Overview of Ways to Get to Hoi An
The town of Hoi An is located in central Vietnam, 770 kilometers from Hanoi and 800 from Ho Chi Minh City, and 20 kilometers from the nearest large city and resort Da Nang (Hoi An on the map). It is Da Nang that most often is the main entry point for Hoi An, since it houses the main transport hub of central Vietnam: Da Nang International Airport, railway station, and a large bus station where even international buses arrive.
However, this does not mean at all that you will always have to get to Hoi An only via Da Nang. Direct scheduled buses go to Hoi An from major cities and resorts in Vietnam, and in local travel agencies you can buy convenient tourist tickets with transfers between different types of transport and delivery from hotel to hotel or at least from area to area, which is very convenient. In general, transport in Vietnam and in Hoi An in particular is very well developed, so there will be no great difficulties in getting here from anywhere, you just need to plan your route correctly. We will tell you in detail from personal experience how to do this, and for starters, short instructions by destination:
- From Da Nang. With a group or individual tour (currently the most popular way), or independently by taxi, bus, rented transport. Any way you can visit Hoi An from Da Nang within a day.
- From Da Nang airport, railway station or bus station. Taxi from 400,000 dong (30-40 minutes) or with a transfer on city buses for 38,000 dong in total (may take 2-3 hours).
- From cities in Russia, CIS and other countries. It is best to fly directly to Da Nang airport by international flight. But if you can't find tickets or the price doesn't suit you, you can fly to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Nha Trang, and from there by bus, train or again by plane with local airlines.
- From Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Best to fly (1 hour 20 minutes) to Da Nang, and from there by taxi. You can also go overland by direct bus (this is the cheapest, 14 hours travel time), or by train to Da Nang.
- From Nha Trang. There are direct flights from Nha Trang (1 hour) to Da Nang, trains to Da Nang, or a direct bus to Hoi An (10 hours).
- From Da Lat. There are direct flights (1 hour) to Da Nang, or bus (13-14 hours).
- From Mui Ne/Phan Thiet. There are no buses from the Mui Ne resort area to here. There is a direct bus (13-15 hours) from Phan Thiet bus station to Da Nang. Or go to Ho Chi Minh City airport and take a flight to Da Nang there. But taking into account the time to get to the airport, it won't be much faster.
- From Phu Quoc. By plane direct flight 1 hour 45 minutes to Da Nang. There is no point in getting there by land, as it will take at least two days.
- From Hue. There are direct bus routes, you can buy them at travel agencies and hotels, travel time 3 hours.
- From other cities in Vietnam. You can get to Da Nang from almost anywhere, and there transfer to a taxi, and in 30 minutes you'll be in Hoi An.
- From Laos. There are direct buses from Vientiane to Da Nang.

And now we will tell you in detail about all the ways, how and on what to get to Hoi An independently:
To Hoi An with Tours from Da Nang
If you are vacationing in Da Nang, then the most convenient and simple way to visit Hoi An is ready-made day tours. This is one of the most popular tour destinations for tourists.
Tour programs are approximately standard and include or may include:
- Visiting Marble Mountains.
- Visiting My Son ruins (optional only in more expensive tours).
- Visiting pottery village and silk village.
- Walking tour of the city or ride on electric cars.
- Visiting museums of Hoi An architectural park.
- Boat trip on the evening Thu Bon River.
You can find such tours in Da Nang at any street travel agency or hotel, they cost from 500,000 dong. But the problem is that due to the specifics of Da Nang, these are mainly tours in Vietnamese. So be sure to clarify this issue before buying, otherwise you won't understand anything at all. And it's even better to book tours with reviews online: there are guides in different languages, possibility of payment with Russian cards, reviews.
On Rented Transport from Da Nang
If you come for a day from Da Nang or another city on rented transport, then the question arises of where to leave the transport for walking around the center, because it is most convenient and interesting to get around here on foot.
If you came on a motorbike, it's better to leave it at a paid parking lot for 5,000 dong. We saw such a large parking lot on Hai Ba Trung street near the lake, here it is on the map.
Finding a car parking is a bit more difficult. In the center, we came across paid car parks on temple grounds (yes, temples sometimes earn money this way, there's nothing wrong with that). And also many places where you can park for free can be found north of Ly Thuong Kiet street. This street serves as a kind of border between the center and the rest of the calmer and more spacious Hoi An.
To Hoi An by Plane
The nearest international airport is in Da Nang, where several daily flights arrive from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Da Lat, and other cities in Vietnam, as well as flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Siem Reap, Beijing and other cities in Asia.
There are no direct regular flights from Russia and the CIS. Fly via Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or via Asian hubs: Bangkok, Singapore, cities in China.
To avoid overpaying, we always compare prices on aggregators Aviasales and Trip.com. The search engines are good at finding combined options from different airlines. Sometimes it's more profitable to buy one through ticket, and sometimes – two separate ones.

How to Get from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An
Da Nang Airport is located 25 kilometers from Hoi An (airport on the map). The easiest way to get there is by taxi or by ordering a tourist transfer, but if you want to save money, you can also take local buses, although it will take almost a whole day.
-
By Taxi
It's better to order through apps Gram, Maxim, Xanh Sm. At the airport you can buy a SIM card or use free WiFi. A trip through apps will cost from 400,000 dong (15.21 USD). Prices from taxi drivers on the spot are higher: bargain. More about Grab and how to use it
-
By City Bus
An option only for the most experienced and with a backpack, and if you really need to save money. The trip algorithm is as follows:
- Take city route №06 at the airport.
- Get off at the first stop after the Dragon Bridge (stop on the map)
- At this stop, wait for bus 02/LK-02, or №16
- Go to the final stop (final stop on the map) and transfer there to route LK-02.
You can also order a tourist transfer or rent a car. We talked about all this in more detail in a separate instruction "How to get from Da Nang to Hoi An", so we won't repeat it here, read everything via the link.
A convenient and comfortable way to get to Hoi An from the airport is a tourist transfer. This is an analogue of ordering a taxi, but you can arrange and pay for it even at home, and then the driver will meet you upon arrival with a sign and deliver you to the place without any problems or difficulties with language barrier. You can check the price and book through the search form:
To Hoi An by Train
There is no railway station in Hoi An, the nearest one is in Da Nang. You can get to it from Nha Trang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Phan Thiet, Phan Rang, Quy Nhon, etc. There are no direct trains from Sapa and Hai Phong. In general, the route from cities in Vietnam by train to Da Nang and then to Hoi An without stopping for overnight stay in Da Nang does not present any difficulties.
Check the schedule and prices for trains on the official website of Vietnam Railways (dsvn.vn). If you don't figure it out (it's half in Vietnamese, no Russian), then look at the Russian version of 12go.asia.
We have already told in detail about how to get to Da Nang by train and everything about trains in separate instructions, so again we send you to read, so as not to duplicate here:
- How to get to Da Nang by train.
- Da Nang Railway Station.
- How to use trains in Vietnam: complete instruction.
You can get from the railway station to Hoi An in the same ways as from the airport:
-
Taxi - from 400,000 dong.
-
By bus on №16 to the final stop (8000 dong), there transfer to bus LK-02 to Hoi An (30,000).
-
Right after exiting the railway station, across the road to the left, there is a motorbike rental from 130,000 dong per day, and you can rent it right after arrival and go to the desired place.
To Hoi An by Bus
Buses are our favorite way to travel around Vietnam. The bus route network is very developed, prices are affordable, and buses, especially from large carriers, are very comfortable: with air conditioning, reclining seats or individual capsules, with Wi-Fi on board.
Our advice: buy tickets for VIP buses, if such are available for your direction. These are sleeper buses with separate cabins, like a capsule hotel (they are more comfortable than a regular Sleeper Bus). You can even ride in them for two at the price of one ticket, if you really need to save money. We talked about such a bus 🎬 in our video on the channel.
Hoi An does not have its own bus station. Previously, there was a conditional international bus station on a large site not far from the center, where large intercity buses arrived and departed, but now it has been liquidated.
There are such options left:
-
Via Da Nang
Now the bus station closest to Hoi An and the largest in central Vietnam is located in Da Nang (on the map). Therefore, the most reliable option is to go to it. Buses from almost any city in Vietnam and from Laos go here.
From the bus station to Hoi An you can again take a taxi from 400,000 dong, or take city bus №16 to the final stop, and there transfer to LK-02 to Hoi An (the entire transfer for 30,000 dong).
-
Directly to Hoi An on Tourist Buses
Many large buses and minivans of private companies connect Hoi An with popular cities Hue, Nha Trang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Quy Nhon, Mui Ne, Da Lat, Ha Long, Phong Nha and Ninh Binh. These are only routes we ourselves checked or used. But there is no clear schedule, everything depends on seasons and on supply and demand. There is also no full online schedule, so the surest way is to find out everything on the spot in hotels and travel agencies. Just in case, at the end of the page there is a schedule of buses to/from Hoi An, available for online booking.
There is also no single point of departure or arrival in Hoi An for such buses, clarify everything when buying. Some (mostly minivans) deliver to the hotel door, some drop off at their office, and some at the North Bus Station, about it below.
Remember! If you didn't find a bus for your desired direction on the internet – it doesn't mean at all that it doesn't exist. You need to ask at different travel agencies and hotels, look for websites or official pages of carriers in social networks in Vietnamese. In general, searching for schedules and routes in Vietnam is a whole "quest", and how to solve it, we told in detail in our article-instruction "All about buses in Vietnam for travelers"
-
Via the North Bus Station of Hoi An
There is also a north bus station of Hoi An also not far from the center on Le Hong Phong or Nguyen Tat Thanh street (North Bus Station of Hoi An on the map) where bus №1 from Da Nang used to arrive (canceled), and now it is a drop-off and pick-up point for some private and tourist buses. That is, you cannot just come to this bus station and buy a ticket, there is nothing there. But you need to know about it, because you may be brought to this bus station for drop-off, or indicated as a place for departure from Hoi An when buying tickets at travel agencies.
-
Tourist Bus Station in Hoi An
Finally, there is a large tourist bus station in Hoi An on Hai Ba Trung street (North Bus Station of Hoi An on the map). But we will tell you about it, just so you know that it is useless for travelers.
This is a large parking lot where large excursion buses with groups of tourists from Da Nang enter to transfer here to electric cars for a walk around the city, and at the end of the tour back. That is, if you are not buying a tour, this bus station is absolutely useless for you, and don't waste time here looking for ticket offices or schedules.

Transport in Hoi An, How to Get Around the City and Surroundings
On Foot
Hoi An is a small town, and you can explore most of it on foot, unless you settle somewhere on the outskirts or beaches. All that is required for this is a map and the ability to navigate. Download the Organic Maps or Maps.me apps and load the points from our map LINK. It is safe to walk around the city at any time of the day (Hoi An is one of the safest cities in Vietnam).
In the evening, some streets near the river are marked with a "Walking street" sign, and entry to them is strictly prohibited even for bicycles and even for tourists. You may not be allowed into such an area even if you are walking your bicycle, not riding it.
Bicycle Rental
Bicycles are an excellent low-cost way to get around Hoi An. On a bicycle, you can ride not only around the center, but also get to the beach (4 kilometers from the center to the nearest one), ride in the evening along the bustling streets or go to your favorite cafe for dinner.
But, honestly, riding a bicycle in the center is not very convenient now. The streets here are narrow, and now also overcrowded with tourists, especially in the evening. So this is transport more for the outskirts than for the center.
Some hotels offer free bicycle rental for their guests, although from our experience we can say that these may be rusty, beaten-up bikes that are embarrassing to ride.
More or less decent bicycles, even with a child seat or tandems, can be rented for 50,000 dong. There are many rentals, you can easily find them while walking. Especially many bicycles are offered along the main tourist street Bach Dang along the river, near the Hoi An bridge with lanterns. There are entire rows, sometimes with a lock and the phone number of the rental.
Cyclo Rickshaws
This is not a means of transportation to get from point A to point B, but a tourist entertainment. They ride along the old streets of Hoi An in the center, and rarely go beyond it onto the main roads. Evening romantic rides are especially popular.
Cyclo rickshaws "are on duty" everywhere in the center, they themselves will offer you rides at every step. The price for a short ride is from 100,000 dong, but tourists may be offered for 1,000,000, you need to bargain.
Taxi
The Grab and Xanh Sm apps work in Hoi An, theoretically Maxim is available, but you most likely won't wait for a car in it. Taxis with phone call or through reception and payment by meter also work, for example the well-known reliable MaiLinh.
You see the cost of the trip in the app immediately when ordering, payment is in cash at the end of the trip or you can link a card (Russian cards do not work). Prices for reference:
- Within the center of Hoi An – from 40,000 dong.
- From the center to the beach – from 60,000.
- From Hoi An to the center of Da Nang, to the airport or railway station – from 400,000.
Moto-taxi is also available, it is half the price.
To use taxis in Hoi An, we advise you to read articles on the topic:
Motorbike (Scooter) Rental
This is our favorite way! But it's not for trips around the center, there's simply nowhere to go. And for riding around the surroundings, going to Da Nang, Marble Mountains, My Son ruins, Golden Bridge and Ba Na Hill – you can't think of a better option.
You can rent a low-power moped (scooter) in Hoi An from 120,000 dong per day (from 4.56 USD) when renting for one day, and bargain for 80,000 (from 3.04 USD) for several days at street rentals. When renting in hotels or at street travel agencies, they ask for more – from 150,000.
We won't say that rentals are on every corner here. To find them, go straight to Hai Ba Trung street, there are really many rentals there and we always take there. Often, when renting here, they don't even require any deposit, it's enough to just say which hotel you are staying at.
To rent a motorbike, you won't need a license. But on the road, when meeting a police officer, they must be present: an International Driving Permit and category "A" are required. No other categories are suitable.
Before renting a motorbike in Hoi An, read these instructions on the topic and watch our videos about motorbikes:
