Waves in Phuket
In April, monsoons begin to blow on Phuket from the west, forming constant waves. The maximum of the waves falls on June-August. At this time, swimming on some beaches becomes dangerous or impossible. In addition, the constantly blowing wind and waves wash up and throw garbage and dirt ashore, making the image of beaches far from the ideal of "Bounty".
Considering that most of Phuket's beaches are located on the west coast of the island, tourists who prefer a "recumbent-floating" beach holiday from April to August disappear from the shores, and surfers who prefer active recreation take their place. Only on some beaches during this period it is safe to wallow in the water, mostly these are beaches hidden in coves, especially the beach at Cape Panva. But the wind does not interfere with the tan in any way, so if bathing is not your "hobby", then this time is quite suitable for you. In addition, you can safely swim in the hotel's pool.
Since October, the waves have been on the decline, and in November the influx of tourists and the high season begins, which lasts until March.

The tides on the beaches of Phuket
Along with the waves, for recreation, the influence of tides on the beach should be taken into account. After all, it is obvious that it is not very pleasant to observe the sea that ran away at low tide a hundred meters from its former location, leaving behind mountains of garbage and algae on the former bottom, exposing ugly gray rocks and stones. Basically, this problem concerns beaches with a shallow bottom that smoothly goes under the water. Where the depth is large and starts immediately, the bottom goes more sharply under the water, there are no such problems. Fortunately, there are very few such beaches in Phuket. It can be said that the influence of low tide on the beaches of Phuket is almost imperceptible.
It is necessary to debunk the myth that tides occur seasonally. Nothing like that. The tides are formed by the moon's rotation around the earth, and have nothing to do with the seasons. So if someone in a travel agency, for example, assures you that from February to March in Phuket, the tides are usually not very noticeable, know that this is complete nonsense. You need to understand that ebbs and flows occur every day, regardless of the month and time of year, they just happen at different times of the day. And it is ideal for your beach holiday if the low tide during your stay falls at night and the tide during the day. Therefore, it is never possible to say unequivocally, for example, that there are tides in a particular resort in the morning and ebbs in the evenings. To determine the level of tides on Koh Samui, you need to use special calculated forecast charts.
List of Phuket beaches and the effect of low tide
As already mentioned, different beaches have different bottom profiles, and, accordingly, they are affected by different tides. To understand the choice of beach, you can read the detailed description of the beaches of Phuket, in which we tried to give as clear a description as possible in terms of the bottom. Or here is a short list of beaches with an indication of the influence of tides:
- Patong Beach (Patong Beach, Thai. Haad Patong)
The effect of low tide on the entire length of the beach Patong is different, but in general the situation is always favorable. The tides are least visible in the northern part of the beach.
- Kalim Beach
Low tides do not greatly interfere with swimming on Kalima, however, they expose sharp rocks when entering the water. The advantage of low tide on Kalimea is that during low tide a fairly diverse underwater life is exposed, and it can be studied without diving.
- Karon Beach (Karon Beach, Thai. Hat Karon)

It should be borne in mind that the mentioned list does not accurately reflect the situation with the tides in Phuket, primarily because the attribution of the beach to "good" or "bad" in terms of tides is still subjective. In addition, the amount of garbage and algae left at low tide also depends on the wind and waves: during the monsoon from April to October, which blow just from the west, a huge amount of garbage is deposited on the west coast, where most beaches are located, and if it is not cleaned, then the beach can be polluted even at high tide.
