General Information about Phu Quoc Airport and How to Get Here
Phu Quoc Airport (IATA code – PQC) is the main and only passenger airport on Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. It has international status, meaning you can fly here not only from cities in Vietnam but also from other countries. The airport has an official website, but it's not very informative and opens poorly from Russia.
Attention! When searching for plane tickets to Phu Quoc Island, pay attention to the airport's IATA code – you need exactly PQC. The thing is, there is also an airport with a similar name Fukuoka in Japan.
From Russia and other CIS countries, there is no direct way to get to Phu Quoc; there are no and aren't expected to be any direct regular flights. But you can fly with connections via China, Thailand, UAE, Qatar, etc. There are ready-made flights with one or two connections each way, and if possible, it's best to buy exactly such ready-made flights. The fact is that a ready-made flight from one airline or partner companies on a single ticket "insures" you against possible flight delays. That is, if on a single ticket you miss the next flight due to a delay of the previous one, the airline will deliver you for free on the next flight. But if you buy each ticket separately, then all connections and possible delays will be solely your responsibility.
However, ready-made tickets to Phu Quoc are very expensive and exhausting; the cheapest of them have two connections each way. Therefore, it makes sense to consider the option of a self-connection in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. I.e., you buy separate round-trip tickets to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, and separate tickets to Phu Quoc. Moreover, this often turns out even cheaper, but for such a route it's better to plan an overnight stay in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Firstly, simply to get a bit of rest on this heavy route, and secondly, to have enough time buffer for connections.
You can find plane tickets to Phu Quoc, including with connections, via the search form from Aviasales or on Trip.com:

Getting Your Bearings at Phu Quoc Airport, Infrastructure and Amenities
Phu Quoc Airport is new and modern; we even liked it more in terms of convenience than the more important and larger Ho Chi Minh City airport. But Phu Quoc Airport is of course smaller.
It consists of one terminal building. The arrivals area is traditionally located on the first floor, i.e., you'll get there after exiting the plane. To get to the departures area and check-in counters, you need to go up to the second floor.
The airport has currency exchanges (in the departures area and in the arrivals area for international flights), taxi booking, car rental, cafes, a duty-free shop (in the international zone), souvenir shops. Part of the infrastructure is located outside on the first floor.
Currency Exchange and ATMs at Phu Quoc Airport
There is currency exchange at Phu Quoc Airport. We didn't see it in the arrivals area for domestic flights, but it is in the arrivals area for international flights and in the departures area on the second floor, where the check-in counters are. So if you arrive on a domestic flight and urgently need to exchange currency for local dong, go up to the second floor and exchange there.
Lifehack! If you need money at Phu Quoc Airport upon arrival only to get to your vacation spot, you can do without this. You can use a simple old useful tip that travelers have used for a long time: order a taxi to your vacation spot via Grab, at a booking desk, or from drivers in the parking lot, and ask them to stop at an exchange office with a good rate along the way, and then pay the driver at the end of the trip. Read about ordering taxis below.
You can exchange dollars and euros at Phu Quoc Airport at an acceptable rate. They also accept yuan, but the rate here, and in Vietnam in general for yuan, is less favorable than for dollars or euros. Rubles are not exchanged at the airport, but they are accepted in individual exchange offices at resorts, but the rate there is extremely low, so we don't advise bringing rubles.
Regarding the currency exchange rate at the airport compared to the resort and other places and whether it's worth exchanging here, we can say that the rate here is quite good and you can exchange money, at least for the first part of your vacation. In practice, the situation is that depending on which area of Phu Quoc you'll be vacationing in, it may turn out that the rate at the airport could be even more favorable, or it could be the opposite.
Here's information in numbers about the rate at one point in time for a full picture and understanding of the situation:
- Rate at Phu Quoc Airport – 25,090 dong per dollar.
- Exchange office in the Long Beach tourist area near Duong Dong – 25,300 dong per dollar.
- Exchange office at Vietin Bank in the Long Beach tourist area near Duong Dong – 24,800 dong per dollar.
- Exchange office in the tourist area at the Sonasea market/mall – 24,500 dong per dollar.
- Rate at Ho Chi Minh City Airport at exchange offices – 25,200 dong per dollar.
- Rate at Ho Chi Minh City Airport with street changers outside the international terminal – 25,300 dong per dollar.
- Rate at a jewelry store in the tourist area of Ho Chi Minh City – 25,500 dong per dollar.
From these numbers, we can draw this conclusion: if you've arrived on Phu Quoc for a short time and need a minimum of cash, for example within $100, you can exchange at the airport; you'll hardly notice the difference then.
If you have planned large expenses, for example from $500, and you're willing to spend time looking for a more favorable rate already at the resorts, then you can either not exchange at the airport or exchange the minimum.
And finally, if you're flying with a connection via Ho Chi Minh City, you can exchange at Ho Chi Minh City Airport or even better, go to the center to the tourist area and exchange there. You can get to Ho Chi Minh City's tourist area and back in 3-4 hours on a city bus for only 5,000 dong. We explain how to do this in the guide for Ho Chi Minh City Airport here.
There are also ATMs at the airport. You can withdraw money with a UnionPay card, but now only cards from one Russian bank, Rosselkhozbank, work; all others are under sanctions. Withdrawing money with a card, especially with a ruble account, is much less profitable than exchanging cash dollars or euros.
Mir cards, although they work in Vietnam, will be useless here because there isn't a single ATM at the airport or anywhere on Phu Quoc that accepts these cards.
For more details about bank cards in Vietnam and which ones work here, we advise reading in our regularly updated article here.
Where to Buy a SIM Card at Phu Quoc Airport
There are counters selling SIM cards in the arrivals area, and even private sellers hawking offer to buy SIM cards from them in person. The counters are located in the baggage claim area and further near the exit.
However, you need to understand an important thing: SIM cards sold here are tourist ones, i.e., registered to another person with a prepaid plan and with a markup. The minimum price is from 180,000 dong with a small internet package for 7 days. If you need more internet and a longer validity period, there are such options, but prices are higher.
If you need communication for a long trip, for example a month, then it's better to buy a SIM card at official mobile carrier stores and register it in your name with your passport at the resorts. How to buy a SIM card in Vietnam, what operators and plans are available, we've told it all here.
Internet WiFi at Phu Quoc Airport
Free WiFi is available at Phu Quoc Airport. No authorization or SMS input is required to connect: simply connect to the WiFi network without a password and on the authorization page click the button to get access. Internet is given for unlimited time, only sometimes you need to reconnect to the network again.
How to Get from Phu Quoc Airport to Hotels and Resorts
Phu Quoc Airport is conveniently located in the center of the island (Phu Quoc Airport on the map). Previously, you could only get to hotels from Phu Quoc Airport by taxi, and it was very expensive. But now the situation has changed a lot. Taxis have become cheaper, buses have appeared, and you can leave the airport by rented car or motorbike. So now there are options to get to your vacation spot for both budget travelers and affluent tourists. More about each method:
-
🚖 By Taxi
- 💵 Cost: from 100,000 VND / from 3.8 USD
- ⏲ Travel Time: 10-30 minutes
Taxi at Phu Quoc Airport You can order a taxi at the counter upon arrival or from the touts who meet passengers in the arrivals hall. A trip to the hotel with them will cost from $20 to $50, which is very expensive; you need to bargain.
If you need to save money and don't want to bargain, it's more convenient and profitable to order a taxi via the Grab app. Grab is an analog of Uber or YandexGo. You'll see the price for the trip immediately in the app; you can pay in cash at the end of the trip or link a card, but no Russian cards work. It's better to install the Grab app in advance and register it with a phone number or FB or Google account. You'll need to confirm the phone number via SMS, and if SMS doesn't come to your Russian number, then select Kazakhstan from the country list (code +7 same as Russia). For ordering, you can use local mobile internet (how and where to buy a local SIM card read here...) or airport WiFi.
For reference, here are actual taxi prices when ordering via Grab from the airport:
- Long Beach near Duong Dong – from 120,000 VND / from 4.56 USD.
- Duong Dong center – from 130,000 VND / from 4.94 USD.
- Sonasea area – from 100,000 VND / from 3.8 USD.
- New SunsetTown city – from 240,000 VND / from 9.13 USD.
- Khem Beach – from 200,000 VND / from 7.6 USD.
- Bai Dai Beach and Grand World area – from 380,000 VND / from 14.45 USD.
You can order a motorbike taxi for half the price.
If you can't manage the app, you can order a taxi via Grab even from the taxi drivers themselves. When you pass the first "wave" of touts and go outside, there will also be drivers there who show their smartphones with the Grab app and offer to input your hotel right there and order a trip at the app's price. True, they'll offer not the cheapest economy fare, but a more expensive one, but even on it the trip will be cheaper.
And finally, if you want a higher level of comfort and airport pickup, you can order a taxi-transfer in advance, and they'll meet you with a sign in the arrivals area and deliver you to the hotel door. You can order a transfer on the websites kiwitaxi or intui.travel, or via this form from Kiwitaxi:
-
🚌 By Bus
- 💵 Cost: 20,000 - 50,000 VND / 0.76-1.9 USD
- ⏲ Travel Time: 30-60 minutes (including waiting time)
Bus #17 at Phu Quoc airport Two VinBus routes operate from the airport - #17 and #19. On them you can get to most resorts and beaches on the west coast, which is exactly the most developed resort part of Phu Quoc. You can find the buses in the airport parking lot to the right of the terminal exit, 📹 Watch our video on where to find the bus at Phu Quoc airport. The buses are great: comfortable, air-conditioned, they almost always run empty and are suitable for trips even with large luggage. They run on schedule, and even at night.
🎬 Our Video on Where to Find the Bus at Phu Quoc Airport You can find all the information about the route yourself on the website https://vinbus.vn/ (switch to the Phu Quoc tab there). But even better, download the Vinbus app and figure it all out there; plus it might be useful to you during your vacation.
Here is information about the two airport routes:
- Bus #17. Goes from the airport along Long Beach to Duong Dong and further along the entire coast up to the GrandWorld complex. Here's the route on the map, schedule there too. Basically, this is the route that will suit you if you choose a hotel in the most developed and democratic tourist area on Phu Quoc.
- Bus #19. Also goes through the airport (in transit) from the new tourist areas along Long Beach south of the airport, and then again like #17 through Duong Dong to the GrandWorld complex. Here's the route on the map, schedule there too.
-
🚗 By Rented Transport
- 💵 Cost: motorbike from 80,000 VND/day (from 3.04 USD),
- ⏲ Travel Time: 10-30 minutes
At the airport you can rent a car or motorcycle and leave under your own power to the hotel, and return here at the end of your vacation.
There are no official motorcycle (motorbike, scooter) rentals here, but private renters meet you upon exiting the terminal and offer to take a motorbike from them right here. At least they offered us, but that's no guarantee they're always here. So for reliability, you can find a rental online in advance on Google Maps by searching Motorbike for Rent, contact the owner via WhatsApp and arrange delivery to the airport; it's usually free. You can also find contacts of local rentals via search engines or book online on 🏍 BikesBooking.com. Finally, there is a rental within walking distance of the airport: exit the terminal, go straight through the parking lot to the roundabout a bit less than a kilometer away; there's a rental there.
The actual price for a one-day rental starts from 120,000 VND, and for several days you can negotiate for 100,000 and even 80,000 for an old semi-automatic scooter. Read more about renting a motorbike on Phu Quoc in our detailed article about Phu Quoc transport, and there's also a video about rental there.
Rented car in Vietnam You can also rent a car at the airport or find and book a car online, and upon arrival just pick it up and drive off. Unfortunately, international chain rentals and aggregators at the time of our last trip weren't working here, but maybe this will change in the future; you can check this on aggregator sites:
