    Vacation on Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island – the largest island of Vietnam. It's located in the south of the country, about 45 kilometers off the coast. A large number of small islets are scattered around, which can also be visited during a stay on Phu Quoc.

Phu Quoc is often compared to the popular Thai island of Phuket. They do share some similarities, even in size. However, compared to Phuket, Phu Quoc is more 'wild', less developed, and less built up. There's no abundance of Phuket-style discos, noisy bars, shopping, let alone sex tourism. Even in terms of historical and cultural attractions, Phu Quoc significantly lags behind Phuket. But there's a certain charm in this, otherwise thousands of tourists wouldn't visit the island every year.

Phu Quoc Island is definitely one of Vietnam's most popular resorts. For many tourists who have visited once, it remains a paradise island forever. The resort is known and popular, first and foremost, for its beach vacation. The beaches here are among the most beautiful in Vietnam, and their length is impressive. In 2008, the island and its beaches were named the cleanest and most beautiful in the world. If you want to find yourself on a secluded beach with no one else in sight, you can find such a spot here even at the peak of the season. And if you want to relax on a developed, popular beach with restaurants and cafes just steps from the water, there are plenty of those places too.

While on the island, you can go on an eco-tour into the jungles and mountains. You can rent a motorbike or mountain bike and explore the island on your own, taking amazingly beautiful photos along the way. Be sure to visit a pearl farm and museum – the island's second name is 'Pearl Island'. There's also a black pepper farm open to tourists. One popular tourist activity on the island is fishing. You can try your hand not only at catching fish but also squid, crab, and other sea creatures. Visiting the Nuoc Mam fish sauce factory can be quite interesting, if you don't mind unpleasant smells. There are a few historical sites on the island, but they are few. Phu Quoc is also one of the best diving spots in all of Vietnam.

And in the evenings, after a day of activities, you can dine in numerous restaurants on fresh, affordable seafood and chat with other travelers.

Another plus: since 2005, Phu Quoc has had a special visa regime allowing citizens of any country to visit for up to 15 days without a visa, provided their passport is valid for at least 45 days beyond the travel date.

  • Nha Trang

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Nha Trang

Nha Trang – the capital city of Khanh Hoa province in central Vietnam. It's the most popular beach resort in Vietnam.

Tourists come here to combine excellent beach time with visiting a large number of restaurants, bars, cafes, nightclubs, discos, massage parlors, and beauty salons. There are several diving centers, hot springs, and mud baths. The nearby Hon Tre Island is connected to the resort by a long cable car, and the island itself features an amusement park for the whole family. Nha Trang is also not lacking in cultural and historical attractions, including the ancient Po Nagar Cham Towers, Long Son Pagoda, Monkey Island, and many temples. The range of hotels in Nha Trang covers all price points and comfort levels. Everything here is designed and operates to cater to tourists of any budget.

Undoubtedly, Nha Trang is one of Vietnam's most resort-oriented places, and local businesses dream of and are working to turn it into Vietnam's version of Pattaya in the coming years.

  • Phan Thiet and Mui Ne

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

Mui Ne beach often looks like this

Phan Thiet (also Phan Thiet) – a city in southern Vietnam on the coast of the South China Sea, about 200 km from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Mui Ne is an extended resort area on the coast near Phan Thiet. In fact, when people talk about tourist Phan Thiet, they usually mean the Mui Ne resort area, as few tourists stay in Phan Thiet itself.

Mui Ne is one of the most popular, if not the most popular resort in Vietnam among Russians. So popular that many local restaurants have menus in Russian, you can find signs in Russian on the streets, and tours are conducted in Russian. You can even watch Russian films in one of the local cafes.

The entire Mui Ne Beach tourist zone stretches along the coast, and hotels here are, with rare exceptions, located right on the beach. Literally stepping out of your hotel, you'll find yourself on a white sandy beach. The beach here is public, and although it's informally divided between hotels, no one will stop you from relaxing wherever you like. All necessary tourist infrastructure is well-established and actively developing here, although Phan Thiet isn't overflowing with nightlife venues yet (but they do exist). There are many restaurants, bars, massage parlors, and several natural, historical, and cultural attractions in the surrounding area. You can enjoy water sports and activities on the beach, and there's even a golf course on land for enthusiasts.

Also, Mui Ne is a mecca for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and, to some extent, surfing. It's considered to have the best conditions for these sports in all of Asia.

  • Da Nang

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Da Nang Beach

Da Nang (formerly the French Tourane) - the fourth largest and most significant city in Vietnam. It's located on the coast (South China Sea) in central Vietnam.

Da Nang is often ignored by tourists as it's a typical industrial city without any special attractions. However, Forbes magazine named Da Nang's beaches among the most attractive in the world. They are magnificent and attract a huge number of tourists from all over the world every year, but oddly enough, not from Russia or Europe, but from China and Vietnamese tourists. It's one of the most popular spots for domestic tourism.

The main interest for tourists lies in the attractions near Da Nang. These include the ancient town of Hoi An, the imperial capital Hue, the My Son ruins, Hai Van Pass, and Marble Mountain. Da Nang serves as a starting point or transit hub for these attractions due to its airport and railway station. Therefore, most questions about Da Nang are about how to get there and how to get from there to the desired destination. But over the last few years, the city has developed decent tourist infrastructure, built a promenade along its wonderful beaches, and formed a tourist district. So now it's also a pretty good beach resort, albeit with its own characteristics.

  • Hoi An

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Hoi An

Hoi An - a small town in central Vietnam on the coast of the South China Sea. Hoi An is one of the popular tourist destinations. The town is located 25 kilometers north of Da Nang, on the banks of the Thu Bon River a few kilometers from the coast.

Hoi An, also known by its ancient name Faifo, was an important and very busy trading port in the 16th-17th centuries. Later the center of trade moved to Da Nang, but the spirit of the old trading town is preserved in the heart of Hoi An - the Ancient Town. Today, Hoi An, more than any other place in Vietnam, retains the atmosphere of bygone centuries and is a favorite spot for tourists. In 1999, it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as an example of a Southeast Asian trading town from the 15th-19th centuries.

Hoi An is sometimes called an open-air museum town, as it has 844 officially recognized buildings of historical significance. The town is also famous for its traditional and souvenir shops, and a large number of tailor shops. You won't miss out on excellent beach time here either. Hoi An's beaches are a few kilometers from the town center, but it's easy to get there by bicycle, motorbike, taxi, or free shuttle. Or you could just stay at one of the beachfront hotels. The quality of the beaches here is top-notch. They are sandy, uncrowded, and very clean. Here, right on the beaches, you'll find authentic round Vietnamese fishing boats with gear.

The cuisine in Hoi An is a whole different story. In the many cafes and restaurants that light up their lanterns for visitors in the evening, you can try incredible delicacies. This is a town of artists and craftsmen, and the chefs here are artists too. And the best part is, everything you eat and drink will cost mere pennies. Only in Hoi An restaurants can you drink a mug of beer for 2,000 dong (about 6 USD) and feast to your heart's content for 40,000. But lovers of nightclubs and discos will be disappointed. You won't find anything like that in Hoi An.

  • Lang Co

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    View of Lang Co

The small village of Lang Co, as a vacation spot, is not for every tourist. It lies on the shore between Da Nang and Hue, and the atmosphere here is very secluded. Yes, it's considered a tourist resort, but the tourist infrastructure is very underdeveloped: apart from a few hotels, there's nothing specifically for tourists. You won't find any travel agencies, excursions, cafes, or restaurants, not even currency exchange. You can only eat and entertain yourself on hotel premises. Once you step outside, you enter the setting of an ordinary fishing village, where you can find civilization in the form of shops, local eateries, and a couple of ATMs only along the main highway.

However, credit where it's due, Lang Co has an excellent beach. By some estimates, it's even considered the most beautiful in Vietnam. It stretches continuously for 10 kilometers, all fine white and yellow sand, very pleasant to the touch. The beach can't be called perfectly clean; there's some debris washed ashore and village waste, but the beaches by the hotels are cleaned. The seabed slope is normal: not too deep (good for children) but not too shallow either, and you can swim even at low tide.

  • Vung Tau

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

The long coastline with a beach in Vung Tau

Vung Tau – a large city on the coast of southern Vietnam with a population of over 450,000, located 125 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. It's one of the popular tourist spots, a beach resort. But primarily for domestic tourists wanting to spend time away from the noisy economic capital, rather than for foreigners. People come here for beach time, shopping, and entertainment. But calling Vung Tau a true beach resort is a bit of a stretch: the beaches are located within the city limits, so they're not very clean. The sand is dirty due to debris washed ashore from the Mekong River, and the water isn't very clean because of industrial enterprises in the city. The waves are quite strong most of the year, which might only please kitesurfing enthusiasts.

There aren't too many attractions in Vung Tau. There's the standard set of temples and pagodas as in any Vietnamese city. Besides that, there are some noteworthy sights – a lighthouse and a giant statue of Jesus about 32 meters high on a mountaintop. Overall, the tourist infrastructure in the city is decent. For daily activities, you can stroll through the city park, visit the amusement park on the hill, go to the local market, shopping malls, or spend time on the beach or by the hotel pool. There's not much else to do in Vung Tau during the day. Evenings can be spent in a cafe or restaurant; there are also a few bars open late and nightclubs. However, visitors to night venues are mostly locals, and tourists might not feel particularly comfortable there.

  • Cat Ba Island

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    On Cat Ba

Cat Ba Island – the largest of 366 islands in the eponymous archipelago in northern Vietnam, 140 kilometers from Hanoi. Cat Ba is a sparsely populated island, and most of it is uninhabited territory – Cat Ba National Park. The island's terrain is predominantly hilly, covered in evergreen tropical forests.

Cat Ba is currently the only developed beach resort in northern Vietnam. Along with visiting Hanoi, Sapa, Bac Ha, Dien Bien Phu, and other sightseeing spots in the north, you can add a bit of beach vacation on Cat Ba to your trip without traveling further to the central or southern part of the country.

There aren't that many beaches on Cat Ba, but enough to feel comfortable even at the peak of the season, and in the low tourist season, the beaches are almost empty. There are four developed and equipped beaches, simply named: Cat Co1, Cat Co2, Cat Co3, and Catba Emerald Beach. All are sandy and located in cozy, wave- and wind-protected coves. There are also many secluded beaches around Cat Ba's perimeter, but they are less suitable for swimming. However, you can find plenty of hidden beaches on the nearby islands of the archipelago. You can reach them with tours (but then they won't be secluded), on a private boat, or even by kayak. The center of tourist life on the island is Cat Ba Town, where all tourist infrastructure is concentrated: hotels, shops, cafes, restaurants, travel agencies, banks, transport rentals. All four beaches are within walking distance of the center. After beach time and excursions, you can have fun at the Rose Club nightclub or one of the many bars with modern music, sing at a karaoke bar, dine at a floating restaurant, or get a massage or spa treatment. Overall, evening tourist life on Cat Ba is quite well developed; you won't be bored.

  • Hanoi

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi

Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam and the country's second most important industrial center (after Ho Chi Minh City), and simultaneously the cultural capital. It's a place where the old, leisurely spirit of exotic Asia mixes with modern business bustle. A crazy stream of countless motorbikes flows like a river between ancient monuments, temples, and memories of Vietnam's recent history, while cyclo drivers carry passengers past modern shopping mall buildings.

However, considering Hanoi as a place to spend your entire vacation probably isn't the best idea. There's no beach vacation here and minimal tourist entertainment (aside from attractions). The city is definitely worth a visit, but two to three days are enough to see the most popular Hanoi sights. Also, for many tourists, the city is a starting point for traveling in northern Vietnam, as nearby are Halong Bay, the mountain town of Sapa, and the beach resort of Cat Ba Island. You can also continue your journey through Asia from here to Laos and further to Thailand.

  • Ho Chi Minh City

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Ho Chi Minh City

Some say tourists who visit Vietnam are divided into those who love Hanoi and those who love Ho Chi Minh City. That's probably true, and you can only understand which category you belong to after you've been to both.

Ho Chi Minh City – the official name of the city since 1976. This name is used mainly in official documents, signs, addresses, and schedules. But for Vietnam's population, Ho Chi Minh City is still the good old Saigon, and practically no one uses the new name in conversation.

Saigon – Vietnam's largest city (over 7.5 million residents) and the country's economic capital (about 300,000 enterprises). For many tourists arriving here, it might seem like just a boring industrial city and a gateway into the country; few linger. But there are also those who purposefully stay in Saigon to immerse themselves in its hustle, wander through shopping malls and stroll the rows of Ben Thanh Market, visit numerous parks and squares, spend carefree evenings in cafes, restaurants, and bars in the tourist district. There are also many old architectural monuments, famous historical sites, and picturesque natural spots. Images of exoticism and everyday life are everywhere – street markets where people bargain and make deals; sidewalk cafes whose stereo speakers fill the surrounding streets with music; clean new pubs where tourists chat over a beer with peanuts and a huge bowl of Pho soup.

From Saigon, you can go to almost every corner of Vietnam and beyond. Numerous tours in the Saigon area, to the Mekong Delta, to Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand can be bought for just a few dozen dollars. In Saigon itself, you won't have any problems getting to attractions and leisure spots: a developed public transport network, an abundance of taxis, and motorbike taxis will allow you to get from the airport to the doorstep of your hotel literally for a few rubles right after arriving in the country.

  • Sapa

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

Ethnic residents in Ta Van village near Sapa

One of the places in Vietnam that attracts tourists who don't want to settle for lounging by the pool and market hopping is the town of Sapa in the north of the country, founded in 1910 by French colonists as a retreat from the hot tropical climate. Today Sapa is known and attracts tourists with its magnificent landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The town is surrounded by high mountain peaks and beautiful rice fields.

Sapa is a great place for mountain hikes and bicycle tours, and for getting to know the fading culture of the numerous ethnic groups living in the north. Tourists visit Sapa to see the famous "Love Market," go trekking to surrounding villages through rice fields, or climb Vietnam's highest peak – Fansipan Mountain. A special flavor is added by tours that include staying overnight in local villagers' homes.

The Sapa area has been the cradle for many ethnic groups, eight of which still live here. You can distinguish one ethnic group from another by the color of their traditional clothing, usually embroidered. The villages have an almost medieval appearance. Although some residents have mobile phones and internet access, they mostly live a harsh and poor life.

  • Halong Bay

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

On a tour in Halong Bay

Halong Bay, also called Ha Long Bay – a bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea, in northern Vietnam about 170 kilometers from Hanoi. The bay contains over 3,000 islands, rocks, cliffs, and caves. Its area is about 1,500 sq km. The bay's name translates from Vietnamese roughly as "Bay of the Descending Dragon."

In 1994, Halong Bay was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in 2011 it was named one of the "New7Wonders of Nature" and declared a new natural wonder, as one of Vietnam's most iconic landscapes.

Almost all islands in Halong Bay are rocky, with thousands of caves of various shapes and sizes in the cliffs, filled with stalactites and stalagmites, small waterfalls. The most popular caves are equipped as tourist attractions with colorful lighting, making them resemble underground palaces.

For tourists, the bay is mainly interesting not as a resort for long stays but as a short-term sightseeing destination. Most often, tourists visit the bay on a 1-2 day tour, and sometimes don't even stay overnight, limiting themselves to a day trip. However, you can certainly stay in a hotel on Cat Ba Island or on the coast for a few days.

  • Hue

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

Hue Imperial Citadel - heart of the ancient Vietnamese empire

Hue – a city in central Vietnam, the former imperial capital. Located roughly halfway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, 12 kilometers from the shore. It's an important cultural, political, economic, and educational center of the country, and Vietnam's most interesting historical site.

The city attracts tourists with its rich history, excellently preserved and very significant attractions. Hue played a very important role in the country's history. From 1802 to 1945, the city was the capital of the Vietnamese Nguyen dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of the state. Over these 143 years, thirteen emperors of the dynasty successively occupied the throne in Hue. The thirteenth and last was Emperor Bao Dai – the last emperor of Vietnam. In 1945, Ho Chi Minh came to power in the country, under whose pressure Bao Dai abdicated. The new government moved the capital to Hanoi. Since then, Hue ceased to be the capital but has perfectly preserved the spirit and monuments of the past.

There's no beach vacation in Hue (though if you wish, you can travel 12 km to the coast with its wonderful beaches), the stay here is only for sightseeing. Some tourists limit themselves to visiting the city on a tour, for example from Da Nang or Hoi An, but with such a visit, you won't feel the spirit and atmosphere of the city, only see the architecture and monuments. If you want to stay in the city longer, all conditions are created for that: many hotels, wonderful authentic cuisine, many traditional entertainments are offered. Plus, it's easy to get to Hue independently from any tourist city in the country.

  • Phan Rang

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Vacation in Phan Rang

Phan Rang – a resort town on the coast of the South China Sea in southern Vietnam between two popular and crowded sea resorts Nha Trang and Mui Ne, roughly equidistant from each (Phan Rang on map).

The Phan Rang resort is strikingly different from the more "promoted" Mui Ne and Nha Trang. There are far fewer foreign tourists here, meaning less noise and bustle. It's popular with local vacationers, but fortunately, they fill the resort only on weekends and holidays; the rest of the time it's calm and quiet, like a village. Walking or riding a motorbike around the surroundings, you can observe authentic, non-touristy Vietnam here. So to speak, see the country as it really is.

There are few attractions in Phan Rang, nightlife is almost absent. Local hotels have equipment rental for surfing and kitesurfing. But overall, conditions for active water sports aren't very favorable here: you can catch suitable wind and waves only in December and January. Snorkeling enthusiasts might only be interested in Ca Na beach, located 30 km south of the city.

Therefore, this resort is suitable, first and foremost, for lovers of calm, peaceful beach vacations, and also – for food tourism. In local restaurants, cafes, and eateries, you can try many exotic dishes (mainly seafood), and prices are lower than at more popular resorts.

  • Da Lat

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Xuan Huong Lake

Da Lat – a city in the south-central highlands of Vietnam, capital of Lam Dong province. Located on the Lang Biang plateau at an altitude of 1,475 meters above sea level, about 300 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. Da Lat attracts tourists who want new experiences and to see a different Vietnam. Tourists who are sensitive to atmosphere might feel like they've entered a different country, a different Vietnam. The streets are clean here, taxi drivers don't pester you on every corner offering rides, hawkers don't grab your sleeve offering to sell you sunglasses and lighters. Foreign tourists are treated with care, if not tenderness.

Da Lat is a mountain resort and you won't find any beaches here. There are almost no cultural or historical attractions either. Da Lat's attractions are, first and foremost, natural beauty and formations. Picturesque valleys, evergreen forests, numerous waterfalls, lakes, passes, and natural parks lie around. Here are the best routes for hiking and mountain biking. Thanks to the plateau's elevation of 1,500-2,000 meters above sea level, ideal conditions are maintained for growing fruits and vegetables, tea and coffee, flowers that cannot grow at sea level. Grown here, they are offered throughout Vietnam under the special label "made in Da Lat." It's the only place in Vietnam where wine is made. Da Lat is also the most popular honeymoon destination for newlyweds, and the city of Vietnamese artists and painters. It's also one of the centers of Vietnamese science.

Most often, tourists visit Da Lat on one- or two-day tours departing from Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet, Nha Trang. But this time is definitely not enough to get acquainted with the city and its surroundings. It's a very pleasant city and you'll surely want to stay longer. But nothing stops you from visiting this city independently, staying in a hotel here for several days. Tourist infrastructure is at a high level and no inconveniences will arise.

  • Con Dao Island

    - beach relaxation
    - sightseeing and excursions
    - entertainment and nightlife
    - shopping
    - affordability
    - transport accessibility

    Con Dao Island

Con Dao Island is located in the south of the country, about 100 kilometers off the coast in the South China Sea. The island is the largest of the eponymous archipelago of 16 islands with a total area of 76 sq km. The island is also sometimes called by its old name Con Son (renamed Con Dao in 1977). Previously, the island was a place where political prisoners were held.

Con Dao is one of Vietnam's popular island resorts. The island offers guests excellent beach vacations and opportunities for diving and snorkeling. Given the remoteness and inaccessibility of the island, vacation here is considered quite secluded, calm, and exotic. There aren't many tourists here, and you can still find wild, little-explored places. Currently, active construction of tourist infrastructure is underway on the island, so if you want to see the island before it's densely populated by tourists, you should hurry.

Most of the archipelago's territory has been part of a National Park since 1984, where you can see exotic animals, plants, and underwater life (diving on the island is considered the best in Vietnam).

There are also some historical attractions on the island: Phu Hai prison for political prisoners, where 20,000 prisoners died; Hang Duong Cemetery; Revolutionary Museum; and a lighthouse.

The island's tourist infrastructure is still quite underdeveloped, which is more of a plus for such a place than a minus. Besides hotels and restaurants, there's almost nothing here, although construction of new facilities is underway. The center of the island is the recently built Con Son Village with good roads, new buildings, but even there you can find only the essentials. You can buy things only at markets; there are no shopping malls here. Everything is very expensive, so it's better to buy everything you need for your vacation on the mainland. There are diving centers and travel agencies ready to take you to nearby islands or on a tour of the National Park. In the evenings, there's nothing to do on the island.

    Hai Phong

Hai Phong – a large city in northern Vietnam, 120 kilometers from Hanoi and very close to Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island. It's Vietnam's third most populous city with 2 million residents, after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. It's also a major economic center and the largest port in the north of the country.

Hai Phong – is of little interest to tourists; there's absolutely nothing to do here. It's simply a large trading and port city that can't boast of bright attractions, beaches, or even a modest tourist quarter. There's not even provincial charm, the atmosphere of which attracts tourists when visiting small towns and villages. Perhaps, if you're forced to stay in this place, you could pay attention to the old colonial architecture built here by the French in the 19th century, and the tradition of consuming Vietnamese coffee, which is loved here more than anywhere else. The reason for this love of coffee is unclear, but the fact that locals consume it in huge quantities in countless traditional coffee shops throughout the city is a fact.

But despite its low tourist appeal, Hai Phong is an important place for tourists because it's on the route to the only developed beach island-resort in northern Vietnam, Cat Ba, and also to Halong and Lan Ha bays. Here is Cat Bi International Airport, a railway station, several bus stations, and piers with ferries and boats. If on your way to these places you're forced to stop in Hai Phong, no difficulties will arise, as there's developed urban infrastructure, many hotels, and shopping malls. And to occupy your time, you can visit one of the few local attractions or just walk around the city.
