Description and whether it's worth visiting
Walking Street in Hue (Vo Thi Sau Street) is the lively and noisy heart of the city's nightlife, which can be an unexpected discovery for many tourists. If you expect from the former imperial capital only quiet pagodas and historical ruins, this district will surprise you. Here reigns the atmosphere of modern Vietnamese fun with bars, music, and a bustling crowd until late at night.
We happened to visit Hue more than 10 years ago, and we were amazed at how much this area has changed. After dark, part of Vo Thi Sau Street is closed to traffic and turns into a pedestrian zone, where tables from numerous bars and restaurants are placed right on the pavement. The sounds of modern club music mix with cheerful voices, creating a contrast with the calm daytime appearance of the city. This place is a vivid reminder of how multifaceted modern Vietnam has become, where ancient traditions coexist with dynamic youth culture.
As in many similar places in Asia, the atmosphere here is very relaxed and geared towards entertainment. In some establishments, girls in short skirts may dance on tables, enticing visitors. Karaoke clubs and nightclubs operate behind closed doors. It is worth understanding that this is not a place for a quiet romantic dinner or cultural immersion - it is a place where you can have a couple of beers, observe life, and feel the energy of a modern Vietnamese city.
Walking Street is definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to see another, non-historical side of Hue and understand how local youth and tourists have fun. However, if you are looking for an authentic Vietnamese atmosphere or are traveling with children, it is better to choose something else for the evening.
For a calmer and more traditional rest in the city, we recommend paying attention to other locations we have written about:
The establishments here are mainly geared towards simple and affordable entertainment. Drink prices are very democratic, making the street popular among both budget travelers and locals. Beer costs from 20,000 dong (0.76 USD) per mug. The bars and restaurants themselves, facing the street, usually do not charge an entry fee - it is enough to order a drink. The situation changes if you decide to enter one of the closed nightclubs with security at the entrance. Entry there is usually paid, often on a "combo" system: for a fixed amount (for example, 999,000 dong, which is approximately equal to 37.94 USD) you get a table and a set of drinks, for example, several bottles of beer, water, and snacks.
Walking here in the evening, you will see Vietnam with its entrepreneurial energy and ability to have fun. It is an excellent way to spend a couple of hours after a day full of sightseeing and to socialize with other travelers.
🕐 Opening Hours
Walking Street comes alive after dark. Individual establishments begin to put out tables and open around 18:00. The main activity and atmosphere occur from 20:00 to 23:00-00:00. Some clubs may operate until 2:00-3:00 AM.
💵 Entrance Fee and Prices
Walking along the street itself and sitting in most open-air bars is free - you only pay for your order. Drink prices are very affordable, especially compared to European or Russian club districts.
- Beer (Bia Hoi, local draft): from 20,000 dong (0.76 USD) per mug.
- Cocktails: from 50,000 - 80,000 dong (1.9 - 3.04 USD).
- Entry to nightclubs: Often based on a "combo" system. For example, for 999,000 dong (37.94 USD) a table may be offered with a set of 6 bottles of beer, a plate of fruit, and a bottle of water.
We recommend having cash Vietnamese dong with you, although some establishments may accept cards.
🚶 How to Get There
Walking Street (officially — Vo Thi Sau Street) is located in the very center of the tourist district of Hue, south of the Huong River and not far from the well-known tourist street Pham Ngu Lao (view on map). This is within walking distance from most hotels and hostels in the city center.
The easiest way to get here is on foot from your hotel in the center. If you live further away, you can take a taxi (Grab) or motorbike taxi (xe om) — just say "Walking Street" or "Vo Thi Sau". In the evening the street is closed to vehicular traffic, so a taxi will drop you off at one of the nearby intersections.
