Hue is not just a dot on the map of Vietnam between Da Nang and Hanoi. It's a living history textbook, where pages from the past are palaces behind fortress walls, tombs in scenic valleys, and pagodas on the banks of the Perfume River. But Hue will surprise you not only with this. In its surroundings, there is a crazy number of places not written about in standard guidebooks: dozens of temples, forgotten tombs, exotic "thematic" artisan villages. It's the perfect place for those who love to discover something new — you can easily spend a week here, and each day will be full of discoveries.
And Hue is also an excellent base for excursions to the most diverse corners of Central Vietnam. From here, it's convenient to go on a one-day or two-day trip to the fantastic Phong Nha caves or to dive into military history in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). But first, let's figure out how the city itself is structured and where to start exploring it.
Hue — the Imperial Capital of Vietnam: Where to Start Your Introduction
Historically, Hue is the ancient capital of Vietnam, and this defines its appearance: the city is saturated with monuments from the Nguyen dynasty era. Unfortunately, many of them, like the Forbidden Purple City within the Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were severely damaged during the war with the US, but the scale is still impressive.
What's very convenient for tourists: almost all of Hue's city attractions are compactly located in the center and can be explored on foot or by taxi. But to visit the imperial tombs and some important temples scattered within a 7-20 km radius from the city, you will already need transport.
How to Visit Attractions: Independently or with a Tour?
In Hue, there are three main options:
- Independently on foot/by taxi: Ideal for seeing the Citadel, embankment, museums, and pagodas in the center. Gives complete freedom.
- Independently on rented transport (bike/car with driver): The best way to travel to the tombs and surroundings. Allows you to create your own route and visit non-standard places. Motorbike rental from 120,000 VND, but an "A" category license is required.
- With an organized tour: A convenient option if you don't want to figure out logistics, especially for trips to Phong Nha or DMZ.
Tours in Hue are sold literally on every corner: at street agencies (as in the photo above), hotels, hostels. Prices and quality can vary greatly, so as a convenient and modern alternative where you can read descriptions and reviews in advance and compare prices, use modern online aggregators:

Practical advice on tours: Popular are one-day group city and tomb tours by bus (from ~$10 excluding entrance tickets) and boat cruises on the Perfume River (daytime or evening with dinner and show). Important to know: daytime river cruises to the tombs are very slow and take a whole day, leaving little time for the city. If time is limited, choose a bus tour or rent transport.

Boat Cruise on the Perfume River in Hue (Huong river cruise)
Departure for an evening cruise on the Perfume River Cruises on the Huong River are the main tourist entertainment in Hue, which most tourists don't miss. There are daytime and evening cruises. Evening ones are more picturesque, but during daytime cruises you can combine a boat ride with visiting attractions: Thien Mu Pagoda and Minh Mang Tomb, near which there are also piers and boats dock there. During evening cruises, a traditional music show is also held. We won't say this is a must-do for tourists in Hue, there are peculiarities: tourists are mainly locals with a mentality unfamiliar to Western tourists, and the sailing route itself, especially for evening cruises, is very short. So we recommend it only if you haven't been on such cruises before, have free time, and don't mind spending the money.

But be sure to double-check the price when boarding the boat.

Tam Giang Lagoon (Tam Giang Lagoon)
Tam Giang Lagoon is one of the two largest freshwater lagoons in Vietnam. Its length is 23 kilometers, and it is separated from the salty waters of the South China Sea by a strip of land only 800 meters wide. Yet the water in the lagoon remains fresh, allowing for the cultivation of a huge number of freshwater marine inhabitants.
For tourists, this place is interesting for its beautiful views, especially at sunset when the wind subsides and the water surface becomes mirror-like. Also, life is bustling around the lake, many fishing boats constantly set sail on the lagoon, and some of them are ready to take tourists on board who want to fish. From Hue, day trips with fishing are organized to the lagoon.
