Da Nang Airport (DAD): Complete Guide for Tourists

General Information

Da Nang International Airport (Danang International Airport, code DAD) – these are the main air gates in central Vietnam. Located in Da Nang city, almost in its very center (airport on the map).

Through it you can reach Da Nang itself, the town of Hoi An, as well as Hue. Hue has its own airport, but few flights operate there, so sometimes it is more convenient and cheaper to fly to Da Nang and then get to Hue by bus, train, or taxi from here.

Da Nang has frequent regular air connections with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, Haiphong. There are many international flights from Asian countries: from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, Macau, Tokyo, Siem Reap, Hong Kong and many other cities. From Russia, theoretically, you can fly on charter flights by Nordwind Airlines seasonally from Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk and Ulan-Ude, but especially don't count on this option, as this route is not launched every season, and most often is not available for free sale. Therefore, it is much more convenient and cheaper to get from Russia to Da Nang with a layover via third countries, or via Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

Airport Layout, Terminals

In 2011, the airport underwent a major renovation, and a new modern terminal was opened. In 2017, an even newer and more modern terminal was launched, now there are two terminals here: T1 – domestic, and T2 – international. Their exits are next to each other, you can get from one to the other in 10 minutes on foot. At night from about 3 to 5 a.m., the terminals close for a break, all passengers are asked to leave.

It has everything tourists need: cafes and restaurants, currency exchange, duty-free shops when departing on international flights, ATMs, travel agencies, SIM card sales, car rental, business lounge. There are no luggage storage facilities.

There is free WiFi. To connect to the Internet, you need to go through a conditional registration.

Currency exchange at Da Nang Airport is carried out at an acceptable rate, sometimes even more favorable than in banks in Da Nang and Hoi An. We only encountered a better rate than at the airport in jewelry stores or if you look well in different banks, but the difference is not that great, no more than 40,000 VND when exchanging 100 dollars. You can exchange all major currencies at Da Nang Airport: dollars, euros, pounds, Australian dollars, Singapore dollars, Canadian dollars, Thai baht and some others. Exchange offices at the airport are located in the arrivals hall, where you will end up after collecting your luggage and passing through the customs corridors in both terminals. ATMs are also located in this area.

Where to Buy a SIM Card at Da Nang Airport

If you couldn't or didn't have time to arrange a SIM card online, that's not a problem either. In the arrivals hall there are counters with currency exchange and SIM card sales. True, they are sold with a small markup and are more expensive than when ordering online, but also affordable. Hotels at Da Nang Airport

If you need to rest during a layover between flights or in case of a delay, there are many hotels and hostels near the airport, as the airport is located almost in the very center of Da Nang. You cannot sleep overnight on benches at the airport, as it closes for a couple of hours at night from approximately 03:00 to 05:00. You can even walk to hotels near the airport with light luggage, or take a taxi from 25,000 VND.

How to Get from Da Nang Airport to the City Center and to Hoi An

Da Nang Airport is located almost in the center of the city, which greatly facilitates ways to get from it to your accommodation in Da Nang or Hoi An (airport on the map). You can even walk to some hotels in the central part of Da Nang if you, for example, just need to spend the night after the flight.

Here are other available options:

• From the Airport to Your Hotel in Da Nang

  • Metered taxi (Mai Linh, Vinasun): Taxi stands are located right at the exit from the terminal. A trip to My Khe Beach or the tourist area will cost from 100,000 VND (3.8 USD). Important: only get into cars of these trusted companies and make sure the driver turns on the meter.
  • Grab, XanhSm, Maxim (Uber analog): Download the apps in advance (registration is also available on Russian SIM cards). There is free Wi-Fi at the airport, connect, order a car or even a motorbike. The price is fixed in the app, you'll see it immediately when ordering, no need to bargain. Pay with cash at the end of the trip, or you can link a card, but Russian cards do not work.
  • Pre-booked transfer: Perfect if you are tired after the flight, a large group, or with children. The driver will meet you with a sign in the arrivals hall and take you to the hotel door. The price is known in advance. For such cases, we use services like Kiwitaxi.
  • Rent a car/bike right at the airport: Yes, you can. But we don't recommend doing this right after a long flight. It's better to get to the hotel, rest, and the next day calmly rent transport. Remember that for car rental you need an International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • City bus from the airport: For 8,000 VND you can get to the center on buses No. 06 and No. 10.

• From the Airport to Hoi An or Hue

  What to do if your hotel is in Hoi An or Hue? You don't have to go to the center of Da Nang first. You can take a taxi/transfer directly to the location. The trip to Hoi An takes about an hour and costs from 300,000 VND (11.4 USD). To Hue – about 2 hours and from 1,000,000 VND (37.99 USD).

  If you are looking for a budget option, then get ready for hassle with transfers according to one of the options:

  • Taxi to Da Nang bus station + bus to Hue or Hoi An.
  • Take route No. 06 at the airport. Get off at the first stop after the Dragon Bridge (stop on the map). At this stop, wait for bus 02/LK-02 or No. 16. Go to the final stop (final stop on the map) and transfer there to route LK-02.

  But our opinion is that for a first visit, or if you are traveling with suitcases, it's better not to complicate things. This option is only suitable for experienced travelers with backpacks.

• Is there luggage storage at Da Nang Airport?

  No, there is no left luggage storage at the airport. This is the most common problem for tourists with a long layover or early hotel check-in. If you need to leave your belongings, you will have to either carry them with you or look for an alternative: some hotels in the city (not at the airport) may accept luggage before check-in for a separate fee. We advise planning for such situations in advance.

• Can you spend the night at the airport? What to do during a night layover?

  No, you cannot spend the night in the terminals. The airport completely closes for a night break approximately from 03:00 to 05:00. All passengers are asked to leave the building. If you have a night layover or arrive late at night, there are two options:

  1. Book a hotel near the airport. Many are 5-10 minutes away by taxi (see the hotels section), some can even be reached on foot.
  2. Go to the center of Da Nang. Taxis or Grab work at night, you can go to your hotel or any other and wait for check-in there. This is better than sleeping on the street.

• How to get between terminals T1 (domestic flights) and T2 (international)?

  The terminals are next to each other, 100 meters apart, that's 5-7 minutes on foot following the signs. If you have a transfer from an international flight to a domestic one (or vice versa), just follow the signs "Terminal 1" / "Terminal 2" or "Domestic Flights" / "International Flights".

• Where is it better to exchange money: at the airport or in the city?

  Our advice: exchange a small amount at the airport (50-100 dollars) to have money for taxis and first expenses, and then look for a better rate in the city at jewelry shops near Han Market or in the tourist area. Why?

  • At the airport the rate is indeed acceptable (often better than in banks), no commission. It's safe and convenient right after arrival. Exchange offices (in the T2 arrivals hall) accept dollars, euros, rubles, Thai baht.
  • In the city (Da Nang/Hoi An) you can find a rate 1-2% better, but you will spend time looking for a reliable exchange office (often these are jewelry stores or Gold shops).

• Is there free Wi-Fi at the airport and how to connect?

  Yes, Wi-Fi is free. The network is called "Da Nang Airport Free WiFi" or similar. After connecting, a page usually opens where you need to press the "Connect" or "Accept" button. The speed is enough for messengers, social networks and calling Grab.

• Do Russian citizens need a visa upon arrival in Da Nang? How to get it?

  Russian citizens do not require a visa to enter Vietnam for stays up to 45 days. You simply go through passport control. No forms, photos or payments are required upon arrival in Da Nang. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months at the time of entry.
