Overview of Ways to Get to Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is located far south in Vietnam, it's the southernmost major resort in Vietnam (Phu Quoc on the map of Vietnam). The main 'transit hub' for getting to Phu Quoc is Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). From Ho Chi Minh City, dozens of daily flights depart to Phu Quoc, and you can also get there overland with a ferry transfer. But we still advise always getting to Phu Quoc by plane, and leaving the land and sea route only as a last resort. Let's tell you in detail about all the ways in our guide, but first, here are brief instructions:
- From cities in Russia and other countries. Usually, the cheapest way is to fly to Ho Chi Minh City separately, and then transfer to a domestic flight to Phu Quoc. You can also fly to Hanoi or Nha Trang, but most often this is more expensive than via Ho Chi Minh City. There are also ready-made international flights to Phu Quoc without a layover in Vietnam, but these are more expensive.
- From Ho Chi Minh City. Best to fly, there are many flights and they are inexpensive if bought in advance, travel time is 1 hour. You can go cheaper by bus to Rach Gia or Ha Tien, and then transfer to a ferry to Phu Quoc, but you won't save much money, and it will take a whole day and involve many hassles.
- From Mui Ne. By bus or transfer (buy at the hotel or a street travel agency) to Ho Chi Minh City airport, and from there by plane. Again, you could go overland to Rach Gia or Ha Tien, but that involves a transfer through Ho Chi Minh City and will take two days.

- From Nha Trang. There are no direct flights, but you can buy ready-made flights with a layover in Ho Chi Minh City. Or take a bus, preferably an overnight one, to central Ho Chi Minh City, and from the center by taxi or city buses #152 or #109 to the airport. - From Da Nang and Hanoi. Definitely fly, there are direct flights.
- From other cities in Vietnam. Definitely fly, there are ready-made flights with a layover in Ho Chi Minh City.
- From Cambodia. You can get overland or by boat along the Mekong to the border town of Chau Doc, from there a short ride to Ha Tien and transfer to a ferry. There are also ready-made tourist routes with transfers from hotel doors on Phu Quoc from almost all major cities and resorts in Cambodia.

Ready-Made Tours to Phu Quoc
If you're not ready for independent travel and the hassles of getting around on your own, then maybe it's easier for you to buy a ready-made package tour to Phu Quoc. Tour operators offer such tours not only from Moscow but also from the regions, and their cost includes a transfer from the airport to the resort. That is, they will meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel, and then at the end of the holiday, take you back to the airport. Today, it's most convenient and cheapest to buy tours online, which you can do on one of these trusted sites:

✈ To Phu Quoc by Plane
Phu Quoc has the Phu Quoc International Airport (Phu Quoc airport on the map). It receives domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, and Hanoi, and international flights mainly from neighboring Southeast Asian countries. The most frequent flights are from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
We have a detailed guide about Phu Quoc Airport. Everything about the airport layout, where to exchange money and buy a SIM card, how to get there, and more.
From Russia and other CIS countries, you can't get to Phu Quoc directly; there are no direct flights and none are expected. But you can fly with layovers through China, Thailand, UAE, Qatar, and so on. There are ready-made flights with one or two layovers each way, and if possible, it's best to buy exactly such ready-made flights. The thing is, a ready-made flight from one airline or partner airlines on a single ticket 'insures' you against possible flight delays. That is, if on a single ticket you miss the next flight due to a delay of the previous one, the airline will deliver you for free on the next flight. But if you buy each ticket separately, then all connections and possible delays will be your responsibility.
However, ready-made tickets to Phu Quoc are very expensive and tiring, the cheapest of them have two layovers each way. So it makes sense to consider the option of self-connecting in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. That is, you buy separate round-trip tickets to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, and separate tickets to Phu Quoc. Moreover, it comes out even cheaper this way, but for such a route, it's better to plan an overnight stay in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Firstly, just to rest a bit from this heavy route, and secondly, to have sufficient time for connections.
You can find air tickets to Phu Quoc, including with layovers, using the search form from Aviasales or on Trip.com:

How to Get from Phu Quoc Airport to Hotels and Resorts
Previously, you could only get from Phu Quoc Airport to hotels by taxi, and it was very expensive. But now the situation has changed for the better. Taxis have become cheaper, buses have appeared, and you can leave the airport in a rented car or motorbike. So now there are options to get to your resort for both budget travelers and well-off tourists. More about each way:
-
🚖 By Taxi
- 💵 Cost: from 100,000 dong / from 3.8 USD
- ⏲ Travel time: 10-30 minutes
Taxi at Phu Quoc Airport You can order a taxi at the counter upon arrival or from touts who meet passengers in the arrivals hall. A ride to the hotel with them will cost from $20 to $50, which is very expensive, you need to bargain.
If you need to save money and don't want to bargain, it's more convenient and advantageous to order a taxi through the Grab app. Grab is similar to Uber or YandexGo. You'll see the trip price immediately in the app, you can pay in cash at the end of the trip or link a card, but no Russian cards work. It's better to install the Grab app in advance and register it with a phone number or FB/Google account. You'll need to confirm the phone number via SMS, and if SMS doesn't come to your Russian number, then choose Kazakhstan from the country list (code +7 same as Russia). For ordering, you can use local mobile internet (how and where to buy a local SIM card read here...) or airport WiFi.
For reference, here are real taxi prices when ordered via Grab from the airport:
- Long Beach near Duong Dong – from 120,000 dong / from 4.56 USD.
- Duong Dong Center – from 130,000 dong / from 4.94 USD.
- SonaSea area – from 100,000 dong / from 3.8 USD.
- New SunsetTown – from 240,000 dong / from 9.12 USD.
- Khem Beach – from 200,000 dong / from 7.6 USD.
- Bai Dai Beach and Grand World area – from 380,000 dong / from 14.43 USD.
Motorbike taxi can be ordered for half the price.
If you can't manage the app, you can even order a Grab taxi through the drivers themselves. When you pass the first 'wave' of touts and go outside, there will also be drivers there who show their smartphones with the Grab app and offer to enter your hotel right there and order a trip at the app's price. However, they will offer not the cheapest economy tariff, but a more expensive one, but even with that, the trip will be cheaper.
And finally, if you want a higher level of comfort and airport meet & greet, you can pre-book a taxi transfer, and they will meet you with a sign in the arrivals area and take you to the hotel door. You can order a transfer on kiwitaxi or intui.travel, or through this form from Kiwitaxi:
-
🚌 By Bus
- 💵 Cost: 20,000 - 50,000 dong / 0.76-1.9 USD.
- ⏲ Travel time: 30-60 minutes (including waiting time)
Bus #17 at Phu Quoc Airport Two VinBus routes operate from the airport – #17 and #19. You can get to most resorts and beaches on the west coast, which is the most developed resort part of Phu Quoc. You can find the buses in the airport parking lot to the right of the terminal exit, 📹 Watch our video on where to find the bus at Phu Quoc Airport. The buses are great: comfortable, air-conditioned, almost always empty, and suitable for travel even with large luggage. They run on schedule, even at night.
You can find all route information yourself on the website https://vinbus.vn/ (switch to the Phu Quoc tab there). But it's even better to download the Vinbus app and figure everything out there, plus it might be useful during your holiday.
Here is information about the two airport routes:
- Bus #17. Goes from the airport along Long Beach to Duong Dong and further along the entire coast up to the GrandWorld complex. Here is the route on the map, schedule is there too. Basically, this is the route for you if you choose a hotel in the most developed and democratic tourist area on Phu Quoc.
- Bus #19. Also goes through the airport (in transit) from the new tourist areas along Long Beach south of the airport, and then, like #17, through Duong Dong to the GrandWorld complex. Here is the route on the map, schedule is there too.
- Bus #20. You can take it from the ferry pier to Duong Dong center and then to the GrandWorld complex. It doesn't go through the tourist area and Long Beach, but in Duong Dong you can transfer to a taxi or to #17 or #19. Here is the route on the map, schedule is there too.
-
🚗 By Rented Transport
- 💵 Cost: motorbike from 80,000 dong/day (from 3.04 USD),
- ⏲ Travel time: 10-30 minutes
At the airport, you can rent a car or motorcycle and go to the hotel on your own, and return here at the end of your holiday.
There are no official motorcycle (motorbike, scooter) rentals here, but private rental agents meet you at the terminal exit and offer to rent a motorbike from them right there. At least they offered us, but it's not guaranteed they are always here. So for reliability, you can find a rental online in advance on Google Maps searching for Motorbike for Rent, contact the owner via WhatsApp and arrange delivery to the airport, usually it's free. You can also find contacts of local rentals through search engines or book online on 🏍 BikesBooking.com. Finally, there is a rental within walking distance from the airport: exit the terminal, go straight through the parking lot to the roundabout a little less than a kilometer, there is a rental there.
Real rental prices for one day start from 120,000 dong, and for several days you can negotiate for 100,000 or even 80,000 for an old semi-automatic scooter. For more details about renting a motorbike on Phu Quoc read our detailed article about Phu Quoc transport, and there is also a video about renting there.
Rented car in Vietnam You can also rent a car at the airport or find and book a car online, and upon arrival, just pick it up and drive off. Unfortunately, international rental chains and aggregators were not working here at the time of our last trip, but this might change in the future, you can check on aggregator websites:
By Bus+Ferry
Phu Quoc is connected by ferry service to the mainland, and this is also a fairly popular way to get here. Of course, for this, you first need to get to the ferry piers by bus, and here lies the downside of this method. In our opinion, it's worth getting to Phu Quoc this way only if you have a lot of time on your trip, and you need not just to get here, but also want to see something along the way.
For example, if you want to get to Phu Quoc from Cambodia, you can take a bus or boat to the border town of Chau Doc, spend the night or a few days there, and then take a bus + ferry to Phu Quoc. Or if on the way from Ho Chi Minh City you want to visit the famous floating market in Can Tho and generally get acquainted with life in the Mekong Delta.
But if you just need to get to Phu Quoc, it's best to simply fly from Ho Chi Minh City or other cities, as the overland route will take a lot of time and won't cost much less than a flight, especially if you buy plane tickets in advance. Another problem is that ferries only run in the first half of the day, and accordingly, to catch them, you'll have to leave Ho Chi Minh City or Chau Doc very early or spend the night in a city on the coast.
Ferries on Phu Quoc arrive/depart from two main places:
-
Bai Vong Port (Bai Vong on the map). This is the main port, where most passenger ferries arrive. From here, you can get to your resort on bus #20. It goes from the ferry pier to Duong Dong center and then to the GrandWorld complex. It doesn't go through the tourist area and Long Beach, but in Duong Dong you can transfer to a taxi or to #17 or #19. Here is the route on the map, schedule is there too.
A taxi ride from here will cost from 150,000 dong (5.7 USD). It's better to call via the Grab app, it's cheaper. If there's no mobile internet, you can find taxi drivers right here in the parking lot, but they ask for a bit more than via Grab or by meter, so ask them for a ride by meter.
And finally, right here, there are motorbike rentals for 150,000 dong, you can rent and go to the hotel. However, the price is a bit inflated, you need to bargain at least to 120,000 dong.
-
Thanh Thoi Port. Located near Bai Vong, just on the other side within walking distance.
-
Ben Pha Port (Ben Pha on the map). Some passenger services and the cargo ferry from Ha Tien arrive here, which can transport a car or motorbike.
And now more about the routes:
-
Via Rach Gia Port
The shortest route from Ho Chi Minh City is via Rach Gia city, from where regular ferries go to the main Bai Vong port.
Ferries depart several times a day in the first half of the day from about 07:00 to 15:00 according to the schedule, and back as well. Travel time is 2.5 hours, cost from 315,000 dong (11.96 USD). Check the schedule on the carrier's website - https://phuquocexpressboat.com/en/ and on 12go.asia.
In turn, there are buses to Rach Gia from Ho Chi Minh City, and from other cities, you'll also have to travel with a transfer via Ho Chi Minh City. There are quite a lot of buses on this route, cost from 230,000 dong (0.87 USD), travel time 6-7 hours. They depart from different bus stations in Ho Chi Minh City and from the tourist area, schedule and ticket booking are available on 12go.asia. Buses from the large carrier Futa Bus Lines also run, we recommend using them. Tickets and schedule can be viewed on their website https://futabus.vn/.
-
Via Ha Tien Port
There's no point in getting directly from Ho Chi Minh City via Ha Tien port. It's suitable only if you want to visit the border town of Chau Doc or are coming from Cambodia.
Ferries depart several times a day at different times, including night ones. Travel time from 1.5 hours, cost from 216,000 dong (8.2 USD). Check the schedule on the carrier's website - https://phuquocexpressboat.com/en/ and on 12go.asia.
In turn, there are direct buses to Ha Tien from Ho Chi Minh City, and from other cities and from Cambodia, you can get there with a transfer via Chau Doc. There are quite a lot of buses on this route, and conveniently, there are night ones. Cost from Ho Chi Minh City from 250,000 dong (9.49 USD), travel time 8-9 hours.
To Phu Quoc by Ferry from Cambodia
By ferry from Cambodia, you can get to/from Kampot, Kep, Phnom Penh, Koh Rong, Sihanoukville, and even Siem Reap. Of course, these are mainly combined ferry+bus routes.
