hotel reception and they will organize everything for you.
Bank cards, currency exchange
There are ATMs in Hue, cards are accepted almost everywhere. However, when paying in small private stores and travel agencies, 3-5% is added to the cost when paying by card. This is a common practice in Vietnam, even in hotels, so it's better to clarify before paying so there are no unpleasant surprises.
Mir cards do not work in Hue; there are no points of sale or ATMs that accept them here. Union Pay cards from Russian banks not under sanctions work on par with Visa and Mastercard for payment via terminals, but do not work for online payments or local apps. We talk more about using cards and ATMs in a separate updated guide: Cards and ATMs in Vietnam: which ones work, how to use them advantageously, etc.
However, cash is indispensable here. In markets, travel agencies, ticket offices at attractions, transport, and many other places, only cash dong is accepted. You can exchange dollars, euros, and yuan for dong in trade shops and travel agencies in the tourist area, but the rate there is not very favorable.
Traditionally in Vietnam, it is better to exchange money at jewelry shops and pharmacies; the rate is better and higher than the official exchange rate (for new dollars) or as close as possible to it for old-style dollars and euros. We can recommend a jewelry store with an excellent rate at 207 Ba Trieu Street, operating under the sign Kim Tin Duy Mong. This is near the Go! shopping center and hypermarket (former Big C) and about one and a half kilometers from the tourist area (on the map). But there you will get a really high rate.
For comparison, here are the rates on one day:
- Old-style dollars at this jewelry store – 25,500
- Old-style dollars in the tourist area – 25,000 (1.9% lower)
- New-style dollars at this jewelry store – 26,200
- Old-style dollars in the tourist area – 25,700 (1.9% lower)
There are also several jewelry shops near the Voncom shopping center, and this is only a 10-minute walk from the tourist area (on the map). We haven't checked the rate there, but it might well be excellent, so you can check.
An even higher rate is offered in Da Nang at exchange offices near Han market and others, so if you are traveling via Da Nang, it makes sense to exchange cash there. We talked about exchange points in our Da Nang guide. The exchange rate at the airport is noticeably lower; it's better to exchange a minimal amount for a taxi and the first days of stay there.
When exchanging cash currency in Vietnam, we have been following a simple algorithm for many years:
- If the rate offered for new dollars is higher than the official exchange rate, we exchange.
- If the rate offered for old-style dollars is not lower than 1.5% of the official exchange rate, we exchange.
- If the rate offered for euros is not lower than 0.5% of the official exchange rate, we exchange.
- If the rate offered is lower than these figures, we bargain or look for another place.
All about where is best to exchange, what rate and everything else from our personal experience we tell in an updated guide: Currency and money in Vietnam: everything tourists need to know.
Shopping in Hue
There are two large shopping centers with big supermarkets in Hue: GO! (former Big C) and Vincom Plaza. One is located not far from the tourist area, you can walk in 10-20 minutes. Many small chain supermarkets WinMart, Bach Hoa Xanh, K-Mart, and the like.
Fruits, vegetables, fresh seafood can be bought at the local Cho Cong market. It is only a 5-minute walk from the center of the tourist area (on the map). This is a covered market, but the main trade in the freshest and cheapest fruits is from street stalls on the adjacent Nguyen Lo Trach street. For example, here we bought tangerines for 5,000 dong per kilogram, rambutan for 18,000 per kilogram. We have never encountered such low prices for seasonal fruits anywhere!!!
To buy souvenirs and original gifts, we advise you to go to the Hue exhibition hall (Truyen Thong Hue) on the Perfume River waterfront. Quality local goods are gathered here: from handmade straw hats to honey and local alcohol. You can find more unique and quality souvenirs compared to regular markets, and although the prices are a bit higher, they remain reasonable.
Internet and mobile communication
In Hue, there are official mobile operator stores where you can buy a SIM card registered in your name with your passport. But it's quite long and tedious, you could easily lose a whole hour. Moreover, we did not find any official stores in the tourist area, the nearest one we found was on Hai Ba Trung street more than two kilometers from the area.
Therefore, as an alternative, you can buy a tourist SIM card, pre-registered and activated in another person's name. Such SIM cards are sold in travel agencies, trade shops, at the airport, and even in hotels. This is generally a convenient option for a short trip (1-2 weeks), although more expensive.
For a trip of a month or more, we still recommend spending a little time and registering a SIM card in your name. More about buying a local SIM card and what tariffs are available, we told in our guide, read it and you will know everything.
Finally, an option we have tried ourselves and can confidently recommend – purchasing a local SIM card online. You can buy a physical SIM card online and pick it up at the airport upon arrival, or get an e-sim. At the time of writing, picking up a physical SIM card at the airport is possible at Hanoi airport and Da Nang; at Hue airport, this function is not yet available. But perhaps the situation will change, check and order a SIM card via the links:
- Buy esim for Vietnam on trip.com
- Buy a physical card on trip.com with delivery to the hotel or pick-up at Da Nang airport
Where to eat in Hue: street food and restaurants
As in any place in Vietnam, in Hue there is no problem finding where to eat tasty and inexpensively. You have a choice of local eateries with plastic tables and chairs, tourist cafes, restaurants with a view of the river. There are also chain restaurants KFC, Lotteria (South Korean chain), Jollibee (Philippine chain) in Hue. We did not find international McDonalds and Burger King here.
The price of food, as everywhere in Vietnam, is very affordable. These are starting (minimum) prices for reference and budget planning?
- Breakfast at the hotel (omelette, toast, coffee or tea to choose from) – from 80,000 dong / 3.04 USD.
- Eat at a cheap local cafe (one rice dish with drink) – from 60,000 dong / 2.28 USD.
- Eat at a tourist cafe in the tourist area – from 100,000 dong / 3.8 USD.
- Eat at a chain restaurant (set lunch) – from 80,000 dong / 3.04 USD.
- Dinner at a restaurant with a river view with seafood – from 400,000 dong / 15.21 USD.
As for the choice of specific establishments, there is no point in giving recommendations here, because there are so many cafes and restaurants that you will easily find something to suit any taste and budget while walking near your hotel or wherever you are. If you are worried that the price-quality ratio might be poor, you can do as we always do: read reviews on Google Maps and pay attention to the establishment's overall rating.
But perhaps we should note a few options that we recommend visiting:
- Starbucks Cafe - Song Huong on the Perfume River. A floating coffee shop with the best view of the river in a famous building resembling a lotus flower.
- Dinner cruise on the Perfume River. Evening cruises on boats from the pier on the waterfront depart every evening; tickets can be bought on the spot or in advance at travel agencies. The food is not very good, but it's an unusual experience and great views of the night citadel and waterfront.
- Walking Street (Vo Thi Sau street) in the tourist area. There are a huge number of bars and clubs here, where people primarily relax and drink beer, but you can also eat.
- Pedestrian street Hai Ba Trung. A new pedestrian zone a couple of kilometers from the tourist area and not far from the waterfront. Cafes here work every evening, but at full capacity only from Friday to Sunday from 6:00 PM to 12:00 AM, when the street turns into a traditional Asian night market with street fast food, souvenir sales, and performances by artists.
Where to stay in Hue: areas and hotels
In Hue, there are two main types of accommodation: in the city itself and in remote resort areas by the sea. For most tourists, especially first-time visitors to the city, it is optimal to stay within the city limits — close to all infrastructure, tour agencies, cafes, and main attractions.
Accommodation prices range from very budget to comfortable. A room with air conditioning in a guesthouse can be found from 300,000 dong (about 11.41 USD) per night, and accommodation in a hotel by the river with a view of the historical center starts from 1,000,000 dong (38.02 USD). To find the best option for price and location, it is convenient to use trusted booking sites or the search form.

Key areas: how to make a choice
All the variety of options in the city boils down to two main areas, each with its own character.
-
1. Historical center and waterfront (Riverside)
This is the most atmospheric and picturesque area, located along the Perfume River (Huong) and next to the Imperial Citadel. It is quiet, beautiful, with hotels and restaurants overlooking the water. Ideal for couples, families, and those who value comfort and proximity to history. The main downside is that prices here are the highest in the city, and nightlife and tourist infrastructure are practically absent. -
2. Budget tourist quarter (Pham Ngu Lao street area)
A small but very lively area — the center for independent travelers. Dozens of guesthouses, hostels, travel agencies, cafes, and motorbike rentals are concentrated here. Accommodation prices are minimal, the atmosphere is youthful and international. This is the best choice for backpackers and anyone who wants to save money and be in the center of events. Disadvantages: it can be noisy in the evenings, and it is a 20-30 minute walk or a ride to the historical attractions.
This is what a standard room in a budget guesthouse looks like: clean, simple, has everything you need. -
Separately, consider beach hotels in the surroundings, for example, on Thuan An Beach 15 km from the city. This is an option for those who want to combine Hue sightseeing with a beach holiday. However, without rented transport or a taxi, you will be quite isolated from the city infrastructure.
These are the main guidelines. To make an informed choice, see the boundaries of the areas on the map and learn all the nuances (including important life hacks on how not to overpay at check-in), read our detailed guide: "Areas of Hue: where is best to stay and which hotel to choose".
Weather in Hue, tourist seasons
Unfortunately, Hue is not very lucky with the weather. Due to the terrain formed by the Truong Son mountains located south of the city, which collect almost all the clouds from the surrounding area, it is very often foggy, drizzling, and heavy rains are frequent.
Traditionally, in Southeast Asian countries, two seasons are distinguished: rainy season and dry season. To these seasons in Hue, we can also add a flood season, when there is so much rain that everything around is flooded. Theoretically, Hue can be visited in any season, because for a true connoisseur of historical sights, rain is not an obstacle, just in the rainy season you should be prepared for more frequent rains than in the dry season.
- 🌞 Dry season (high season) lasts from February to August. This is the most successful time to visit the city, although even at this time rains and fogs also occur. In the summer months (June-August), the weather is very hot and hard to bear. The ideal time to visit is from February to April.
- ☔ Rainy season (low season) in Hue runs from September to January. The average temperature at this time is 20C, and sometimes can even drop to 9C. It wouldn't hurt to bring warm and waterproof clothing, and you definitely can't do without an umbrella or raincoat.
- 🌀 So-called "flood season", when the amount of precipitation reaches its maximum and everything around is simply flooded with water, occurs in September, October, and November. This is the most undesirable time to visit the city.
There are other variants of dividing seasons in Hue, including the more familiar four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter). However, we have characterized only three seasons, as they more correspond to tourist seasons.

How and what transport to get to Hue
Hue is one of the important transport hubs of central Vietnam; it is not difficult to get here. The city has an international airport, a railway station, a large bus station, and comfortable tourist buses bring people here from different cities and resorts.
We have a separate guide with all the details about how to get to Hue independently, we advise you to read it if you want to know everything. And here are brief instructions for general understanding by direction:
- From cities of Russia, CIS, and other countries. It is best to fly directly to Hue airport on an international flight, but at the moment, despite its international status, only domestic flights are operated. The nearest international airport where international flights actually fly is Da Nang. From Da Nang, it is easy to get here by taxi or bus in a couple of hours.
- From Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. It is best to fly (1 hour and 1 hour 3 minutes respectively). If you buy tickets in advance several weeks ahead, the prices are very affordable. Overland by bus (cheapest), or by train (more comfortable, but noticeably more expensive than bus).
- From Da Nang. Tourist and scheduled buses and minivans run frequently and many times throughout the day. The easiest way is to come to the Da Nang bus station and buy tickets for the nearest departure. There is also a train, but this is less convenient because you need to adjust to the schedule.
- From Hoi An. There are direct tourist buses by Hanh Café (3-4 hours on the way), or scheduled buses with a transfer in Da Nang.
- From Nha Trang. From Nha Trang by bus or train. There are no direct flights, but you can fly with a connection via Hanoi (but that's a big detour), or fly to Da Nang airport, and from there by taxi or bus.
- From Mui Ne and Phan Thiet. There is a direct sleeper bus (22 hours), or you can get to Ho Chi Minh City airport and then fly, or get to Binh Thuan railway station (this is the former Muong Man station) and there take a train to Hue.
- From Phu Quoc. Theoretically, there is an overland route, but in practice, it is only reasonable to fly with a connection in Ho Chi Minh City.
You can buy plane tickets, including cheap domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Hue, on sites like Aviasales.ru or Trip.com. Here is a selection of the cheapest flights:

Transport in Hue: how to get around the city and surroundings
The choice of transport in Hue depends on your plans. If the goal is to see the Imperial Citadel and central attractions, you can manage on foot. For a deeper independent exploration of the city and its picturesque surroundings (emperors' tombs), transport will be needed. Let's consider all options.
Transport rental: freedom of movement
This option gives complete autonomy and control over time.
- Motorbike: The most popular and affordable option. Rental costs from 120,000 dong per day, there are many rental shops. Usually, no deposit is required and no license is asked for, although by law it is needed. Read more about renting a motorbike in Vietnam here.
- Bicycle: Suitable for short trips around the city. Rental — from 50,000 dong, but there are few rental points. For long trips (for example, to the tombs, which are 8-10 km away) consider the heat and distances.
- Car: Prices are high, from $30 per day without a driver and from $50 — with a driver. In Hue, they may be even higher than at popular resorts.
Taxis and apps: convenience on demand
A convenient way to get from stations or the airport, as well as for trips to remote attractions. In addition to calling by phone or through the hotel, apps Grab and Xanh SM work.
Approximate rates for budget planning:
- Airport – center: from 200,000 dong (7.6 USD)
- Railway station – center: about 40,000 dong (1.52 USD)
- Center – Tomb of Tu Duc: from 90,000 dong (3.42 USD)
- Center – Tomb of Minh Mang: from 190,000 dong (7.22 USD)
Excursions: the most carefree option
Ideal if you don't want to deal with logistics. There are many street travel agencies in the city; excursions can also be booked online or at the hotel. In addition to sightseeing tours around Hue, there are tours to Da Nang, Hoi An, Phong Nha, and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Other ways: buses and rickshaws
City buses run on routes (payment to the conductor, from 8,000 dong), but information about the schedule is practically inaccessible to tourists.
Tourist Hop-on Hop-off bus (CitySightseeingHue) has mixed reviews: often runs irregularly, no Russian audio guide.
Cyclo rickshaws — this is more of an entertainment and a short ride through the tourist area, not transport. The cost starts from 300,000 dong (11.41 USD).
These are just the main points. Read the full guide with all details, rental nuances, price comparisons, and useful links in our detailed guide: "How to get around Hue: all types of city transport".
What to see in Hue: the main things about the imperial capital
Hue is the heart of historical Vietnam, the former imperial capital, where every palace, pagoda, and tomb tells its own story. But it's not just an open-air museum. The city offers a diverse holiday: from exploring the heritage of the Nguyen Dynasty to evening entertainment on pedestrian streets and relaxation in nature in the surroundings.
The core of any trip: citadel and tombs
Acquaintance with Hue traditionally begins with two key points:
- Imperial Citadel (Imperial City): a grandiose complex listed as a UNESCO site. Behind the fortress walls lie palaces, temples, and gardens. Allow 2-3 hours for viewing. A ticket costs 200,000 dong, but it's better to buy a combined ticket with a visit to two tombs.
- Tombs of emperors: located in picturesque parks 7-20 km from the city. The most impressive:
For independent visits to the tombs, it is most convenient to rent a motorbike (from 120,000 dong/day) or use a taxi. Another option is to join a group tour, which are sold in numerous street agencies. To save time and immediately compare programs and prices, you can look at offers on trusted online aggregators with reviews:
Relaxation, walks, and entertainment in the city
After a rich historical program, you can relax and feel the modern rhythm of Hue.
- Pedestrian zones: Be sure to stroll along the Perfume River embankment with a view of the illuminated bridge. For a livelier atmosphere, head to Walking Street (Vo Thi Sau) — the epicenter of nightlife with bars and music.
- River cruise: A popular entertainment is a boat trip with the possibility to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda (symbol of the city) or combine with dinner and a traditional show.
- Museums and pagodas: Art museums, several ancient pagodas (Bao Quoc, Tu Dam), and An Dinh Palace in European style are compactly located in the center.
Nature and relaxation in the surroundings
If you have an extra day, it's worth going outside the city.
- Beach holiday: 15 km to the northeast is the sandy Thuan An Beach with cafes and sunbeds — a great option for a change of scenery.
- Hot springs: For relaxation, you can go to the Kobi Onsen hot springs (former My An) 7 km from the city. Entrance with bathing in public baths costs from 180,000 dong.
- Nature and villages: On the way to the tombs, you can stop by the very photogenic incense village Thuy Xuan. For active recreation, trips to Bach Ma National Park (40 km) or to Elephant Springs Suoi Voi (50 km) are suitable.
Hue also serves as a convenient base for longer day trips, for example, to the Phong Nha caves or the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
These are just the key points. To plan the trip perfectly, with ready-made routes for 1, 2, and 3 days, a detailed description of each place with prices, photos, and tips, read our complete guide: "Sights of Hue: what to see and do".
