Surfing
Unfortunately for fans of this sport, but fortunately for beach lovers, surfing and Koh Samui are almost incompatible things. There are almost never big waves here, and this is what the island attracts beachgoers who do not like big ocean waves. There are simply no ocean waves here, since Koh Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is well protected from them and winds from all sides. Some waves can be "Caught" in the lowest season – October-December, but this is at most a wave for beginners. Accordingly, there is no surf party here, the rental of boards is found in very small numbers and only on the most popular beaches. The closest place to Koh Samui to go surfing is Phuket Island.
If you are on Koh Samui and certainly want to try your luck on the local waves, then you should do it on the beaches Chaweng and Lamai.
Windsurfing
With this sport on Koh Samui, the situation is somewhat better than with surfing. Windsurfing only needs wind, and it is here in principle. Safe shores, the absence of pitfalls, predictable and warm weather all year round make the island one of the best in Thailand for everyone – both beginners and experienced athletes.
On some beaches of Koh Samui, the wind blows all year round, these are Bophut and Maenam. Beaches on the east coast can also please windsurfing enthusiasts, but only seasonally. You can catch the wind on Lamai and Chaweng from November to April, but the rest of the time there is nothing to do here.
The necessary infrastructure for windsurfing on Koh Samui is available. In addition to rental, there are several schools for beginners. The cost of an individual lesson with an instructor will cost about 1,500 baht for a two-hour course (this is about $ 50).
Kitesurfing
Kitesurfing (Kitesurfing) or Kiteboarding on Koh Samui is one of the fastest growing water sports. The conditions here are simply excellent: there is wind, the waters are safe, there are few pitfalls, the water and air are warm all year round. As for windsurfing, the best places all year round are the beaches of Bophut and Mae Nam, and on Lamai and Chaweng, the wind season lasts mainly from November to April.
Equipment rental can be found without problems, especially on the popular Bo Phut, Chaweng and Lamai. There are also many schools and private instructors, but that's bad, and a lot of tourists. The natural conditions on the beach are excellent for Us, there are few people, and one of the famous kitesurfing schools is based right here.
- Kitesurfing equipment and equipment rental – 1000 baht/hour.
- Training – from 10,000 baht for a two-day course (includes rental of equipment and equipment).
