Description and Is it Worth Visiting

View of the Japanese Bridge in the evening

The Covered Japanese Bridge (Japanese Bridge) in Hoi An is not just a crossing over the Thu Bon River, but one of the main and most recognizable symbols of the city, as well as a rare surviving architectural monument from the late 16th century. Visiting it is a must-do for any traveler in Hoi An. It's not only a beautiful, photogenic attraction but also a unique structure combining the functions of a bridge, a temple, and a historical monument.

The bridge was built in 1593 by the Japanese trading community for a practical purpose - to connect their quarter with the Chinese districts on the opposite bank. But its design went beyond the utilitarian. It is a covered bridge-pagoda with a characteristic arched curve, which has remained virtually unchanged for centuries, surviving numerous restorations. Of particular interest is the small shrine Chua Cau, built into the northern side of the bridge. It is dedicated to a Taoist deity protecting against evil spirits, and according to local beliefs, it is this chapel with statues of a dog's head on one side and a monkey on the other that protects the city from earthquakes and monsters. Entry to it is possible directly from the bridge, but access is not free; you need to purchase a combined ticket for visiting Hoi An's museums.

Interestingly, in 1719, the bridge received a new poetic name - Lai Vien Kieu, which means "Bridge for travelers from afar." However, it seems this name never caught on among the townspeople or in history. For everyone, it is still the Japanese Bridge, as indicated by the inscription above the temple entrance. We believe this speaks to the deep connection of the object with the specific historical period and community that built it.

Today, this place is a tourist hub. People come here not just to cross the river, but to take memorable photos, observe life by the water, and feel the atmosphere of the old town. Due to its high popularity, the bridge is almost always surrounded by tourists; even passing over it is difficult due to human traffic jams. Therefore, for a calm inspection and better photos without crowds, it's best to come in the morning or during the day. The bridge looks especially impressive from the side, for example, from the embankment or from a boat on the river, when you can appreciate the harmony of its construction and its reflection in the water. While crossing it, pay attention to the ancient wooden beams and decorative details - they hold the spirit of past eras. Although the bridge may seem toy-like, it is a full-fledged and functioning monument, crossed daily by thousands of people, which only adds to its authenticity.
